My thoughts
Episode 17
E17. I realize that this is a show where my main hook is wanting to know what happens next.
With a lot of shows, my main hook tends to be affection for the characters, and wanting to root for them on their journey.
Not in this case. I find that my affection for the characters pales in comparison to my interest in knowing what happens next. I want to see how our writers keep taking the story forward, within the rules they’ve set for themselves within our story world.
And, I’m happy to say that, so far, I do feel like Show is delivering.
Of course, there’s still room for Show to crash and burn, but so far, anyway, I do feel like I’m in the camp of viewers who like this drama (versus the other camp which seems to think that this drama crashed and burned a long time ago).
Also, it helps that Show manages to keep surprising me, in ways that I don’t expect to be surprised.
For example, I’d expected Jang Gang’s reappearance to be quite splashy, this episode, but it’s actually the opposite.
Jang Gang’s meeting with Uk in Gaema Village leans on the pretty understated side of things, and Uk doesn’t even know that he’s met with his father, after the fact.
I hadn’t expected that, even though it still makes sense within our story world, because Jang Gang had left Daeho when Uk had been a baby.
I’m guessing that Jang Gang will continue to watch over things undercover, and make a splashier entrance sometime soon.
Meanwhile, I think I was right about Mu Deok being the one to trigger the doors of Jinyowon, rather than the blood worm in So-I.
Unfortunately, it seems like So-I’s clued in to this too, and is now set on getting rid of Mu Deok, for her own safety.
Hmm. I can understand that kind of thinking, but girl, you’re in greater danger than you think, and it has nothing to do with Mu Deok.
I guess I shouldn’t be at all surprised that Jin Mu and Shaman Choi never intended to keep So-I alive, even while they go through all that trouble to get her to pass for Bu Yeon.
From their point of view, it actually makes perfect sense, that Shaman Choi should move from the body of the Queen, to the body of the heir of Jinyowon. There’s a lot more room to wield magicky power from that seat, than the Queen’s throne, after all.
On the OTP side of things, we do get a little bit of teasing playfulness, when Uk comes upon Mu Deok looking into the mirror, after her visit to Jinyowon.
Uk’s such a cute deadpan dork. I kinda love the way he manages to make Mu Deok smile and laugh, even though she wasn’t in a smiling or laughing mood to begin with.
Also, I do love how affectionately matter-of-fact he is, when he remarks to Mu Deok that he’d used to think that only her eyes were pretty, but now he thinks that she’s just pretty no matter what. Aw. He is very sweet. 🥰
And even though Mu Deok doesn’t want to admit it, she’s definitely growing fonder of him by the day, judging from the way she flicks her gaze away from Uk, as if to catch herself.
I’m actually pretty surprised that Uk and Mu Deok share their conclusion – that the found Bu Yeon is really a fake, and is the swindler So-I – so readily with Yul and Dang Gu.
It makes me feel like things are going to move pretty fast on this front, if information is being passed along so readily.
But perhaps it’s not even that important that they share this information readily, since Madam Jin comes to her own conclusion soon enough, that the Bu Yeon who’s returned to her, isn’t quite the same as the Bu Yeon whom she’d lost.
I guess it’s true that a mother knows her child.
Which, of course, begs the question of why it hasn’t occurred to Madam Jin that Mu Deok might be her long-lost Bu Yeon, particularly since Madam Jin’s got a fair amount of magical power.
I rationalize that most likely it’s because the magic that’s enabling Naksu to take over Mu Deok’s body, is perhaps blocking Bu Yeon’s aura / energy from view?
And, just as Uk analyzes, Jin Mu’s got a bigger hostage in his hands – the ice stone – which is why it doesn’t even matter so much, that Madam Jin realizes that Bu Yeon really isn’t Bu Yeon.
I actually like that Uk’s able to figure out exactly what’s going on, with Madam Jin calling for the Unanimous Assembly; that the plan is for Shaman Choi to move from the Queen’s body to So-I’s body.
PLUS. Importantly, I like that he actually tells the Crown Prince what he knows, and gets Princey involved too.
Again, this makes it feel like Stuff is going to happen soon.
The big ol’ fight that happens at the Unanimous Assembly is kind of silly, but completely within the Hong sisters’ classic style, so I’m not too fussed, and even feel mildly amused by it.
What I wasn’t expecting, like, at all, was the King’s request, that they see the power of the ice stone to raise the dead – and his singling out of Mu Deok, to be the test subject.
Ack. This feels very dangerous, particularly since Madam Jin’s agreed to get rid of Mu Deok for Fake Bu Yeon.
Will she muck up the bringing back to life part, just to fulfill that promise, I wonder?
I am SO nervous, as Madam Jin proceeds to kill Mu Deok.
With all that magical killing going on, it seems that as Naksu passes out from being strangled, Bu Yeon comes to the fore.
That single utterance of the word, “Mother,” as tears roll down Mu Deok’s face, is so full of pathos.
Surely Madam Jin will clue in now, that this is her long-lost Bu Yeon??
Episode 18
E18. Well. This worked out to be another really interesting episode. I sure hope Show manages to keep up this surprising quality, all the way to the end!
Madam Jin DOES manage to make the connection that Mu Deok is her long-lost Bu Yeon, but it seems like the way both fake and real Bu Yeons disappearing, along with the ice stone, is too much of a distraction, in that we don’t see her attempting to do anything about her realization, this episode.
I don’t know what So-I was trying to do, in batting the ice stone towards Mu Deok.. as in, she knows that the ice stone has the power to bring back Mu Deok from the dead, and she’s doing something to bring the ice stone closer to Mu Deok, instead of further away?
Or.. did she think, in a moment of foolishness, that she could destroy the ice stone, and prevent it from reviving Mu Deok – thus achieving Mu Deok’s death.
That makes more sense, and I could believe that in that moment of panic, she probably didn’t realize that she was batting the ice stone closer to Mu Deok, which would likely be counter-productive to her desire to kill Mu Deok.
I’m fascinated by the ensuing weather chaos, that then sucks So-I and Mu Deok into the midst of the ice stone, which then altogether surrounds Jeongjingak in a magical barrier of energy.
I definitely hadn’t seen THAT coming! 😅
And, what an interesting situation this creates, where all the typically powerful mages can’t use their spells or energy within the barrier, but soul-shifters like Mu Deok can.
I’m also intrigued by Bu Yeon’s words to Mu Deok, that the power will be more than she can handle, and she will have to bear the price of overflowing power, where earning one means losing another.
I hadn’t understood it when Bu Yeon had said it, but when Mu Deok analyzes the situation and concludes that her gaining that power, would mean sucking all the power out of the people within the barrier, thus killing them, it becomes clearer to understand.
And, given that the key people with whom Mu Deok’s built emotional bonds are within the barrier, it makes sense that this would cause her to hesitate the way she does.
I’m actually glad that she does hesitate, because that reinforces that the relationships she’s built with people like Yul and Uk are real, and not merely transactional, like she’s been telling herself.
She can’t actually bring herself to kill Yul or Uk, or allow them to die by any other means, in order to use the ice stone’s power to shift her soul into another body.
This is also why she keeps putting off taking any action about it, whether it’s telling Uk the truth about regaining her powers, or actually using that power to shift souls.
It becomes a bit of a running gag, how she keeps making excuses all episode long, to stay as Mu Deok juuust a little longer, because of this reason or that.
I find it rather endearing and poignant, actually, because her reasons for making those excuses have everything to do the people she cares about, and keeping them alive.
It is pretty trippy, though, to see Mu Deok use her powers to do things like make tea. That feels like a new chapter, in a way, since the Mu Deok that we’ve spent the most time with, hasn’t had access to her powers.
I’m actually rather surprised that Show manages to make me feel rather sympathetic towards So-I, even though she’s literally trying to get Mu Deok killed.
Perhaps it’s as Yul and Uk say, during their conversation; that it’s because she’s being used by Jin Mu.
I also think it has something to do with the way Seo Hye Won is playing So-I; there’s a fragility about her, even as she works to navigate her way through this terrible maze in which she’s found herself, at Jin Mu’s mercy.
She might have bad intentions on some level, but she’s also terrified through pretty much the entire process, and I think that’s why I have some sympathy for her, despite her murderous intent.
Plus, she does try to save Yul, even though it means blowing her cover, so she’s not all bad.
Jang Gang’s splashy entrance still hasn’t happened yet, but I did get a small thrill out of Jang Gang returning to Cheonbugwan, and being mistaken for a random hobo, before he gets recognized as the Gwanju.
Now that he’s full of regrets for not destroying Jin Mu’s energy back in the day, I wonder if he’ll make that his new goal in the present?
As we close out our episode, it feels like everything comes to a head for Mu Deok, when she hears that Uk’s life is in danger, because he’s decided to lure the soul-shifter to the secret room.
It feels so significant, that she would go there to confront the soul-shifter, even though everyone else is convinced that no matter what happens between Uk and the soul-shifter, Uk’s already a dead man.
Again, it’s really trippy to see Mu Deok wield her power and her sword like Naksu had, at the beginning of our story, and it’s definitely satisfying to see her take out the soul-shifter without too much difficulty.
I have no idea how Uk had managed to lure the soul-shifter into the secret room without getting killed, but I’m VERY GLAD that he’s ok.
And then we have the moment of reckoning, where Mu Deok must choose whether to point her sword at Uk and kill him, or withdraw her sword and her intent to use it again, and allow Uk to live – and make her a new promise.
I’m not surprised that Mu Deok chooses Uk, but I’m still pumped to see her withdraw her sword and invite Uk to make her that new promise he’d talked about.
It’s a culmination of all of her growing feelings for Uk, and now, when it’s time to make the choice, she chooses Uk, in spite of everything that she’s been telling herself thus far.
Ahhhh! I feel so gratified on Uk’s behalf!!
And then we have kisses!! Actual, rather electrifying kisses, where I can feel the sparks coming through my screen. 🔥
Spazz. This is verrry excellent, and I’d like more of this, please. 🤩

I’m with you, KFG. I love dramas best when I get super-dooper invested in the characters to the point where I worry about them. This show (or at least, this first season) isn’t like that. I enjoy many of the characters in it, and do have soft spots particularly for the Crown Prince and Yul, but it’s the story pacing that is SOOOO hooky! It really is a master class on how to keep viewers guessing whilst never being confusing or silly or unbelievable (within the realms of the Alchemy of Souls world, of course).
Now I don’t care, la-la-la, but I barely felt a flicker with the kiss, however much I appreciated its coming! No, I won’t apologise! I really like Uk, and I think Mu Doek is quick-witted and interesting, but together they just don’t quite gel believably. It is a me problem, I can see from the comments. It is literally the only thing I miss about the show, a real connection between the leads that isn’t just spoken. I just do not FEEL it. I actually think there is more chemistry between Mu Doek and Yul – or rather, I feel how much she cares for him. The actress seems to choose to show Mu Doek’s feelings for Yul better, while keeping very closed around Uk. I need more leakage!
However, it doesn’t spoil my watch at all (not the first time, or this second time) because the show delivers pretty much everywhere else. I really am enjoying watching it again and like others have said, it’s such a treat to know we get to dive straight into the second season after!
The only plot point revealed in these two episodes I am a bit confused about is why Jin Mu and Shaman-Queen didn’t find a way to kill off the Queen so Shaman’s soul could enter So-i-as-Buyeon BEFORE delivering her to Madam Jin? She would have done a better job of fooling Madam Jin, no? And I imagine she would have been able to unlock the leafy magicky cupboard without the use of a worm…
@Ele
To your question, my understanding is that since the Queen is member of the Seo family (same family as Yul), there is a soul lantern for each member hanging at their fortress that stays lit until they die. Killing the Queen too early would have meant tipping off that the soul in her body was a shifter. I believe the plan was to kill the body of the Queen at the time Shaman Choi shifted to Sol-i’s body to create the cover for her lantern going out.
@Ele
What Nathan said above regarding the lantern.
Also I don’t think anyone other than the women of Jinyowon can open that door, worm or not. It was just serendipity that Mu-Deok was there at that exact moment to make it seem so.
Though, I am still not sure how Madam Jin is the head of Jinyowon, when she is unable to realize So-I is not even a mage, much less her all-seeing-daughter.
Yes, I get the soul lantern “problem”, I just figured they could have staged the Queen dying (eg Shaman soul switching into So-i) before Jin Mu delivers So-i to Madam Jin. Why wait until after? The performance of the ice stone set up didn’t strictly need So-i to already be planted in the family?
Anyway, I agree that it’s odd Madam Jin doesn’t seem very magicky – but the daughter doesn’t either. Maybe the Jin family are just good at handling the magic artefacts but aren’t mages in the way the others are? I guess the only reason Buyeon had powers is because she was resurrected by the ice stone as a baby. Poor So-i. She might have had the awful suffering of the worm thing and then if Mu Doek hadn’t been there, it wouldn’t have helped open the leafy door.
what stirring, epic, heart wobbly stuff.
1) i love Mu Deok and Crown Prince and Seol Yul. both pairings were touching. but can anything touch the love-to-the-death, i’ll-die-for-you, i-have-actually-died-for-you love between Jang Uk and Mu Deok? that kiss was wayyy overdue but also soooo satisfying because of that extremely slow burn (not to say i didn’t enjoy the slow burn, i did). And the OST perfectly applied for their kiss. i drowned with them too.
2) as My? said, Jang Gang – you wife didn’t have an affair, she thought she was sleeping with YOU!!! stop blaming her!
3) the part where Mu Deok imagines taking over the bodies of King, Park Jin and Jin Mu – and making them dance – was so funny!!! i loved it
how are we ending part 1 already?! i have loved the entire journey. so glad we have part 2 coming right up. also, how have i been sleeping on this show for forever? so glad this group watch was for AoS if not i wouldn’t have started and what a shame that would be!!
@My and @MC: Yes, I agree that Jang Gang has no redeeming factor but here he is answering Uk’s question, “Do you know my dad Jang Gang” and he is describing Jang Gang as a madman whose cheating wife dies, who abandons his son and runs away – exactly what everyone on Daeho says which is why Uk responds that that is the first time someone has said it to his face.
Jang Gang’s true feelings for Do-Hwa is reflected towards the end when he says she is the biggest victim in all of this. I believe he is genuinely remorseful for what Do-Hwa went through and especially the way she is talked about post-death ( not that it absolves him of his shite behaviour)
I REALLY disliked it too, that he said his wife had an affair. It’s so ridiculous!!! That poor, poor woman.
Maybeee Du-ah, realizing she was married to a fool, really did have an affair! And Jang-bang was so devastated by the discovery, he agreed to temporarily switch souls with the king. SO: Uk is actually the son of Gandalf-the Great which explains why he’s so powerful!
I agree with all of you- how are we at the last two episodes??
this is my “official” 6th watch and the fact that I still sat mesmerized every wknd proves what a wonderful story this truly is and how beautifully it was shot.
not gonna lie, i got misty eyed watching the CP ask for something grander and confessing how hard he is trying to hold back from using his Royal clout and making MuDeok his – nicely done by him and by Mu Deok.
and then when Yul gets scolded by her for not able to light a brazier, the way his eyes light up at Mu Deok remembering his leg pain and pollen snacks – sigh! My eyes definitely sweat a lot this episode.
and that kiss 😍😍😍
I would like to join the Jung So Min fan club as well.
and i definitely loved S2 and Go Youn-Jung but boy! I doubt Mu Deok could have been played by anyone else like she did!
@Kumari, I think it is another positive attribute of the CP that he actually seems to understand that you can’t make someone love you if they don’t…..
@j33fc: While Yul still has puppy eyes when he interacts with Mu-Deok and he seems to come from a place of wanting to protect Naksu, CP’s eyes has a mix of yearning and hurt n anger – very very nicely done.
You guys, I LOVE JUNG SO-MIN AS MU-DEOK/NAKSU SO MUCH!
@Haniczka
As much as I love the other actors, for me this show is so good in large part because of Jung So-min. I am one of those who actually appreciates Go Youn-jung in Part 2 but JSM is the true star.
@Nathan, at least this time, I know and respect Go Youn-Jung, and I won’t be caught completely off guard. I’m trying to keep an open mind.
@Haniczka, right on, right on, right on. Like you, I am looking forward to giving a second consideration to GYJ in part 2, but if there’s a Jung So-min fan club, I wanna join.
Jung So Min is incredible!
@Haniczka – yes, I agree! I first watched AoS a couple of months into my drama-watching journey so it was my first exposure to Jung So Min. I’ve loved her ever since and will pretty much watch anything she is in, even if it’s a bit less than stellar (Would You Marry Me?).
@Deb, has JSM done anything else where she’s a watchable as she is here? I gots to know.
@j3ffc – I liked her a lot in Because This Is My First Life. It’s one of my favorite dramas. I haven’t yet watched The Smile Has Left Your Eyes (not up for the angst) but KFG rates the drama a B. Also haven’t gotten to My Roommate is a Gumiho (KFG B+++) but it’s on my short list.
Thanks, @Deb! I’ve not seen First Life, but that’s one strong recommendation! I did see Gumiho, which I quite enjoyed, but didn’t even realize JSM was in it until you mentioned it. I looked it up and she’s got a very small role. Plus I’d forgotten she was the lead in Playful Kiss, all the way back in 2010 (which I’ve also never seen).
@j3ffc – I haven’t seen Playful Kiss either. I don’t know why she doesn’t get more roles as the lead, although she has done Love Next Door and Would You Marry Me? in the last few years. Love Next Door was a big disappointment for me…started out well and then became a family drama instead of a romcom.
Also, I think I’m losing my ability to keep track of dramas, LOL. I HAVE seen My Roommate is a Gumiho. Yes, her role is short lived but she does a great job.
@j3ffc: Agree with @Deb, “Because this is my first life” is a beautifully done drama. Jung So Min was wonderful as was the male lead, whose name I cannot recollect now. ( He was wonderful in My Liberation Notes as well)
Her role in Gumiho was a small one. My Roommate is a Gumiho is a Hye-ri show through and through and the handsomeness of a certain Jang Gang.
I definitely did not like Would you Marry me – both hers & Woo-shik’s comedic flair was wasted in that show. Love Next Door had so much potential but like Deb mentions, it turned too family-drama ish with a badly written mom character than the rom-com advertised. She was amazing in the emotional scenes tho.
I agree that the writing of “Love Next Door” was a bit of a let down, but I thought Jung So-min’s acting was top notch.
@j3ffc: handsomeness of Jang Ki-Yong. Kumari’s eyes can discern between the 2 handsome dudes but cannot find the letters on her keyboard 😀
So, by now, I’m figuring out that the relationship between Naksu and Bu-yeon is not like an ordinary soul-shift. Rather than booting the host soul out, it seems that Bu-yeon and Naksu (Choi-yeon) are sharing the body but Naksu is the dominant one (by choice of Bu-yeon?). All the way back to the inn where Naksu did the alchemy of souls, her choice was supposed to be the other maid, but I am guessing Bu-yeon intervened. How or why is still mysterious but if we want to invoke “fate” it seems that these two need to work together to overcome those who want to use the ice stone wrong.
I, too, was glad to see all the pretending stop and have Mu-deok and Uk finally get their moment of passion. It was a kiss long-coming….. 😍🤩
I’m definitely enjoying this rewatch. Even now, there are little details I didn’t pick up on before and it has been a time of (re)discovery. I used my recent business trip to jump ahead a bit but I’m following these notes diligently. Thanks again KFG! 😊
Nathan, I think that this relationship is both mysterious and fitting with the mythology of the story. I plan to re-watch the original ss maneuver by Naksu in E1.
And amen to thanking KFG for the gift of another group watch!
And so, j3ffc, there is my answer on how the soul shift with Gil-ju didn’t seem to work, I think Bu-yeon intervened again and stopped it. It was her that Jang Uk interacted with in the “soul sea” and put a stop to that nefarious plan.
@Nathan and @Kumari, ah yes, I kinda remembered but also kinda didn’t remember 😬. The show is already signaling Bu-yeon’s power, even if her skill set may not totally overlap with Naksu’s….
@Nathan: The more we learn about Bu-yeon’s powers it just becomes so much clear that she is truly in control, even in letting Naksu be in control. And yes, i think Bu-Yeon is truly around to save the world from the chaos and ice stong can cause. Show and writers have done a nice job of keeping how it will get done mysterious
Apart from loving Seo Yul and the Crown Prince, as well as of course Mu Deok and Uk, there is another character that really makes my heart beat. But from annoyance. Again, I am going to rant about Jang Kang. Okay, he had his problems and obviously has tried to atone for them. But the gall of him to say that his wife was having an affair! That is just so rude and false and beyond common decency. It wasn’t as she willingly went to bed with the king- she thought it was her husband!
So. Very. Annoying. Not dad of the year. Not husband of the year.
He really makes my blood boil!
Apart from that it was a great watch!
So Naksu’s back and you’re gonna be in trouble
(Hey-la-day-la Naksu’s back)
You see her comin’ better cut out on the double
(Hey-la-day-la Naksu’s back)
You been thinking you was gonna mess with Jang Uk
(Hey-la-day-la Naksu’s back)
So look out now ’cause she’s comin’ after you
…With apologies to The Angels
The OST when Uk and Mu Deok were flirting in the marketplace was charmingly old fashioned. A new flavor added to the palette of sound in this show.
I found it hilarious that everyone was supposed to have read “Words of the Heart” but not a single person could remember what it actually said (much less knew what it actually meant).
Wait – I am confused. How did Gang-gu and Cho-yeon come to blame the bloodshed at that inn on So-I? Was she the consensus culprit? If so, I missed it.
I really felt for the Crown Prince in this show. He is really starting to wear his heart on his sleeve. “Just the right amount….” must’ve truly hurt.
Mu Deok to Seo Yul: “Are you a moron?” 😂 And the ensuing conversation shows just how clearly each knows everything about their shared past without acknowledging it out loud.
The empathy of Mu Deok coming front and center: she is truly a part of Naksu now. “One last time…” for everything and even her appreciate of the CP.
Next time someone calls me a genius I will simply just nod like Uk did. Oh, wait….never mind.
Those mages-in-training with the grey gowns oughta just trade ‘em in for fitted red shirts with Star Fleet badges on them. I mean, seriously.
I’ve gotta admit that when Mu Deok pulled out a can of Naksu on that ss-AH it was deeply, deeply satisfying.
How can it be the last two shows of Part 1 already? This has really flown by, in no small part thanks to the company here.
I guess Words of the Heart is like those classics that everyone pretend that they have read, but either never actually read, never finished or totally forgot. Or maybe they read but didn’t really understand?
And yes, time has really flown by. Feels like a couple of weeks since we started the group watch, but that was actually nine weeks ago! The I had snow, now I almost have leaves on the trees. And pollen. Too much pollen. Those pollen treats they sometimes talk about in sageuks sound not very appetising. …
I hear you, @My. I hate pollen more than noble idiocy.
Hahaha, love the song parody @j3ffc.
i finally bought all the ingredients to make yagwa for the finale of S1. Will let you know if it turns out any good.
@Kumari, mmmmmm-good! I am sure they’ll turn out better than my galbi fail this weekend….
@j3ffc, I agree. I suddenly got a worse pollen allergy than before this year. Annoying when you live close to the woods and love the outdoors.
Also, I love how Uk is the only one who truly understands the “Words of the Heart” and is using it to guide his relationship with Mu-deok. That’s something I completely missed last time.
Love the reference to the Star Trek red-shirts, I got immediately and killed myself 🤣🤣
@j3ffc, that song is now firmly planted in my brain. 😄
I thought Yul told Gang-gu and Cho-yeon his suspicions regarding So-l. Then their little group realized her involvement in the killings and preparations for fake Bu-yeon’s debut. But I could be wrong. I’m almost tempted to go back and watch again to see if it was after Yul examined the bodies?
@Haniczka, that does sound right.
I also want to second KFG’s comments about So-I and her portrayal by Seo Hye Won – nicely nuanced character and very well written.
