Patreon Year End Awards: j3ffc’s Year In Dramas 2023!

Hey everyone!

Like what we did for the past couple of years, we’re having guest posts from the lovely folks on Patreon, to help us take stock of our drama years, yay! 🥳

We’ll be seeing about 2 guest posts per week, and this will unfold into January 2023, and that’s perfectly ok.

My annual year-in-review, which usually comes out in December, will also come out in January (or thereabouts 😅), after all the guest posts have been published.

If you missed our earlier posts, you can check them out as follows: Ele, Natalia, JJ, Sean.

Today, I’m pleased to announce that j3ffc is sharing his drama year.

Don’t be fooled by j3ffc’s trademark self-deprecating humor, you guys; the more I get to know him, the more I feel that j3ffc’s more imaginative, insightful and wise than he might want you to think.

Plus, he’s thoughtful, kind, and really funny too. Very often I find myself giggling out loud at j3ffc’s witty comments. Thank you j3ffc, for just being you. 🥰

If you missed it, I highly recommend checking out j3ffc’s dream drama post, where he took a real-life incident featured in a news article, and turned it into a kdrama for us, complete with casting picks. 🤩 You can check it out here!

I hope you guys enjoy!

~ KFG ❤️

J3ffc’s Year in Drama 2023

WHERE I STARTED AND WHERE I ENDED UP THIS YEAR

I started my first Korean drama on 2/2/2018; it was “Strong Girl Bong-soon” starring Park Bo-young (currently in “Daily Dose of Sunshine”) and Park Hyung-sik (“Soundtrack #1”).

A long-time fan of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”, I dug the goofy vibe and the romcom ´ supernatural thriller genre mashup and thought I’d check out more.

My next shows were “Oh My Ghost” (also with PBY), “Age of Youth” (where a young Park Eun-bin (“Castaway Diva”) stood out in the ensemble cast – still my favorite role she’s ever done), “Descendants of the Sun” (with Song Hye-kyo, in this year’s “The Glory”), and “Let’s Eat” (starring Lee Soo-kyung, which sounds like Lee Sung-kyung, who’s in “Call It Love” and “Dr. Romantic” seasons 2 and 3).

By the time LE E 16 rolled around on Christmas eve of that year, I was a full-on K-drama enthusiast, with a bias for slice-of-life and romcom stories.

And about a year after that I stopped telling people that I liked “Korean soap operas.”

With time, I have branched out to sample all genres. I take a lot of suggestions from the KFG community here and at Patreon (come on over!) but am not immune to FOMO (“Descendants” was an early example).

I tend to watch dramas wedged in between work and family, interrupted by numerous 3-4-second naps.

View of me from inside my TV

I am a researcher and teacher in the US. I trained as a chemist but do lots of collaborative work with medical researchers as well.

I also work as a journal editor and write stuff (my standard line is that I write so many research proposals I’m really a science fiction writer).

So, I’m basically this guy:

MY YEAR IN DRAMA

The 2023 shows I watched were: A Time Called You | Alchemy of Souls, Part 2 | Call It Love | Castaway Diva | Crash Course in Romance | Doona! | My Lovely Liar | One Day Off | See You in My 19th Life | Silent (J-drama) | Soundtrack #1 | Strong Girl Nam-Soon | The Glory | The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House (J-drama)

And am still watching, also from this year: Daily Dose of Sunshine | Moving | Welcome to Samdal-ri

And older shows that I finished were:

Business Proposal |Romance is a Bonus Book | Cheers to Me (rewatch) | Dr. Romantic 2 | Goblin | Hospital Playlist | I Am Not a Robot (informal group watch, rewatch) | Love Like the Galaxy | Move to Heaven (group watch) | Our Beloved Summer | Soulmate |The Princess’s Man (group watch) | Uncanny Counter | Winter Sonata (group watch)

And there were movies too: 20th Century Girl | Ajooma | Kill Bok-soon | Someday or One Day | The Revenge | The Villainess | The Witch: Subversion | The Witch: The Other One (ff-ed with eyes mostly shut).

Don’t know why I tilted so hard toward horror and violence here; maybe the bad example of Mr. Merij Lewis (yes, I am kicking a man while he’s down –  feel better soon, Merij!).

So, inspired by the truly dedicated among us, I watched a personal best of 27 full dramas this year!! That’s an increase of 450% over last year.

Unfortunately, my academic output went down by 42% as well, which is another reason I can’t talk about K-dramas at work.

On the other hand, relatively few of the shows made a strong visceral impact on me.

There were just enough innovative shows to keep me going, but then again there was a good number that I found entertaining but lacked the special feeling that I associate with my early drama-watching days.

My tastes haven’t changed that much – that’s one reason I cited actors from my formative dramas who made appearances this year. So, I tend to ascribe it to differences in writing and production.

Interestingly, during my “Goblin” watch, there was something about the melancholic feel of the show, plus its odd humor, and the fact that it starred one of the all-time K-drama great leading men, Gong Yoo, that made me feel as though it was 2018 all over again.

It would be in my top 3 if I included older shows in the group, being very much along the lines of what drew me to K-drama’s as well. As a group I enjoyed the older dramas more than the 2023 slate.

Another one that bears comment on is “Strong Girl Nam-soon”, starring Emmy winner Lee Yoo-mi, since it is a direct sequel to my first show, “Bong-soon”, same writer and all.

This time around, I could recognize the tropes, which somehow made the viewing less novel.

To its credit, while the show was still full of cringey humor, it was not as bad as the first time around and the production was much lighter on horrific stereotypes. I still watched it – had to! – but this time I recognized it for what it was.

Around Patreon, there was a lot of love for “Alchemy of Souls” and, oh-my-goodness for “Love Like the Galaxy”. I did enjoy “Alchemy” quite a bit but the mythology got the best of me at times. I’ll let Seo Yul speak for me here:

And while I do appreciate the Pretty and Epic-ocity and Sheer Godforsaken Length of C-dramas, I really do, but am not quite on the train with the outpouring of love for, well, “Love.”

It kept my attention, I did enjoy the story and cast (especially thought that Zhao Lusi made for an awesomely spunky heroine), but never did get to the point where I was emotionally invested in the show.

And when it, ended, I got all Peggy Lee about it.

But I’ll take another running start at one – inspired by Ele’s wonderful post – and who knows? Maybe someday my inner Wuxia Fanboy will come pouring out.

DRAMAS OF THE YEAR

  1. Call It Love
  2. The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House
  3. One Day Off

Of these, CIL is the only traditional K-drama in my top three, but it hit all of the buttons for me.

A great cast, slice of life presentation, and just enough humor to leaven a serious story about revenge and forgiveness.

I enjoyed the family interplay and, with only a few minor missteps, thought that the characters were believable as real people (this show has by far the most reasonable version of noble idiocy that I can remember).

The production values were great as well, especially in terms of the lighting design. I even loved the opening credits.

The other two are on the list not because I think they were over-the-top brilliant but just because, well, I liked them.

“Makanai” was lovely and comforting, which I wasn’t expecting given the subject matter (maikos are Kyoto geishas in training). In addition, I’m a sucker for food-focused stories.

And I’m making a mini-pitch for “One Day Off”, which scratched my art-house itch, with an understated performance by Lee Na-young, who was also winning in “Romance is a Bonus Book”.

It’s an anthology show with no real plot but felt great on grey Sunday afternoons with a cuppa Joe in hand. One can find many worse ways of using 25 minutes than watching Episode 5, which plays perfectly as standalone short story.

ACTORS OF THE YEAR

Lee Sung-kyung | Han Suk-kyu

I’m selecting co-actors of the year for diametrically opposed reasons.

First up is Lee Sung-kyung, has done terrific work as a comic or mixed genre actor for years (I first saw her in “Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo”).

This year, her work as the distressed “part-timer” in “Call It Love” just brought another set of layers to her palette and, in my mind, elevated her to a new level of accomplishment. It was a subtle and complex role.

In the meantime, she hadn’t missed a beat in more mainstream fare, exemplified by her continuing role in the “Dr. Romantic” series as an ambitious but squeamish OR doc. I look forward to what she does in the future.

I am always impressed when people play away from type and do it well.

Other veteran actors had comparable success this year, such as Song Hye-kyo, who leveraged her ice-queen persona effectively in “The Glory”.

And I liked “Doona!”, its ending!, and Suzy’s! terrific performance in the title role (coming as it did off of her triumph in last year’s “New York State of Mind”).

And Park Bo-young is well on her way to doing something comparable in “Daily Dose of Sunshine” (I’m only on E6 as of this writing.).

I’m no less impressed by Han Suk-kyu’s opposite but nonetheless rare feat in K-dramaland, to be a franchise anchor as Kim-sabu – “Dr. Romantic” himself.

He has created a character that is familiar as can be (sort of a mashup between House, Doc Martin, maybe a bit of Hawkeye Pierce in there) but nonetheless all his own (“okay!”).

We can argue about the wisdom of sequels in K-dramas (I don’t love them) but that doesn’t diminish Actor Han’s accomplishment over the last few years.

SUPPORTING ACTORS OF THE YEAR

Kim Joo-hun | Kaho

Kim Joo-hun is now officially the industry’s go-to guy for a drama adversary with depth and charisma, having played three versions of this character type in “Dr. Romantic”, “Castaway Diva”, and “Soundtrack #1”.

For my money, a “villain” who is sympathetic and complex beats the moustache-twirling type anytime (although Byeon Woo-seok in “Strong Girl Nam Soon” certainly appealed to the female fan contingent and had a pretty good backstory to fill out his Resume of Evil).

So what of KJH’s characters? He is great at what he does and has risen to the top of whatever industry he is in.

One can see why: he’s a workaholic, highly ambitious, and willing to do what is necessary to succeed.

Where does that drive come from? Partly from the burden of talent, one supposes, and partly due to some past trauma? Perhaps he comes from a poor background. Perhaps he has had problems with public transportation. We don’t know, really.

And while he is not above using people to achieve his aims, he is transparent about his plans and motives and rarely treats his competitors poorly.

He has similar characteristics in his personal life, pursuing his intended affections with the same sort of strategic approach that he might apply in business.

With his Cary Grant looks, grown up wardrobe (no fuzzy Lee Min-ho “Legend of the Blue Sea” sweaters to be found here), and a keen ability to understand people (including his rivals), he is an impressive suitor.

And in at least one case, he has maintained his feelings for a woman long after the relationship seems to have ended.

Surely this guy would be a major catch in real life.

In “Silent”, Kaho plays Nana, a born-deaf friend of the ML who has been nursing a crush on him for years.

I don’t want to spoil the show for anyone who had not yet seen it (and I do recommend it highly), I’ll only say that Nana had the singlemost moving scene I saw in a drama this year.

She is another believable character – wielding snark through signing while wearing her heart on her sleeve.

Kaho has quite a distinguished resume – she was also good as a fiancée-in-denial in last year’s J-dorama “First Love” – and I would certainly pay attention to her in other roles.

(I did try the movie “Tokyo Vampire Hotel” but checked out after about 10 minutes. Just. Too. Much.)

SPECIAL EXISTENTIAL ANGST SUPPORTING ACTOR AWARD

All of the Losers in K-dramaland Love

OK, so there are many times when someone is just not right and you just move on.

On the other hand, there have been so, so many times I have wanted to shake up a K-drama lead, shouting,

“Hey! YOU! There is this magnificent person RIGHT THERE who would be perfect for you! They are fantastic! So what?! You didn’t play in the sandbox or share crayons or whatever as little kids, so you are blinded to – oh, forget about it. I see you gazing at your childhood sweetheart with puppy eyes and they aren’t even listening at this point.”

At this point, the most you can hope for these lovers unrequited is that they’ll be reincarnated as a lead sometime soon.

This is for them.

OTP OF THE YEAR

Ella and K

The concept of the OTP is baked into the form and has a rich history, with the childhood-friends-to-lovers variant being particularly prevalent in K-dramaland. And that’s fine.

But while this story form was new(ish) when “Winter Sonata” fatefully appeared on the scene, I just wish we’d have a bit of genuine romantic tension from time to time.

Consider the somersaults that the “Reply [Insert year here]” went through to accomplish just that. It doesn’t have to be that hard, writers.

But when it happens in real life…sigh. All cynicism melts away, and it’s unexpected and soulful and life-affirming.

Thanks to Ella for sharing her story and most sincere wishes to her and K as they create their own life soundtrack.

RAZZIE OF THE YEAR

No Award Given

While there were plenty of missteps and missed opportunities in dramas this year, there was no show that stood out as representing a huge disappointment.

I would ding a few shows for starting out strong and then fading (I’m looking at you, “Crash Course in Romance” and “My Lovely Liar”), but that pretty much comes with the territory.

If anything, I’d like to see shows taking bigger chances and failing than playing it safe, which is how most of 2023 played out.

BEST WISHES FOR 2023

I would like to acknowledge kfangurl for her outstanding work again this challenging year…best of luck to you as you continue to create and reinvent this community.

I am especially grateful for having the opportunity to step on the big stage and share my “thoughts.”

And thanks as well to the fabulous Verdict and Patreon contributors for their camaraderie and drama insights.

Best wishes to all for a 2024 filled with only the right kinds of drama.

Lovely EOY rundown. I’m watching the Mikanai show right now. It is so Yummy! It makes me happy how excited Kiyo gets at the thought and act of cooking! Your writing style makes me smile. So fun!

I also really liked One Day Off. I hope more people will give it some love. I think it often has gotten overlooked because it is short and unassuming. It says a lot.

Your apt “Sheer Godforsaken length of C-dramas” made me bust out laughing! This is actually why I’ve tried but have a hard time watching the Cs. The one C I have “finished” watching had me fast forwarding though vast stretches of show.

J3ffc – excellent EOY review.  Let me thank you for all the great comments in Winter Sonata. You made me laugh a lot this year and I appreciate it. 💖

I also watched Strong Girl Nam soon and frankly I was completely enamored with Lee Chang Ho (the secretary to the rich business man Bread Song). I legit cracked up hard whenever he was on my screen. OMG he was funny. Yes, the cringe factor was strong in that one.

I say we “…Just keep Dancing” in 2024. Note – I have not heard this in years and just listening to the lyrics got me hysterical after all these years. How come I never noticed how droll they were before?

One Day Off was a little delightful and golden hidden gem. 💎

Kim Joo Hun – he is one of my favorites and the public transportation comment left me in tears. 🚌

I want to get back those 5 minutes I just lost to the Tokyo Vampire Hotel trailer…please. WTH did I just see? Yes j3ffc, it was Just. Too. Much. 🧛‍♀️🧛‍♂️😣😣😣

Loved your OTP.

Here is to another year of drama and more of your stellar comments and song references. Do not feel bad about bypassing CDrama. You have to have a thing for them, really, but if you get hooked you are really hooked.

Thanks so much, phl1rxd! Winter Sonata was a great example of how watching the show was so many times better with the group than it would have been on our own. (And I am so pleased that there are a few of you out there who appreciate the occasional oddball musical comments. 🎶😂) Thanks for taking these journeys (and sticking it out the bitter end….)

Oh, yes, on Lee Chang Ho; I’d not seen him before and he was a hoot!

Thanks again for the kind words and see you soon. Happy new year!

Dear J3ffc,

it was wonderful reading your year end review but even more special finding out about being the OTP of the year! I could cry! Thank you so much! I feel super honoured! I shared it with K and he was so touched too!

Thank you KFG for pointing it out.

It was such an easy choice, Ella! Your story has touched many of us on the blog and we are so grateful to you for sharing it. All blessings to you in the new year and all those that follow.

(And we look forward to seeing you in these here parts, too!)

j3ffc — you managed to round up some pretty good-to-great shows on your EOY list. It pays to be discriminating, no doubt. Glad to see that you found Goblin worthwhile; I’ve long said that you either manage to tune into its vibe (melancholic is one good descriptor, as you note) and get sucked in, or…not.

Here’s hoping you manage to keep culling out the good shows to watch in the coming year!

Thanks both for the comment, Trent, and for being such a patient guide over the year. It’s because of you (and KFG, and Sean, and Jennifer, and….everyone) that I manage to optimize the chance that a given show will appeal.

Take care and best holiday wishes!

J3ffc! What a great collection of dramas for 2023.

I too often struggle to find the emotional connection to overlong cdramas (with rare exceptions). Til The End of The Moon swept me away this year and I was rarely this invested in any fantasy cdrama.

Your description of Kim Saboo is perfect and now that you mention it, there is a little bit of Hawkeye Pierce in him 🤔😍

I laughed out loud at your description of the poor overlooked character doomed to fail just because he didn‘t share his crayons as a kid 🤣 Spot on lol

Happy Holidays and here‘s to more great dramas in 2024.

@CICUK, thanks! I’ve not heard of “Til the End….” but will keep in mind for the future. And thanks for validating my sense of Hawkeye —> Kim Sabu. Hawkeye did spend a fair amount of time in Korea, remember….😂

Happy holidays to you too!

J3ffc, I will shamelessly assume that this lack of special feeling with respect to Kdramas is similar to my own lack of special feeling and possibly the fact (?) that Kdramas are becoming a little bit repetitive, better produced but less “fresh”. Personally, I find myself looking more and more towards China where things still seem less professional, if you understand my meaning.

And, excellent choice of OTP!

My best wishes!

Reply to  Natalia

@Natalia, I think you are right about the plots being more repetitive (KFG’s notes on “Samdal-ri” provide some good examples). I don’t have as much experienced with the Chinese shows, but except for “Someday or One Day” I haven’t found them to be particularly more innovative. In the spirit of the holidays, I keep holding out hope though. It also helps to have a large backlog of older show to work through.

THANKS for your note and best wishes for a great new year!

Thanks SO MUCH to Kfangurl for providing this wonderful forum and excellent proofreading and composition – the post looks so much better than I imagined it would. Not to mention your incredibly kind comments (blush ☺️).

I hope you are settling in for a fine holiday, if you celebrate it, and are not working too hard in any event. Take care of yourself.

Peace.

I received a shout-out! So cool. Thanks, man.

I’d glad you felt good about how Doona (on Netflix) ended. I need to back get to that one, having stalled 2/3s through.

As you mentioned, Lee Na-young‘s One Day Off (on Viki) is not a show one feels compelled to binge. Each 1/2 episode is essentially a separate short story, seen through the eyes of her character. We’ve been using it a palette cleanser between other shows.

Lens adjustment recommendation for anyone starting One Day Off: We haven’t seen the last episode, so I don’t know what vibe it ends on. But about midway through we realized these stories appear to be exploring her character’s discontent — reflected in some episodes by the less-well disguised sadness we see in the people she encounters. Thus, you’ll definitely want to consider a “savored melancholy” lens to appreciate this one. It’s a really interesting show, but it lies within a niche you’d expect from indie films, not TV. (Of course, I would’ve watched it had Lee Na-young merely read a dictionary aloud for 6 hours. lol)

We saw both Japanese shows you mentioned – Silent and First Love (Netflix) – featuring actress Kaho as a standout supporting character. As I recall, @JJ recommended them to me. Both are great shows – First Love also flirts with savored melancholy, btw – and both reinforce my rant that K-drama would be more consistently great if shows weren’t stretched out willy-nilly to 16 hours or more.

The shorter 8-12 episodes of a Japanese dorama works really well for less complex romance stories, in particular. If Jane Austen can be done justice in a Masterpiece Theatre mini-series of that length, most K-romance stories certainly can. Adding fluff or falling back on annoying tropes to delay resolution just weakens the story.

@Merij! Thanks for reading. I hope that you are recovering well and enjoying a little extra (solo) drama time as a consequence.

I love your phrase “savored melancholy” and will appropriate it going forward. That is definitely the lens for “Doona!” although it’s a tad more complicated than that.

And thanks for also pitching for “One Day Off”. I watched as pretty much you did (and I will note as non-spoilers as possible that your sense about the ending is accurate). One reason I specifically called out E5 is that it is, in my opinion, the best of the series and the one that works best as a standalone. Did you ever check out “Cheers to Me”? Not as good but has some of the same vibe.

100% on the length of J vs. K dramas. I was surprised at just how much I liked the J-doramas this year and will seek out more. I am reminded of John Cleese who, when asked about a “Fawlty Towers” reboot, noted that Shakespeare only got three hours out of Hamlet. And, just between us guys, I will admit to a tiny crush on Kaho.

Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery and great new year. Thanks for all of the suggestions and looking forward to more.

Aw. , I already loved you because you’re a Buffy fan, but now you go and mention my post in your post and I’m all 🥹 He, he, please do become a Wuxia fanboy!!! Though I do think if Love Like the Galaxy couldn’t bring out your heart-eyes, maybe nothing will… though I will keep hoping!

I love your Special Existential Angst Supporting Actor Award! And while I agree with you the whole but-we-knew-each-other-in-childhood thing is super aggravating*, I must remind you of when second-lead, Tae-ha, got Kim Hye-won instead of *my* fabulous Lee Daegil in Chuno!! It was not OK 😭 Not. OK.

I can only suggest you try A Journey to Love – though I haven’t finished watching it yet. For one, the OTP doesn’t start in childhood AND it is a mature reflection of two people falling in love… Let’s hope for more like it in 2024!

*side note: I met my husband in teen-hood. I can only apologise for this kdrama intrusion on my life 😆

Thanks for reading, @Ele, and for sharing a toast to the SEASAA! No way could I not reference your comprehensive and endlessly entertaining post this year. I appreciate your suggestion and promise to give AJTL a try when I get through my current block. And, while, as Tom Petty might point out, “even the losers get lucky sometime” I would, as a proud former member of the losers club, continue to hold out for more, well, drama in our dramas. Thanks especially for being such a great member of our little community and best wishes for a properly festive holiday season!

Thank you very much for your work, again this year. I have the same Kdrama preferences as you so you really are my reference. I enjoy after watching a drama, reading your detailed reviews about it. You are so right about Kfangurl being the internet’s Queen of A-drama criticism and fandom (I am officially coining A-drama to stand for “Asian drama” and to avoid having to cite every country if we mean more than one). If you do check out those shows I hope you enjoy them (I’d recommend reading Merij’s comments above re “One Day Off” for a very useful lens adjustment). Happy holidays to you too.

Hilarious commentary, as always, j3ffc! I do have to say that while I dislike the age gap in Goblin, it did bring me back to dramaland and it was just so aesthetic and poignant at times, so I do have a soft spot for it. I totally cracked up at your Peggy Lee’s response to LLTG. And all the losers in love in dramaland HAHAHAHA, I salute your mind!! Yes to OTP, clearly the best

Thanks for reading, @uyen. I hear you wrt to the age gap in Goblin (I assume you’re talking about the apparent age gap of 10-20 years or whatever, and not the hundreds of years age gap 😳). I was shocked at how different she looked in that Nespresso commercial with George Clooney and Julia Garner….

But, as I mentioned, “Goblin” did have that special early to mid drama-era feel that seems largely missing nowadays (and it also had Yoo In-na!). But we perservere because we hope, no?

Thanks for your super kind comments and in sharing a joke or two. Take care!

Fabulous post j3ffc. Thank you very much. Really enjoyed reading through it. The use of screenshots for humour was great and the whole post had a tinge of witty humour in it.

Very apt shout out for the OTP of the year as well. 🙂

As for the titles themselves, nice mentions and I need to pick up Silent (J-drama).

Glad that you pointed out Kim Joo Hun. I always love having him on my screen and I would like to see him in a prominent lead role soon.

I’ll forgive you for your comments on Love Like the Galaxy….for now.

I have firm belief your inner Wuxia Fanboy will come running out fellow Buffy Fan. We just have to find you the right one!!!

Lee Na Young is just great in Romance is a Bonus Book. Did you know SUGA from BTS interviewed her on his YouTube Show??? Some sweet moments there. You must watch it!!!

Kim SaBuuuu!!! ❤️

Oh I love that you highlighted Kim Hoo Hun. He did do a great job in all those roles. I mightily agree ❤️

“Perhaps he has had problems with public transportation”😂😂😂😂

Thank you so much for highlighting Kai in both her rolls in Silent and First Love. She was fantastic in both. I am so happy to see her getting a nod. Wish I had given her the limelight as well ☹️

Your special Angst section is PERFECT and hysterical at the same time!!!! 😂 LOVE IT so much.

We did share some crossovers! YAY! Call it Love pulled me out of my Sci Fi/Fantasy Hole and happy it did. I see it snagged you as well.

Thanks so much, @JJ! Especially for being patient with me re “Love Like the Galaxy”, I was actually worried about how you’d take it when I was writing this part. I actually did like the show, just not to the extend that so many of you did.

Will have to check out that SUGA/LNY interview. She even did a little K-pop dance bit in One Day Off (💃).

Thanks also for joining me in a moment of silence for the Sadly Rejected (I had fun looking for photos of everyone looking particularly rejected). But especially for being such a bright presence here and on Patreon.

See you around! And happiest of holidays, however you celebrate.

I’m glad that the Existential Angst award seems to have struck a chord! It was a last minute addition, held up by my desire to find all of those headshots. In the end I was unnecessarily pleased with myself for finding picture of most of them looking appropriately distraught….😢) And I will definitely agree that the score to LLTR was marvelous and appropriately epic.

Thanks so much for the links. Will check them out when I find another quiet moment.

Thanks again, JJ, for being here and keeping things positive! See you in the New Year!

Wonderful stuff, j3ffc. Hmmm, I can see a TED Talk by you on the horizon.

I laughed so hard at your comments re Tokyo Vampire Hotel, as I was pretty certain you were going to say what you did. I think I clocked out even sooner than you did!

I do think it’s time all such dramas move on from the first love trope. There are different ways it can be done, but the logic of entitlement some characters portray with such a connection does frustrate me at times.

Kim Joo-hun is terrific. You know you are in for a treat when he turns up, but sadly, I found Castaway Diva not one of these. He was terrific in Big Mouth, though and of course DrRK2 and 3.

LSK is terrific – she can sing and dance too. I’m looking forward to her next drama with Lee Dong Wook – The Good Man. Call It Love is a worthy award winner 🤩🤩🤩

With a 450% increase in your drama watch this year, will the increase be nil, straight line or linear in future 😉 Here’s to a wonderful 2024 viewing year for you 😎

THANKS for reading, Sean. You flatter me….

I will definitely seek out LSK singing and dancing (two activities I wish were more common in K-dramaland). She is indeed great (as is Nana, although that vampire show still gives me the creeps).

I can confirm that my drama watching will NOT increase exponentially again this year, but I do hope to, as Chicago put it, “maintain a steady high”.

Thanks for all of your comments and insights throughout the year. Looking forward to more on the flip flop. Happy holidays to ye.

Nana is killing it in My Man is Cupid, but the cast is just not strong enough around her and the story is really flat between the good bits. I would like to see her and LSK in a show together because they would take all before them.

Here you go re LSK – again she was superb in this show, but it was an awful drama:

See you on the flip side 😉
