Hey everyone!
Like what we did for the past couple of years, we’re having guest posts from the lovely folks on Patreon, to help us take stock of our drama years, yay! 🥳
We’ll be seeing about 2 guest posts per week, and this will unfold into January 2023, and that’s perfectly ok.
My annual year-in-review, which usually comes out in December, will also come out in January (or thereabouts 😅), after all the guest posts have been published.
If you missed our earlier posts, you can check them out as follows: Ele, Natalia, JJ.
Today, I’m pleased to announce that Sean is sharing his drama year.
The more I get to know Sean, the more amazed I am, at how Sean is a man of many – many! – interests and talents.
It’s so cool that dramas is one of his interests, because he applies his wide-ranging interests, and meshes it with his out-of-this-world ability to bend time and space, to all of his drama-watching.
You’ll see that the result is quite astounding, in terms of the number and scope of dramas he’s watched.
Which means that more than likely, he’ll mention a drama (or five) that you might’ve never heard of otherwise. 😁
Sean also writes about management and leadership on his own blog, which you can visit here.
I hope you guys enjoy!

A Little Bit About Me

I started my Kdrama journey in 2016, when I was the CEO at the Shire of Sandstone, in the outback of Western Australia (Desert country), 650 kms from home (or 750 kms, depending on which road you travel).
Sandstone is prime gold country and I spent many a Friday night at the local pub, where the local prospectors would show me their finds for the day.
Yep, they would casually lay down on the bar anywhere between $30,000 and $100,000 worth of gold nuggets for me to look at. But I never, ever touched them, even when they say it was okay to do so.
Sandstone is beautiful country. Despite its isolation, I always found someone to talk to. The stars at night there are amazing. The Milky Way is a full on tapestry.
On my nightly walk, I would need to sometimes dodge kangaroos or racehorse goannas (yes, both species can get a bit feisty).
One Sunday morning I’m slaving away at the office. I would normally work from 5:00 am until about 11:00am and then drop in at the markets on the way home.
Anyway, I felt someone watching me. I turned around to see a group of Japanese tourists who had stopped by to look at the gardens surrounding the Shire office. I guess they were curious regarding what I was up to. I gave them a gentle wave and then discreetly lowered the blind.
Then, one night, as I was going through Netflix, I thought I would take a look at a Kdrama.
That experience then led me to start a search for reviews on other Kdramas and the rest is, as they say, history. This led me to meeting kfangurl and of course the gang on The Verdict and Patreon.
What A Year It’s Been
I have found 2023 to be one cracking of a drama year.
I have watched way, way too many dramas. Not all of them completed of course.
I did have thoughts of writing a post by country, but in the end the simplest way was to put it all out there.
So, what did my watch look like for 2023? Broadly, my statistics across all drama types and formats ended up being:
| Completed: | 63 |
| Dropped: | 52 (Some of these I almost completed, including with one episode to go) |
| Oh hold: | 05 |
| Past Years: | 01 |
| Currently Watching: | 12 |
Initially, I thought Kdramas would start out strongly in the new year. However, I found Cdramas and Jdoramas dominated my watch instead.
It wasn’t until the last quarter of this year when Kdramas roared back into contention, popping up like a game of whack-a-mole. And haven’t we had some good ones!
In the end, my breakdown of dramas watched by country turned out to be: South Korea 41%, China 48%, Japan 7%, Taiwan 4%.
I haven’t watched any Thai or HK dramas this year, but I have come very close.
Best Picks by Genre
Because I got to look at so many dramas this year, I thought I would mention some of my best picks by Genre or category. They are:
Romance
Hands down for me Call It Love was the stand out modern day romantic drama. The best historical romance was My Dearest (Parts 1 and 2). If you want to know more, see my Top 10 regarding both shows for 2023 below.
However, where would we be without the very fine Cdrama: When I Fly Towards You. Both Zhou Yi Ran and Zhang Miao Yi were an absolute delight.
Then there was Nothing But You with Leo Wu (Wu Lei) and Zhou Yu Tong. The show turned out to be an intelligent discourse on how to address age gaps in relationships.
Rom/Com
I really enjoyed Bo Ra! Deborah or True to Love.
It was a brave choice by Yoo In Na to do this show, but only she could have pulled it off! She is wonderful as the hidden, serious, but ditzy Bo Ra. Who hasn’t had those moments when it all goes wrong and then there is one disaster after another!
Family/Life/Legal
There are a range of stand out shows in this category:
- Meet Yourself. Here was a show where I would hang out for the latest daily release. I just loved everything about it taking an idyllic countrified lifestyle for our leads to meet themselves. Take a peek at my Top 10 for 2023 to see some further comments;
- Divorce Attorney Shin. This show in the end, did quite well. Cho Seung Woo (if you haven’t seen Stranger 1 and 2, you must) was once again awesome. Han Hye Jin was very good as was Kang Mal Geum along with Kim Sung Kyun;
- Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san. Kfangurl gave a wonderful review on this show, and it is just that wonderful. This show is in my Top 10, so you can read a bit more about it there;
- Ishiko to Haneo: Sonna Koto de Uttaemasu. Although from 2022, this Japanese legal drama is superb and the cases are absorbing, especially the one I refer to as the Casablanca Couple – neighbours who loved each other’s company, then who had a falling out through no real fault of their own. I watched this drama in two sittings 😊
I liked Family: The Unbreakable Bond but Jang Hyuk and Jang Na Ra couldn’t pull off what was a very brave experiment in family dynamics against an interesting backdrop of both leads being assassins.
Politics
This category belongs to Wave Makers, a very fine Taiwanese production. Some of my favourite actors are in this production – Hsieh Ying Shiuan (The making of an Ordinary Woman) and Aviis Zhong (Iron Ladies).
This production explored what it takes to pull a presidential election campaign together set against a backdrop of changing values in Taiwan.
In short, there were some very brave themes going on here.
A close second is the Kdrama production: Queenmaker. This show was only 11 episodes in all, but Kim Hee Ae and Moon So Ri absolutely rocked it.
What we have is a powerful fixer who uses her skills to transform a civil rights lawyer into the next Mayor of Seoul.
Both actresses are firm favourites of mine and I am looking forward to what they are in next: The Whirlwind and Hellbound Season 2, respectively.
Spy/Thriller/Mystery
Some of the best shows in this category are:
- Payback: Money and Power. I enjoyed how clever this Kdrama was. Lee Sun Kyun (Mr Tonsils) was excellent as the CEO playing the revenge long game over many years;
- Mr & Mrs Chen, a Cdrama set in about 1938 Shanghai and depicted events quite accurately, and what an excellent, rollicking spy thriller it was. This is another one fo may Top 10 shows for 2023;
- The Kidnapping Day. This was a very good thriller, with a wonderful performance by Yuna. She is only 12, but a standout actress in everything she has undertaken so far. Yoon Kye Sang as the bumbling protagonist was almost unrecognisable. Kim Shin Rok was turning in a fine performance, but I have to agree with Beez, the choice in costuming for her was disastrous!!!;
- Then we have Anna. What a performance by Suzy (who was just as awesome in Doona). Do you need to watch the extended version I hear you ask. The answer is no.
Business
Without doubt, this category belongs to Agency a 10/10 Kdrama, and yes, it’s in My Top 10.
Other good business dramas included Lady’s Character a Cdrama that plotted the trials and tribulations regarding the impact of relationships in a business setting.
Then there was Alliance, another Cdrama that could have been great. The female leads were fantastic as they got together to bring down scumbagosaurus (treachorous ex-husband and boyfriend to all three female leads).
There was also Turn on the Right Way to Life, which for the most part was very good, but lost its way in the last 12 episodes as too much needed to be resolved – but it was a fine commentary on an executive who represents the sandwich generation and the impact this has on someone who just spread himself too thin trying to support everyone and keep them happy.
Culture/History
The stand out show in this category was Hi Producer and it is also in my Top 10 for 2023. So, please scroll down further to see my comments there.
Of course, Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san can also be included in this category too as it gave a wonderful depiction of what it takes to run a geisha household.
Then we have Song of the Bandits. The show was beautifully made and written. In short, a classic western reminiscent of High Plains Drifter. It has been another good year for Kim Nam Gil.
Medical
I watched so many medical dramas this year, including a number of very good ones including:
- Romantic Doctor Season 3. How good was this show. It’s the favourite season out of the three so far for me and the third Lee Sung Kyung drama I watched this year;
- Fantastic Doctors. This show is a very faithful remake by the Chinese of the Kdrama: Good Doctor, unlike the American version. Also, at least ten other countires are now making their own version of this show;
- Daily Dose of Sunshine. A wonderful and powerful show with superb writing that portrays mental health as it is.
Spooky Horror
Hands down, this category is dominated by the Kdrama Revenant, and is another show that made my Top 10 for 2023. Kim Tae Ri was sensational. She gave the ghost from The Ring a real run for its money. And what about her hair. Wasn’t it phenomenal!
I enjoyed Island Part 2 – it was a fabulous send up of the horror genre. Could Lee Da Hee’s (aka Scarlett) eyes get any bigger! Of course, Kim Nam Gil was superb at sorting the Jeju monsters out.
Sci-Fi and Time Travel
There were a number of good sci-fi productions this year:
- Parallel World. This is a Cdrama that also made my Top 10. It has great mythology and world building mainly set within the Yumen Pass;
- Black Knight. I liked this Kdrama well enough, even though it was short. It was a fabulous concept but could have done with a bit more oomph;
- The Three Body Problem. This story is one of the great science fiction stories. Not only did Cdramaland make a version of it this year, but Netflix has a production coming out soon as well. I guess I will be making a comparison. Perhaps phl1rxd might be too.
And no, I haven’t watched Moving (I wasn’t a fan of Heroes, but my family loved it) nor Twinkling Watermelon or A Time Called You.
Then there is Sweet Home Season 2 which was very disappointing. The awesome sauce from Season 1 just wasn’t there.
Police/Military/Firefighting and Bodyguards
I found DP Season 2 to be disappointing compared to Season 1. I still gave it a good mark, but it just didn’t hit the high notes of Season 1. The shows to take a look at in this category are:
- Shadow Detective Season 2. The second season was better than the first and stars the incomparable Lee Sung Min. This was another Top 10 show for me;
- The First Responders Season 2. This is one of those shows that JJ found challenging. I know there was a lot of comment out there re what happened to one of the main male leads. However, it worked for me and Season 2 gives CIS a run for its money! There is some wonderful forescenic stuff going on.
Then there is the police Kdrama Not Others starring Jeon Hye Jin and Choi Soo Young a Mother/Daughter drama well worth a look. It’s very adult and at times very funny.
On another note, I started and dropped quite a few military and policing Cdramas this year.
Best Actor
I am pleased that I can this year, award this category to both a male and female actor. Hands down, they are:
Best Actor – Namkoong Min
Yet again, NKM delivers in My Dearest. He has become the most diversified of male actors. He has done it all now: comedian, CEO, huckster, romantic point of interest, action hero and historical heavyweight.
Best Actress – Ahn Eun Jin
What a delightful actress she is. Two big performances this year and she held her own against NKM in his ascendency. Both could do no wrong in My Dearest. Ahn Eun Jin also put in a wonderful performance in The Good Bad Mother.
The One True Pair
There are a number of contenders in this category and they are:
- Zhang Lu Rand and Su Zai Zai from When I Fly Towards You. What a great young couple they were. We had a level of maturity and depth that leaves many other much older and established couples in their wake;
- Zuo Shuang Tao and Chen Jia Ping from Mr & Mrs Chen. Guan Xiao Tong (Chen Jia Ping) is Cdrama royalty who has proved that she has what it takes to put in a superb performance and not rely on her famous mum and dad. Zuo Shuang Tao plays up to her beautifully. Such a deft hand at acting;
- Lee Jang Hyun (Namkoong Min) and Yoo Gil Chae (Ahn Eun Jin), were stellar in My Dearest. Don’t be fooled by those who said this story is a take on Gone with the Wind, because it’s not. Their relationship is simply breathtaking;
- Ye Liu Xi and Chang Dong in Parallel World. Ni Ni (Ye Liu Xi) absolutely smolders in this show and the menfolk need to have a fire extinguisher handy when watching it. Bai Yu plays the bewildered focus of Ni Ni’s attentions to perfection.
The OTP gong goes to Namkoong Min and Ahn Eun Jin. Both put in a superb performance in My Dearest and are a couple for the ages.
The Hidden Gem
As we say over here (well, we used to), you need to do yourself a favour and take a look at the fabulous Kdrama: The Matchmakers.
Cho Yi Hyun is an absolute delight as the Joseon matchmaker Jung Soon Deok. She is the widowed daughter-in-law of the Left State Councillor, so she leads a double life.
Rowoon plays Shim Jung Woo, a scholar who is the “Agent of Love.” He was married briefly to the former princess, who died on their wedding day.
Both characters come together to solve the very difficult wedding dilemmas, bringing couples together in the most enjoyable way. You are not going to find a better pairing anywhere. So, they can be added to the OTP list.
Also, if I was to put this show into my Top 10 for 2023, I would have to put it down at 4.5.
The Best OST
Without doubt for me, the best sound track this year belonged to Castaway Diva. Here is the delightful Eun Bin singing Someday (Beyond the Park):
The Razzies (or Supertankers)
Was there a show that really, really disappointed this year? Unfortunately, there are a number of contenders this year, and some of them started out so well:
1. Apple of My Eye. This was a daily Kdrama of some 121 episodes. We have a doting father whose wife left him and their daughter a long time ago. I dropped it with ten episodes to go;
2. Castaway Diva. Sadly, show didn’t go in the direction I would have liked. The female leads were terrific. The music was awesome. I dropped it at the hallfway point;
3. Crash Course in Romance. Now, this was frustrating because I really like the leads and their characters. This Kdrama just run out of puff for me;
4. Prosecution Elite. A legal Cdrama starring Dilraba. Can she do no wrong? Sadly, yes. Even I snoozed through it.
5. Royal Rumours. I liked the gentle comedic approach of this Cdrama for the first 12 episodes. It’s a shame because Jeremy Tsui is a favourite of mine and I found it all meh. The theme song is terrific though.
6. The Real Has Come is a 50-episode Kdrama weekender. So, a show that is onscreen for the best part of six months. It started off so well, a fine commentary on single mums, the challenges of pregnancy and the stigma of senior’s education, only to nose dive into a ground hog day type existence between the leads re their contract marriage;
7. Sweet Home Season 2. I found this show so disappointing, I canned it early on. After the first episode in fact.
8. Pandora: Beneath the Paradise. This Kdrama could have been a ripper of a show. The leads were terrific, but I was really disappointed with the big reveal early on. Not original at all.
9. The Longest Promise. What can I say. My wife asked me about this show again the other day, because she was enjoying it. I said I dropped it with eight episodes to go as it was going round and round. Up until that point, it was quite good. I don’t think I gave the right answer, though.
10. Copycat Killer. A good Taiwanese thriller until the eighth episode. I couldn’t be bothered with the last two episodes, because like Pandora, the big reveal undermined the story for me.
And the winner is (I’m not sure if that’s the best way of describing the outcome here) that not only hit an iceberg, but nose dived into some sort of makjang family vortex: The Real Has Come.
The Show That Should Have Done Better Than It Did
Well, here’s looking at you King the Land. Need I say more! We have two fine actors who were given a script that really needed much more depth. Yes, it was pretty to look at, but I felt in the end it was like opening a door only to find a blank wall behind it.
The Most Valuable Player
The MVP award goes to the Ocean/Valley Guardian, a rooster who is the saviour of the day in the very good Chinese sci-fi production Parallel World.
Chickens and roosters often pop up in many shows and in fact this year have appeared in Live Your Own Life (a very good, classic weekend Kdrama) and The Story of Park’s Contract Marriage. Speaking of the latter, Sa Wol I think is a very worthy contender for the MVP title. Not only is she Yeon Woo’s maid and friend, but the handler of rampant chickens.
The Best Villain
Hands down for me this goes to Park So Hyun in The Matchmakers. I found I couldn’t help but like her.
Played by Park Ji Young, who has been in all types of Kdramas – a tour de force performance. You might remember her as Head Court Lady Jo in The Red Sleeve.
The Most Over Used Trope IN 2023…
Hands down, the most over used trope for this year is the drowning trope. I couldn’t tell you how many times I saw this in a production I watched this year.
Perhaps the one time I enjoyed it most though was in The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract. LSY popping up in the hotel pool from the past was comedy gold.
Then there is the falling blossom from the cherry trees, but to be honest, I always enjoy watching the raining petals.
The shows that have done this trope a bit different in 2023 are My Man is Cupid and Welcome to Samdal-ri. In the former, to have good luck in love, you need to catch the petal on your finger. In the latter, Sam Dal steals the petal from Yong Pil.
Best Short Series/Web Drama
Both Kdramaland and Cdramaland produce short dramas, that are often web based. They can be as short as 2 or 5 minutes through to 15 minutes or so.
This year’s award goes to the Cdrama short: A Familiar Stranger. There were 18 episodes at 10 minutes each. It is a face swapping costume drama and done exceedingly well. In fact on MDL it had nearly 7,000 watchers and 3,500 users that gave it a rating of 8.4. I gave it 10/10.
PS: The Invincible (Evil) Stepmother may have given A Familiar Stranger a nudge, but it was still showing at the time of writing this post.
Best Opening Credits
The best opening credits belong to The Story of Park’s Marriage Contract. So many details are covered off in the cartoon inspired embroidered tapestry. It’s beautiful and every part of the tapestry has relevance and meaning regarding the show.
Best Movie
I watched a number of movies this year. My favourite was the SK sci-fi robot juggernaut: Jung_E. Kim Hyun Joo was fantastic as the warrior mother android.
Jackie Chan also made a worthy comeback to form in the Chinese movie Hidden Strike. It’s a good action adventure that sees a father reconnect with his daughter.
The Top Ten
As it stands, 2023 deserves a Top Ten. My list includes shows from South Korea, China and Japan. The finalists are:
10 Revenant
Revenant was a superb Kdrama on the supernatural. KTR picked another great show to be a part of.
This show had a fabulous cast all round, great music and marvelous, though sad tale that was beautifully told.
Of course, Park Ji Young was also in this production as San Young’s mother. I think Trent liked this one too.
9 Shadow Detective Season 2
I mentioned earlier that Lee Sung Min stars in this show. What a great actor he is. Also, his side kick Kyung Soo Jin played an awesome role in both series. It’s not always about the glitz and the glamour when it comes to the ladies.
This show deals with a seasoned homicide detective who has come out of retirement to help with a case. But of course, as soon as he starts making waves, he gets sent to the women’s issues unit. The ending was superb.
8 The Good Bad Mother
This show made me cry. Ra Mi Ran was superb as the mother to her injured son, Kang Ho, a no nonsense, but corrupt prosecutor with an iron heart (or was this all for show?).
I have already mentioned how wonderful Ahn Eun Jin was as the young mother of those fabulous twins. She was superb in pulling her life back together with Kang Ho.
As for the bad mother herself. What an amazing person and how she transformed those around her as she tried everything to make sure her son had a better life.
7 Hi Producer
The Cdrama Hi Producer is the one to watch regarding all things cultural in China.
Despite the quirky goings on of the FL producer – Yu Zai Zao (played by the delightful Zang Nan), the show embraces China’s cultural history through a compendium of stories that explores filming a master from Chinese opera, Chinese dancing, pottery, Hanfu making, painting, jewelry design and so on.
Then at the end of each story there is a real life interview with a national master on the subject just covered off in the drama.
6 Mr & Mrs Chen
Who would have thought that the Chinese would have produced a good old fashioned rollicking spy drama from the pre-communist era. Normally, they are very serious, very talkie, very preachy and also quite tragic.
Not so Mr and Mrs Chen. We have two top spies from opposing agencies who really want to be together and help each other out.
The various descriptions comment that this show is based on Mr and Mrs Smith, but I can categorically say it is 1000% better than the Brad Pitt and Angeline Jolie movie.
That being said, I am looking forward to the Canadian tv/streaming version of Mr & Mrs Smith in February 2024.
5 Call It Love
What a breath of fresh air this show was.
It had everything: disruption at a funeral, plans for revenge, a conscientious CEO betrayed by others, a scummy mummy (played ever so well by the delightful Nam Ki Ae), a father figure that likes camping and a couple who once they find each other’s orbit begin a journey of delightful self discovery.
4 Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san
If it wasn’t for the next three shows, the Makanai be my number one for the year. This is the type of show that the Japanese excel at.
It is beautiful, heart warming and shows off the best of human nature. Maiko means geisha apprentice.
We get to see the inner workings of a Maiko house and how two friends end up there. One becomes an apprentice, the other the cook. The joy that Kiyo as the young, bright and cheery cook brings to those around her is nothing short of delightful.
3 Agency
I wrote about Agency in my post back in June this year on CEO’s in Kdramas.
Here we have the most amazing executive who is, shock, horror, gasp – a woman. In fact, Go Ah In (Lee Bo Young) is so good at her job, she is undermined at every turn by her immediate boss.
So, what we see is the battle for the top job waged between these two executives. Their war is beyond a fight to the death.
Ah In learns to be a team player and lead her team. Her boss on the otherhand continues to abuse those around him and grovels before the higher ups, expecting the same grovel-like behaviour from those below him and alongside him.
Meanwhile, the actual CEO, thinking about retirement, has been treading water for the last ten years, totally powerless, a lame duck. However, as events unfold, he takes on a Yoda type disposition and eventually does what a CEO should do 😉
2 Meet Yourself
This show early in the New Year hit my screen when trawling through YouTube. Like my number one pick, I couldn’t wait for the next episode of this show to come out.
Crystal Liu was fabulous and Li Xian did a great job too. It’s true what one reviewer said about this drama: it will make you cry, it will teach you about life, it will give you hope and it will give you happiness.
Wasn’t Granny Xie marvelous too! Perhaps she should be on the MVP list as well.
This is one of those dramas where the romance develops naturally. Just by being in each other’s orbit sees our OTP grow close through the experiences they share in Zhi Yao’s hometown, which at the same time is trying to find a future for itself.
I have worked with and developed many rural communities over a long period of time and what we see in Meet Yourself is typical of every hamlet, village, town and city in rural areas throughout the world.
There is declining population, people move away to find better jobs, those that stay behind try to be innovative, then there are those who don’t want change or improvements for the better, services are reduced.
However, if they get it right there are those who will invest in these local communities, whether its tourism, art, culture, remote working and so on.
All in all, a delightful show and I enjoyed the music too.
1 My Dearest (Parts 1 and 2)
My Dearest is my number one pick for 2023, but there isn’t a lot in it. In fact, not even a fingernail between this Joseon heroic tale and the modern day Meet Yourself.
Where do I start with this 21 episode fable regarding Lee Jang Hyun and Yoo Gil Chae.
None of the descriptions out there do this show any justice. Not a moment was wasted. The OTP was sublime and the filming and production values were outstanding (which I know is something that phl1rxd would have appreciated.
Was Jang Hyun an anti-hero? Initially, this is how he was portrayed, but as we got to know him, we find out that he is a modern thinker at a time when Joseon took a retrograde step. His actions, words and deeds were quite heroic as the tale unfolds.
Then there is Yoo Gil Chae. Miss Popularity that has her eye on someone and can’t believe she doesn’t reel him in. As the story progresses, we get to see perhaps the most delightful transition ever of a character from a self centered individual to one who thinks of others.
When Lee Jang Hyun spots Gil Chae for the first time, he is literally stopped in his tracks. This is something of a running gag (there were others, but I don’t need to mention them here) between our OTP throughout the show.
Gil Chae would rib him each time they met about whether Jang Hyun thought she was beautiful and he would often react with a sarcastic remark.
My Dearest was very strong in addressing the cowardice and self destruction of the King and how he treated the Crown Prince and Princess.
Jang Hyun’s character was used as the barometer regarding the royals and the nobility. Although he was a noble himself (it would seem he purchased his title), he saw their role in society as a folly.
Gil Chae’s character as a Lady was the barometer regarding the treatment handed out to those captured or put into slavery and then later repatriated to Joseon.
One of the most delightful aspects of this show was how Jang Hyun and Gil Chae would find each other, time and time again. The show was a masterpiece in this regard. They either were reunited or they missed each other by a hair.
The ending kept the watchers very happy. If it had been any other outcome, there would have been a petition to the Blue House, I can guarantee it.
My Dearest achieved a nationwide rating of 12.9% in the final episode. It was the most watched drama on a Friday night.
The challenge for me now is how to fit this show into my Top 10 of all time.
The Final Word

So, there we have it. An overview of my viewing year including a range of shows that caught my eye.
I am not sure how I am going to tackle my drama watching in 2024. One thought I have had is to cut my watch right back to only those shows that kfangurl is following.
May all your drama viewing be enjoyable and interactions with the kfangurl family continue and thrive into 2024 and beyond. A very Merry Christmas to all!
~Sean

Thank you for this post, your humor comes through and I took some additional notes of shows to add to my watch list. Your description of where you are based out of – Western Australia – and the star filled night watches sounds magical too. I have to say, now I feel like I didn’t do 2023 right since I haven’t yet seen many of the well-rated shows your post mentions but I trust they are pre-vetted by you and many other champions of those series on this forum.
Sean! I am finally making time to read all the year-end posts.
As always, I am in awe of how organized you are when it comes to drama watching. I may not have been paying sufficient attention but this is the first time I notice that you actually drop quite a few shows over the year.
So many shows on your lists I have not (yet) watched :O
In SciFi genre, I watched Parallel Word (not yet finished) and Black Knight and also loved them both, the latter lacking a bit in substance but adequately making up for it in style.
I am surprised you did not finish part 2 of Sweet Home. While it lags far behind part 1, I agree, it did have worthwhile moments in my opinion. I think the addition of many new characters (most of whom I could not bring myself to care about at all) and the lack of screen time for Song Kang were my most obvious drawbacks.
I laughed loudly at your “opening a door to find a blank wall behind it” description of King The Land. I tried to watch this twice, making it to episode 2 and eventually even episode 3 and then dropping it. It felt so uninspired in both story and acting for me that I was wondering if there was something wrong with me when I saw how it generated such positive audience reactions overall. Your description so perfectly encapsulates my thoughts.
And then of course I share your love for Namkoong Min and Ahn Eun Jin and My Dearest. I read an interview with Ahn Eun Jin and how much she struggled with anxiety after the initial (negative) audience reaction to her casting and how much pressure she felt herself under throughout the show. I feel so bad for her because in my opinion, she was amazing and I cannot picture anyone else in that role. I hope she feels all the love people have expressed towards her acting since then, she really deserves it and then some! <3
What stellar acting, what a fantastic show. Rarely have I been this invested in a kdrama and so much in love with a show as this one. It also definitely made it into my top 10 of all time. This show deserves all the love!
Hello, Kate – I’m glad you finally had a chance to read my end of year post 😊
Yes, I do drop quite a few shows. It’s not that I want to, as I always hope the show I’m watching will be engaging and worthwhile. I found early on in my drama journey that if I did this re other shows, why not for kdramas and so on.
I tried Doctor Slump the other day and after one episode found it wasn’t me, which is disappointing because I really like Park Shin Hye. Then there is Amidst the Snowstorm of Love. I lasted three episodes. Not that it’s bad. It is well acted, the leads are great and it’s beautifully filmed. However, I found myself thinking that the leads have been in such great shows and played such fabulous roles, acting beyond their years, show felt quite flat to me.
I’m so glad you are watching Parallel World and you finished Black Knight.
Lol re King the Land. I guess at some point I kept hoping it would live up to what it promised. I can relate when you say – is there something wrong with me, because I have found some of the all time favourites to be a bit meh – Rooftop Prince for instance 😂🤣😂
As for My Dearest – yes, it is such a wow of a show and NKM and AEJ are forever etched in the Kdrama pantheon of memorable shows and performances. You are so right re Eun Jin, no one else could have played Kil Chae. It will be interesting to see how she goes with her next show with the Uncontrollably Fond couple reuniting. Then she will have an end of the world drama coming out 😊
Here is to a great 2024 drama year for you 😊🤩😊
Sean! A tour de force EOY post! As I think I told you, I watched My Dearest because you loved it so much that it could potentially be one of your all time favorites. It had to be good if you loved it that much. I loved it as well! So thanks for stopping me from waffling about watching it!
There are 3 of the Korean shows in your top 10 I haven’t seen. I’ll have to check those out too. Agency is another show on my list that I keep putting off watching. I don’t know why, but since you liked it so well, I’ll have to move it up to the top of the list.
I adored the first Shadow Detective but didn’t know about the 2nd one. I’ll definitely be hunting that up to watch, so thanks for the heads up.
Revenant looked a bit scary so I keep putting off watching that one. Maybe I can buck up my courage with your recommendation and go ahead and watch it already.
Thank you so much, lotusgirl 😊😊😊 I am so very glad you loved My Dearest. I think they well and truly raised the bar regarding kdramas in general.
I think you will be pleasantly surprised by Agency. It has a bit of everything. The acting is superb.
As for Shadow Detective, if there is a third season, I will be sitting in the front row!
Revenant is worth watching just to see Kim Tae Ri’s performance 🤩🤩🤩
EXCELLENT, Sean!!! Thanks so much for your analysis and insights!
Of course, since I agree that My Dearest is #1, that makes your review even sweeter! I admire your writing skills, as I am lacking in that area. Just curious: Have you read the book or watched the movie Gone with the Wind? If so, what do you think about the comparisons of part one to that novel?
I often find myself aligning with your reviews. Due to health issues, I was able to watch 81 dramas this year–an absolute record for me. I spent lots of time trying to establish a good base of classics, including the Kdrama Sandglass and lots of oldies in KFG’s A-list and iconic drama list.
Hoping all of your dramas are good dramas in 2024!
Forgot to mention that the sound track, especially the instrumentals, for My Dearest are outstanding. Using a pansori-style performance was a risky but fantastic creative choice for the music. In my opinion, the only comparable historical Kdrama sound track is The Red Sleeve. What are your thoughts?
I agree wholeheartedly that Ryang Eum’s pansori was an inspired and beautiful choice that lifted the soundtrack for My Dearest above many other soundtracks. Not only that, his performances were critical to a number of key plot points.
With The Red Sleeve we have this wonderful collection of orchestral pieces representing so many scenes throughout this beautifully told story, that I think totalled over three and a half hours. Each piece was beautifully matched to a key scene eg LSY enjoying the sunshine in the library. These pieces reminded me of snippets from Grieg and Tchaikovsky.
I’m struggling to find another soundtrack to rival how the music from the above two shows really added something to it, apart from the sound track to Bloody Heart. There are lots of shows with many good songs of course.
Interestingly, Jeong Nyeon, a drama about pansori is being made right now with a stellar cast. It’s set in the 1950s and has the same director from The Red Sleeve and the writer from A Time Before You.
It’s lovely to hear from you, Su San and thank you for your very supportive comments.
I was 16 when I read Gone With The Wind and have watched the movie a number of times as it is my wife’s favourite movie. We have various copies lying about the house. I enjoyed the book, but not the movie so much. However, the making of the movie and Vivian Leigh’s involvement with it is fascinating. I used to be a real movie buff once upon a time.
In terms of comparisons of My Dearest to Part 1 of the book, I think there are certain “echoes” regarding a number of plot points: being in love with the boy next door who, as it turns out, is going to marry her cousin and using various tricks to try and garner his attention to draw him away from his betrothed. Jang Hyun is a far cry from Rhett Butler (that’s a good thing). He, despite his business enterprises, actually cares for people. In terms of how both the stories unfold, we see Gil Chae grow into this amazing person. Scarlett remains forever self centred and delusional.
I’m so sorry to hear you have had health issues. However, you were able to watch an amazing number of dramas and get those all important classics under your belt. I think this is important, as it helps broaden an appreciation of where Kdramas are now and that some are digging back into the Kdrama past re certain plots, tropes and exaggerated mannerisms, which is reflected in some interesting domestic ratings. By that I mean, international audiences are scratching their heads re what is and isn’t doing well back at home. As much as I have welcomed the change re recent offerings, I still enjoy the daily and weekend family dramas that reflect the earlier Kdrama landscape.
I can see there are a number of very good dramas on the horizon. I have already kicked off 2024 with Marry My Husband and it has started so well. I think PMY’s determination to succeed with this drama is really shining through, after what has been a dreadful year for her 🤩🤩🤩
Thanks for your responses, Sean! And–I also love Surfin’ Santa.
I just finished binge-watching The Matchmakers, thanks for the recommendation. Fusion-sageuks create so many opportunities to poke fun at modern life in historical settings and this one does a great job! This drama was filled with lovable characters (call-out to Oh Bong, the butler and his Don Quixote-esque donkey) and entertaining plot lines. The ending was satisfactory after a brief period of concern that it would be tragic and was a great way to start the new year. Next up: Flowers in Sand and Park’s Marriage Contract.
I’m glad you got something out of the Matchmakers, Su San 😊 Yes, poor old Oh Bong – he was superb (and a far superior character to his role in Samdal-ri).
I hope you enjoy your next two watches. I haven’t started Flowers as yet, but I quite like Park’s Marriage Contract.
Sean – excellent EOY review. Thank you for all of your recommendations in 2023. I was appreciative for all of them as you really do have my number when it comes to drama watching.
I was also impressed with The Producers. The cultural aspects were fascinating.
Divorce Attorney Shin was so good and Cho Seung Woo was so good that there were times when I felt like I was sitting in that office with him. I am fond of those who march to the beat of a different drummer.
Three Body – yes, I will be comparing. It took so long for me to get through those three books I took it seriously as I had invested a great deal in the trilogy.
My Dearest was everything you said and more. I could tell that you loved it from your comments and I am glad I set time aside to complete it as it was so worthwhile. What a deeply moving drama. I have not enjoyed a sageuk like that in a long, long time.
I agree 100% with Royal Rumors. Even Jeremy could not get me to stick with it.
I am, with Lovely L on The Longest Promise – you can always change your answer 😅🤣😂😅🤣😂
MVP – laughing at this and I agree that Sa Wol is stealing a good portion of the drama. She is sharp as a tack and her comic timing is impeccable.
I also enjoy the opening credits from Park’s Marriage Contract. But I will do you one better with the opening credits from A Good Day to Be a Dog – and the little tune that plays along with it is a winner. I find myself humming that little tune during the day.
Sadly I may have to miss Shadow Detective and Call It Love due to available streaming sources. I may go to the dark side to see them.
Good Bad Mother – great drama, great acting and a good story. I wept through this at times.
And an Oscar goes to Surfing Santa….🎅🎅🎅🎅
Sean – lest I forget, I want to add Lee Chang Ho (the secretary to the rich business man Bread Song in Strong Girl Namsoon). This dude was seriously funny and completely stole the show even though he was only in about 5 scene. In fact, he is also the only thing I really remember from this drama.
@phl – he is quite the comedian from what I can see 😊
Thank you for such wonderful feedback, phl. Surfing Santa did very well at his first online outing regarding the December council meeting 😂
The great thing about Shadow Detective is how the veteran actors really steal the show. In Call It Love, there are so many very good performances and the settings were so real, it was hard not to get drawn.
I will look at the opening credits of A Good Day to be a Dog. Show didn’t appeal to re the whole turning into a dog after a kiss and I must say, it’s not too dissimilar to my thoughts re one of the Cupid brothers in My Man is Cupid, who turns into a dog on a regular basis. Give me a were beast anytime 🤣
The actress that plays Sa Wol, is fabulous in so many shows. She is returning to Attorney Woo 2.
I have a feeling I might be revisiting The Longest Promise 😁
@seankfletcher – A Good Day to be a Dog turned out to be more interesting than just turning into a dog after a kiss. Better to wait though for the full episode drop instead of watching as airing as I have been. They LOVE their cliffhangers, sigh. AND its only 1 episode a week. DOUBLE SIGH.
Let us know how goes revisiting The Longest Promise 😂
@JJ – I’m glad you’re enjoying A Good Day to be a Dog and I appreciate how one episode a week can undermine the flow of a show. It’s not for me though.
The Longest Promise might happen tomorrow 😉
Sean, I love the way you grouped your recommendations. Very helpful.
Darn, so sorry to hear the premise in Family: The Unbreakable Bond (Hulu) doesn’t fully succeed. Like you, I was hoping for more of the Jang Hyuk + Jang Na-ra magic from Fated To Love You. But since you said you liked Family, despite recognizing it doesn’t quite work, I guess I’ll still give it a try. If I could do that for The K-2, I can do it for anything!
Divorce Attorney Shin (Netflix) – so you’re saying it wasn’t always clear it would succeed, but by the end they pulled it off? It’s been on my “Maybe” list for months, but I couldn’t decide whether to try talk my wife into giving it a shot. We loved Cho Seung Woo in Stranger and thought this role might reprise that deadpan character, but with a little bit of humor thrown into the mix.
Queenmaker (Netflix) – thanks for this recommendation. We’ve watched the trailer multiple times but couldn’t get to “Yes.” Had I realized it was only 11 episodes long, we probably wouldn’t have jumped in sooner.
Payback: Money and Power (Amazon Prime Video) – wow, I don’t think I’ve even heard this one mentioned before. But with Lee Sun Kyun in the lead role, I must have, right? Done. It goes near the top of my list.
Agency (Netflix) was excellent. I’ve had a soft spot for Lee Bo-young ever since her hilarious turn as the slacker prosecutor in I Can Hear Your Voice. Whereas this is a far more serious role, which she nails.
Then, as you say, there’s the setup of how despite appearing at first to be a boss-from-hell, she grows to become a genius teambuilder. While also retaining her sometimes ill-considered impulse to “speak truth to power.” And how the show contrasts these two new-school attributes with the old-school tactics of her male nemesis, who only tells superiors or clients what he thinks they want to hear, and never allows his subordinates to become overly successful nor independent.
Cheers and thank you so much for your comments, Merij. I’m really glad you got something out of my list.
lol re the K2. Family is worth a try. Jang Hyuk and Jang Na-ra are always worth a look regardless of the show.
I really rate Divorce Attorney Shin. Cho Seung Woo is that good, you don’t realise it’s him. My notes say: “First ep was very good. Ep 2 was superb: court scenes were realistic, the backstory re piano, fiancée and family spot on. I liked the resolution of second case in Ep 4 re overbearing MIL. Also, the family issues around Shin and his young nephew are compelling re the family trying to keep them apart. A show that gave time to its characters and let them breathe! Second couple were fabulous.”
I hope you and your wife do get to enjoy Queenmaker the acting is superb and with Payback, it is downright clever. I really related to his Mongolian existence 😉
That’s a great commentary on Agency. You have put it so beautifully. I loved it every time her male nemesis got done over by her. Just superb.
Here is to great Christmas to you and your family and to some great shows next year 🎅🎄🎁
Meriji – do try Divorce Atty Shin. Cho Sueng Woo is quite good in this role.
@Merij – when you do watch Divorce Attorney Shin 😁, keep an eye out for the calendar on his office wall 😉
@Merij – sadly, Lee Sun Kyun passed away yesterday, so Payback would be his last ever drama.
….continuing on Ahn Eun-jin – I could sit through the first 3 episodes of S1 only because of her as NKM was not working on me yet. She was amazing in My Dearest and held her own against NKM and that says a lot about her innate talent. I also liked whatever little I saw of her in the Good Bad Mother. Also I think she is going to benefit much more from the My Dearest success. so thanks for the good words on her. And if possible I will give the Best Villian to the King in My Dearest. I mean he put an entire country/people/crown prince through such hardships and yet seemed to have no clue of anything at all. I am not even sure how he was ever chosen to be a King in first place.
Thank you for all of your very thoughtful comments, Princess Jasmine. I found the King interesting in My Dearest because I know CEOs in my industry who are exactly like that. I thought they did the demise of the Crown Princess and Princess very, very well without dwelling on it too much, otherwise it would have crushed the show, because you wanted to see them succeed. I think the King usurped his brother.
I would really like to see Namkoong Min and Park Eun Bin together again in a show, because they were brilliant in Hot Stove League. It would be interesting to see how they could take a show to even greater heights.
Ahn Eun Jin well and truly silenced those who were whinging re her casting in My Dearest. May she continue to silence them forever 🤩🤩🤩
I think we could put a celebration truck together, Korean style. I’m not sure how we would all fit in though 🤣
May you have a safe and Merry Christmas and I think we are in for some real drama treats in 2024 🎅🎄🧑🎄
And finally and most importantly – thank you – for rating and speaking so very highly of My Dearest. I am genuinely glad that I watched this drama this year during its live telecast itself. I used to spend my Sat/Sun afternoons waiting for the episodes to be available on the dark side with Eng subs here in SG – during the entire S2 runtime. S1 – I binge-watched it within a weekend. I don’t know about the “Blue House petition” but I was very serious about sending a protect truck to MBC if it was going to be sad ending. Also I must say that my recent South Korea trip was made even memorable because of this drama along with my in-house faves JCW and KNG.
Speaking of faves, Namkoong Min is fast becoming one of my other fave Korean actors along with Woo do-hwan and Lee Je-hoon. He was simply brilliant in My Dearest and it’s a shame that he is not being talked about more in the global drama watching community. The only thing I am not sure what he is going to do next – because as you rightly said he seems to have done it all by now. So fingers crossed and wishing him the very best. And on Ahn Eun-jin – TBH I could sit through the first 3 episodes
oops…I meant protest truck instead of protect truck.
Hello Sean,
Thanks for the post and I did read them completely. But I am going to write only on the most important ones and leave the rest for now as I am still on travel and it’s a bit crazy over here in Tokyo. Speaking of which, I absolutely loved Makanai and in fact as of today evening I am really thinking of just going to Kyoto for a day trip in the coming week as I wind up all my travel. The show was really lovely and awesome and I keep recommending it to my Buddhist friends because watching the show in itself was meditative and peaceful. So many thanks to KFG for writing about it (for those who don’t yet – KFG wrote an amazing review of it and included all details on geisha, the cultural aspects etc) and to you for rating it so highly in your list.
Now on Kim Nam Gil – thanks for the good words on SOTB and on him in general. I really enjoyed watching this drama as a whole and having KNG playing the lead was just about awesome. Speaking of which, in spite of my immense love for him, I really couldn’t sit through Island – both parts. In fact I watched Part 2 just for the joke of it all. Either our perspectives are different or I really missed something about Island. Because a lot of KNG fans seem to like that drama and even he spoke sympathetically about the character he played in that drama in the recent episode with Suga. So one of my to do action items for 2024 is to re-watch Island with a fresh pair of eyes.
Hello to you in Tokyo, Princess Jasmine and thank you for making your way through my post 😊 Makanai was such a special show. It was also reminiscent of a number of Japanese shows I have watched in a similar vein. Perhaps my favourite was Manpuku, which was the story of how Ramen was invented. It comes in at a 151 15 minute episodes, which is typical of morning shows in Japan.
That would be fantastic if you did have the opportunity to go to Kyoto and it would be great to hear all about it. We have started talking about a trip to Japan. It will be a little way off yet but we do have direct flights to there now.
With Island, it does need to be watched using a different lens. KNG is always awesome. I thought he portrayed the tortured soul he was in Island with a lot of credibility. His next drama re illegal gun trafficking looks interesting and of course The Fiery Priest 2 will happen sometime in the next year or two 🤩🤩🤩
Thanks Sean for the reply. I write in detail later but just quickly letting you know that I have been to Kyoto two times before and have spent quite a memorable time there 8 years ago. Maybe that could also be a reason why I liked Makanai as that brought back all my earlier Kyoto memories. We will definitely talk in detail on this in Patreon later.
For now – Wish you and family a very Happy and Joyful Christmas and have a great holiday over the coming week before the New Year kicks in.
i always wonder how you manage to watch so many shows!! and so many i’ve never heard of let alone watch! but you’re making me really want to watch Nothing But You, Meet Yourself and My Dearest. I actually tried a bit of My Dearest on the dark side as it’s not available legally but ended up with Moving, just because it’s available here. i loved Moving but My Dearest sounds so epic and incredible. I wish it can come here. Drama gods please get on it!
@MC – those three shows are really worth a watch. Hopefully, the drama gods do the right thing and My Dearest becomes available for you soon. It is epic and so many images are still very vivid in my mind’s eye.
In terms of the number of shows I watch, there is some method to my madness! I often get the opportunity to watch shows through the night this time of year as I need to be available to make decisions when fires break out across the district I have responsibility for. But failing that, I wake up very early and watch shows instead of what I used to do for many years and just start working.
@seankfletcher – I am back!!!! I had more to say which I forgot to say first time because there is so much to talk about you with your amazing EOY Review! Most of all how I WON!!!! 🤣 Sorry, I havnt worn the joke out yet 🤭🦄
I completely forgot to say Thank you for sharing your Drama Origin story in such detail! I am not sure we heard that before? Or if we did I forgot. So sorry. Memory Cells really like to take LOTS of unscheduled unapproved vacation time
What are racehorse goannas???? I know I can use google, but more fun to ask you 😬
And I LOVE you didnt touch the gold. WISE MAN.
What was your first Kdrama? I forgot 🥴
@JJ – I’m back in the New York groove 😆 Or, I’m baaack ✨
Thank you re my origin story. No need to say sorry. I have shared different versions of the origin story previously, possibly BEJJ (before JJ).
Racehorse Goannas or Bungarras (what we tend to call them) or Sand Monitor Lizards are rather large lizards — 4’6” (120cm) and 13lbs (6kgs). However, I have seen them much bigger and way heavier. It’s important not to spook them as they tend to run towards you at top speed thinking you are a tree they can climb to be safe.
My first Kdrama was Falling For Innocence. The leads were terrific in this aka Mr Crash Course in Romance and Ms Tail of the Nine Tailed 1938. It was also Yoon Hyun Min’s first main role. I remember saying to KFG a number of years ago now (and Beez too, I think), there’s a scene where the chairman slaps Kim So Yeon and she hits the deck. I was horrified by such abuse.
Be kind to those memory cells today 😊😊😊
@seankfletcher –
LOL!!!
GASP ! How could there be a BEJJ??? 🤣🤣 Nah! I know you, phl1rxd, and Beez have been here supporting KFG for quite some time now 🥰
Well thanks for treating us again with a fabulous origin story.
I love you Aussies casually talking about your animals over there by throwing out casually “thinking you are a tree they can climb to be safe” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 OMG. Just when I think yeah I’ll visit down under one day you throw something out like that 🤣 And the whole rather large, they are tiny human size.
GAH! Falling for Innocence sounds like a “winner” with that scene. How horrible and awful. I hope some of the other characters were as horrified as you.
LOL! I Promise to schedule some approved time off for the memory cells 🥰
@JJ – I grew up in Tom Price:
https://www.australiasnorthwest.com/explore/pilbara/tom-price/
The house was on the edge of town. We had this magnificent weeping willow in the middle of the front lawn. Every time I put the sprinkler on underneath it, our resident bungarra would come out of the bush and have a drink. He absolutely knew he was the boss and I kept a respectful distance.
I remember coming home from school one day, to see my dad in our lounge room trying to keep our Siamese cat Rama separated from the a Death Adder (deadly snake) using a broom. Rama had proudly brought the snake in. Anyway, Rama was quicker than the snake. He was attacking it like a mongoose does a cobra, and also tossing it in the air and everything in between. Talk about a “what do we do now moment.” I think I mentioned before, facing off with a King Brown.
Despite these larger than life moments, the place is quite safe 😁
The way Kim So Yeon hit the deck in Falling was a full on collapse, not like you see in many CDramas where they gently hit the floor and go “oh, I’ve been hit.” Anyway a great show.
@seankfletcher – There you go again telling heart pounding in the mouth tales finishing up with “despite these larger than life moments, the place is quite safe” 🤣🤣🤣 GAH!!!! 😳
Oh BTW – when you said “Death Adler” the name kinda of gave it away about it being “deadly” just saying….
@JJ – 😁😁😁
Thank you, Sean, for an entertaining and informative EOY post! I watched a lot of dramas this year (101, completed 79), but you’ve got me beat.
I loved quite a few of your top picks. Revenant was one of the best horror/thriller dramas ever. That hair creeped me out every time. I wanted to live in the Meet Yourself town and have that grandmother as my own. My Dearest wrung all the emotions out of me and was my introduction to the incredible Namkoong Min. My #1 favorite of 2023 was Call It Love. This quiet drama called to my introverted soul.
I dropped The Matchmakers at episode four because the I found the plot convoluted and Rowoon’s acting stiff, but your praise has made me decide to give it a second look. I have resisted watching Maiko-san Chi no Makanai-san because I don’t like watching food shows, but I’m a sucker for heart-warming dramas and I’d like to learn more about the geisha culture.
Love the picture of your desk, especially surfing Santa! We use a gavel just like this one at all of our board meetings.
Looking forward to all the great dramas coming our way in 2024 and reading about them on the wonderful Fangirl Verdict blog! Happy holidays to all!
That’s a very fine achievement in terms of dramas undertaken this year, Cathy.
Yes, I was surprised at how good Revenant was. The hair’s shadow was vey Medusa like. If you do get the chance to track down some of Namkoong Min’s shows, I’m sure you will enjoy them too. Call it Love did have me captivated on so many levels. I always like to see how CEO’s in these shows turn out.
Maiko-san is that good. I couldn’t believe my luck there was Meet Yourself, then Maiko-san.
Surfing Santa is a little bit of an icon. Our meetings are streamed, so he made a video appearance last week 😂 That particular gavel is nearly 150 years old, so it has a few stories to tell I’m sure 😉
Fingers crossed re dramas next year! And a very Merry Christmas to you 🧑🎄🎄🎅
Sean! First of all, let me say that I am amazed that there are still prospectors and gold countries and stuff. In my mind, all that is linked to Wild Bill Hickock.
Secondly, do I see a vote for My Dearest? I asked the other day (over at Patreon) which one to start, now that I am running out of A journey to love and Oh no! Here comes trouble. Should it be Mr. Sunshine, My Dearest, or Story of Yanxi Palace?
Thirdly, I am still mad The Revenant is still not released in my country.
Fourthly, Mr. and Ms Chen sounds like a blast.
And last but not least, thank you for taking up time to watch shows that are “off the beaten track” – and Merry, Merry Christmas.
Oh, and while we are at it, take a look at this very accurate presentation of my one and only visit in Australia:
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/VPxcOCVt6rY
Lol, re your one and only visit here, Natalia and thank you for your wonderful comments. I’m sure JJ will look at the YouTube. The Huntsmen spider is very real, I laughed at the stuffed toy version. As for the snakes, I was out taking a look at repairs to a water supply to a town the other day. The breakage to the pipe was right in the middle of what is known as the “swamp.” It’s full of tiger snakes (very deadly). So, the solution was to lay a new pipeline along the road.
Wild Bill would have loved Sandstone. In its hey day, it was a town of 6,000 people. Now there are only 35. The gold is very difficult to extract there. However, the alluvial gold is still all over the place. Each new generation of metal detector makes it easier to find gold another level down.
In terms of what to start next, I would go with Mr Sunshine first. I thought it was absolutely stunning and a great story. Once Revenant is released where you are, I’m sure you will enjoy how good it is. The acting was superb. As for Mr & Mrs Chen, yes it was an absolute blast (and literally on many occasion). The fashion is spot on too. My grand parents got married around the same time and my Nana was a dress maker, so the wedding scene was very reminiscent of when she got married.
I do enjoy finding those other shows. Often, it’s well ahead of when vloggers finally discover them. YouTube really is a great source for shows.
Thank you your Christmas shout out and the same to you and yours 🎅🎄🧑🎄
@seankfletcher – I did watch the YouTube video and yes thats what I completely envision about visiting Australia 🤣
@JJ – what about these guys 😉 https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-12-26/fear-of-sharks-jaws-australian-beaches-cape-town-great-white/103243124?utm_campaign=abc_news_web&utm_content=link&utm_medium=content_shared&utm_source=abc_news_web
Sean – OMG 🤯🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺
Me too Jennifer – that is why if we ever go visit it’s best to stay in Perth and attend Australian football games. Now those are the kind of vicious match ups I can handle.
@JJ & phl – I was going to post this the other day – Pink and Gray Galahs playing with our Christmas lights up in Calingiri – they thought they were quite clever in rearranging the rope lights: https://share.icloud.com/photos/025LcQVRyAqrJ2p-uu_UGhC5g
They are beautiful but smart enough to cause a lot of trouble.
@phl – there is a flock of 500 or so in town. They can be quite funny. Generally, they are harmless and like to clown around a lot. I tried to take a photo of them in the back yard the other morning having a drink and a bath in a pool of water caused by the reticulation over night.
@seankfletcher – Oh I missed this until now!! They wanted to be a part of the Holiday spirit OR they wanted to closer to nibbles on the grass. Thanks for sharing 🥰
@JJ – they were picking out bits of moss between the tiles originally and then started to move the rope lights and thought they were very clever. They new I was watching 😊
Natalia – that was seriously funny.
Phew! Sean! That is a lot of drama views!! I am going to have to watch My Dearest pronto as well as Parallel World 😀 Thank you for sharing your vast array of drama loves and lows. You truly are eclectic in your choices. And, quite madly, we literally have no overlaps!!
Thank you so much, Ele. It is mad how we literally have no overlaps. I know with some of the shows I watch there are literally only a handful of people who look at them, but I do find some good ones. I hope you do like My Dearest, the production values are amazing. As for Parallel World, it has some of the best world building in any story and is a clever show 🤩
Can’t wait! I can only watch one show at a time, two tops, so it’ll take me a while. I’ll let you know how I get on – end of 2024?!
@Ele – I look forward to your musings at the end of next year 😊
Cheers, Sean! Thanks for giving such a detailed tour through your drama year. I always learn a lot, because your ruminations are always populated with a solid string of shows I haven’t seen or didn’t know much about. And of course, we always have a fair bit of overlap too, so great to get your perspective on those as well.
You’re right, I was quite taken with Revenant, an excellent occult mystery with a very spooky (rather than truly scary, at least in my eyes) vibe. Definitely going to find its way on to my “best of…” list.
Call it Love was another good ‘un; I wasn’t truly absorbed in the romance as such (I think I actually found the older sister/best friend romance more interesting), but the nuanced plot and characters were more than enough to elevate it.
I was pleased to see how well Song of the Bandits fit into the traditional Western framework, and although personally I thought it lost some focus and flagged a bit in the homestretch, it was definitely a worthwhile watch.
Queenmaker was also quite good; I’m not generally into purely political shows, but it had a pretty good script, and of course the acting was just top-notch.
I confess that Daily Dose of Sunshine came in from a bit of a different angle than I think I was expecting, but I’m glad for it, as it ended up deeper and more absorbing than expected, as well. Really worthwhile show about mental health and how people struggle with it.
I agree with you about DP2, which I felt like fell short of its predecessor; I can understand why the writers probably didn’t want to just repeat the same thing over again and so wanted to expand in new direction, which I can applaud, but unfortunately it just didn’t feel that interesting or in some ways plausible, and not all that well executed.
And finally, although I don’t think I would necessarily nominate it for the Razzies, I’m in complete agreement with you that Castaway Diva was not what I was quite hoping for. I did stick it out to the end, and don’t regret it, but I feel like the show made some confusing and some regrettable choices, and left us with something kind of meh, rather than very good or even great. Park Eun-bin’s voice, on the other hand, was a true revelation. I’ve had her “Someday” on my daily commute playlist for weeks now, and it’s still impressive.
Anyway, best luck for a great new year of fresh sparkly dramas…
I’m glad I was able to share my insights regarding the year, Trent. Thank you for your thoughtful words too. That’s awesome we did have so many overlaps. Revenant is well and truly a keeper. I’m glad you got to appreciate Queenmaker. I like it when we get to see acting at its best. That’s awesome re Park Eun-bin, because she really is something else.
I was really happy with the quality of the content put out this year. I do think the biggest change has been Kdramas continuing to move away from 16 episodes. Even though I’m watching a number right now that have at least 16 episodes I find myself wondering whether they need to have that number.
I know I ended up watching way more Chinese dramas than I thought I would, but the level of diversity and the quality coming through is hard to ignore. Plus I find the machinations of the censorship office fascinating 😉
Lol re the fresh sparkly dramas. I’m always reminded of Over The Hedge whenever I think of sparkly things. 😂🤣😂 Next year does look like a Kdrama bonanza, but as we know, that can change in the blink of an eye.
So, here’s to so more awesome drama watching in 2024 🎇
Awesome post Sean! Thank you so much. I liked a lot of titles that you mentioned here.
Meet Yourself and Nothing But You were pretty much my personal winners from this year and Agency is just gold dust.
Still trying to get through a few titles to close the year out. Want to check out Parallel World at least as I was immediately interested after reading JJ’s post. And possibly My Dearest and Alliance if time allows before I can get my EOY post out.
Thank you for the awesome feedback, ABV. That’s fantastic you have Meet Yourself, Nothing But You and Agency right up there.
Parallel World has so many interesting parts to it and they all mash together really well.
As I keep telling everybody, My Dearest is a show that deserves a binge watch. Some of the best cliff hangers of all time are in that show.
I started The Lonely Warrior today, a police CDrama and boy oh boy it’s got off to a good start 😊
Keep those great comments happening around the blog 😉
You’re welcome. As it stands, those are my top 3 from 2023 I’d say. But there are plenty of other titles on your post that are also among my highlights. Daily Dose of Sunshine, Call It Love, Dr. Romantic 3 to name a few.
Also quite liked When I Fly Towards You, Divorce Attorney Shin, Revenant, Anna and The Kidnapping Day. So that is a wide variety of titles right there.
It seems to be unlike any series that I have experienced in K-drama or C-drama which is why I am so interested in checking out Parallel World.
Agree with you. That is why I cannot bear to keep that for when I am not totally free. I have the next week or so off so hopefully I can find the right time to binge My Dearest.
The Lonely Warrior? New title on to my watch list. Seems intriguing.
I started a C-Drama last night called Fake It Till You Make it which apparently blends workplace drama with romance in a very realistic fashion. The flirting and organic progression of the OTP is a highlight from what I read. Watched 2 episodes late at night and hope to make more progress today.
Will do 😀 Thanks!
I have been thinking about Fake It Till You Make It, ABV. So, I might just bump it up the list.
I’m sure you will get something out of Parallel World. I think it’s the type of show the Chinese do very well.
Enjoy your week off and watching My Dearest 😊😉😊
Cool. Will let you know how it turned out once I complete it.
I actually could not stop myself from picking up Parallel World so I decided to just sample it yesterday night. Watched 3 episodes and I am already hooked. So I might just finish that first before I knock off Fake It Till You Make It.
Yeah. My week off starts today. Let’s see what I can manage. 😊
@ABV – Wise decision one that I support wholeheartedly to pick up Parallel World!!! Do share your thoughts in the Deep Dive Zone please!!!
@JJ 8 episodes in, definitely liking it so far. Ye Liu Xi is just….. Well, better I talk about this series after I watch more.
Also saw what you mentioned about Fake It Till You Make It. I also found the first few episodes quite uncomfortable to watch (more because of how the workplace portrayal is so brutal). I am on episode 5 right now. Usually, I watch one series at a time but I just could not find it easy to binge which is why I switched to Parallel World. But, I am slowly taking to the characters in Fake It Till You Make It. Decided to watch an episode or two a day till the end of next week while I watch my priority titles. I do know that it gets better and the relationship between the leads is pretty good as it goes on.
Thanks, ABV. Also, well done on getting underway with Parallel World 😉
Thank you. 16 episodes in and I am enjoying it a lot so far.
@seankfletcher – I will share something with you that I rarely say about the dramas I watch, so be prepared 🫣😇
I really disliked (closer to loathed) the first 5 episodes of Fake it Til You Make it, then Episode 6 turned the corner for me, thankfully because it almost became my 2nd official drop ever. I only held on because (I believe it was Alexandra) made special not to mention it to me specifically. I wrote extensively about my journey with that Show in the Deep Dive Zone while watching the Show. Ill try to find it.
@JJ – well, that makes things interesting 🧐 I guess I will have to see how I go 😉
Wow, Sean, what a(nother) great post. I did grab some coffee half way through but didn’t need it at all ☕️😂
I’m not nearly as adventurous or as disciplined as you are, but there’s a lot of overlap between our K-lists. Which makes me think I will come back to this list when I want to branch out (miracles can occur).
Thanks for another great post and best wishes for a fantastic holiday.
Cheers and thank you, J3ffc. I’m very glad that there is such an overlap with our K-lists. There were some great Kdramas this year. If you come back to my list, awesome 😊 You do seem to be branching out 😉
I think I might add some of my favourite non-Asian shows for this year over at the Watercooler.
All the very best for Christmas 🎅🎄🎁
Another impressive year, Sean!! The Matchmakers does sound fun, and you all are making me curious about My Dearest. A Familiar Stranger is on my list too, glad you liked it! I did have to look up sand goannas but they look fun
@uyen – YES!!! Do check out Matchmakers. I have had such unexpected fun with the Show. Rowoon has been a surprising delight in his comedic turn. Hope you at least peek at it!!!
Thank you very much, Uyen. The Matchmakers is that good. Rowoon has come a long way and is less awkward as show unfolds. Just watching it alone for the in depth look at the Joseon wedding process is worth it. The OTP is special too.
My Dearest is worth a peek. It’s a show that needs watching without interruptions 😊 As far as those goannas go, I need to dig out some photos as I have across ones much bigger than what is described on the internet. Anyway, I have some stories about them 😉
YES!!! I am doing the Math for you and thats 81 Shows. YES!!!
I WIN!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ahem, that wasnt me. Just a someone pretending to me and whole loves the idea of a competition. I am back in control of the keyboard, so let’s continue.
Ohhhh, look your Cdrama breakdown is much higher than mine with yours being at 48%! Well done.
Love it you loved Call it Love!! Me, too. Oh My Dearest. Maybe January we will do this thing called watch you.
WIFTY – I am still on Episode 7……
I love all the love Nothing But You is getting. And I did love it even though it wasnt in my Top Favorites for some reason. Maybe thats an error my part. Hmmmmm.
WHOA only 1 Rom/Com made it on your list??? Wow…thats saying something.
YAY for Matchmakers making your list!!! I have been enjoying that Show so much, I have put off watching the remaining episodes at the moment. Rowoon and Cho Yi Hyun are a great pair. BTW – Rowoon actually prefers his birth name. Do you know it? I DO !! Get it. “I DO” 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Sorry I totally digressed and laughed at my own joke 🤣🤣🤣
You never give the right answer to your wife 🤣🤣🤣 Tell her I finished and enjoy The Longest Promise. I did stall at Episode 40. And after a week break, I got back in the saddle and finished it off with some mild disappointment! But that CGI in that Show was some of the best I have seen in Cdramaland so far.
We wont discuss King the Land between. You are allowed to be wrong here and there. 😂
I am tired of some of our female veteran actors like Park Ji Young playing villainous women. But, man, she is so good here in Matchmakers, I’ll allow it.
BTW I think all these Short Shows you watch having been skewing your numbers. This must be investigated thoroughly 😂😂😂😂
Oh I LOVE you have an award for best opening credits!!! Sometimes they are some fabulous opening credits and Park’s Marriage Contract is one of them! I must look back in detail now to look for more hints!
Ohhh I totally forgot all about wanting to see that movie – Hidden Strike. Thank you for reminding me!!!
And yes, First Responders 2 was a little more tough to handle the Part 1 which I preferred. I still have to rewatch the last 4 episodes which I zipped through needing to know the end to reduce my stress!!!
What an EXCELLENT Top 10 list. JJ approved! Well done, Sir. You make us all proud 🥰
Thank you for giving me more titles to add to my watchlist for 2024!! I’ll let you know about all of them.
It’s been a fun year Sean with your Cdrama suggestions especially Mr & Mrs. Chen. It is a standout for sure and compares to nothing that came before it in my opinion.
GAH!!!! Cut your drama watching back?? WHHHHHHHYYYYYYYY?????? Say it isnt so! Unless of course there is very good reason, then we will consider a petition requesting necessary time off. Until then, get prepared for an amazing 2024 Drama watching season Mr. Fletcher!!! 🥰
It’s been such an awesome drama year that I had to remind myself what some shows were about, JJ 😊
I’m glad you weren’t possessed for too long 😂
I’m glad you approve of the Top 10 list. Kdramas put their hand up when it really counted.
Lol re Rowoon. That’s right up there with the joke I told at the work Christmas party last Saturday night: What goes oh, oh, oh…
Yes, I am aware of his actual name.
Of the current Kdramas, I am enjoying Park’s Contract Marriage, My Demon and My Man is Cupid (even if it is slightly kooky). The Matchmakers is so good. That whole sequence of potential spouses being viewed while moving around in the shape of the wedding knot was so well done. In fact, the show has gone to great lengths to point out other wedding details that we don’t normally see.
When you come to watch My Dearest, I think you will need to do what phl did. Make sure you sit down and watch it with now interruptions because you will need to hold your breath in anticipation at times. The cliff hangers were something else.
As for Mr & Mrs Chen, I would love to see those two together again. The producers and director got that combination spot on. As they did with Parallel World too.
I think there is more of a shake out to come re CDramas as the industry there keeps adjusting. Shows held back previously are starting to get released more and more.
That’s good re Hidden Strike. It’s a decent movie.
Yes, my poor suffering wife. She went and put tinsel on my car this morning in retribution 😂🤣😂 Her car has reindeer “ears” and Rudolph the Reindeer’s re nose.
Yes, I do need to make decisions about my watching for next year. I may not change anything, but I do have a few books I need to catch up on 😉
Wow! Thank you for this amazing post!
My pleasure, Anadita. Thank you for reading it 😊
