Review: Welcome To Samdalri

THE SHORT VERDICT:

I wouldn’t say that Show is particularly inventive, but I liked this one a lot anyway.

Show is a healing story that includes romance, friendship, family, a search for identity and purpose, with beautiful Jeju Island as a backdrop, and a very pleasant OST to score it all.

Our cast is very solid, but the standout for me, was Shin Hye Sun, whom I felt delivered some particularly outstanding scenes.

A little tropey, yes, but Show’s boatload of heart more than makes up for it.

Review: The Worst Of Evil

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Not as dark as typical crime noir, and yet, definitely darker than your average kdrama, this show sits in a pretty niche space, in terms of its appeal, I imagine.

It’s gritty, violent, bloody and full of moral dilemmas, and at the same time, it’s also laced with a kdrama sensibility, with some very recognizable tropes in play.

Ji Chang Wook and Wi Ha Jun are two big reasons to give this one a try, and I thought they both did well, in their roles.

I personally found this much more watchable and engaging than I’d first expected, and I don’t even really gravitate towards crime noir.

I think that if this show works for you, it’ll really work for you – but if it doesn’t, you’d probably not like it very much, and the only real way to find out, is to dip a toe in. 😅

Review: If You Wish Upon Me

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Show is warm and well-intentioned at its core, and does deliver a good amount of poignance and feels, when it leans into this aspect of its personality.

At the same time, Show also has a melodramatic side, and while it is relevant to the story, and therefore necessary for Show to give it time in the spotlight, I do feel like Show goes a bit ham with it, especially in its late stretch.

That said, Show manages to end on a poignant, feel-good, thought-provoking note, despite some treacly tendencies, which is a solid accomplishment on its own.

Your mileage is likely to vary, given Show’s mixed reputation. (Hopefully, this review will help you figure out whether this one’s for you.)

Review: The Sound Of Magic

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Show’s pretty ambitious, in that, not only is this story about plausibly real magic, this is also quite possibly Dramaland’s first attempt at an actual musical drama (versus dramas that have musical numbers in them).

As with all first attempts, there are things that Show does well, and things which Show could have improved on, in the interest of being better and more cohesive, overall.

Choi Sung Eun is excellent as the heart of this story, and the rest of the cast puts in brave and  reasonably strong performances as well, but I do think that both the story and the music could have been better managed.

Not amazing, but not bad, overall.
