Patreon Year End Awards: Ele’s Year In Dramas 2023!

My friends!

It’s that time of the year again, when we look back on our drama years, and decide which dramas were worthy of our love, and which dramas we ought to think about putting in that application to get our drama hours back, heh. 😁

It’s become a bit of a tradition by now, with quite a few folks on Patreon actively thinking about these year-end posts, even before I announced that we were doing this again. How cool is that? 🤩

Like last year, we’ll be taking things in a more relaxed direction this year, so that we don’t all get stressed out from this (and so that I can attempt to stay on top of my Patreon schedule, at the same time 😅).

Again, like last year, we’ll be seeing about 2 guest posts per week, and this will unfold into January 2024, and that’s perfectly ok.

AND, my annual year-in-review, which used to come out in December, will again, like last year, come out in January (or thereabouts 😅), after all the guest posts have been published.

Ele is kicking us off this year (thank you, Ele! ❤️).

Not only did Ele make time to write this post despite being a busy artist who also cares for her grandson (Ele’s a very young grandmom!), she volunteered for the first slot available on the schedule I released – talk about being feisty and dauntless! 😉

If you’d like to read more of Ele’s writing, you can check out her other brilliant post, where she talks about fangirling, Jane Austen style, here!

You might also like to visit Ele’s website, where she talks about art and writing.

I hope you guys enjoy!

Cdrama: You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you

If we haven’t “met” before, hello! I’m Ele, an artist and writer from Bath, England, and a self-confessed romance addict.

In case you missed the blog kfangurl generously shared on here last year, I had a thoroughly lovely time reimagining my kdrama favourites as characters from Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice; you can check it out here! 💏

For this blog, I can’t resist indulging in Austen again, only this time inspired by my love affair with dramas from China – AKA cdrama.

Like my original love for kdrama, cdrama has all the trappings of the very best Jane Austen has to offer: lush costumes, stunning scenery, complex characters in worlds you want to linger in, and – most importantly for me (and you, if you’re a romance addict too) – gorgeous, sincere, and meaningful One True Pairings (OTPs) 🥰 Squeeeeeee!

Although I will include some older Chinese dramas I’ve watched, I’ll only give the awards to dramas released this year (the ones I’ve seen, obviously).

So, are you curious to know who the Mr Darcy of cdramaland might be? Who’s the clever Elizabeth Bennett? Which drama has the most swoony romantic moments? Oh, and let’s not forget the best kiss 😘

If you’d like a music recommendation while you read, just to add to the feels, how about “Borrowing Dreams” from Story of Kunning Palace by original soundtrack god, Zhou Shen:

Who’s with me? Let’s do this!

THE MR DARCY AWARD FOR BEST MALE LEAD

Ah, male leads in Chinese dramas are chockful of Darcy-esque scowling, misunderstood, and often maligned antiheroes whose loyalty (to the emperor, or their moral crusade to right a wrong, or to their league of equally loyal comrades) is unwavering and just and sometimes a little bit unhinged.

From the sharp downward angle of Wang Hedi’s eyebrows as Dongfang Qingcang in Love Between Fairy and Devil, to Wu Lei’s darkly glittering General Ling in Love Like the Galaxy, to Zhang Linghe’s manipulative and calculating Xie Ju’an in Story of Kunning Palace, cdrama excels at delivering compelling lead characters who feel fully-rounded – heroes but not without flaws.

They can be both brooding and kind, loving and prone to acts of rage.

Yes, on occasions this brewing inner torment can make our cdrama male leads a tad overbearing 😳 but just as Elizabeth Bennet comes to see Mr Darcy is more than just his pride and disdain for others, we too are allowed to understand them – and will them to do better.

Perhaps there’s no darker male lead this year than Luo Yunxi in Till the End of the Moon as the unflinching, unapologetic, beautifully misunderstood demon lord Tantai Jin.

The awesome CGI halo of fire as Demon God, the seething weak mortal Tantai Jin, the regally aloof God of War, Mingye, the gentler disciple Cang Jiumin, every incarnation is vivid and captivating.

Let’s face it, no one can be that tortured, and cough up that amount of blood, and not be redeemed by love – and this award 😍

Luo Yunxi as Tantai Jin, Till the End of the Moon

THE ELIZABETH BENNETT AWARD FOR BEST FEMALE LEAD

Jane Austen’s Elizabeth Bennett is shrewd, independent, and full of wit – and our heroines of cdramaland generally embody this spirit to dazzling effect.

Whether it’s Zhao Yiling’s resourceful Sheng Minglan in The Story of Minglan, or Peng Xiao Ran as the resilient Xiao Feng in Goodbye My Princess, or Liu Shishi as deadly-with-a-bamboo-leaf Ren Ruyi in My Journey to Love, these astute lead characters are strong, capable women despite many of the stifling period societies they are trapped within.

While the ofttimes reckless spirit of Zhao Lusi’s Sang Zhi in Hidden Love, as well as her quick-witted Niao Niao in Love Like the Galaxy are excellent, it’s Jing Tian’s intelligent and determined Mu Zhuohua in The Legend of Zhuohua who really epitomises Austen’s Elizabeth Bennett and steals the award 😊

Jing Tian as Mu Zhouhua, The Legend of Zhouhua

THE MERYTON AWARD FOR BEST ENSEMBLE CAST

While the leads in any cdrama can be the gift that keeps on giving, a truly great drama requires an imaginative cast of characters we can despise and root for.

In Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, the village of Meryton, with the colourful militia, the ambitious neighbours, the friends, the families, and the gossips, all help populate the world to make our leads shine.

Never is this truer than in cdrama, whose very nature of drawing a story out over thirty, fifty, eighty-plus episodes, provides scope for a wealth of characters who can equally infuriate and delight.

Even the humblest eunuch, the distant cousin, the passing general, can steal a moment and convey a story.

Adapted from two novels by the same author, Love Like the Galaxy and The Story of Minglan are both tours de force in their respective array of characters – so many to love and detest, a true, very Austen reflection of the pressures of societal expectations, indifference, and hypocrisy.

In 2023, the show that particularly stood out to me for its collection of individual idiosyncratic characters is My Journey to You.

From the intrigue of female spies to their richly dark mentors, to the suspicious Gong family and their guards, to the weird isolation of the Back Hill, the ensemble cast are surreal and highly original, but even while the plot of the show doesn’t wholly work out, I never tired of it, and that’s thanks to them.

Omid as Han Yasi, My Journey to You

THE LADY CATHERINE DE BURGH SCENE-STEALER AWARD

Lady Catherine would refuse this award with a querulous wave of her hand. Scene-stealer? There’s no one worthy for her to steal it from when the show is naturally about her.

And, as Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy can attest, even the most hard-won romances can be usurped by a savagely witty side character.

A Special Mention here goes to Cao Cui Fen’s Old Mrs Feng in The Story of Minglan whose bottomless wisdom struck me as the most poetic and practical I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

But for this year, hands down and on more than one drama occasion, the brilliant Zeng Li monopolises the screen.

From her questionable mothering in Love Like the Galaxy, to her conniving Empress Rong An (or wrong-un, as I like to call her) in the flawed Unchained Love, to her more likable but no less impressive turns in Hidden Love and Only for Love, Zeng Li is my kind of scene usurper.

Zeng Li as Empress Rong An, Unchained Love

THE MR BINGLEY & JANE AWARD FOR BEST SECONDARY STORYLINE

Our OTPs in cdramas can suffer too at the hands of secondary characters when the emotional thread glitters a little more brightly than theirs.

Liu Yuning’s Haodu’s stunning commitment to first finding then protecting Zhao Lusi’s Li Leyan in The Long Ballad impeccably distracts from the main storyline, so much so I fast-forwarded most of it except when they appear. 😅

Like the bonds of the Bennett sisters, it’s the twin sisters He Xuan Lin as Liguang Qingkui and Landy Li’s Liguang Yetan who won me over in The Starry Love.

Their separate romances in the heavenly and demon realms were a bit predictable; it’s the bond between the sisters that’s the affecting love of this show.

However, the overall winners for me are Ryan Cheng’s Gong Shangjue and Lu Yu Xiao’s spy Shangguan Qian in My Journey to You.

The whole show is a dark and intricate web of manipulation which succeeds best when in the hands of these two characters.

I love the way I’m left guessing on what is true and what is a lie – and ultimately for me it doesn’t matter. I choose to believe in them. 🥰

Ryan Cheng as Gong Shangjue and Lu Yu Xiao as Shangguan Qian, My Journey to You

THE MR & MRS DARCY AWARD FOR BEST OTP

It’s a truth universally acknowledged that a good cdrama in possession of single lead characters, must be in wont of an OTP. 😆

As I hope I’ve made clear, a heartfelt romance is the key to my cdrama enjoyment. Yes, the characters might be interesting, the setting pretty, but if the One True Pairing is askew, my overall viewing pleasure dampens.

It’s unthinkable if Mr Darcy does not fall for Elizabeth Bennett after witnessing her true strength of character; it’s cruel if Elizabeth never understands Mr Darcy’s aloofness hides a kind and honest heart.

The crime if we didn’t embrace them as a couple and will them to fall in love!

Cdrama has a happy knack, generally, of developing love stories s-l-o-w-l-y and therefore, in believable fashion.

Often from opposing backgrounds – or borrowing the words from Story of Kunning Palace, the difference between the cloud in the sky and mud on the earth, ‘云泥之别’ – seeing two people slowly forced to trust each other by the tangled twists and turns of a gripping plot is incredibly gratifying to me.

The more sparks flying, the better!

Wu Lei’s intense General Ling is consumed by vengeance in beautifully directed Love Like the Galaxy but it’s his OTP with Zhao Lusi’s Niao Niao that ultimately lifts this show into the romance stratosphere.

Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms isn’t one of the most watched dramas for nothing. Mark Chao’s Ye Hua’s all-consuming love for Yang Mi’s Bai Qian is heaven-sent.

The relationship between Chen Kun’s Ningyi and Ni Ni’s Zhiwei in the epically long The Rise of Phoenixes unfolds organically from mistrust to comradery to reliance, to love – beautiful to watch, despite the terrible ending 😳😆🥰

But the award for the best OTP with the most Austen happy ending goes to… I hope, Liu Yuning’s assured Ning Yuanzhao and Liu Shishi’s assassin Ren Ruyi in A Journey to Love!

I say “hope” because as I type this, it hasn’t finished airing, but – as is often the way with my viewing pleasure – I am almost always most invested with the romance I’m currently watching.

Twenty-two episodes in, it has everything a truly great OTP should have: respect, kindness, friendship, and oodles of chemistry.

Plus, Liu Yuning 😘 I luff him 😍

Liu Yuning as Ning Yuanzhao and Liu Shishi as Ren Ruyi, A Journey to Love

AWARD FOR BEST KISS JANE AUSTEN WOULD LIKE TO HAVE WRITTEN

..or so I speculate!

Austen may not have been explicit, but of course those characters she designed to fall in love were just a page away from kissing.

Cdrama follows a similar restraint when it comes to physical displays of affection which means when they happen, it’s invariably incredibly meaningful if a tad brief.

However, there are several heart-stopping moments I think it’s only right I share with you 😊

Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu share some very nice kisses as Tantai Jin and Su Su in Till the End of the Moon and as Yuan Shuai and Jiang Jun in Love is Sweet. It is, indeed.

And Zhao Lusi’s Shang Zhi has great chemistry with Chen Zheyaun’s Duan Jiaxu in Hidden Love which ends up being, well, not so hidden.

While the infighting and backstabbing in The Sword and the Brocade isn’t quite my cup of tea, the love that blossoms between Tan Song Yun’s intelligent Luo Shiyi Niang and Wallace Chung’s Xu Lingyi is the highlight, leading to one of the best kisses I’ve seen in cdrama.

It’s totally swoony. I exaggerate not. Episode 35, start nine minutes in.

No need to thank me 😊

However, despite that overbearing streak sometimes coming into play, Zheng Linghe’s Xie Ju’an and Bai Lu’s Jiang Xuening share some gorgeously heated romance in Story of Kunning Palace.

I was quite smitten. Allow me to talk you through it.

First there was the hug…

The Hug: Zheng Linghe as Xie Ju’an and Bai Lu as Jiang Xuening, Story of Kunning Palace

Then there was the intensity after the hug – I got a little flustered here 🔥

The Look: Zheng Linghe as Xie Ju’an, Story of Kunning Palace

Next came the confession – yep, totally with Bai Lu and melting 🫠

The Melt: Zheng Linghe as Xie Ju’an and Bai Lu as Jiang Xuening, Story of Kunning Palace

Until at last, smooches 😅 Need I add more?

The Kiss: Zheng Linghe as Xie Ju’an and Bai Lu as Jiang Xuening, Story of Kunning Palace

THE MR COLLINS RAZZIE AWARD

As Mr Collins was the obsequious unwelcome cousin set to inherit the Bennetts family home, it’s only right the award for the less than welcome cdrama is named in his honour.

But what might not work for me, may for you and vice-versa. I mean, even Mr Collins gets married, right?

I know many people enjoyed New Life Begins, for example, but it just didn’t grab me, mostly because the romance element left me underwhelmed and I stopped watching.

Conversely, where others switched off, I powered through the troubled Unchained Love.

In part, it was because of my appreciation of scene-stealer Zeng Li as Empress “Wrong-un” and also because I really never tire of Wang Hedi’s eyebrows 😆 His Xiao Duo is magnificent – one of his best performances so far.

However, the show, on the brink of being fabulous, crumbles with the bizarre “humour” of the female lead, Chen Yuchi’s Bu Yinlu. Whether an acting choice, or directed to do so, her character makes for a painful and frustrating watch.

And speaking of Wang Hedi, he’s still impressive in Only for Love alongside the unfaltering Bai Lu.

And the rest of the cast are doing their best (hello Zeng Li!) with some likeable characters BUT it’s a very dry premise about investments and finance and… I’m bored even writing about it.

Oh dear. I think we have our Razzie winner. Sorry!

Wang Hedi as Shi Yan and Bai Lu as Zheng Shuyi, Only for Love

In closing

Well, thank you for allowing me to share my love of love in cdrama! It’s always best to finish with a quote, and who better than Elizabeth Bennett?

“I just finished the best cdrama and am the happiest creature in the world. Perhaps other people have said so before, but not one with such justice.”

Try one and let me know if you end up head over heels too 💏

Ele, what a super fun read, thanks for sharing <3

I could not agree more on Tantai Jin, what a breathtaking character!! Luo Yunxi was absolutely amazing and every iteration of the character was heartbreaking, exciting and a joy to watch. Sigh, I am halfway through my second watch of Til The End Of The Moon anyway 😀

I also really enjoyed the ensemble in My Journey To You, from the cunning, smug brothers to the back mountain friends, they were all fun to watch. The show itself had some logic fails and plot holes, and a less than ideal ending, but all in all it was a fun ride while it lasted.

I giggled a bit at you sharing The Sword and The Brocade kiss lol It is the slowest of slow burns between them but I really loved this show. It’s been a while since I watched it now but I felt that pairing was a very satisfying portrayal of contract marriage to friends and partners to ultimately lovers.

And in cdramaland nothing beat the chemistry of Zheng Linghe and Bai Lu for me in The Story of Kunning Palace. I remember texting Jennifer “how did this make it past the censors” lol 😀 *fanning myself

@Kate! Thanks so much for your comment! I come to it very late – only reminded of my post by writing another EOY post now! A whole year has gone by!

Ah, Zheng Linghe and Bai Lu were very melty in The Story of Kunning Palace, yes! So glad you’ve enjoyed Til the End of the Moon so much you rewatched it! I feel like Luo Yunxi really gave every iteration of that character everything he had. It was a joy for that reason.

Anyway, if you pick up this reply, thank you! And hope you get a chance to check out this year’s posts – lots of great Cdramas this year, even if almost all the endings of them were… horrible!!!!!!

@Ele – I watched the Sword & Brocade portion you shared with the Swoony Kiss!!!! I loved this Show and did not use the FF at all because even though some of the women were just awful in their actions. I sat in awe of all the scenes and loved all the female performances even if they made me so mad. And I just kept thinking and saying – all these smart woman caged into nastiness. If only they had been allowed to use their smarts in the World. Sigh. However, I love our spunky FL who outwits them all.

And about this Kiss Scene. Doesnt the look on Wallace Chung’s just rip your heart out, the desperation, desire and pain. Master class in acting. I know they are both professionals and she is one of the best as well, but I cant help thinking that scene must have taken her breath away even if it was just acting. Buuuut, I could be very wrong because of a tidbit I learned about a Behind the Scenes Tidbit about Buffy. I think its appropriate to share since you are a Buffy fan, too, no???

Did you ever read how SMG and David Boreanz had raw onion offs for their kiss scenes ???🤣🤣🤣 Quite funny.

ALSO, the other amazing part of that scene was the accompanying song by my favorite and phl1rxd, too, Charlie Zhou

Oh, @JJ I LOVE Zhou Shen and that song is lovely! I still remember you telling me the singer was a man, and it still blows my mind! My pick above was by him too – those high notes!! Extraordinary.

Agree, Wallace Chung has the best facial expression – my knees certainly wobble every single time I happen to rewatch it 😅

Ele, what a wonderful post. Sorry to be just now checking in, but I stand in awe of your brilliant juxtaposition of JA and KD. It was tremendous fun to read, even by a non-C-drama enthusiast. The only real overlap we had was with “Love Like the Galaxy”, where I agree with you on Zeng Li’s great performance (I am a sucker for flawed characters) and on Niao Niao’s awesome character, even if the drama as a whole didn’t hit me in the same way as it did you and so many others.

I’ve re-read your post twice just because it was so much fun. It makes me want to get back to Miss Austin again soon.

Thanks for sharing your insights and C-drama wisdom…

Aw, , that’s lovely – even my own mother hasn’t read it twice!! Ah, I would not describe my cdrama tastes as insightful or wise… I’m way too heart-driven and entirely forget that some characters I love are very murderous and reprehensible 😳😆 I have to say, if Love Like the Galaxy didn’t hit you in the heart-eyes, cdrama may not be your thing! Just as well there’s lots of choice out there!! Are you writing an end of year post? I look forward to it! xx

Good job you Ele!!

The Story of Minglan has stayed on my top Three CDrama list since it aired. I adored it and still do and when I clean up my MDL Watchlist want to do a re-watch.

Loved the Best Secondary Storyline!

I love Liu Yining as well! 🙆‍♀️🙆‍♀️🙆‍♀️🙆‍♀️🙆‍♀️💖💖💖💖

The kiss in The Sword and Brocade is good as those two are skilled in their profession. Thanks for sharing that scene. I never made it that far in the drama due to the cat fights.

I second that emotion of the FL in Unchained Love. You nailed the issue for me as I dropped it due to this bipolar writing of her character.

Great EOY review Ele! Smashing!

Hello ! Great to “see” you 😘 and thank you for reading! I watched The Story of Minglan because you’d thought so highly of it – I can totally see why it’s in your top 3! It will always be my go to for language. So poetic! I needed to watch with a notebook to jot down the wisdom and the metaphor – next watch!

I’m glad I could share the one excellent reason for continuing to watch The Sword and the Brocade until episode 35 (I had fast-forwarded a fair bit to get there, mind, but felt totally rewarded for not giving up entirely!!) It is extremely well acted, especially given I was skimming the show, and yet I felt every feeling – the perfect, emotive kiss 😍

Wasn’t it annoying about Unchained Love! I still feel quite cross about it. If she’s played / been directed to play it straight, as Wang Hedi, I could have overlooked she was basically lazy. But poor character paired with awful acting and it killed the show. Grumble, grumble…

Ele, a very creative post, I loved your categories and layout as a fellow Jane Austen fan!! I have grown to appreciate cdramas much more, although I am still slowly watching more of them, so it’s awesome how you’ve showed your love for them. How could I NOT love Luo Yunxi as Tantai Jin, truly one of the standouts for me too. I also knew *exactly* which scene in The Sword And The Brocade that you were referring to before clicking on the video. I didn’t love all parts of it either, but the slow burn of the pairing was so great to me.

I will have to watch some of the other ones you mentioned here. I think I could watch Bai Lu in a lot of things, so SOKP is definitely still on my list!

@Uyen, hooray!! I’m so happy to hear you loved Tantai Jin too – I was beginning to wonder if I was alone in my appreciation 😄

Ha! That kiss really took me by surprise. I feel like every actor and actress should be made to watch and learn – and most especially every writer and director – THAT is the way to convey a true OTP kiss moment that’s entirely and clearly wanted on both sides 😄🙄😉😘

I hafta say (as Natalia rightly pointed out in her post) Story of Kunning Palace has a couple of super-dodgy kissing moments. But, oh, darn it, I unforgivably forgave it because the relationship to my mind is right for them both, and the male lead has been through… stuff. Do watch it, Uyen!! I need to know your thoughts!

Uyen and Ele – Tantai Jin had me at the scene in the courtyard where he was on his knees. It is this scene that sustained me throughout the bloated parts and I do not think I will ever forget it. I actually shed tears watching him suffer from Bai Liu’s cruelty… Poor Tantai Jin! 😥😥😥😭😭😭

@Ele – What a fabulous post!!! I love how you combined Cdramas and Jane Austen together!!! Is this the part where I admit I have only seen the movies, but not read her novels 🫣

Im late to comment because I have been busy working the keys to get my EOY out and so thrilled to see we have some samesies in the Cdramaland!!!

Tantai Jin. Do we need to say more than his name?

WOW! You hung in there with Legend of Zhuohua and Mu Zhuohua wins the Elizabeth Bennett award!!! She is now in A Wonderland of Love if you didnt already know. 🙂

My Journey to you! What a journey. So funny and so true “Weird isolation of the Back Hill”.

I am so thrilled to see you highlight Zeng Li!!! Loved her performance in LLTG especially at the end. And was so surprised to see her in a modern piece without armor in Hidden Love!

*Squeal * Starry Love!!!! I say no more at the moment 🙂

*Squeal* Ni Ni!!!!! I really want to see The Rise of Phoenixes. But that one is looooooooong, right?

YES!!!!! Sword and Brocade !!! Getting a highlight it otally deserves!!!

Wasnt that Drama FABULOUS! And those two leads. I would have to agree that kiss is one of the best we have seen in Cdrama land. I keep on wanting to do a rewatch of Sword and Brocade. I love both leads equally!!!

Awwww, New Life Begins 🙁 I am one of the ones who enjoyed this Cdrama. Some great unexpected acting moments later in the Show from supporting characters. I think this was a gem even if it was easy with a happy ending. But at least you mentioned the Show 🙂

While I cannot provide any quotes, I can provide an OST that we listen to weekly around here. Does that count? 🙂

Which ones have you seen???

https://screenrant.com/pride-and-prejudice-best-adaptations-ranked/#pride-and-prejudice-1967

P&J 1995
My first Jane Austen movie and my favorite 🥰

P&J 2005
A fine remake and yes Kiera Knightly was fantastic as well as the rest of the cast 🥰

Bridget Jones’s Dairy 2001
Who doesnt love this one? I heard Renee did a British accent proud? Or did I hear that wrong?

Bride & Prejudice 2004
I did see this one!! How could I not! Ohhh, I wonder if Alexandra has?!!!!

P&J & Zombies 2016
Ugh, this could have been GREAT! Even though I cant stand Zombies, I do love the FL – Lily James.

What a fantabulous post! I’ve watched several of the dramas you referred to as my drama calendar this year was mostly filled with cdramas (and gzillion donghuas, ha).

Though romance isn’t genereally the main draw for me, there have undoubtedly been few OTPs this year that made even the grumpy old gurmudgeon like me get a bit swoony. 😀 As much as I’m liking the OTP in A Journey to Love (and I do like them a lot) my fave one is still Jiu Er/Han Zheng from Warm on a Cold Night. But I posted over there that this show pretty much summarises my relationship with my husband, in that I’m like a freezer, and he’s like a radiator and it is literally the number one reason I married him! The writer must have had the same experience, I’m sure. It is a homage to love via poor circulation!

Ele, this is delightful! And, as usual, I’m adding at least three new dramas to my list. Thank you.

Cdramas were a boon to my watching experience this year, too. How fun to continue expanding our interests!

I’ve been hearing about Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms forever, so that’s #1. Story of Minglan is another. And #3 is The Sword and the Brocade. These may require some stamina, but I think I’m up for it, over 2024! (Sorry for the delay in responding – just back from the holidays! Hope yours were great.)

And add The Story of Kunning Palace for good measure!

@Leslie let me know how you get on with any of those shows! They do I suppose take a certain amount of stamina, but I feel like that’s just in the first few episodes, and then it’s like flying!! I tend to only watch one episode a day, two tops, so it’s like a month or maybe two months submerged in the most beautiful worlds. It’s self-investment, really 😅 Totally good for the soul! xx

Absolutely fabulous, Ele 😉 I look forward to the next chapter in your musings – there has to be one 😊

It’s official. I have watched more CDramas this year than any other type. The diversity regarding costumes, sets, storylines, graphics, characters, acting and premise are all there. I think this morning I was looking at some sets being made for Zhao Lu Si’s next drama. It’s impressive what is being constructed. No CGI at this point.

I’m afraid I have to nod my head in agreement with your Razzie winner. I didn’t find the subject matter boring because it’s of interest to me. However, I found Dylan was taking too long to “normalise” and I had to move on. I enjoyed Bai Lu’s performance and Niao Niao’s mum’s performance as the deputy chief editor 🤩

I am steadily working my way through A Journey to Love – it really is something special. Then there is Wonderland of Love. Another worthy watch with Jing Tian leading the way. She is great in this.

The Story of Minglan is in my all time Top 10. In fact it’s at number 7. I had to watch each episode as it was released.

There are many, many shows slotted in for our favourite CDrama actors for next year. Picking the ones to watch is going to be an even greater challenge. As Jane Austen wrote: “Ah! There is nothing like staying at home, for real comfort,” especially if it involves watching a drama or two 😊😊😊

Oh, , that’s a brilliant quote!! I really wanted to have watched Wonderland of Love but I just couldn’t not start watching A Journey to Love – but I will get to it. Jing Tian has such a lovely open face. I’m quite fond of Feng Shaofeng too so it was good seeing him in something else, even if he seemed to be dubbed? Ah, I too would rate The Story of Minglan in my top 10 cdramas. I thought the subbers on Viki really outdid themselves. The language of that show is BRILLIANT!!!! Completely fascinating, especially in the mouth of the grandmother. I look forward to seeing your year’s winners!

@Ele – I’m watching Ep 31 of Wonderland of Love as I write. It’s epic, on the back of Ep 30. I will be watching the next episode from A Journey to Love after this 🤩 The language in Minglan was superb. Feng Shaofeng did seem dubbed at times – maybe he dubbed himself 😉

I can’t work out if Shaofeng is dubbed in Minglan or Legend of Zhouhua, but he definitely sounds different! I will look forward to Wonderland of Love but already behind on A Journey to Love. Too many cdrama hours, not enough time 🙂

@Ele – basically in Minglan I understand that most of the cast dubbed themselves (quite a common practice I understand) so, that is Shaofeng’s actual voice we hear.

Ele!!!
I expected nothing less than a Jane Austen angle in the EOY post by a true citizen of Bath! I really enjoyed that, as a fellow fan of Ms Austen’s literary work. Your analogies really do work (minus the mass murder tendencies of cdrama protagonists – be it Ling Buyi, Xie Wei or Dongfang Qingcang – Tantai Jin I won’t even mention).
Also, I kind of regret that you and I are not neighbors or something – I feel we would make great drama binging buddies!
You will see when my post goes up (I think tomorrow?) that we have a lot of shows in common this year, though it seems that our tastes differ a little… not on the basics, however (namely, Wang Hedi’s eye brows).
I am also with you concerning the OTP for this year: Up to episode 25, Ren Ruyi and Ning Yuanzhou in A Journey to Love are the perfect (power) couple. However, I did not include an OTP award in my post for fear of jinxing it – we still have quite a few episodes to go… And, although the OTP from Kunning Palace had its flaws (more of that tomorrow), I sincerely think the scene where Xie Wei consoles Jiang Xuening when she says that she can never find anyone better than Zhang Zhe and he replies “you will find someone more suitable” was kind of genious. After all, OTPs are about suitability.
Last comment from me, intended for those who are not into Cdramas yet: If you feel like giving them a try, they are undoubtedly worth it, but be prepared for a LOT of filters, as showcased by Ele’s screenshots above!

Ele, thank you!

@Natalia, NOOOOOOO!!!!!! I hadn’t even realised all my Mr Darcy picks were also a little loose with murdery-type vengeances 😭😆😳 I clearly have some deep-seated issues here!! Oh, but I can’t help finding something very appealing about characters whose inner worlds are contrary to how they appear to the outside world, most especially when they seem like villains but are actually kind, fiercely loyal, desperately lonely souls!! Give me an antihero over a regular hero any day! Don’t get me wrong, murdery types are not OK 😂

Really looking forward to your post! I notice over on Patreon we share interests in the same shows. OK, you’re probably right to avoid the murdery characters… And, yes, fingers crossed for A Journey to Love 😬

Omo, Ele! You have done Miss Austen herself proud with your light, bright and sparkling wit! I love how you’ve renamed the awards to honour the Pride and Prejudice characters! Me and female classmates had a wonderful time studying Pride and Prejudice for our ‘A’ Levels. Our male classmates, not so much, haha! I still remember our (male) literature teacher screening the 1995 Pride and Prejudice for us in class, and he seemed very smitten with Jennifer Ehle’s Elizabeth 😂

@Elaine, bless you!! That’s very kind. You can’t really go wrong with Jane Austen, in my opinion – even my husband has come round to it over the years and can recite some lines!! I have trained him well 😉

Thank you very much Ele for a fantastic start to the EOY posts. Very well crafted using the analogy with Jane Austen’s work. That was a great read and it reaffirmed my interest in quite a few C-Drama that you mentioned there. Story of Kunning Palace, Love Like the Galaxy and Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms in particular. I have watched Bai Lu in only one drama so far (Love is Sweet) but I liked her a lot and she stars in quite a few of the works you spoke about. 🙂

Hello, @ABV! Oh, you won’t regret watching any of those three – although Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms was my first drama set in the heavens so it took a bit of lens adjustment. Well worth it! I adored Love Like the Galaxy. It really reminded me of Jane Austen very much. Story of Kunning Palace really grabbed me too. I knew I’d like Bai Lu (you’re right, I did binge her dramas this year!) but I hadn’t expected to like Zhang Linghe as much as he’d underwhelmed me in previous shows. But, yes, I haven’t yet seen Bai Lu not deliver, even when I haven’t liked the drama that much (such as Only for Love and also One and Only). Let us know how you get on watching!

I have not earnestly tried any Wuxia or Historical C-Drama yet but these three are top of the pile when it comes to either genre. Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms and Love Like the Galaxy are epic romances which I tend to love a lot so I do have quite some motivation to try them. Only hesitant because of the length. But once I start, I should be fine.

Story of Kunning Palace, I’m interested in for Bai Lu mainly. But I’ve heard that it is an excellent drama in its own right. Glad to hear that Bai Lu delivered in every drama that you have seen.

I was actually ready to jump into Only For Love when it was first announced but by the time it finished airing, the reception was lukewarm which is why I ended up not watching it.

Oh ABV, do go for it – especially Love Like the Galaxy. I can’t imagine you won’t love it! Only for Love isn’t terrible, but I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are devoted to Bai Lu or Wang Hedi – or both! Looking forward to reading your review. xx

Will do. I am pretty sure that I’ll love it.

I do like both but I do not know if I want to take a chance at this juncture.

I finally got back to trying out a C- Drama again after quite a while. Picked up Nothing But You.

Ha, @MC! Watch more cdramas!! I realise Jane Austen is much less applicable than our kdramas, especially when it comes to male leads – they can be so dark!!
