Patreon Year End Awards: Uyen’s Year In Dramas 2023!

Hey everyone!

Like what we did for the past couple of years, we’re having guest posts from the lovely folks on Patreon, to help us take stock of our drama years, yay! 🥳

We’ll be seeing about 2 guest posts per week, and this will unfold into January 2023, and that’s perfectly ok.

My annual year-in-review, which usually comes out in December, will also come out in January (or thereabouts 😅), after all the guest posts have been published.

If you missed our earlier posts, you can check them out as follows: Ele, Natalia, JJ, Sean, j3ffc.

Today, I’m pleased to announce that Uyen is sharing her drama year.

Uyen hasn’t been around as much this year, due to very important real-life things (like grad school – congrats Uyen! 🥳), so I’m really touched that she’s making time to share her drama year with us, nonetheless (thanks Uyen! 😘).

Of course, I’m always glad when Uyen does manage to come hang out with us, coz she’s a Junho-loving fangirl, just like me. 🥰😁

Uyen also writes about dramas on her own blog, which you can visit here.

I hope you guys enjoy!

~ KFG ❤️

Hi! It’s Uyen, here again for another year’s end post.

I’ve loved reading everyone’s posts, so glad to have a chance to chime in too.

I first started watching Hana Yori Dango years ago and then got back into dramas with Second 20s and Goblin.

Some of my favorites are My Mister, Just Between Lovers, Move To Heaven, Thirty But Seventeen, Because This Is My First Life, Be Melodramatic.

I have noticed with this year though that I’ve leaned more into angst a fair bit rather than slow and introspective – perhaps I need to blame my first cdrama last year, Love Like the Galaxy, for that haha!

I feel like I haven’t watched as many shows this year, and the shows I did watch were compressed into the first half of this year. I had to go back and scour Dramalist / Twitter / Patreon to figure out what I watched and when.

I don’t feel like there was one standout drama this year that completely grabbed my heart and consumed me.

In fact, I was a bit worried that I wouldn’t have anything to write about, but thankfully once I started listing out some titles for this post, I do have some thoughts after all.

My list really leans cdrama-heavy this year, and there’s some dramas that I dropped after one or a few episodes. Particularly in the past few months, I have to say that my attention span is incredibly short.

But without further ado, here we go (and yes I do add songs that I like below because OSTs are so important to me *high five, JJ*

Bright spots:

Hit The Spot

A short and scandalous series that impressed me with how far k-ent was willing to go.

We follow two women who host a podcast on sex and relationships, while they navigate their own dating lives. There was something refreshing about seeing frank depictions and challenges around sex and sexual health.

While the plot itself was nothing to write home about, I liked the idea they were going for.

The Story of Minglan

I knew it was by the same writer as Love Like The Galaxy (yes, I finished my third rewatch of it earlier this year), which was my fav drama last year, and so I had high hopes.

It’s quite different though – sprawling in terms of cast, more subdued in tone. But the politicking, the politicking! The scheming was top notch, especially in the way it talked about waging war in the household sphere.

The ladies were admirably scary in the way they exercised power within the roles they were confined to.

The slow buildup and characterization really pay off in the later episodes, but the trick is having the patience to wait for the rewards.

I really enjoyed watching Minglan’s growth throughout the drama.

The romance was ok to me, but it grew on me by the end (largely for my love of Minglan and therefore appreciation of people who valued her).

A Dream of Splendor

OH MY GOODNESS.

Sorry. I swooned a little bit thinking of the beginning half and the OTP here. It’s been months and I still feel it.

There haven’t been as many dramas lately that hook me in from the first ep like this one did. It petered out at the end for me [mild spoiler?] because of blasted noble idiocy and miscommunication [was that really a spoiler though bc this is the downfall of so many dramas by now], but I truly loved the three ladies’ bond and seeing them build their lives the way they wanted.

Go Ahead

The beginning episodes were everything to me, when our trio were younger.

I think it’s so beautiful how family relationships were explored here, and I go back to Li Jianjian’s words summing it up perfectly:

“I’ve always thought that just because people are related by blood, it doesn’t mean they’ll be one family, but people who love and cherish each other definitely can.”

I’m interested to see what the Korean adaptation will look like.

On the one hand, I could’ve skipped over some of the side character arcs, but on the other, I didn’t love the romance here so I’m curious to see how that’ll be addressed in the remake.

Flower of Evil

I LOVED THEM.

Yeah, this duo rewired my brain chemistry.

I’m so used to seeing couples get together, but it was very interesting to see a couple who have been together for years navigate layers in their relationship and learn to look past the secrets.

It helps that Lee Joon Gi and Moon Chae Won are such excellent actors.

I actually have not watched the last two episodes yet because my nerves were completely fried – I did read the spoilers but I’m pretty content with where I’m at because it was a really great show to me.

Also the daughter was the cutest.

^^This was one of the THE scenes to remember for me

Healer

This has been on my list for some time, and I’m happy to say that it quickly hooked me in.

Sometimes I wonder whether I like to be a contrarian and don’t like fan favorites, but this was one that I had high expectations for that I was pleased by.

It was very easy to get invested in the 1980s arc and try to piece things together.

We had some grief, guilt, wistfulness, love with some light moments mixed together in a combination that worked well. And the OTP had a great relationship!!

It ran just an ep or so long for me, but overall it was a great watch.

Hidden Love

Yes, I do think skipping the first eps until ep 7 or so helps since it’s a bit meh with her being so young in the beginning. However, it’s pure cotton candy fluff after, for me.

I love both Zhao Lusi and Chen Zheyuan, and it was so nice to see them in a show that had no unnecessary side characters or angst.

Not too much depth, but so appealing in its lightness. I still think fondly on the scene when they’re in the snow and make a wish for each other.

It felt like a fever dream but was so much fun:

I feel like I can’t completely recommend these because I had some serious qualms with the romance and/or plot (namely that I did not feel they were romances to aspire to), but they were SO much fun watching. Seriously.

I thoroughly enjoyed shaking my fists and yelling at the antagonists on screen (Bing Chang and Su Jin, I’m looking right at you).

There were some moments where I seriously questioned the characters’ actions. But at the end of the day, I got truly invested.

Til The End of the Moon

I cannot even describe to you what it was like watching this live and waiting on the ending eps. I didn’t even love the ending arc, but the rollercoaster of Tantai Jin and Susu’s relationship was very Wuthering Heights-coded.

A bit toxic? Sure. Also emotionally gripping? Yep.

I watched this when I was sick and truly, it consumed me and provided a very nice distraction.

Ten Miles of Peach Blossom

My first xianxia was one to remember.

I was confused at first, but thankfully I remember Ele walking me through some of the lore.

I fell headfirst into the mortal arc, which kept me invested through the agonizing heavenly arc.

I got so angry at times, but it was all in good fun (and isn’t that a good marker for a show sometimes? When it invokes all sorts of reactions from ya).

I definitely feel like this was a show that is fun to watch as a group, or at least have group reactions (thank you, phl1rxd, for always appreciating my rants hehe).

This song is seriously so epic, like it sounds *sweeping* *three lifetimes* *eternal love, you could say* to me:

I loved parts of it but wanted to love it more:

Call It Love

Melancholy, wistful, hopeful, and quotable – this show is exactly my type in certain ways.

The cinematography in certain scenes was exquisite –  I remember a scene where the way they were framed through doorways mirrored their character relationships.

I also really liked the OST and instrumental music.

The only thing is that towards the end I felt like the plot dragged a bit for me, and I remember rushing to finish the end without completely loving it.

But shoutout to the siblings (the sisters’ relationship was the best) and Sung Joon’s character for being highlights for me.

Twinkling Watermelon

I am a sucker for youth dramas, and the first two episodes started off very strong for me.

I cried at our lead’s relationship with his family and father (So beautiful. So relatable in the parent-child angst and struggle to understand each other).

By now, I thoroughly enjoy seeing Choi Hyun Wook on my screen, and he excels at these sort of charming characters.

Where this show fell off for me was its greater focus on the romance (specifically the younger pair though, I didn’t mind at all the parents’ arc) than on the family relationships.

I wanted to see more of the family/friendship aspect towards the end, and I don’t feel that it tied together as well for me as I’d like.

That said, it did make me smile, and I loved the music.

Road Home

A strange one, this one.

After watching it, I felt a bit dissatisfied.

Second chance stories are my kryptonite, but I felt that this one never wrung out my emotions quite the way I wanted to. Also, yes, it does run slow.

The thing is though, once I finished watching it, I felt compelled to rewatch it a second time. With the handy use of the fast forward button and some lens adjustments, I really enjoyed my second watch.

This could also be colored by my bias for both Jing Boran and Tan Songyun.

Once we got past some of the beginning angst, I loved watching them together. I still replay some scenes sometimes because I really liked their younger scenes together.

A League of Nobleman

Jing Boran bias coming through here. This is actually the first drama I saw him in, and something about his elegant Lan Jue stood out.

In terms of the actual story (an investigative duo solving mysteries, with a supernatural bent) – I felt like the idea was interesting, but the execution fell flat for me at times.

But hey in the end, I did have a soft spot for those boys, and my takeaway is that OTP was Lan Jue and Mowen.

A Familiar Stranger (rewatch)

Sean mentioned this in his EOY post, and I do enjoy this enough to rewatch parts of it.

I’m such a sucker for the aloof husband falling for his wife trope, and watching the leads fall for each other was great.

The only thing is that I felt the explanation behind the supernatural aspect wasn’t as well laid out, and the ending felt more anticlimactic for me.

However, I also think this is due to the limitations of it being a short series – both the blessing is that it zipped through, but the curse is that it didn’t have the room for everything to be fleshed out. But overall, a good watch for me.

Dropped:

Crash Course in Romance: My most anticipated 2023 drama at the end of last year, but alas, while Jung Kyung Ho and Jeon Do Yeon are my loves, the story just did not grab me past the first few eps.

The Interest of Love: It started off fascinating for me on how it explored class and character dynamics.

There have definitely been times when more unlikeable characters are still interesting to me, however, this was not the case. I never got invested enough in our leads to keep going (and I actually shipped our leads with the respective second leads).

Nothing But You: I know, I know, Wu Lei – but no. Not necessarily anything bad, but I just didn’t feel compelled to continue.

Hold My Hand At Twilight: JJ, it’s so funny because I brought this one up, but I didn’t get past ep 3.

I completely think it’s a personal thing where seeing a few eps of two friends dancing around each other with their chemistry but also not getting together right away seemed a little too agonizing at the time to continue. Someday I will come back!!

Love Between Fairy and Devil: I’ve tried a few times and I keep getting stalled, so unfortunately it’s an indefinite pause for me, even though I know it was one of the favs of 2022.

Shining For One Thing: I know! I think it’s like Someday or One Day for me, where in theory I think I’d like it, but something didn’t quite work.

Kokdu: Quickly dropped after the first ep. My fav cast members from Mr. Queen could not save it for me.

Taxi Driver 2: I made it through a few eps and enjoyed seeing the crew again, but the overarching plot/antagonist was less interesting to me than the episodic stories that made me invested in the first half of the first season.

King The Land: I know, I know, JUNHO MY LOVE – but I couldn’t take the helicopter landing seriously (I did make an effort and watched through ep 2 but then there were other things to watch, so goodbye, Junho)

Movies:

I had to throw in these two movies because I feel like I was more excited and emotionally wrung out from these movies than any dramas I watched this year.

Soulmate (both Chinese and Korean versions)

I loved this and have a soft spot for the Chinese version, largely because I watched it first and Zhou Dongyu and Ma Sichun were just excellent together.

I enjoyed the Korean version too, and felt that while the general storyline stayed the same, there were some nuances in the story and character relationships that made it interesting to compare the two.

Ultimately, I felt that the Chinese version felt grittier, more vulnerable, more open to exposing the sharp edges in a friendship.

Us & Them

This movie knocked me over when I least expected it (as the good ones usually do).

I watched it for Jing Boran and was amazed by Zhou Dongyu. I watched this movie and rewatched it the weekend after, that’s how much I loved it.

The thing is, it tells a story that we’ve seen before – boy meets girl, boy falls in love, they reconnect years later.

We’ve seen multiple versions of this even in the past year. But it’s the acting and the writing that pulls it together for me.

Zhou Dongyu’s character has a lovely relationship with Jing Boran’s father, and there’s some social commentary here on the restlessness of youth, the allure of cities, and the chase of dreams that felt particularly enticing to watch.

I saw that there’s a Korean adaptation in the works, which makes me both excited and nervous because I loved the original so much.

Currently watching:

The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract: I love Lee Se Young. I loved the first two eps with the Joseon background and the fun of seeing LSY adjust to modern life. Unfortunately the last few eps dragged a bit more for me, but I’m still in it for her.

A Journey to Love: I am…two eps in. So perhaps not the best judge yet, but I do have to say I enjoy what I see, and our female lead is particularly badass.

Quick awards:

Most Likely To Give You Cavities: Hidden Love (I also consider this the “Best Fantasy Come To Life” because who wouldn’t want your years long crush to notice you and like you back, absolutely the stuff of dreams)

Fav Female Character: Moon Chae Won’s Cha Ji Won from Flower of Evil (absolutely badass yet still having a huge heart, scared me from ep 1 with her boldness)

Fav Male Character: Luo Yunxi’s Tantai Jin from Til The End of the Moon (a walking red flag never looked so good in historical costume)

Fav OTP: Chen Xiao’s Gu Qianfan and Liu Yifei’s Zhao Pan’er from A Dream of Splendor had me absolutely squealing with their flirting and will-they-won’t-they banter, it was very bad

Fav Work of Art of The Year (in lieu of fav drama): Us & Them, for reasons mentioned above

In conclusion

Here’s to another year of drama watching!

I very much appreciate the community here. Even though I feel like I haven’t had a chance to watch as many dramas and engage as much this year, it’s always fun to pop in and see what’s going on.

Happy holidays, everyone!

I’m amazed you have time for any drama watching in grad school! I can see why you are way quicker to drop things than I am. I’ll definitely have to check out your movies. They sound like ones I’d like. Great Post!

i really enjoyed reading this Uyen. i thought you didn’t watch much – and yet you still talked about so many shows! i’m impressed. grad school is HARD, congrats for surviving a year of it!

i always love your recommendations and replies coz we generally have similar tastes!

you are hilarious “a walking red flag never looked this good” “most likely to give you cavities” (i agree for this one!)

about your shows –

  • sadly likewise for Crash Course in Romance. i too love JKH and JDY but this one was just ok. though i have some bright spots that i mentioned in my EOY review! and actually same for King the Land, i was bored and eventually dropped it.
  • i have a dream of splendour, shining for one thing, go ahead, flower of evil, twinkling watermelon, call it love on my to watch list (which is never ending)
  • a familiar stranger sounds good and it’s going onto the list!
  • i actually independent of recent influence, started Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms! i’m a bit stalled at the first few episodes coz i’m not used to xianxia too. but everyone says it’s so epic love that i’m sure to love it.. i need to get back to it

happy 2024 and may life give us good dramas + time to watch it !

Thank you, MC!! We really do like similar shows. Hopping over to read your post next so excited to see your thoughts. Am curious what you’ll think of the shows on your list that you’ll get to next!! (I completely understand about it being neverending).

Ah yes, I also felt confused at the beginning eps for Peach Blossom but I got fully hooked in by the double digit eps with the mortal arc. I really feel it’s a nice show to vent about HAHA so hope if you go through it, you drop thoughts in the exchanges.

Happy New Year!

Ooh, Uyen!!! I love what you love – I really think we have excellent taste in dramas 😅 I’m hyper introvert and would rather hide in a cupboard than actually socialise but, shocker, I really want to chat with you (and so many on here – hello @JJ, @Natalia, , , @seanfletcher, @ABV – oh, and , naturally!) because I feel like we’d have brilliant conversations about these shows in person 😀 This is the power of kdrama and cdrama!

So anyway, reading your year had me smiling ear to ear! Ah, so many shows to love and appreciate. I am impressed you’ve rewatched Love Like the Galaxy three times!! I want a rewatch badly, but keep thinking it would be ace as a group watch (hint, , not-subtle-at-all hint 😆)

Hmm, yes, Till the End of the Moon was definitely darkly Wuthering Heights, I totally agree!! Tantai Jin is way more Heathcliff than Mr Darcy, which is probably why I loved him so much 😍 I think cdramas are generally more gothic – and I do love a dose of melodrama!

On that note, I’m surprised you’ve struggled to get into Love Between Fairy and Devil because our Wang Hedi is the epitome of scowl – but it also took some persistence for me to get into it too because of the fairy… Yikes. It still annoys me that cdrama has a tendency to make its female leads a bit sickly sweet. Well, she’s much better when they body swap…

I really enjoyed the OTP in The Story of Minglan too – didn’t you love the grandmother? So much quieter as a show than Love Like the Galaxy but I could see similarities in the complexity of the cast and their individual agendas – always so clever and flawed, including the leads.

I’d totally forgotten I watched Flower of Evil! Oh, I did like it too. I felt like the relationship was entirely why I enjoyed the show. The premise is mad, but I always believed in how they reacted. It felt extremely genuine – and of course, I am smitten with Lee Joongi 🫠

Of the ones I haven’t seen, I’m naturally drawn to Dream of Splendour – best swoony OTP you say?! I’m in!! I’ll let you know how I get on 😀

Oh-my-gosh – YIPPPEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! I love you!!! 🥰

I think you absolutely can use your excellent (and epic) review for each set of episodes. I personally don’t feel the need for a separate spoiler section either – but maybe others need that? I literally forget everything after a year so there won’t be spoilers from me, just far too much in the way of squeeeing 😆 which I apologise for in advance 😅

Fit it entirely around your schedule – I’m patient!😀

On behalf of all Love Like the Galaxy devotees and the curious, THANK YOU!! 😍 I can’t wait!

@Ele, , I actually don’t mind spoilers all that much. Like @Ele, I happily forget quite a lot of stuff after watching it anyway (hence the need to rewatch!)

Perhaps if we have folks who come along and do not want to be spoiled, then we could do our spazzing in a spoiler zone, or we could put in spoiler warnings in caps before our comments, just in case.

How do these group watches work exactly? Should you have watched the show before?

Thank you.

Thanks for explaining how group watches work. It sounds very good and comfortable with no pressure. I was wondering how it would work due to the time zone differences but this is very doable.

Probably works better for rewatches but I think even for a first watch, this could be a lot of fun. 😊

Thanks ABV for asking the question and thanks Kfangurl for responding. I was also wondering how the group watches work. I’m interested in watching LLTG, which I never did watch before. I was just thinking that I’d prefer to watch it while getting insights of other watchers and then I saw your conversation.

I’ll look out for your announcement for a group watch and see if I can join in.

My dear kfangurl, how sweet of you and thanks for such an effusive welcome to your group watch!!

I, too can accommodate what the group might prefer. I will be busier until mid-March 2024, and then will be more free to watch avidly after that, but don’t let that stop you from starting the group watch in February. Yes, it would be better to have all your EOY Reviews out first before we embark on another ‘project’.

I find your schedule flexible and not stressful to follow, since I can come in on time or later. Sometimes I stress myself, because after doing 1 watch, I rewatch on my own to squeeze more juice out of the episode (heheheh!).

I’m happy to go along with any time the majority would like. I’d also like to see how I manage it with the shows I’m currently watching (but not as avidly as before) and other work that I will be doing.

Your ‘envy’ over my first watch makes me feel that it’s a good decision to do this watch with others who like the show. Notwithstanding, I’ll probably still have my own opinions, but I like reading what others say.

I’ll read ya again!!

Very nice! Both of you concluded the entire discussion pretty much. Thank you so much for that. This is going to be my first watch of Love Like the Galaxy too. I almost started it a couple of months ago but decided to put it off. So this will be a fresh experience for me. Now that I have seen both Wu Lei (Nothing But You) and Zhao Lu Si (Hidden Love), I am quite excited.

Definitely back up the reasoning to wait till all the EOY posts are done.

Starting the group watch in February or March sounds ideal too because for me, those are usually the months when I have the most free time. But yeah, we have to work out if everyone else is on board and then something can be set up. Looking forward to your announcement.

Also noted your point about the Nirvana in Fire notes. Thank you.

I have for quite a while too. I usually need a lot of motivation to pick up any historical drama. But given that Ele brought up the topic of a possible group watch, I could not help but get curious. Very glad that everything seems to be falling into place. 😊

Glad that all our schedules align so far. Very excited!

@ABV, It was about being excited.

However, it was not that many years ago that I also had a great disinclination to get into historical/period dramas. It took a long while for me to put a toe in here and there, and now I’m happy to watch both contemporary and period dramas. I have yet to try the republican era dramas.

The main thing for me is that the plot is good and that viewers are not expected to accept ‘crap’ just because of pretty faces or CGI etc. 😅😁

@GrowingBeautifully

Oh! That makes sense too.

Nice to know that I am not the only one. I guess everyone has some genre or type of series that they have a disinclination towards. I am not averse to watching them though. I know that I will like them as long as they story and characters are great which they most often are. I am slowly opening up in this regard already. I did love My Dearest which was the latest Historical Drama that I watched.

I also hope that I can be comfortable with them like you soon. I haven’t watched any republican era shows either I think.

@ABV, @GrowingBeautifully, FWIW, I haven’t missed a group watch (yet) and all but one were first watches for me. I think the organization jibes beautifully with an initial encounter with a show, and folks on the site have been very considerate re spoilers.

As to whether a Spoiler Zone is warranted, my observation has been that it hasn’t been used that much in the past (maybe for NIF and Chuno, which was another outstanding group watch) and I think that the extra work for KFG is probably not warranted if everyone agrees to (1) use spoiler boxes

Spoiler Box
which I LOVE

and (2) only use email notifications alerts if you don’t mind being spoiled. My 0.02 USD.

Thank you, Ele!! Yes I totally feel the same way where it’s so much fun to chat about dramas with you all. I do think the cdramas I’ve seen feel more gothic, and I definitely love that too.

Yeah I did want to get into LBFAD and I do love a scowly lead, but for some reason I just didn’t feel attached to the characters enough.

The grandmother in Minglan was AMAZINGLY smart and kind!! Yes, I definitely see some similarities even though it’s quite different than LLTG. I actually felt in some ways the payoff was greater because the characterizations were done so well, seeing Minglan’s growth.

Yes, I watched Flower of Evil after Til The End of the Moon and really felt there was something in me searching for complex, slightly dysfunctional relationships, but our FOE OTP was much more communicative and ultimately happier. I too am smitten with Lee Joongi!! The man needs more romances to act in.

p.s. Did I hear a LLTG group watch?? I’m all in!

Uyen! So glad that you could write an EOY post after all! It is always a pleasure reading you.

We share love for quite a few dramas; from Love like the Galaxy to Flower of Evil, going through the amazing Tantai Jin (I will not say Till the end of the moon, because the show did fell apart for me towards the end – though I also share your palpable hate for YE BINGCHAAANG!).

Nevertheless, I do consider temporarily suspending you from our Wu Lei fan club, not to mention our Glorious Eyebrows Appreciation club!

Anyway, thank you again, congratulations for grad school and may 2024 be an even better year for you!

Thank you, Natalia!! I did notice that we do love similar dramas, with complex and interesting characters. Tantai Jin is one of the most fascinating characters to me, and Luo Yunxi truly did him justice. Yes, I don’t love hating on female characters but…Ye Bingchang truly brought out the fury.

Nooo, say it isn’t so, haha! Doesn’t my four watches of LLTG even it out with my appreciation of Lei Lei as our stoically smitten general?? 😛 It’s okay, with Amidst a Snowstorm of Love coming out at some point, I’m confident I’ll earn back the brownie points to make it back into the Wu Lei fan club. Oh yes the GLORIOUS EYEBROWS how could I Forget

Thank you very much!! Happy New Year!

Uyen, thanks for another great post. I had to grin at your “Cavities” award as I often feel the same way 😂. I’m impressed with the range of what you tried out and you do an outstanding job of summarizing what you liked and what you didn’t. And I am very jealous of your ability to drop dramas…I was able to stick through “Crash Course” but just because the FL had such a good story (you are also lucky b/c you missed a particularly awkward secondary romance near the end of that one).

Question from the C-drama curious: overall, I liked Zhao Lusi in LLTG (four watches – impressive!) and am sort of curious about “Hidden Love” as a result. But I’ve never reverse-dropped a show like you did. Overall, do you think it would be appealing to someone more steeped in K-dramas?

Also, interested in your comments on the two “Soulmate”. I watched the Korean one and thought it was pretty darn gritty.

Distracting Observation
I think that it’s a bit of a shock when you see a promo photo for a movie that is all happy/glam looking and then get into an actual watch that is a million times darker.

Maybe because I was tired/traveling (my usual excuse), I had a little trouble tracking the way the main relationship changed over the course of the story. Because of your comments, I’m tempted to try the Chinese variant to see if I follow things better. Having seen both, did you whichever one you watched second engaging?

Thanks for the post and comments throughout the year – and best new year’s wishes to you. And, speaking as a fellow academic, here’s to keeping your drama life and grad school in balance in 2024!

Thank you very much, j3ffc! Ah good to know I made a wise choice to skip that side arc in CCIR.

I think Hidden Love is one of the easier cdramas to try (granted I haven’t really watched too many modern cdrama romances) but it refreshingly doesn’t really spend time on side character arcs and was quite sweet and mindless to watch, if you have the patience to get through the beginning eps. I actually felt from browsing Twitter that a number of folks used to watching kdrama romances got hooked onto Hidden Love as their first cdrama. So it might well be a good one for you to try since you watched LLTG already (and LLTG is so different too as a historical one).

response about Soulmate
Ah yes, I can see that about the happy pictures and feeling fooled. I’ve been meaning to watch both versions more carefully back to back and since it’s been a few months perhaps more observations will come out. But looking through some of my notes on scenes, I felt like the kmovie focused on the positive portrayal of the friendship and them drifting apart because of the boy/distance, while the cmovie subtly showed differences in their class/personalities from the beginning so I better understood the tension points in their relationship. I do love Kim Da Mi, but Zhou Dongyu’s version of her character seemed more lively and interesting to me.

I still found the watch of the Korean version pretty engaging, and actually watching both was nice to pick up on some of the subtle differences in characters or plot. I do think my heart stayed with the Chinese version though, so I’m quite curious if you choose to watch the Chinese version what you end up thinking! Perhaps since you know the rough outline of things, that might help with following the story too.

Happy New Year, and thank you, I hope to be able to balance my studies but make time for the dramas that bring me joy too!

Will let you know if I can squeeze C-Soulmate or HL onto my plate!

Wondering if you’ve seen “Return to Seoul”? Not Korean (it’s French) but similar in some feels to Soulmate, although focused on a single character.

Uyen – loved this post! Yes, I admit to having a soft spot for your Drama Exchange recaps.

Thanks for your mention of Hit the Spot as I never would have experienced this one otherwise. A bold, bold drama that proves that KDrama can make you care about their characters no matter what else is going on the background.

Yes for Tantai Jin and like you , I dismissed the bad parts just for him. Honestly Uyen, that scene in the courtyard when he is on his knees made me cry hard. All that snow!

Minglan – still on my top 3 CDramas. I just loved everything about it, from her Feckless Father to her strong GMom.

It looks like you got some classics under your belt as well this year. Healer and Peach Blossoms – good job you Uyen!

I am hoping for lots of good drama to come out this year! Happy New Year!

Thank you, phl1rxd!! Yes, I do agree that Hit The Spot was shorter, but still got me to care about the characters.

Wasn’t Tantai Jin the best?? Luo Yunxi really knew him well, and he’s easily one of the most fascinating characters to me. Yes that snow scene hooks you in, I see the pic you posted too, and the feels are back!!

Agree about Minglan — Feckless Father is such a good term and I believe he’s the same way in The Bond too, I shake my head at him every time on screen, which is great acting.

I am glad I did get to the classics!! Both were very fun to watch. Happy New Year!

Uyen – I am sitting here laughing and thinking about Feckless Father. Yes, he is the same kind of character as in the Bond. Thinking about this Uyen, I have to say that this is not an easy role to play. He is in NIF2 and plays the Emperor but I cannot remember this role. I will check him out on a rewatch. I am fond of him!

@uyen – Total Hi 5 Back!!!

Just the mention of Goblin makes me smile 🙂

Wasnt LLTG a fun ride? And what an OST it was!!!!

Oh that makes me sad to hear no drama grabbed your heart this year 🙁 Maybe next year???

Isn’t that fun so many of us have Cdrama lists this year! I kinda hope thats a trend that we continue to get great Cdramas and of course Kdramas as well 🙂

I love how you describe Hit The Spot! Perfect! I’ll always thank you for suggesting this one over on Patreon!!!

I have to get to Story of Minglan. I dont know whats holding me back! While I have a hard time with all the politicking in Sageuks, I LOVE them in Cdramas for some reason. Argh…One day I’ll get to Minglan!

Ohhhhh we feel the same about Go Ahead!!!!Another one I have you to thank for getting me to watch that one 🙂

Ah the memories of Dream of Splendor!
Oh the noble idiocy and that stupid misplaced item. Made me FF for numerous episodes until it was found, then I went back to watch what I FF. LOL!!!

FoE – SWOON Lee Joon Gi. What an actor. What a performance. LOVED the relationship between he and his daughter. What a great child actor! So special. Now this is an OST I love!!!

Ohhhh I remember being nervous if Healer would work for you or not and it DID!! YAY.

Ok, you are making me want to rewatch so many of these Shows!!!

Hidden Love – I just loved this one and Zhao Lusi just does no wrong in my eyes right now 🙂 Her airport scene – ugh. Heart breaking. And then I laughed until I cried when she got too tipsy and he had to carry her home. Some of the best drunk lines ever written. Loved that scene.

Too funny we watched TTEOTM the same way and totally absorbed. I know how it ends so I am putting it off. Ill get there one day 🙂

Ten Miles of Peach Blossom- One day…

Ok, I am going to stop commenting on each Show you wrote. Sorry! Got carried away as if we were over in the Deep Dive Zone chit chatting away 🙂

Oh one more thing though. I have been mulling over months a rewatch of Road Home and you solidified its a must for me. I have a total bias for Tan Songyun. Another one who does no wrong in my eyes. Gosh, how I loved her in Sword and Brocade! This was my first exposure to Jing Boran and man did he impress me. I’ll let you know how my second watch goes!

Oh I passed up on a League of Nobleman. Maybe I need to go back?

Uh go figure I missed A Familiar Stranger from Sean’s post and just in general.

GASP! You dropped Nothing But You! But, but, but…omo. Oh no. Say it isnt so. Can I convince you to maybe revisit at some point???

OH NO!!! Thats HYSTERICAL you didnt finish Hold My Hand at Twilight 🤣🤣🤣🤣 and I have been suggesting it to everyone saying you recommend this one 🤣🤣🤣🤣 One day 🤭

As for Love Between Fairy and Devil, took me 6 episodes to get into and only went back to it because phl1rxd told me to hang in there. Glad, I did. It was a fun different ride.

Oh uyen…not Junho…sniffle.

So which to watch first of Soulmate? Chinese version or Korean version!?!!!

Oh Jing Boran is in Us & Them. Im off!!!

We feel the same about Park’s Marriage Contract. Im all in for LSY. I just had to pause and wait for the ending until I begin again 🙂 But man weren’t those opening episode just amazing?!!!

Keep going with A Journey to Love 🙂 Im at episode 35!

I love your quick awards, so funny and so true!!!

Love this – “a walking red flag never looked so good in historical costume” 🤭

May your 2024 of Drama watching bring you that one that envelopes your heart and then some 🥰

p.s. Love your post! I am so glad you had time to put one together 🥰

JJ, I can think of many reasons why politicking is boring in sageuks but thrilling in C period dramas:

1. In sageuks, the villain is always the damn left state chancellor! In Cdramas, it can be anyone, the Empress dowager, the Head Eunuch, the evil Marquis, anyone!

2. The womanfolk in K palaces are always so proper, even the evil ones. They never attain the nastiness (and reversely, the badasserie) of Chinese harems.

3. In sageuks, everyone dresses the same. Guys really wear the same clothes, whereas for women it is almost the same. In Cdramas, there is so much variety! Just think those gorgeous fur coats! Also, men often go for the flowy hair or the ponytail style, and they look so much better! Not to mention the make-up, noone goes shy on the make-up, men or women, whereas Koreans seem to go for a more realistic vibe.

Interesting points, @Natalia! I agree. The costumes in cdramas are always stellar – I get obsessed with male and female styles, fabrics, hair, hair ornaments!! So much pretty 😍 Also, the court hats in cdrama always remind me of floppy bunny ears – ADORABLE!!! Honestly, check out this pic of Zhang Linghe rocking the ears 😍

@Natalia – Ohhhhh you are so right!!! I love this list and you totally nailed it!

1. ALWAYS, I mean always the LSC! Wait once it wasnt and I think it was the Right State Chancellor. Im trying to think. In Cdramas yes!!! You never know where it’s coming from except everyone always wants to bring down the emperor and the crown prince!

2. LOL! Yes! You are right the Cdrama nastiness is pretty intense. And I can sit through it 😂😂😂 I didnt FF once in Sword and Brocade. I hung in there and that was some nasty nastiness!

3. Ohhhh yes! The costumes are much different in Kdramas vs Cdramas period pieces. and in Sageuks they are pretty rigid in their attire of all stiff heavy fabrics and nothing seems to be flowing as in Cdramas. When you said coats, I immediately thought of Nirvana in Fire 🙂

Ohhhh I never thought about the make up, but you are soooo right which is so odd. Because of Kpop makeup and the makeup in modern Kdramas is always impeccable. I do love those flowy wigs in Cdrama Fantasy pieces. Love the ones in A Journey to Love right now!!!

All excellent points, Natalia. Thank you 🙂

Ahh thank you. JJ!! I always love all your comments and totally agree on them. Sang Zhi in Hidden Love was the cutest in that drunk scene. I do love that TTEOTM was so absorbing and just wish I’d loved it more overall, but I do think it really inspired talented people to make great edits and the OST was great for me: https://twitter.com/Cpop_Melon/status/1742196224634007621

I would be very curious to hear your thoughts on Minglan and TMOPB if you ever get to them!!

I totally loved Tan Songyun after Sword & Brocade too, so I fully support a Road Home rewatch, aided by the fast forward button.

Hmm I liked A League of Nobleman for Jing Boran but would see how the first ep or so goes. Otherwise, while they’re completely diff stories if I had to pick something on my list to recommend, I’d rec A Familiar Stranger bc it’s short and sweet (also I’m just more biased towards romance focused shows haha).

I was just telling ABV I might go back to NBY…at some point…

So glad you watched Go Ahead, I just knew you would like it and the heartwarming moments!

I know, I think there is a good chance I’ll get back to Hold My Hand at Twilight, just not as much time right now but I think it’s an easy one to pick back up and watch leisurely.

I preferred the Chinese version so I’d suggest that one first, if only because I feel the first watch is the one that lingers more because you have no idea what the characters and story are like so it’s nice to experience that for the first time!

Let me know if you do watch Us & Them!! Yes, Park’s Marriage Contract had wonderful 1st 2 eps that hooked me in. I am also making my way through A Journey to Love, paused a bit but getting back into it!

(Natalia, I think you’re so right about the politicking, the nastiness making things much more interesting, and the amazing styling of cdramas. Thanks for the bunny ears pic, Ele, hehe)

Excellent read Uyen. Thank you.

Quite a few titles to have a look at here. Soulmate, Us and Them, Story of Minglan and A Dream of Splendor.

Unfortunate that you could not continue with Nothing But You.

Glad that you liked Healer, Hidden Love, Flower of Evil and Hit the Spot.

I also happen to have A Love Between a Fairy and Devil on an indefinite hold of sorts. Just did not hook me fully even after 10+ episodes.

All the best with your studies.

@ABV – Fairy & Devil – Took me 6 episodes to get hooked! Then, I was able to dive in and stay and watch along with everyone else. The story behind how it came to being is quite impressive. Went through, literally, hundreds of rewrites. And started off with him being an Alien and then the story transformed into what it is now.

Nice. Would be great if you could give Nothing But You another go if you feel upto it.

Unfortunately. Not sure why but I wasn’t able to get behind the characters in Lover Between a Fairy and Devil which is a huge issue for me.

It would have been nice to see that alien iteration to be honest.

Thank you very much! Loved being part of all the interactions 😊 All the best for the year ahead!

@ABV – Here is the special IQIYI did with the production team and cast for Fairy & Devil. I have no idea where I got the erroneous information about hundreds of rewrites 🫣🤣

The script went through 19 revisions over 3 years. Maybe the novel was hundreds of pages 🤣🤣🤣

You can listen for yourself when they start discussing at the 5min mark.

19 revisions is still a fair amount (or maybe not so much for a story of this kind). The novel would be hundreds of pages at least.

@JJ Yes. Thank you. I watched it after work. Not sure I would have liked a steam punk setting but aliens did sound interesting. 😅😅Just added a few more….

What a delightful read, Uyen. I enjoyed your quick awards section too. It’s a great idea.

I had to smile at your comments re Love Between Fairy and Devil. I tried a number of times after I had given up on it, but it just didn’t convince me to go back in. I also felt the same as you re Crash Course in Romance. Lol re King the Land. I did like the helicopter scene (it’s a boy thing), but show was such a disappointment overall and even more so as time goes by.

I’m really glad you discovered Minglan because the character itself was delightful. I remember seeing interviews with her at the time and she was so worried about doing the character justice. As we know, she needn’t have worried.

I am trawling my way back through Road Home. It is a show that needs digesting, even though I think some viewers would find it way too slow.

I will take a look at Us & Them. I think I might have thought about watching this previously.

I’m currently watching two CDramas: The Lonely Warrior and I Know I Love You. The former is a wow and the latter is a must watch in my view – mature love stuff going on in this age group instead of the cutie pie fluffy stuff, although there are lots of cats 😁

Here’s to you finding a favourite drama in 2024, studies etc permitting 😊🥳🎉

Thank you very much, Sean! I had to laugh at your comment about the helicopter scene and it being a boy thing. Yes, Minglan is one of my favorite characters of all time!! I do agree that Road Home is a nice show that can be savored and is easy to go back to when the mood is right. I Know I Love You sounds like the type of show I’d like, especially when you say it’s a mature love, so putting it on my list!

What I enjoy about I Know I Love You is that some of the more challenging aspects portrayed regarding certain relationships ring true, not that this should be a reason in itself for validating a show.

Also, the female leads are very good. There is depth to the show’s characters too and each character is not cut and dried.

I do really like that, when shows lean more realistic at times in their relationship plots, and extra good to hear about characters having depth. Thanks for the rec, Sean!!
