Hey everyone!
Like what we did for the past couple of years, we’re having guest posts from the lovely folks on Patreon, to help us take stock of our drama years, yay! 🥳
We’ll be seeing about 2 guest posts per week, and this will unfold into January 2023, and that’s perfectly ok.
My annual year-in-review, which usually comes out in December, will also come out in January (or thereabouts 😅), after all the guest posts have been published.
If you missed our earlier posts, you can check them out as follows: Ele, Natalia, JJ, Sean, j3ffc, Uyen, MC, Elaine.
Today, I’m pleased to announce that lotusgirl is sharing her drama year.
We haven’t seen lotusgirl around as much this past year, but, as you’ll see in her post, she’s been enjoying a full and active life, what with her varied interests AND her expanding brood of grandkids!
Among her many talents, lotusgirl is also a skilled photographer and artist, and you can check out more of her fantastic work at her blog here! 🤩 You can find her on Instagram @lamosscreative as well.
I don’t know how she does it, but in spite of it all, lotusgirl still makes time for dramas, and for us, her pals, over at Patreon.
Thanks lotusgirl, for making time for us – and for taking the time to write this post!
I hope you guys enjoy!
~ KFG ❤️
Lotusgirl’s Year in Dramas
Thank you! Thank you! Here’s to the amazing KFG! The hostess with the mostest! We love her!
Thanks for entrusting your blog baby to us Drama junkies from Patreon. She is a brave soul! She has really gotten to know us though our interactions on Patreon so maybe that helps her not be worried that we’ll burn the place down or anything.
I always love reading the comments of all those who have already posted their Year in Dramas so far. It’s been fun to get to know and become friends with my fellow readers and KFG on Patreon. It’s a wonderful community.
My Kdrama journey started in late 2016 under my daughter’s influence. The whole story is HERE and HERE if you’re interested.
Just a little bit of an update about me:
I’m getting a new grandson in a few weeks. He’s due at the beginning of February. That will bring the grand total up to 6 grandchildren for this music loving, artist, photographer and crafter who studied Latin and French in school.
I still paint often, but my latest projects have tended to be more in the knitting vein with all the little ones in the family.
Here are the last two animals I made.
The first is directly from the pattern.
The Ram:
The second is made from the pattern with a lot of creative maneuvering to make it into Fox McCloud at my son’s request for his little girl.
Fox McCloud:

I have very varied tastes in dramas.
Political machinations, I’m good;
gooey romance, I’m good;
musical, I’m very good;
a bit of murder even the serial kind, I’m good (although this has gotten a little or a lot pervasive in romances lately and unnecessarily so);
Action,
Sci-Fi,
Fantasy,
Time hijinks,
Ghosts,
Monsters,
Mysteries,
I’m all good, even modified zombies like the ones in Happiness,
(I’ve had to change this from past years. Zombies used to be a no-go zone.) I’m just not into shows with gratuitous violence or steaminess.
Now that you know all that, let’s get on with the show.
Let’s get this part done at the beginning so there won’t be a downer later. Yes, I am the one who likes the bad news first and then the good.
Disappointments:
You know we all have them! It’s inevitable. A show is so built up, and we are soooo excited to see it… then duh, duh, duh.
Crash Course in Romance — so many actors I love and so many cute scenes — the story went off the track into a lot of weeds.
King the Land — so anticipated, so much beauty to be found and so many swoony scenes — the story lost its focus and heart.
Sweet Home 2 — I was surprised by how much I loved the first one and was so excited for the continuation of the story — the story went in too many different directions with the mass mayhem in the stadium and too much, too much and not enough focus on the main thread of the story.
It reminded me of Harry Potter book 5 (not in the storyline but in the wondering around nature of things where you get lost in the minutia of something cool or weird happening and there’s not enough editing).
My Lovely Liar — so much great music, some real heart and cuteness with swooniness thrown in on occasion — the story spent too much time in murder and lost what made the beginning work.
Heartbeat — such a unique storyline and so much hilarity from Taecyeon — the story got lost and meandered a bit and some of the humor was too OTT for me.
Castaway Diva — Beautiful music and voices and a unique set up (this should have been a slam dunk. It’s a musical for crying out loud! It should have at least been in my top 10).
Alas as much as I loved it, it drove me kind of crazy. All the murder distraction. Couldn’t this have been more about the amazing success of the girl stranded on an island for 15 years and the comeback of her idol?
I even liked the shifting of what they really wanted into the storyline, so that wasn’t the problem. A little less mayhem and a lot more singing would have made this much better.
I chose all my honorees by how much I enjoyed the shows and, for the individuals, their performances.
Honorable Mentions:
All of these worked for me and I enjoyed them very much. They had their flaws, but were worth the watch.
Not in any particular order:
Call It Love, Divorce Atty Shin, Not Others, The Glory Pts. 1 and 2, The Secret Romantic Guesthouse, Silent (Japanese), Payback: Money & Power, Miraculous Brothers, One Day Off, See You in my 19th Life, Celebrity, Alchemy of Souls 2, Soundtrack 2, Island Pts. 1 and 2
Top 10 from 2023
10. Black Knight
I watched this because I liked the premise and wanted to see Kim Woo Bin be all cool and tough and take no prisoners!
In a dystopian world “devastated by air pollution” according to Netflix, KWB plays 5-8 the toughest of the Black Nights, the deliverymen who bring oxygen and necessities to the general populace.
The storyline was unique and twisty-turny. There is a definite need for suspension of disbelieve which I don’t have a problem with. I tend to go with the flow on that.
I loved the relationship that 5-8 has with his trainee and the trainee’s story. Show kept me on the edge of my seat. It is pretty short at 6 episodes.
I don’t know if you would have the same reaction as I did, but here’s some info in case you need it like I did.
I was so worried about KWB’s health (after his recent recovery from cancer) when I saw him smoking in some scenes. I found out though that the cigarettes were just props and the smoke was CGI. I was so relieved.
9. Doona
I watched this because I liked the premise and have a soft spot for Yang Se Jong. He was in one of the early Kdramas I watched. Also, Suzy Bae had done such a good job with the show Anna last year that I wanted to see her acting again in something.
The first episode about turned me off to it though. Suzy Bae’s character, Doona is so unpleasant that I thought I couldn’t handle watching the whole series with someone like that around.
This is where having a hard time dropping a show is a good thing. I thought I should keep going. I’m glad I did.
Doona’s character arc was very compelling, and I loved the slow deliberate way she changes and conquers her demons and the role that Yang Se Jong’s character, Lee Won Joon plays in her development. I was very impressed with YSJ and SB’s acting in this.
I watched this because I liked the set up and because I generally like Park Bo Young.
I was expecting this to be a very different, very cheery show going in. It was much more serious and realistic about mental illness than I expected.
Show reached in a touched my heart deeply especially when our main character or someone close to her was dealing with some sort of trauma or disorder.
I watched this because I watched the Taiwanese version and enjoyed it and wanted to see what Korea would do with the storyline.
Both shows were great! I know most people in these parts preferred the Taiwanese version, but I preferred the Korean (except for the terrible wig used for one of the characters in some later episodes).
6. The Good Bad Mother
I didn’t like the title or the premise of this one at first, but I heard a lot of good reports about it. I kept putting off watching it until it was all out and, at that point, I hit a hard lull in my watching. I decided to give it a try and blew through all the episodes.
It was not at all like I had thought.
Ra Mi Ran gives an amazing performance. Lee Do Hyun does a great job as the son who returns home after a traffic accident that leaves him different than the ambitious student who made such a great name for himself but thought his mother was so mean to him growing up.
I loved how they came to see each other through the course of the story.
5. Twinkling Watermelon
I watched this because it was a musical and the premise was interesting, too.
I adored the music! And the dancing! And the way performing gave each of the band members such joy!
This watch was basically a fair amount of goofy smiling for me. It was such a fun escape except for when it made me cry.
4. The Kidnapping Day
This one had fallen under the radar for me. It was all out when I found it on Prime Video. I had seen a trailer for it and it seemed like it had potential.
Yoon Kye Sang plays Kim Myung Joon, a desperate man trying to save his daughter who is in the hospital and needs a surgery that he doesn’t have money for. His ex-wife comes to him with a proposal that he kidnap Choi Ro Hee, played amazingly well by Yu Na, and ransom her back to her parents for the money.
Myung Joon decides to do it against his better judgement. When he goes to her neighborhood to kidnap her, he accidentally hits her when she runs into the street.
[SPOILER ALERT]
She ends up with amnesia (yes, tropey, but it works) from the accident. He tells her he is her father and takes care of her. He decides to take her back to her parents but discovers they have both died in a car accident.
What is so great about this show is the relationship between Myung Joon and Ro Hee. She is incredibly smart and figures out pretty quick that Myung Joon isn’t her dad. Still, he’s an amazing dad.
[END SPOILER]
Through all the twisty-turniness, murder, mayhem, torture and mad-scientist’s scheming, and general all-around greed, he is the one person she can count on. I loved it.
Unlike KFG, I love medical shows. There was a time I wanted to be a doctor and took my fair share of medical classes.
Doctors and nurses taking good care of patients makes me happy.
With Master Kim managing the doctors, they better make the patients their priority. I loved the first 2 seasons of this, so I was eagerly anticipating this one. It was fantastic though not as good as season 2.
[SPOILER ALERT]
Medical hi-jinks, a new trama center for Doldam Hospital, but, no, really just next door to Doldam and basically taking the best trauma people from Doldam.
Oh! No! And the trama center has a lot of rules about who they can and can’t treat. It’s a controversy. And there are tragedies happening all the while.
Of course, Master Kim, masterfully handles things — well sort of — while his hand cramping and numbness worsen to the point that he often has to stop during operations or can’t operate at all, gasp!
Then, all heck breaks loose! Building collapse! Lawsuits! Fire! Deaths! Injuries! That was why we needed the hospitals to work together people!
[END SPOILER]
It was a fun ride! Lots of adrenaline!
2. My Dearest
I watched this because Sean said it was maybe one of his all-time favorite shows. I hadn’t watched it before because of the mixed reviews I was getting. I usually agree with Sean over on Patreon and so I bit the bullet and gave it a try.
The first episode is not my favorite. Kind of like with Doona, some of the main characters were kind of grating. I persisted in part because some of the cinematography was so nice. That got me through until the characters had grown some.
Then, wow! The story filled out and the characters grew and changed and their honest natures shown through sometimes and became who they were.
The cinematography and the music were characters in their own right to me. It is a show that was just beautiful to watch, and, when the music was playing, listen to. There were so many stunning shots! Namgoong Min was also amazing!
1. Moving
As soon as I saw the trailer for this, I knew it was special. Unique storyline. Amazing cast. Gifts or Curses. New approach.
As I recall it was on Disney+ in Asia, but I couldn’t get it in the US. I was so mad. Why would they exclude the US on such an amazing show? It was obvious someone had spent a lot of money on it. The special effects, costuming, make-up, set, etc., were all the next level.
I was complaining on Patreon about not being able to see it and someone told me that some of the Disney+ shows end up on Hulu. I went and looked, and, lo and behold, it was on Hulu. I did a little happy dance.
A new channel providing Kdramas that I’m already paying for. That’s rare.
I don’t know if they dropped all the episodes at once or if I just didn’t get to see it until all the episodes were out, but I binge watched it late into the night.
It did not disappoint.
The script is tight. The characters are fully developed. The depth of the script is pretty incredible.
As things get revealed little by little and the full picture of the magnitude of what our teenage protagonists face is stunning. Their parents pick up whatever slack there is as best they can.
I love the teens and their parents so much! I’m discovering that some of the best and most original shows are, like this one, based on a webtoon. (Congratulations, Kang Full!)
I’m so impressed with this show! I don’t want to give any spoilers, but there is some significant violence in some episodes (and I think anyone watching it should know that). There is basically a war going on.
If you haven’t seen it. At least give it a try. If the violence isn’t too much for you, and you don’t dislike shows about people with special abilities, I think you’ll love it.
Awards
Best Lead Actor, Actress
Han Hyo Joo — Moving

From loving mother and all she went through to stealthy spy (sometimes in a flash) and awkward young woman falling in love. She played them all.
Namgoong Min — My Dearest

Wow! His expressions captured so much: the mask he wore as a fop or when hiding his true intensions; the rawness when he allowed the mask to drop. The incredible athleticism of his roll was really something as well.
Best Supporting Actor, Actress
Lim Ji Yeon — The Glory

To be able to shift from goddess to devil and back to complete innocence like lightning was so cool and frightening. She’s got some serious skills. Wow!
Ryu Seung Ryong — Moving
I adored his character and he made me feel and bawl, not just cry, but ugly bawl. That’s impressive.
Best OTP
Li Mi Hyun and Kim Doo Shik — Moving

Their romance was so cute at first and then so deep and real. They were perfect together and even when they were apart.
Best Music
My Dearest
Twinkling Watermelon
Movies I just have to mention:
The Night Owl
—actually from 2022 but just became available on Viki in the US. I had to rent it, but I was glad I did (Alas, that’s not always the case. I’m looking at you, Love Reset).
The film has historical parameters but is fictional.
Set in the Joseon Dynasty in 1645 when the crown prince dies. Ryu Jun Yeol plays a blind acupuncturist who can see normally in the dark and witnesses the death. I don’t want to reveal more than that if you haven’t seen it.
It is so well done and completely gripping. Edge of your seat.
Kill Boksoon
—on Netflix in the US.
Violence warning if you have problems with that. Jeon Do Yeon plays a famous assassin, who’s a single mom to a teenage daughter. Her relationship with her daughter is great. It’s non-stop. Funny, scary, poignant.
It hit me while I was writing this section up that the two leads in these movies were the leads in my favorite movie in 2021. I suppose they are both still working hard.
Wrap up
It was mostly a good year for kdramas.
I dipped my toes into Jdoramas a bit this year. I didn’t have a favorite from 2023 that made my top ten. Silent made the honorable mentions though.
My favorite was one from 2016 called The Full-time Wife Escape Artist. I love how the episodes incorporated dance breaks for the title shot and the end credits. So fun!
What I’m still in the process of watching now:
This means I at least like it enough to keep watching.
On Netflix:
My Demon
Song of the Bandits
Why didn’t I tell you a million times? (Japanese)
The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko house (Japanese)
Welcome to Samdal-ri
On Prime Video:
My Man is Cupid
Viki:
The Matchmakers
Moon in the day
My Lovely Boxer
The Story of Park’s Wedding Contract
A good day to be a dog
Hulu:
Maestra: Strings of Truth
Merry K-watching!

Lotus Girl I thought you had no time for dramas and you had so many under your belt! Lol. Also your creations are gorgeous!!
There are so many shows on your list that I want to watch! I think I will be afraid of The Night Owl, but it has Ryu Joon Yeol and I love him so much.
MOVING am I right, you could pretty much nominate them in every single category! As it is I had to restrain myself from mentioning Moving throughout my entire Year in Review. I did love Han Hyo Joo and Zo In Sung but… restraint, restraint! Haha.
THE FULL TIME WIFE ESCAPIST AH I truly love that show SO DARNED much; its on my favourites list. I wish I had more time and I could re-watch it, just for its cuteness. And that KOI song? Never fails to make me smile!
And congrats on the upcoming grandson!
Phew, LotusGirl, that’s a lot of shows – well done! I was thinking of trying Black Knight – thank you for the heads-up about the cigarette!!
Side-note, I like your tree paintings, especially the one in Ireland – nice twisty rooty texture 😍
Thanks! about my tree paintings. They are some of my favorite things to paint.
I figured some of you would be as concerned about Woobie as I was. We have a lot of caring people in our group.
I think my total for shows was 53. Some short some medium length. 1 was 50 episodes but all the others were 24 or less–mostly 16 eps or less. And I wasn’t really happy with a lot of it. I can’t believe I kept watching it.
Congratulations on your terrific EOY post, new grandchild and beautiful knitting projects, LotusGirl! Your 2023 watchlist is impressive. And thanks for including movies! I really like that you stuck with 2023 shows.
I’m glad to know you enjoyed “The Good Bad Mother” as much as I did. That show seems to be over-looked. My Kdrama taste seems to align fairly well with yours so that enhanced my enjoyment of your choices and comments. Now I’m going to add a few that I missed, starting with “The Kidnapping” and “The Night Owl.”
Here’s to more Kdramas in 2024! May all your watches be good dramas!
It’s always fun to find someone whose tastes align with our own. You’ll have to share some of your faves with me. You won’t go wrong with The Night Owl and The Kidnapping Day. I hope you like them as much as I did.
Here’s hoping 2024 is a good year for great dramas. Oh, that all my watches could be good ones! That would be a dream.
OH, and congrats on grandchild #6! We are now tied!
Wow! I thought you were much younger than me. Yay for grandchildren!
@lotusgirl, thanks for sharing your drama journey with us this year! Wonderful post – I especially enjoyed your mission statement with classic examples of all of the genres that you enjoy (seems like all of them!). We have a lot of overlap in shows/faves/disappointments this year, including the fact that I’m now on E12 of two of your top ten, “Moving” and “Daily Dose of Sunshine”. I think the tone of the latter is really good although I was with you in being thrown off by the title (I just learned what it refers to in the context of the show). Thanks to you and others I now know to have some Kleenex handy for upcoming episodes of “Moving” as well.
I am highly impressed by your ongoing list of watched dramas. Get me beyond 2 or 3 and my brain starts to boil.
And a final thank you for teaching me something that I didn’t know: “Twinkling Watermelon” is a musical??!! It’s my own fault, really; it’s what you get by being so spoiler-averse that you don’t read show synopses.
Here’s hoping for a great crop in 2024.
On Patreon I often think we are on the same page with dramas! I think we do have similar tastes. I do like them all mostly. I’m still a bit averse to the zombie Universe. I still haven’t watched Kingdom or any of its sequels or spinoffs. Some shows have proved too violent for my taste and dropping them became necessary.
I’m glad I could provide you with the Musical insight for Twinkling Watermelon.
My watching list is especially long right now, but not overly much. When I’m watching currently showing series I’m right up to where the show is airing so I have to have something to watch in between. Some are shows that I started and realized were promising but had to set aside when a current show came on and then got distracted by a new discovery like Song of Bandits and then had to go back to a new current one and then got distracted by… Get the picture. Plus, one, Makanai, I’m watching with one of my daughters, so that is more on her schedule than mine.
LOL, glad to hear that I project young on Patreon! Also, forgot to mention the awesome knitting projects – so fun.
Not really a zombie enthusiast, am I, but I have enjoyed a few of them. I am still impressed with your schedule, though. I am up to date on Samdal-ri but that’s a rare thing for me.
Glad to see you are enjoying Makanai with your daughter – it was one my fave shows of last year! Have you gotten to the zombie episode yet?
Thanks about the knitting. I have to keep my hands busy.
You’re still working, right? The forced schedule of working on someone else’s dime is that they want you to work full days. As an artist, I work when I want to. It’s a trade off. I really don’t make much. My husband is glad if I just break even which is about where I am. *hangs head* Still I rarely watch during the day. I think of it as my kick back time in the evenings.
I panicked for a minute when you said there was a zombie episode in Makanai. Then I thought you were joking. I had to google it. We are in episode 5. I’m glad to know I’ll need to prepare myself for that. Thanks for the heads up.
I do work full time, but it’s not a burden. I love my job and still find it fulfilling. It does take up time though…😂
On the other hand, my wife doesn’t like K-drama so all of my watching time is in found time (gym, early mornings, after she does to bed, plus an hour or two on the weekends). This is one reason I can’t compare with most of our folks for Drama Flux (and one reasons I am so grateful for the Patreon crowd in helping me pick out which shows are worth investing in).
Makanai is sooo good – no matter who shows up! 🧟♂️ Do let us know who you think when it’s all done.
Hello dear
Lovely EOY post and even more lovely knitting toys. I wish I could have the Fox McCloud toy – so adorable 🥰. Also as people would have told already by now – you are amazing in knitting 👍. I am all for people having varied interests and hobbies especially as we get older 🙌💐.
On dramas – the only one that I have watched on your top 10 list is – My Dearest. It was indeed a very special show and thanks for all the good words on it. S1 was classic. S2 though meandered a bit here and there yet managed to finish on a happy note. On NKM – he so deserves it and I am his newly minted international fan. I also started watching it because Sean mentioned about it in Sep in Patreon and that piqued my interest and then I ended up binge-watching S1 in end Sep. For S2 I watched it when it aired concurrently in Oct/Nov.
Thanks for the good words on The Black Knight, Moving, The Good Bad Mother, Daily Dose of Sunshine and Twinkling Watermelon. They are all on my list but not sure when I could watch them given my drama backlog. And I can understand your concern for Kim Woo-bin – he is a very good actor and needs to take care of his health and I hope he gets more solid roles that matches his presence/acting skills.
Now I am really curious here – I am a solid Kim Nam Gil fan and yet I couldn’t really appreciate Island – Part 1 and Part 2. Since you have mentioned it in your honourable mentions list – it will be helpful to know what you liked in that drama. Maybe I missed something as even Sean seems to have enjoyed Part 2.
Also good to know you are watching Song of the Bandits, Makanai and Welcome to Samdal-ri – I thoroughly enjoyed all 3 of them (WTS still has 2 more episodes to go as of today and all the 14 episodes so far has been amazing for me personally as I am a big JCW fan 🙃). I will wait to hear on all these dramas either in Patreon or in your 2024 EOY post 👍❤️🤞. take care and happy knitting and drama-watching.
Thanks for the knitting love! The Fox McCloud was fun to work on because I really had to invent the outfit myself. Creativity is so invigorating to me. I’d never heard of FM before my son and his wife thought it would be fun to have that character. I was really out of the loop. Tons of people know who he is.
I’m loving WTS so much! It is such a great show! I also have a soft spot for JCW. It’s been fun to have JCW working with Kim Mi Kyung again! I adore her!
I found a genuineness in Kim Nam Gil that I love to have in actors when I can get it. I hadn’t really seen much of anything with him in it before Island, so I was discovering him as I watched the show. That could have helped me enjoy the show more than someone who is a fan and wondering what the heck he is doing in a show like that. It also helped that I like that kind of mysterious setting with fantastical elements and danger looming. I also really enjoyed the tongue in cheek humor. There were points when I literally laughed out loud at some of the jokes. A little well placed black humor is an art.
I’m loving Makanai! I’m in the early eps of The Song of Bandits. It’s pretty compelling, so I will def. keep watching.
Lovely to know all the details. I could vaguely recall FM because of my younger cousins back in those days and your final-output of FM is amazing/very creative. I was also reading up on FM and understood where the origins came from. trivia – I was in Kamakura (Japan) recently and visited a Shinto shrine there wherein the main protective deity was the fox. So I could see the connect and the inspiration behind FM.
Now on K-dramas – thank you for explaining what you liked in Island. I think I should re-watch this drama with a fresh pair of eyes. The other thing I want to mention is this: If you found KNG so genuine/likeable in Island (which I believe is one of his weakest roles), then I convinced that he must be a really good actor and I am happy that I am his fan. I did write about his work/dramas in KFG’s blog and hopefully you can read that and get to see more of his other meaningful works. Especially look out for Live up to your name which is I personally believe is one of his best.
Good to know that you are enjoying all the other dramas. Good luck and best wishes for another great drama year in 2024.
Reading your awesome EOY post has put a big smile on my face Lotusgirl. What a breathtaking array of shows you have watched 🤩🤩🤩 I also loved your wonderful creations.
It was so good to see the pic of Jung_E in there. I rated this movie quite highly and found it really resonated with what I like about sci-fi. I enjoyed Black Knight, but it was a wasted opportunity with what could have been a story to rival Solyent Green, but never mind. Kdramaland is taking leaps and bounds re sci-fi and that’s a good thing.
I’m so glad you got to enjoy My Dearest. I was watching NKM at the awards ceremony recently and he said he couldn’t have achieved what he did in this role without acting across from AEJ, despite her being his junior he said she was fabulous, and of course she was.
I do hope you are enjoying The Makanai as it is such a beautiful story. Also, with the Matchmakers because in my view was such a pleasant and endearing surprise.
The Kidnapping Day was a show that took me by surprise and pleasantly so because I was hoping it would be good, which it was. How can these Korean child actors be so talented?
I did enjoy Boksoon too. I am in awe of how good she was as an action heroine as much as the romantic and down to earth lead.
There are so many more shows we lined up on and made me realise even more that perhaps I didn’t sleep much last year!
So, here is to what should also be an amazing drama year. I’m still watching a heap of shows from 2023 and earlier, so I haven’t really kicked off with 2024 yet, but it will happen soon enough 😊😊😊
Sean – thanks for that awards info on My Dearest. Agree that AEJ is as much an integral part of MD’s success. She made NKM look vulnerable/happy/sad and I was very much invested in their love story as did an entire drama watching community.
And I have to agree again whole-heartedly on these Korean child actors. Whomever I have seen in the dramas so far have all been amazing/superb. Maybe some special diet by their parents I guess 😜.
@Princess Jasmine – 😆😆😆
Yes, Sean and Princess.Jasmine, AEJ is integral to MD’s success and NM’s superb acting in the show. She did an amazing job as well.
AND! The Korean child actors are the next level! They amaze me!
I’m glad to see more SciFi in the Kdrama lineup. I was pleasantly surprised by Jung_E. It was a lot more moving than I had expected. Black Knight definitely showed signs of the Kdrama wasting disease. Such great lead in and build up and such iffy follow through in the later episodes. Yes! What could have been! But even with that I loved the show for its daring in the characters and storyline and the mentorship aspects.
If you haven’t seen The Night Owl you should when you get the chance. It is very moving and so well done. At basically 2 hours, it is a steal as far as time goes.
I’m loving the Makanai! It fills me with Joy to watch Kiyo all excited about cooking and recipes. I’m watching it with one of my daughters, so it is taking longer because she has more commitments than I do with a 2 year old.
I found for Jung_E and her daughter I really wanted the best for them 😊
I will take a look at The Night Owl. It sounds like it has a different take on events at that time.
We all need a Kiyo in our lives. I hope the two year old is a little cutie 😊
As adorable as they come!
What a great EOY review! I loved the two movies you mentioned. We don’t always talk about KMovies, but there are some great ones out there, and they can provide fillers when we are between shows or to hep get us through those times we have to wait for episode drops.
I loved your top ten list a lot and I enjoyed those dramas as well.
Happy New year!!
Thanks! I’m glad you loved my top 10! We must have some pretty similar tastes.
Also. You are right about the movies. They are great for something in between the longer shows or to help us be patient for that next episode that won’t be coming for 6 whole more days!
I was really thrilled with The Night Owl! I hadn’t even known about it. I remember something about Ryu Jun Yeol growing his hair out really long about then for a role. Or maybe that was for Lost. Anyway. It was so exciting to get something I wasn’t expecting, and on top of that, it was phenomenal.
@LotusGirl – Congrats on the new grandson!!! You will soon have a half dozen and I bet they all keep you quite busy, happily 🙂
Ohhh I love your two new projects. Soooo cute! Ever thought of making a KFG Avatar one to see you company during your Kdramas? Just throwing it out there 😉🤭🦄
I loved how you put together your section on your varied tastes in dramas!!! I might have to “borrow” that for next year if you dont mind 🙂
What is the third picture from though? On tvN? With the FL in the purple shirt? Hmmmm Secret Garden?
Ohhhh I still have to see Dream High!!!
Ohhh I didnt know you could handle intense Action! AWESOME!!!
I absolutely LOVE that you started with the bad news first!!! Excellent!!! Oh it’s really hard to disagree with the points you made in your list except for King the Land. I just ate it up and loved it from beginning to end for the fun the Show provided and the light hearted town. Those two have chemistry for days!!!
Oh someone else who watched Secret Romantic Guesthouse!!! Started off so good, then well. You know you saw it 🙂 Oh you watched Miraculous Brothers! I had been eyeing it but never pushed play! Should?!! Yay more love for 19th Life!!!!
More love for The Good Bad Mother!!! We are so in agreement !!!
I had been considering Kidnapping Day then forgot about it. I read your spoilers so I would be prepared in case I remember and find it again 🙂
Couldnt agree more with you number 1 pick being Moving. What a show. And Teddy Bear Daddy gets an award from you ❤️ BTW Great screen shots of him from the Show.
I LOVE THAT – “ugly bawl”. Total. Complete. Ugly Bawl. Red Sleeve Level if not more…
Oh thanks for movie mentions!!! I have not heard of The Night Owl! Sounds fascinating. And I do love Ryu Jun Yeol!!!
I have been circling Full Time Wife Escape Artist for some time even though everyone says good things about this Jdorama. But you have pushed me closer talking about the dance breaks 🙂 They did that in Hold My Hand at Twilight.
Hope you love Matchmakers like I did ❤️
What a great post!!! Thanks for much sharing your 2023 Kdrama watching. Loved reading your post ❤️
Thanks, JJ! I did enjoy KTL, but I was hoping for so much more from it. It was like eating cotton candy. I often watched with a goofy grin on my face, but you know how it is at end with cotton candy–your mouth is all blue and your hands are sticky and your stomach is a little sugar sick and you wish you had also eaten something a bit more substantial like a sub sandwich (or at least in addition to the CC. I thought the chemistry between LJH and Yoona was excellent!
Hmm. A KFG avatar! Sounds fun! Maybe! At this point the avatar will have to get in line. I already have 4 more in the queue. The first is about 1/2 way done. I have a long way to go. Something for me would be the last to get made.
I’m very early in the Matchmakers. I’ll have to give it some extra attention. With all the Christmas activities and the trip after, I’ve had a very busy January so far. It will be nice to get back in the regular routine.
You definitely should put the Full-time Wife Escape Artist at the top of your list. It is such a great show! I love the characters so much. I found it interesting too that the. Actors actually got married after they were in that show together, so as you can imagine, the chemistry is really good. I also really liked Hold My Hand at Twilight.
Miraculous Brothers was so interesting and I really enjoyed it, but it also has the whole murder mystery thing going. At least, it is part of the premise and does keep you guessing for a good while.
Borrow away for the things I like with photos. Nothing is patented here. I used all shows I’ve seen and liked for those pictures. I think the one you were referring to is the one from Reply: 1988. It’s the kissing one? Is that the one you mean?
Hello. Such a pleasant post to read through lotusgirl. Thank you. Congratulations about your new grandson 🙂 Also, wonderfully impressive knitting skills!!!
A fantastic set of favourites too. I watched seven out of those ten shows (A Time Called You, Doona and Black Knight being the three that I haven’t watched yet). Also loved all the awards and nice that you gave a shout out to Lim Ji Yeon for her role in The Glory. I thought her performance was the standout in that drama. My Dearest, Moving, Daily Dose of Sunshine and Twinkling Watermelon were stellar titles from 2023.
Glad that you liked The Good Bad Mother and A Kidnapping Day too. I loved the Father-Daughter relationship there. Extremely touching and Yu Na put in a telling performance.
Dr. Romantic is a franchise that I love dearly. Every single time, it is just so enhilrating. My favourite medical drama. The filming of the medical/surgical procedures are exemplary. Hope we get a 4th season with Seo Hyun Jin and the whole Doldam cast together.
As for the disappointments from 2023, some of them really do hit home. Castaway Diva and Crash Course in Romance being the most obvious ones. Castaway Diva could have been one of my all time favourites if it had proper focus and just focused on Mok-ha instead of delving into other edgy plot lines. The music was so brilliant that it was a huge letdown.
Same with Crash Course in Romance. Such an accomplished acting cast and the storyline in the second half was a massive downer.
With King the Land, I do have a more favourable impression. Despite being paper thin on drama, I found it to be a suitably lighthearted watch overall. It was super pretty to look at. Everything popped, the leads had superb chemistry and the music was very good. I prefer this to adding unnecessary subplots that change the tone of the story. My Lovely Liar also suffered the same fate. It had all the ingredients to be successful. An interesting premise, a cute OTP and a strong first half. Then the second mess in the second half with the murder plot line and whatnot just ruined the experience. As for Heartbeat, I did not even pick it up because I read about how it ended.
I was also strongly considering The Full-time Wife Escapist as my next drama once I finish up Kingdom. I have read the source material (the manga) for that and adore it to bits.
You should definitely watch The Full-time Wife Escapist! I adored it. The actors do such an amazing job with it. Now I should go read the Manga.
@lotusgirl – Already on it. 🙂 Two episodes (and the special) remaining. Going to complete it today.
It is reminding me as to why I loved the manga so much (The manga is one of my all time favourites and is still criminally underrated).
Yui Aragaki is wonderful as Mikuri. Such an adorable drama but deeply meaningful as well. The quirky nature of the interactions just takes the whole experience to another level. Joy to watch.
You are so fast at watching! Wow! It is very adorable and so meaningful! It is definitely a joy to watch!
It’s always about the hook. Once I get into a series, I tend to find ways to zoom through to completion.
Agree completely. So much charm to the series. Always appreciate it when a series makes you fall in love with the character cast.
Oops! That was meant to continue! I did really enjoy King the Land mostly because I enjoy both of the lead actors a lot, but too many things went off the rails in the second half and it lost a lot of its luster.
Castaway Diva and Crash Course in Love could have been two of my all time faves, especially CD. I’m just hunting for a Kmusical to love and this had the music part in spades! I wish the writers or producers or whoever felt the need for the “edgy plotlines” would have trusted that they Mok-ha story had more than enough to say if they took the time to delve into it. CCIL had great actors and so much potential! The daughter, Nam Hae Yi, is one of my favorite characters this year! Plus it was nice to have a romance between two 40 something adults!
Yu Na did such an amazing job in The Kidnapping day! It’s hard to believe how young she is.
Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed my post! I look forward to reading yours!
@lotusgirl – No problem. Good to know that you did mostly like King of the Land. It sort of achieved its objective in my eyes but maybe it could have done with slightly more tension to keep you engaged. For me, that was my first time seeing both lead actors.
Absolutely. I added more than 70% of the songs in Castaway Diva to my playlist immediately after watching it. Just couldn’t get enough of the music. So I am in full agreement. I so wish that the series just focused on Mok-ha. Just her relationship with the found family, Ran-Joo and her journey to stardom. That would have made the experience so much more streamlined.
As for CCIR, Nam Hae Yi was probably my favourite supporting character of the year too. Such an honest, kind and considerate girl. No need to say much about the leads. Jung Kyung Ho is arguably my favourite Korean actor so I would watch any drama that he’s in.
The Kidnapping Day had a very intriguing premise but it was the potential Father-Daughter relationship that made me pick the show up and Yu Na delivered a superb performance for one so young like you said.
Really did enjoy reading through it. 🙂 Thank you as well. Hope you can find a title or two to pick up.
I will definitely try the ones you suggested that I haven’t seen.
Sure. I hope you enjoy them when you try them out. 🙂
Hey Lotus!
Thanks for your post. You may have convinced me to watch a second episode of Doona! Like you, I found episode 1 grating, but unlike you, I have no problem with dropping 😁.
Also, I intend to get to My Dearest at some point. I will keep in mind that I should not drop it after ep. 1!
Also, the dolls you make are excellent. Your grandkids are lucky to have you for a bunch of reasons, but also because you are so good at crafts!
@Natalia My Dearest was a stellar experience. I was wowed by it from episode 1. I hope that you enjoy it too.
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy Doona! The more you get to know Doona and why she acts the way she does the more you like the show. At least that’s what happened for me.
My Dearest is an amazing show. I hope you will be able to jive with it.
I’m glad you like my animals! They are fun to make.
Yay for The Kidnapping Day!
Didn’t you just love the relationship of Kim Myeong Joon and So Jin Yoo and his daughter, Kim Hee Ae!
