It’s officially EOY season, which is when we look back on our drama years, and decide which dramas were worthy of our love, and which dramas we maybe shouldn’t have spent as much time on, as we did. 😁
As before, we’ll be seeing up to 2 guest posts per week, and this will unfold into January 2025, and my annual year-in-review will come out in early 2025, after all the guest posts have been published.
This way, by putting all our experiences together, we get a more wholistic view of Dramaland in 2024. Pretty great, yes? 🤩
If you missed our earlier posts, you can check it out here: Sean, Deni+JJ.
Today, I’m pleased to announce that Natalia’s sharing her drama year!
Last year, I told you guys about Natalia’s forthright honesty, and this year, I’ll add to that by saying that Natalia’s therefore also quick to let a show know if it’s not working for her – by dropping it. 😁
Yes, Natalia has a bit of a reputation over on Patreon, as a serial dropper (pun kind of unintended, but turns out to be quite perfect, yes? 🤭), and I had so much run reading about her 2024 drama adventures, while prepping this post. 😁
If you like Natalia’s style and want to know what she thought about dramas last year, you can check out her post here!
I hope you guys enjoy!
~ KFG ❤️
Old friends, new friends, greetings.
Another year has passed; I believe it was my fifth year actively following the lovely (K)Fangirl and her passion for K Asian drama.
For those of you who don’t know me yet, my name is Natalia and I live in Athens, for now. Moving around has been kind of a routine for the past twenty years, but as years go by I feel that I am getting to old for traveling.
Simple (and easier) things please me more, these days.
And this applies also to the dramas I watch, I think. I used to like much more complicated, demanding stuff. Now I just want a comfort watch to unwind in the evening, most of the time.
2024 was the year I decided to keep notes of dramas I watch (or drop), and I did, by month.
So, my notes say that this year I have started watching 57 dramas, including Shogun on which I am torn whether it is Asian or not (Sean is pretty clear on what he thinks about that, cf. his own EOY post). Of those, I have completed 17, including Shogun.
Shogun was great, by the way.
Anyway, that means that I dropped less than 40 dramas (there are some I am still watching from those 57, like In Blossom, Blossom and Blossoms in adversity, I kid you not).
Less than 40 dramas means less than 70%. Which should mean (by my own serial-dropper standards) that 2024 was a great year.
It doesn’t really, though, because the shows I loved loved were not that many. Or were 2023 shows. Which brings me to my first section, on:
Honorable 2023 mentions
I started 2024 with 2023’s Oh No! Here Comes Trouble! (Taiwan). It was a great start. This show made it to my top 10 of all time and taught me one of the two Chinese phrases I never forget: “Bang wo!” – that is “help me”, that all the supernatural beings try to make the lead character do.
The other Chinese phrase I have learned after watching so many dramas is “Sha!” 🔪 but I bet this is not something that can come in handy next time I am in China. I hope.
I watched 3 more 2023 dramas this year (all three from China), and I liked them all, a lot.
Three Body was a fascinating adaptation of a fascinating sci-fi novel. I am so looking forward to the second part that I hope they will produce, at some point.
Fake It Till You Make It featured such a relatable, real-life OTP. Good leads, too.
And the premise of The Spirealm was excellent, even though the execution (in particular acting and voice acting) was so and so at times.
I recommend all three (the first and third only if you are into sci-fi or fantasy/horror, respectively).
I would thus like to give out two belated “best” awards: Best Drama, to Oh No! Here Comes Trouble! / Best Actress, to the amazing Wang Zi Wen, starring as Earth’s greatest villainess in Three Body, although Chen Jin, playing the same character, the fatidic Ye Wen Jie at her older age, was equally impressive.
But, let’s move to this year’s shows. Here’s a recap, by month:
January
I started 13 shows in January. I was convinced that this year I could beat Sean, Trent and ABV (all friends in Patreon, who seem to possess supernatural powers in drama-watching, along with our new friend, the lovely Deb).
Anyway, the best one among the dramas I actually finished (that is, a pathetic batch of 4 – not even close to Sean, Trent, ABV or Deb) was undoubtedly Knight Flower (K).
I hadn’t watched Honey Lee in anything before, but she had such spunk in her portrayal of a ninja widow, I just had to love her. Again, Sean has explained the reasons why Knight Flower, and Honey in particular, are such a good watch.
On the downside, boy was I disappointed by Dr. Slump (K)!
It was double cruel, actually, because episode 1 was instant love for me. Park Hyung Sik, Park Shin Hye, in high school attire (only for some flashbacks, though), I felt I was going home after many many years.
It was like Heirs, without having to put up with Lee Min Ho. But. Such a poor script and such poor directing of two so lovable actors. I am still mad. But I love you, you Parks.
February
February was a slower month. Four dramas started, two completed, not bad.
A shout-out to A Killer Paradox (K).
Short and effective, kind of lost it a bit in the middle, but Choi Woo-Sik saved it (he can save anything, like a true superhero), and Kim Yo Han had an impressive outing as Roh-bin. Too bad those two are not in Squid Game, they would have been so good in it.
On the other hand. I have long been a proud fanmom of Wu Lei (fanmom is fangirl for more mature girls with maternal, not romantic feelings towards young actors that they’ve known since they – the actors – were like 12).
But his outing as Lin Yi Yang in Amidst a Snowstorm of Love (C) was enough to momentarily turn me from a dedicated fanmom into a wicked stepmother. Momentarily, I said. I still love you, LeiLei.
March
Four shows again, but this time I only finished War of Faith (C).
Lots of positive points about this show. It keeps you at the edge of your seat, the acting is good, 30s Shanghai looks great (minus some wardrobe issues for westerners – those of you in Patreon may remember me nagging about some crinolines going around in nightclubs).
But then again, it has its fair share of propaganda and some pretty illogical stuff happens in the second half of the show. But still. Good enough. A special shout-out to the graphic designer that made this:
By the way, I ended up dropping Queen of Tears (K).
It wasn’t angry dropping like Dr. Slump. I just lost interest in all this extended cast that stole screen time from the show’s biggest assets, namely, the leading couple. Not that the supporting cast wasn’t good. I just didn’t care about what happened to them.
April
April was the month of “Sun Jae!!”
Lovely Runner (K) and its OTP stole my heart as it did to so many others. I didn’t even mind the serial killer trope which normally is a big no for me. So, I just have to post this here:
May
The only May show I completed was Ready, Set, Love (Thai).
I enjoyed it and appreciated its effort for social commentary (effort that completely failed in the other Thai drama I tried to watch this year, Master of the House). But everything was kind of green, from the acting to the writing to the directing.
Still, the most interesting May show for me.
June
I started four shows in June, completed 2. That’s 50%, like February, and I think that’s my highest success rate…
I loved Regeneration (C). It was my top 2024 show until November.
The idea of approaching the same character, Fei Ke (portrayed by Jing Bo Ran, doing a great job), through the eyes of a different person in every episode was brilliant, I thought.
Too bad the ending was obviously censorship-adjusted. But not to the point of canceling my very good opinion of the show.
The other show I completed was The Double (C). I found it addictively ridiculous. It was crazy successful – emphasis on “crazy”. Just watch one episode, you’ll know.
July
July I was on holidays, so six dramas – 1 completed, and that was The Spirealm mentioned above.
I dropped the well-beloved (by others) My Sweet Mobster (K) and Miss Night and Day (K) and I scoffed at how silly Snowfall (C) was – I was silly too, for expecting something more from a Chinese vampire show.
The other two are not even worth mentioning.
August
August was the one.
Are You The One (C) was love at first sight. Which is weird, because this is really not my type of drama. I guess I needed a well-made, light and fluffy love story with two capable leads, Zhang Wan Yi and Wang Chu Ran.
On the other hand, I was very disappointed by Love Next Door (K) and I angry dropped The Frog (K). I think I dropped that one the 12th time someone asked the “tree that falls in the middle of the forest” question. Burn that stupid tree.
September
October
I tried out 5 shows, I only finished one, Kill Me Love Me (C) and that was because one cannot easily take one’s eyes off of Liu Xue Yi. The show unfortunately made no sense in its second part.
November
And then came November and Mr. Plankton (K). I wholeheartedly recommend this show to anyone who hasn’t watched it.
I was sitting bored at an airport waiting for my delayed flight and I randomly pressed play. Next thing I knew, I had watched the whole show in 3 days.
A plot with no holes; a competent director; relatable characters; and amazing cast, main and supporting.
Also, although we know from episode 1 that Hae Jo, the character played perfectly by Woo Do Hwan, is dying, the show still managed to have its light moments and stayed well on track until the very end. I wish there were more shows like this.
December
Well, the only show I will finish (one episode to go) is The Trunk (K).
It didn’t start well – I angry watched the first 2 episodes during a flight thinking to myself “what is this nonsense” and regretting I hadn’t downloaded anything else.
But after reading the first two episodes notes in Patreon, I thought let’s watch a bit more, and eventually the leads won me over, though I am not sure whether it was the show that got better or the fact that Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun Jin are good, likable actors.
I can’t say the final verdict was very positive on the show though. To quote the Fangirl, the show tries too hard to look clever (without being stupid in itself).
I also have dramas I am now currently watching, like all those Blossoms, and Love Game in Eastern Fantasy, and I do mean to take up When The Phone Rings, at some point, although it is Squid Game time, so I might be busy for the next few days…
And now, it’s awards time!
Best Drama – you have guessed it, its Mr. Plankton. That includes best script and best director. Second best, Regeneration.
Most Comfortable Watch – Are You The One. We need more shows like this.
Biggest Disappointment – I think it was Love Next Door for me. Also, I wish I could have stuck with Queen of Tears. Someone tell me what happened in the end – not here, in Patreon’s deep dive!
Fastest Drop – I dropped Brewing love after ten minutes, or maybe less.
Biggest Stinker – That would be The Impossible Heir.
Best Actor – I am torn between Woo Do Hwan and Choi Woo Sik. I will go with the latter, because he had to defend a weaker drama and he still shone in it.
Also, a big shout-out to Li Xue Yi who absolutely nailed those scenes of physical weakness around episode 13 of Kill Me Love Me. First (and probably last) time I have seen this in a drama like that. I could feel his deep mortification and despair.
Best Actress – The lovely Miss Honey Lee.
My second best would be the equally lovely Lee You Mi (Mr. Plankton), with whom, I must say, I had fallen in love in just those ten minutes she was in Squid Game 1. I think I cried more for her there than any other in the cast.
Best Supporting Actor – once again, Oh Jung Se (Mr. Plankton).
Best Supporting Actress – I simply loved Lee El (Mr. Plankton). She’s one of the actors I wish I could watch more often.
Best OST – I will say Kill Me Love Me, but then again every time California Dreamin’ was on in Mr. Plankton, I couldn’t help but think that this is the greatest song ever written.
Oh, this is the opening title for Kill Me Love Me:
The OST includes many other remarkable tracks, and of course Liu Yu Ning, for the fans here.
Best Human Being – of course Heung, in Mr. Plankton. Such a sweet, unselfish person. If I can pick a second one too, it would be the foodie Empress in Are You The One.
Worst Human Being – I have to give this to the despicable Shen Yu Rong in The Double.
The actor, Liang Yong Qi, did great in portraying such a deep and complicated, but utterly awful, man. His was the best role in a drama that did not particularly excel in fleshing out its characters.
Most Badass Character – Definitely Cho Yeo Hwa, Zorro/Widow in Knight Flower.
Best Villain – I will say Zorro’s father in law. Such an evil person. However, this year there was shortage of really enjoyable villains.
Best OTP – My heart goes to Liu Mian Tang and Cui Xing Zhou in Are You The One.
Most Uncomfortable OTP – That just has to be the OTP in Lovely Runner. See picture above. Now imagine the neck pain. For their sake, I hope they didn’t have to shoot these scenes too many times.
The second most uncomfortable OTP but for completely different reasons would be the Emperor and Concubine Yang in Kill Me Love Me. Just look at this. What were they thinking.
Best Sleeper OTP – it just has to be No In Ji and Han Jeong Won in The Trunk. They started out totally unlikable and by the end I really rooted for their couple. I think this is thanks to the actors, but also to the …
…Most Slappable Character – Hands down, Lee Seo Yeon in The Trunk, played by Jung Yun Ha. Ms Jung does an amazing job making the audience really feel the urge to punch their tv screen.
She had strong competition by Su Ronqing in The Princess Royal (no hate on the actor but his character and how he portrayed him was probably the principal reason I dropped the show) and the Crown Prince Murong Xuan Lie in Kill Me Love Me.
Now, Kill me love me did not get an award in this category, but it certainly does in…
…Best “I ignore how problematic you are because you are so beautiful” Character – Of course, Liu Xue Yi as Murong Jing He. Just look at this:
Murong Jinghe is problematic due to the source material, but also to the awful writing in this show. Still, Liu Xue Yi wins the award for Instant Fangirl-Acquisition as well.
Top Highlander Award goes to the lovely Wu Jinyan: in The Double, she was buried alive and dug herself out of the grave. In Kill Me Love Me, she got buried under a bed of flowers and stayed dead for a week before waking up again.
Please, if you are too young to know who the Highlander was, don’t say a thing. Getting older by a year is already hard as it is.
Most Dramatic Drama Queen – I would think Princess Wan Ning in The Double, but Murong Jinghe also made an impressive raucous going in picnics and romantic boat trips with a corpse.
Most Heartwrenching Death – Yang Cai Wei in In Blossom, or rather the original actress playing her. Unfortunately, she swapped faces with Ju Jing Yi. Now, I actually find Ju Jing Yi cute, but her cuteness made her totally weird for this role.
Worst Title – Mr. Plankton gets that one. I saw the explanation of the title given in the show, but I still don’t buy it. I mean, this isn’t Bikini Bottom.
To conclude, Most When-will-you-be-on-screen-again award goes to Xiao Zhan because well, it’s been too long and I am kind of fed up with all the high fashion stuff. So there you go, my most anticipated drama for 2024:
In conclusion
So, dear friends. 2024 has come to an end! Thanks to the Fangirl for hosting my EOY review this year too and for providing us with such a toxic-free environment. And thanks to all of you for being such good mates.
To each and everyone, may 2025 bring you joy and happiness, just the way you want. And for the couple of you that had some rough times lately, my deepest, warmest wishes to get over them soon.
~Natalia

Just love your sense of humor! I have had similar thoughts about the casting of very tall ML with short FL (Lovely Runner), and it seems to happen frequently (She Would Never Know and My Demon come to mind) . I was also majorly disappointed in Love Next Door and Dr. Slump. Totally agree with comments about the flawed character who we loved to look at (Liu Yue Yi in Love Me, Kill Me)! Thanks for your recent chats with me on Patreon, and I look forward to more this year.
Such an entertaining post even if we don’t have too much common ground. I think I only watched Lovely Runner and Knight Flower of all the dramas you mentioned but I read it all and had a nice chuckle here and there. I’ll get to Mr. Plankton sometime soonish. It has received so much love over on Patreon.
Look forward to more chats over on the other side. Have a great New Year and many simple things of life. We took a long pause around traveling and are finally headed out again for our second year since COVID. We travel for pleasure and make real efforts to enjoy the simple things of the places we visit without too many schedules.
Natalia!!! 😍
Argh, “romantic boat trips with a corpse”!!!!! 🤣 It was mad indeed. Oh, and excellent shout out for the actually brilliantly acted episode of Kill Me, Love Me. I am definitely his fangirl for that alone – and also for his laconic posturing in the earlier episodes 😍
We certainly do agree on many Cdrama characters!
And, my god, thank you for the Duke Su GIF 🫠
Natalia, what a fun review! I’m impressed by how many dramas you started and also by how many you dropped! So many comments already, so probably not much to add. But I liked your term fan mom! I will borrow it from you😊
Hi Natalia, I loved reading your post so much!! You are economical with your words and very clear about what did and didn’t work for you. And somehow that all comes together in a way that is witty and very very funny!!
Laughed a lot at the following:
Sha!!! 杀 meaning “Kill!!” In Manadarin. Yes, please don’t yell that when you visit China!Queen of Tears – The way you just didn’t care about the supporting cast 🤣The Frog and the 12 ‘tree that falls in the middle of the forest’ question.Best Highlander award. I have heard of Highlander, never watched it, but I had to laugh at all the contenders for undead resurrectionists!Your “Most uncomfortable OTP” section! Most slappable character award! The “I ignore how problematic you are because you are so beautiful” award – good one!
I most definitely share your love for Lovely Runner (Sun-jae-ah!!!!) and Knight Flower, such a fun badass heroine who’s nice and kind! Love Next Door started off wonderful but I was disappointed in the back half. As mentioned in another comment, I’m loving Blossom (just Blossom) also!! (Side note: The Chinese title is Nine-Layered Purple Blossom, which they refer to in the Show. Why didn’t they go with this for the English title?!)
May I make a small pitch for a second chance for Brewing Love if you’re in the mood for a light sweet watch, I enjoyed it! I do like action comedy which there was quite a few bits of in the first 2 episodes but show does calm down and the OTP is really sweet and supportive of each other.
Natalia – what a delightfully hilarious year in review! Cracked me up throughout. Glad you loved Mr. Plankton and are mostly positive on The Trunk. I had exactly the same reaction to the first couple of episodes–‘what the ** am I watching?’. I am impressed with your ability to drop dramas—as a newb, I tend to hang in there (seriously, I watched all of Hwarang, although I managed to skip to the end of Kokdu as my love of Kim Jung Hyun just couldn’t sustain me ;-). My goal is to take a page from you and be more discerning in the coming year. Thanks for your thoroughly entertaining recap–I particularly loved your various “best ofs”, including Highlander LOL.
Deb, I said this before, I don’t know how you do it, where do you find the time and stamina to watch all these dramas … and without dropping any!
But: I have also finished Hwarang – I don’t know what happens in the middle, but the beginning and the ending, I watched!!
Natalia –I actually enjoyed some of Hwarang, despite the bad wigs, as long as Go Ara wasn’t on my screen :-). BTW, I made it through all of Tale of Arang last month, lol.
K, may I say that I am on the last episode of The Trunk and stalling… Will I drop it, after all???
It will be the second show I drop on the last episode, after Arang and the magistrate so long ago – and that was crazy, if you consider that I had watched 19 episodes by the time I ran out of steam!
Oh! I rather liked where the story ends, in the last episode, so.. give it a try, if you can?? My review will be out this Sunday! ❤️
@kfangurl — I am quite interested in reading your review of The Trunk. I haven’t gotten a good idea of what the show is like and what the ending means. I will wait for your review and then decide. I’m a huge fan of Seo Hyun-jin, so I want to watch it at least for her.
@ABV Seo Hyun Jin is excellent in The Trunk, I ended up really rooting for her character. And yes, I hope you’ll get a better idea how to adjust your expectations, once my review comes out!
@kfangurl – Awesome. That already increases my motivation to watch it. Your review of Love Next Door really helped me adjust my expectations and resulted in my enjoying the show a lot. So looking forward to this one, too. 😊
Natalia, I liked the last episode soI think you should watch it. I quite liked The Trunk, in spite of being confused in the beginning.
Yay, delighted to hear you enjoyed Mr Plankton as much as I did! It doesn’t seem to get as much love generally as Lovely Runner or Queen of Tears or other dramas this year, probably because of its problematic characters behaving questionably, but isn’t that what drama is all about?
Hi Marina Sofia (love both your names), (almost) our whole patreon community just fell in love with Mr. Plankton. I expect that you will see it nominated as best show quite a few times if you read the EOY posts to come!
To me, it was love at first sight and I wasn’t even expecting it. As I wrote, I sort of randomly pressed play. To some extent, it reminded me of It’s Ok to not be Ok and it turns out that the writer is the same. Have you watched this one? I whole-heartedly recommend it!
i came knowing i would love your post and i really really did. it was hilarious!
also yes Regeneration was SO good. it’s one of the better dramas i watched in 2024. when my EOY post comes out you’ll know which is my top but i really enjoyed Regeneration and Jing Boran.
Are You The One! Cui Xingzhou and Liu Miantang stole my heart too. i was pretty obsessed in the first half of the show. plus, i’m in love with Zhang Wanyi’s gorgeous voice.
ive not watched the Double but i feel like i need to, based on how incredibly crazy it sounds!
may 2025 be wonderful for us!
MC, I am so looking forward to your post – the suspense! Will it be Regeneration? Or were you seduced by something else at the last minute like I was? I sort of have a suspicion…
Zhang Wanyi does have a beautiful voice – I am so glad he never gets dubbed, that would have been a crime!
On The Double: you should take a look but I warn you, it is kind of ridiculous but with an addictive quality. I don’t regret watching it, but it is very, very flawed…
it’s hard to guess because it’s not necessarily a 2024 show, just shows i watched in 2024! but let’s hope you agree with me 😀
oh yes i heard The Double is a mess but an entertaining one. i’ll hop on when im ready for a roller coaster!
@Natalia – That was a lot of fun to read. The line that cracked me up the most was the one about “The Frog.” Still chuckling about that. They really went all out with the tree line. Witty and humorous as always.
Loved Knight Flower and Lovely Runner like most others. I also enjoyed Queen of Tears, Dr. Slump, and Love Next Door, all of which you were either disappointed by or didn’t finish.
I also had issues with Wu Lei’s character and Amidst a Snowstorm of Love in general. That was one of the shows I really disliked this year. A Killer Paradox was a waste of potential, in my opinion. Choi Woo-sik was really good, but that middle lull really killed it. It started off strong, so it’s a shame.
The awards section was fantastic to read. Still have Are You the One on my watchlist but I need a lot of motivation to watch a period drama. Also wanted to ask how Regeneration ends. I have that on my watchlist as well.
I have five days; perhaps I can still pick up Mr. Plankton to close out the year. Actually, I have time to watch a couple of short dramas. I’m wondering whether to pick up Squid Game Season 2 or wait a while. Other than that, Family Matters, Mr. Plankton, and The Trunk are the contenders. Unexpectedly, I managed to finish both Born to Run and Family By Choice the day before yesterday (27 episodes in two days), leaving me with some room to maneuver.
Thank you for the post and happy holidays. 😊 Hope you have a wonderful 2025.
ABV – regeneration’s ending was rather mid for me, plus the CGI felt a bit fake. but it’s still worth the journey!
@MC – Thank you. I do recall researching it before, but I don’t remember the specifics. I don’t mind bad CGI as long as the ending is satisfactory.
27 episodes in two days. See, this is what I meant by supernatural powers.
I say watch Mr. Plankton to close the year. Oh, and I have started Squid Game. Let’s discuss it over at Patreon!
On Regeneration: its ending is morally correct. It is not a bad ending, just too sanitized for my taste. But overall the drama was very interesting and well executed. Take a look when you have 20 minutes (in that I am persuade it you can squeeze it in your own time space, somehow!!).
My best wishes to you too, ABV. Let’s keep doing some quality drama-watching!
@Natalia – 🙂 Haven’t had the opportunity to use those powers much after September. Only managed it a few times this month. Hopefully, things are back to normal in January.
I plan to pick Mr. Plankton up tonight. Maybe even sneak in Family Matters too before the close of the year.
I’ll wait to hear your thoughts on Squid Game S2. Will wait a while before picking that up.
Noted. I was intrigued by Regeneration and almost picked it up a couple of times. I’ll try watching it.
Btw, I am quite interested in Blossom that just finished airing this week. So confusing with all the Blossoms this year. 😂
Thank you. Hope we have a great drama watching year.
Actually, change of plans. My brother agreed to watch Mr. Plankton with me, so I will start it tomorrow instead. I will finish it before the year ends, hopefully.
I am looking forward to hearing what you think of it,ABV!
@Natalia – You crack me up. I loved every minute I spent reading your review and laughing at every spot on comment you made 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You never cease to make me laugh in the best possible ways. 😂🥰
Loved it 🥰🥰🥰🥰
p.s. more later, I am to0 obsessed with Blossom right now….
Which Blossom is that?
Ha, I am kidding. I am sure you mean THE Blossom, the rebirth story. By the way, there’s another blossom show coming up…
JJ, I am at episode 7 of THE Blossom. Let’s discuss it in Patreon, I have things I want to talk about!
@Natalia – LOL! Right. So many Blossoms this year, but yes I mean THE Blossom. Another Blossom? Sigh…
YES!! Lets discuss on Patreon, I am already at Episode 27!!!! 7 more to go….
OMG. You are way too ahead for me to catch up… Do join the episode notes however, soon I think it will be episodes 4-8 and it will be lovely to discuss!
The upcoming drama is “Blossom in darkness”. There is also “The blossoming love”, sometime in 2025. I sincerely wonder what’s the craze with blossoms right now! It all started with Blossoms Shanghai – that I haven’t watched, by the way.
@Natalia @JJ Yes, next set of notes will be for E5-8, and because I took a break this week, that will be out next week instead, do join in the discussion, when the notes come out! ❤️
@Natalia, I’m inhaling Blossom (the rebirth story with Li Yun Rui and Meng Ziyi) also!!! Loving (almost) every moment of it, even though I disagree with a few of the plot points, the OTP is working really well for me and it’s well-written! I’m at episode 24 already I think but I will definitely chime in the episode notes!
@Elaine – I started a Spoiler section in Deep Dive for Blossom. I must know which plot points you disagree with. Please tell me over in the Deep Dive. Unless you already wrote them out and I missed them?
Im on Episode 27 half way through. Pressing play now:)
@Natalia – YES!!! I couldnt help myself. Had to pass the time somehow waiting for When the Phone Rings…lol.
Ok, Ill join the Episode notes for sure, but I started a spoiler thread in Deep Dive. I didnt say too much since I am so far ahead. Just enough to get the conversation started.
GAH ! So many Blossoms to fill our plate, LOL. Well, we have been somewhat lucky so far with the Blossoms, no?
I loved your review, Natalia (there can only be one 😉). For some reason, my iPhone decided to sync with my iPad just when I was about to finish up what I had written. So, I will need to start again – compose my thoughts elsewhere and then paste them here in the next little while😊
Sean, I knew you wouldn’t fail me with the Highlander reference!
Let me tell you a story: Last summer, my husband and I are on a beach on an island. It is a remote beach (45′ walk off the road, the last part very steep way down). Anyway, there are about 20-25 people on the beach. Suddenly, there is a strong gush of wind, and a couple’s sun umbrella or whatever that is called (parasol?) is carried away and gets tangled in some trees on the cliff right over the beach. So we all start trying to think how to get the umbrella down, a few try to climb, but it is too dangerous, and then a guy who’s there with his boat takes a rope, ties a fallen tree branch at its end and use this as a hook to hook the umbrella and get it down.
So the whole beach claps and hoorays, it’s a lovely moment, and then the umbrella owner says “let’s give an extra round of applause to MacGyver here”! And then there is this kid, in his early twenties, there with his girlfriend, who says “Who’s MacGyver?”.
And then the umbrella owner literally says “Kid, go find your own beach”. We all had a great laugh – minus the kid, of course, who didn’t understand anything in the beginning (but we were kind enough to explain to him that we didn’t really want him off the beach!).
I understand the MacGyver reference!!!! Hahah…
@Natalia
Very enjoyable read (but tbh kinda expected from you by now given how frank you can be) but I confess that I skimmed through all the C-drama parts because I haven’t seen any of them.
Now I just finished posting my comments on Shogun in Sean’s EOY post and your EOY post came up. And I am writing this comment from Tokyo to tell you that Shogun is an Asian (and Japanese) drama at best and Japanese will be upset if you tell them otherwise. Just that it got made in the West targeting the international market but the story is as Japanese as you would get. And good to know you liked it (and didn’t drop it….oops).
On Mr. Plankton – this drama definitely deserves all your high praise and awards. Just that you should also give the Best Actor award to Woo Do-Hwan – he deserves that much or more actually. Lee Yoo-mi deserves it as well. I will agree with you on the naming part – they did explain “Plankton” but I am not that impressed by that “beach scene” or the title. maybe the production team spent all their energy on giving us an amazing drama and finally they were all too tired and just picked some “meaningful title”.
Knight Flower was fun and Hanee Lee is well Hanee Lee. I have seen her 2 other K-dramas before Knight Flower and was happy to see her finally get her due. I also saw her in person in Dec and again I have written on that in Sean’s EOY post.
(And you are too brave to write your thoughts on the biggest disappointment list – I haven’t seen them and won’t ever as romantic melodramas are not my thing but I do know that these dramas were well loved in the Patreon community……oops)
And I agree that as we get older we just want simple and easy things in life. Having lived in 3 continents/4 countries and constantly travelling for many reasons – I totally get the “travel crazy” part. Hopefully you get your good breaks for yourself in between all that as much.
Take care and Happy New Year 2025. Catch you on the other side in Patreon.
Princess, so cool you are in Tokyo – I haven’t been there since 2021!
My hesitation on Shogun lies with the fact that my husband claims that although it has captured the Japanese spirit well, “it would have been different if it had been a japanese series”, whatever that means (probably it means it would not be as good, but let’s not tell him that!😉).
Anyway, I will see you in Patreon – but do give two of my Chinese shows a chance: Regeneration and the fluffy Are you the one. 😘😘😘
