It’s officially EOY season, which is when we look back on our drama years, and decide which dramas were worthy of our love, and which dramas we maybe shouldn’t have spent as much time on, as we did. 😁
As before, we’ll be seeing up to 2 guest posts per week, and this will unfold into January 2025, and my annual year-in-review will come out in early 2025, after all the guest posts have been published.
This way, by putting all our experiences together, we get a more wholistic view of Dramaland in 2024. Pretty great, yes? 🤩
If you missed our earlier posts, you can check them out here: Sean, Deni+JJ, Natalia, Ele, j3ffc, MC, Elaine, ABV.
Today, I’m pleased to announce that Diasporic Chick’s sharing her drama year!
Diasporic Chick’s been a part of our little Patreon community for a while, but rarely has time to hang out with us, due to all the other commitments she has, just living life.
So, this EOY post feels like a nice chance to catch up with what’s been going on with her, I feel like.
Thanks Diasporic Chick, for taking the time to share your drama year! 😘
If you’d like to read more of Diasporic Chick’s writing, you might like to check out her EOY post from last year here.
I hope you guys enjoy!

Diasporic Chick’s K-drama Journey
I am now five years deep into Asian dramas, which means I have at least an AA or BA degree in unrequited love and family tragic separation film tropes.
While I am quite satisfied nowadays with slice of life dramas – especially the adolescent school crush turned adult aged romances – I am struck by the continuous flow of creativity coming out of studios in South Korea and China.
Though my preferences veered more towards Chinese dramas this year, many Korean dramas rose to the top in my 2024 year end round up.
My top drama picks of 2024
Below are my top ten dramas this year, quite a binge worthy list if I might add.
1. Will Love in Spring (Chinese)
This was my first Li Xian movie, and I was quite struck by his ability to portray the role of a mortuary owner in a small rural Chinese village who falls for a former schoolmate, masterfully portrayed by Zhou Yutong.
The flirtation and hot and heavy romance scenes are tastefully shot, and there is a lot of philosophical content which I appreciated the ephemeralness of life.
Zhou Yutong steals the show though with her ability to portray a charismatic and career-driven beauty who does not allow her prosthetic leg to get in the way of her success.
I know many will critique the abrupt ending, but I enjoyed it immensely.
2. Family by Choice (Korean)
Being new to Hwang In Yeop, I was mesmerized by his portrayal in this remake of a Chinese series, Go Ahead, which I had watched a month or so prior to viewing this series.
His acting versatility and range of emotions is stunning, especially when compared to his already strong performance as second male lead in True Beauty.
Actress Jung Chan-Yeon was equally well cast and the two had really great innocent romance chemistry and steamy romance electric charge.
The entire cast was strong, and what I liked about this series was they reduced the number of crazy vengeful emotionally broken interfering mom scenes compared to the Chinese front runner.
3. Amidst a Snowstorm of Love (Chinese)
This series made me be all on board with the Wu Lei train. He consistently serves up a come hither gaze; Lei be lookin’ at his female lead the way I look at crab leg dinner specials at a seafood buffet.
This transnational sports and romance series, was shot both in a very cold Scandinavian town and Shanghai, with stunning backdrops and lots of snow, mountains, water, sunshine.
I laughed, I cried, and the supporting cast was gorgeous. And I learned some billiards/snooker lingo along the way.
4. What Comes After Love (Korean with Japanese cultural content)
Lee Se-Young the female actress who is cast as a Korean study abroad student in Japan is perfect in this role. Kentaro Sakaguchi is phenomenal, again with the eyes conveying a thousand words.
Beautifully shot, directed, scripted in six episodes.
The OST was extremely memorable and I have found myself listening to it on repeat while staring at the burning wood embers in my fireplace, wondering about the would-have, should-have, could-have of my study abroad youth.
And the cajones of the main male lead to document his love for the female lead in a novel that she would one day read and discover his true regret for their break up. There’s therapy for that! The scenes shot in Kyoto were just dreamy.
5. Marry My Husband (Korean)
Takes the revenge plot in fantastical and futuristic ways, with a side of hot son of a tycoon.
I am always a fan of Park Min Young (Rachel Park) and her rom coms, but this one was such a brilliant Korean-style Back to the Future with the tagline ‘I will expose you for what you are, you cheating cowardly sack of fermented bean paste.’
Na In-Woo was brilliant. The finale of the season was beautifully shot, and the OST was really good, especially the song Wounds of Time by Kim So Yeon.
6. The Story of Pearl Girl (Chinese)
Not only was I excited by this new series starring my favorite Chinese actress Zhao Lusi but also pleasantly surprised by new to me actor Li Yuning.
Enslaved pearl diver turned jewelry business owner, this was a non-traditional revenge plot part John Wick part ill-fated lovers.
The supporting male lead here deserves acknowledgement too as Tang Xiaotian was ever the doting benevolent hero.
If you can’t handle blood, this isn’t the relaxing series for your evening enjoyment but I really found joy and beauty in many of the slow burn romance and redemption scenes.
I wish Zhao Lusi the best of luck in her recent health setback and I can’t wait for her to rest, recover, and then come back stronger with a less terrible entertainment agency.
7. As Beautiful as You (Chinese)
This series introduced me to Xu Kai, whose work I want to see more of, and Tan Songyun who appears in Go Ahead. Tan is ever the spritely optimistic character in many of her female lead roles.
If you like workplace romance stories, this one is for you.
I tried to ignore the scheming and insecure second female lead vying for attention through deceit and underhanded dealings, but in spite of hard to believe plot twists, I still thoroughly enjoyed this series.
There are a few love in the kitchen scenes that make you go ummm.
8. Smile Code (Chinese)
I was drawn into this novel plot about a male designer starring Lin Yi (who is also in Everyone Loves Me) who gradually falls in love with comedian played by Shen Yue (made famous for her role in Meteor Garden).
Though you would not expect it, this show contains both humor, romance, and a unique focus on the clinical psychology of someone who is traumatized to the point of being unable to recognize one’s own basic human emotions; love helped him learn to feel again.
The supporting cast is great.
9. Love Next Door (Korean)
I really enjoyed two well known Korean actors cast in this rom com, starring Jung Hae In and and Jung So Min, and yes, two things can be true at once: adoration for the childhood friends turned lovers storyline, and a sense that the script did not play to the two main actors’ strengths, especially Jung Hae In.
Special shout out to the female lead character portraying an international student at my alma mater UC Berkeley.
10. Fireworks of My Heart (Chinese)
I’ll watch anything starring Yang Yang, and this action packed series depicts rekindled romance between a fire battalion captain and a hospital doctor rehashed from school romance.
Yes, the female lead’s adoptive parents being overbearing and staunchly against their relationship because he wasn’t good enough for her is a tired trope and yes, I counted at least a handful of times Yang Yang carried Wang Churan’s character in his arms out of the ashes of a disaster zone.

Sorry to be so late to the party (this is my mantra this week, both here at The Verdict, and at actual parties).
Looks like you had quite a high-quality drama year – and a pretty unique one. Thanks for sharing!
Yours is the first comment I recall here using the word “cajones”. And then to follow it with “There’s therapy for that.” LOL! But seriously, very interested in “What Comes After Love” for the Korea/Japan hybrid aspect and for Lee Se-young.
Have been sort of curious about “Love Next Door” but it’s been relegated to my B-list due to various comments around here (like KFG’s review). Glad to hear you liked it – another data point to consider. But what I really want to know is whether they convinced you that it was really Berkeley!!
Thanks for the enjoyable post.
You should definitely check out WCAL because of the film aesthetics.
And whether or not that was Green Screen Wheeler Auditorium at Berkeley or actual Berkeley I’ll leave that up to viewers. :-). LND was entertaining, and it made it to my top ten list perhaps because of the agony of waiting for two episodes to drop every weekend for those months last fall. Time makes the k drama heart fonder.
Enjoyed your EOY post although we have almost nothing in common. Your humor is definitely my style. We are only watching Korean dramas hence the lack of common ground. We also watch more older dramas than currently airing ones. Family by Choice is on my watchlist though and Love Next Door is a maybe. I do love Jung Hae In. He is one of my favorites so we will probably watch it. The reviews were so mixed over on Patreon so its nice to see it show up in your EOY.
May 2025 bring you more education so you can get your masters in unrequited love.
I liked all four of the main actors in Love Next Door. They could have been scripted with better lines and friends to lovers/hidden crushes story development. But can’t let perfect be the enemy of decent. Hahah.
Ah, so glad you have discovered Liu Yuning!!!!
He is firstly a great singer – such an instantly recognisable voice – and is literally on about one hundred and fifty OSTs!!! Yes, I actually counted!!! I LOVE HIM!!!
But, also, he is a lovely actor too and I did really enjoy him in The Story of Pearl Girl as well. I usually adore Zhao Lusi but I didn’t find her quite so strong in this one. Did you know they also starred together in The Long Ballad? They’re the second couple (after, ooh, Wu Lei and Dilraba Dilmirat!) and they totally steal the whole show. Honestly, Liu Yuning’s Haodu is super compelling and made me root for him all the way!
If you’d like other Liu Yuning recommendations, I may be your gal – I am, hehem, a little bit obsessed…
Anyho, thanks for sharing your loves of this year! xx
Many LY films/series, I’ve noticed, are on another app that I don’t yet have downloaded, but I’ll check out The Long Ballad as it’s been on my Lu Wei watch list for some time and it looks interesting. Zhao Lusi did seem to be navigating a tough rags (literally) to riches character in TSPG, and I think the ending on her part was strong, though <spoiler> albeit tragic. Thanks or sharing your enthusiasm about LY!
we didn’t watch much of the same shows, strangely I wasn’t into C-dramas much last year. But I’m glad you enjoyed many shows. Did you watch You Are My Glory? More Yang Yang goodness! (also I think Wang Churan is GORGEOUS – loved her in Are You The One with Zhang Wan Yi in 2024).
Wishing you a wonderful 2025 ahead!
You are My Glory was one of my favorites and still is! The dialogue/script is very well written and so is the OST!
I loved the premise of Smile Code, but with each episode I was literally forcing myself to watch it, so I finally gave up at episode ten.
If you liked Kentaro Sakaguchi in What Comes After Love you may want to try his drama Beyond Goodbye. He plays a heart donor recipient who gets emotionally entangled with the fiancee of the man whose heart he received. It was one of my favorite dramas this year for the way it explores the complicated emotions of everyone involved without making any moral judgements.
Hi @The Storyenthusiast, yes, Smile Code did have some slow moments, but perhaps I was committed to seeing what the there there was and was glad I stayed until the very end. I might have also watched this on a long road trip which helped the time go by quicker.
Beyond Goodbye is on my list and I can’t wait to see Kentaro in this drama and hopefully in many future series. I haven’t watched a ton of Japanese cultural films so I am definitely interested in seeing more that others can help recommend. Thanks for reading and commenting!
@Diasporic Chick – Thank you for the great write-up. Several titles that I really enjoyed are here, too. Will Love in Spring was one of my favourite dramas of the year (the leads are superb), Marry My Husband was a very engaging revenge drama, Love Next Door, which I enjoyed unreservedly, and Family By Choice.
I have As Beautiful as You on high priority and plan to check it out soon, too. Unfortunately, Amidst a Snowstorm of Love didn’t really work for me.
I saw that you watched Smile Code and liked Lin Yi. I highly recommend Love Scenery and Angels Fall Sometimes, which are two of my favorites, and I greatly enjoyed Lin Yi in both of them.
Wish you a wonderful 2025.
Hi ABV, thanks for a second year of reading my EOY reviews and your lovely comments. I can’t get past how Lin Yi looks real, real young, but has already been in so many series. The Chinese entertainment industry certainly has smiled upon him. I’ll add Love Scenery and Angels Fall Sometimes to my excel document and will let you know what I think!
@DC – You’re welcome 🙂
Yeah. He performs better in each drama he acts in, too. I thought his standout performance was the one in Angels Fall Sometimes. Oh! He was magnificent.
Hope you enjoy both of them. 😊
What a very fun read! I smiled and laughed throughout 🙂 I was happy to see we enjoyed many of the same Shows in 2024!!!
Have you seen Meet Yourself, yet with Li Xian? Another great performance from him, there. And he is in Flourished Peony right now doing a great job. Hope you see or have seen them both!
I am so thrilled you saw Go Ahead before Family By Choice!!! I loved Go Ahead so very much and relieved Family by Choice did such just to Go Ahead!
Ohhh yay! Someone else who loved Amidst a Snowstorm of Love. Sigh, Wu Lei 🥰 Speaking of snow have you seen Road Home?
*Squeal* I loved What Comes After Love, Too! But I never thought to listen to the OST for some reason. Let me light up my fireplace and let you know 🙂
Pearl Girl! I have 10 episodes left. Zhao Lusi is just extraordinary as you know. Those water scenes were unbelievable. Ohhhh, you have lots to catch up on with Li Yuning. Have fun watching his other roles, they are so worth it 🥰
I had heard about Smile Code and forgot about the Drama. Good to hear positive reviews as a reminder to check this one out 🙂 Same with Fireworks of my Heart. Totally forgot and I loooooooove Yang Yang. Starting that tonight!
Zombie Gril (Lee Se Young) for Best Actress in a tie with Zhao Lusi. Love. It 🥰🥰🥰
Three way tie for best actor. I totally support that !Kentaro Sakaguchi did a great interview with Lee Youngji and was adorable.
Thanks for a very enjoyable EOY! Hope you have a great 2025 Drama Year 🥰
Hi JJ it appears we do indeed have overlapping and similar taste in Asian dramas. Yay!
I did watch Meet Yourself and really enjoyed it, I had to rewatch his love confession scene in it, it was so sugary sweet. I’m really looking forward to more Li Xian films. I haven’t seen Road Home but literally added it to my excel document this week, because Tan Songyun is a female lead in it and Boran Jing seems aight.
What other Li Yuning films should I be on the lookout for? His voice is incredible both on screen and as a singer. < Middle aged mom swoon>
@DC – Total YAY for our overlap!!!
I still have 5 episodes of Meet Yourself left bc I didnt want it to end, lol.
Check out Brocade Odyssey and Sword and Brocade if you havent already for more of Tan Songyun !!!
As for Li Yuning, The Long Ballad is a MUST. He and Zhao Lusi are awesome together in that. And a Journey to You is wonderful as well
🙂
Here are his OST songs if you dont have this already? phl1rxd is a HUGE fan as well 🙂

Thank you for the playlist recommendation nand the Tan Songyun recommendations. So many are saying to watch The Long Ballad for LY, I think it’ll have to be my next watch.
@DC – I just binged Fireworks of my Heart 🙂 I had lots of fun. I, too, will watch anything with Yang Yang. Thank you!!!!
Going down a research rabbit hole, I learned Yang Yang had a dance career before his acting/modeling career. So multi-disciplinary and talented! I can even forgive his at times one dimensional acting as the stoic self-punishing by with holding his inability to love trope.
@Diasopric Chick – Oh yes! He is a BEAUTIFUL dancer 🙂 Have you seen this video of him dancing? Gorgeous lines

@Diasporic Chick – Oh! One more thing about Yang Yang and Fireworks of my Heart!
I didn’t catch that association just falsely assumed it was a cultural idiom not Easter egg but maybe it was! Thanks!
I truly enjoyed this EOY post and I found myself laughing quite a bit over the comments, some of which were seriously funny, especially the crab leg dinner mention. Let’s not forget your bean paste one as well. Hilarious – thanks for the many laughs!
Welcome to the Liu Yu Ning fan club! There is plenty of love for him around these parts. I have to check out Xu Kai in As Beautiful as You. I just need time to fit it in.
Let’s see what 20205 has in store! Happy New Year!
Hi phl1rxd, yes, if only I had more time to squeeze in for all the Xu Kai titles in my watch list. I’m glad you could tolerate my tongue in cheek blogpost humor. I often have these alone-thoughts while I’m watching the series and no real sounding board. That’s why I appreciate this unique and small but mighty k drama community so much!
