You guys. When this show was announced as a spin-off of No Gain No Love (review here!), I was honestly sooo excited.
Not only is this whole spin-off thing rarely done in kdramas, this would also mean that we’d see Lee Sang Yi in a lead role!
I’ve had a soft spot for Lee Sang Yi for some time, so this was a must-watch, for me.
And now that I’ve come out the other side, I’m here to tell you guys allll about it. 😁
MANAGING EXPECTATIONS / THE VIEWING LENS
I’d say that managing expectations is pretty important with this little show.
Honestly, I’d had very little idea of what to expect, coming into this one, and only with the trailer, posters and other stills that were released ahead of Show’s premiere to inform my expectations, I’d imagined that this show would be on the spicy side of things.
I mean, just look at this second poster that the production released:
It creates a certain vibe and expectation, yes?
Well, I’m here to let you know that this show is a lot less spicy than its promo materials suggest.
So think fun and funny instead – with more eventual sweet, than spice. 😁
Also, because our story is short, don’t expect anything to be all that well fleshed-out. For the record, I do think that Show does a decent job, considering its time limitations.
STUFF I LIKED
1. Getting to see Lee Sang Yi in the romantic male lead space
Ha. No prizes for guessing that this was a biggie for me, since this was one of the key reasons that I was interested in this little spin-off, to begin with.
Honestly, it feels like we’re witnessing an important milestone in Lee Sang Yi’s acting career, like he’s graduating into romantic male lead territory before our very eyes.
Plus, let’s not forget that he’s playing a bit, in the shirtless, sexy space, and even singing a track for the OST; isn’t that all very Romantic Male Lead stuff? 🥲
2. Han Ji Hyun as Ja Yeon / Yeon Seo
Between our two leads, I was admittedly less enamored of Han Ji Hyun, but I thought she did a solid job of the role.
In particular, I thought she was quite bold, leaning into the spicier moments, as Seo Yeon Seo.
3. The idea of Ja Yeon trying to figure out the rules of her story world
I thought it was quite fun to watch Ja Yeon working to get a sense of how her story world worked, while trying to find a way to outsmart the system.
It amused me, that even though she’s the author and therefore creator of this world, she has no real control over it, and is basically at its mercy.
Like, whoops, why would you write your story that way; see how you’ve basically trapped yourself..? 🤭😅
4. The actual workings of the story world [BROAD SPOILERS]
Some of the details around this tickled me, like the way the bus only actually goes to the hospital, because that’s the location of the entire episode, and the way the same dude (Kim Yong Myung) cameos as every side character that’s needed, from bus driver, to doctor, to taxi driver, to store manager.
In a similar vein, I thought it was rather cute, that every actor / celebrity in this world looks like our male lead – because he’s the most handsome man in that world.
I was inordinately tickled by this. 🤭
Other details, like the way Yoon Seo (well, Ja Yeon) suddenly finds herself in a new location, as demanded by the events of the episode, reminded me of 2019 drama Extraordinary You.
Overall, I thought that writer-nim did a decent job of teasing this out, given Show’s short running time.
THOUGHTS ON THE ENDING [SPOILERS]
Honestly, for the duration of our first episode, I’d felt a little perplexed, because of the way Ja Yeon was fighting on the inside, while her body, as Yeon Seo, was basically programmed to engage in sexy scenes with her male lead Ha Jun – who now looks like Gyu Hyun instead of Yeo Ha Jun (Lee Yoo Jin).
For one thing, it felt wrong, like she was being forced into doing stuff that she didn’t want to do, though I told myself that in this fantasy setting, where she’s writing the goings-on, it doesn’t really matter so much. 😅
For another, her mortified, grossed-out voiceovers took all the heat out of her skinship with her new male lead, Kang Ha Jun (and therefore, all the heat out of the scenes featuring Lee Sang Yi 😅).
Happily, by the middle of episode 2, she manages to convince Kang Ha Jun that she really is the author of the story, Nam Ja Yeon, and this changes a lot of things.
I was honestly quite pleasantly surprised by the immediate poignance that this gives us, as Kang Ha Jun goes through an instant identity crisis, because he’s devastated that the love that he feels for her isn’t real – and that he himself isn’t actually real. Aw. 🥲

And then, I thought it was sweet and affirming, that Ja Yeon shows him that he, and this world that they’re in, are all real – because they’re all a part of her.
I thought that was a very nice angle in which to approach it.
After that, I thought it was very sweet that Kang Ha Jun would love Ja Yeon for real; not because he’s written to do so, but because he really does love her.
I’m not too certain of what it means, that Ja Yeon and Kang Ha Jun gain more autonomy as our story goes on; perhaps it’s because Kang Ha Jun becomes self-aware?
That moment on the hospital roof, where Kang Ha Jun tells her that she’s the reason he exists, feels so full of heart and meaning.
Like, yes, she did write him, and that’s why he exists, but also, with his newfound autonomy, he’s choosing to love her, and he’s pledging himself to her, to always be next to her, and it’s all very sweet. 🥰🥲
..Which also, in turn, gives a really nice added layer of meaning, when Ja Yeon then wakes up in her real world – and Gyu Hyun’s right there, thus fulfilling Kang Ha Jun’s promise. 🥲
Aw. What a sweetly poignant ending, yes?
And also, what a nice additional layer of context to how Ja Yeon’s view of Gyu Hyun began to change, in our principal story. ❤️

THE FINAL VERDICT:
Cute and fun, with some nice layers of sweet poignance.

surprise, watched this for fun despite not watching No Gain No Love just for Lee Sang Yi, who i am enjoying nicely in Good Boy! this was a cute and sweet little show (plus Lee Sang Yi is also handsome, hahah). it did have nice layers of warmth and poignance despite its short runtime and was funny to boot. so i’m glad i watched it!
Fellow Lee Sang Yi lover here and I literally squealed when I saw he was the “romcom male lead” and checked all the boxes that came with the title OST track included! I feel a bit cheated because I was ready to see sexay LSY in all his glory but again, it’s a romcom so NOPE! the fact that they kinda pointed this out with the whole “15+” rating and Ja Yeon ranting about the lack of “passionate scenes”, summed up my sentiment of the lack of spice in this spin-off rofl Idk if he has work lined up rn but I hope is a romcom and as a lead character! (if it’s a sexy drama, even better!)
Aw, I feel you Adonn (btw, welcome to the blog!).. I was disappointed too, when I realized this was just 2 episodes instead of a full series. 😭 That said, I did enjoy this little 2-episode nugget reasonably well, so I’m glad that it exists! But yes, hopefully he’ll get to be a romantic male lead in a full-length drama soon! His next project is Good Boy, and he’s listed as one of the main characters. It looks to be an ensemble sort of deal, so it’s unclear if he’ll have a loveline in the show. But I’m looking forward to it nonetheless!
@kfangurl – Thank you for the review. Admittedly, I was also very interested in this. Just one quick question: judging from your review, it doesn’t seem like one has to watch No Gain No Love to enjoy this? Am I right in assuming so? If this can be watched as a standalone, I might give it a shot.
@ABV – You can watch it as a stand alone. You might miss some insider references, but it holds its own as a full (albeit short!) drama experience.
@Leslie – Noted and thank you for the information. Really appreciate it.
@ABV Sorry for the late reply! Leslie’s right; this does manage to stand alone as a mini drama.
Maybe it might be helpful to know that our FL, Ja Yeon, has a huge crush on her high school friend Yeo Ha Jun, and that’s why she uses him as her inspiration, when writing the ML for her spicy web novel.
That’s why she’s horrified when she realizes that the version of the novel she falls into, features a different ML – one who looks just like the online hater who’s been identified as the person leaving hate comments on her web novel.
I hope you’ll have fun watching this little spin-off!
@kfangurl – No problem. I’ve been watching dramas at a snail’s pace this month because of how busy I am at work. Sometimes just an episode or two a day. This is the busiest month of the year due to annual filing deadlines, and I even have to work during the weekends. So something short like this would be nice to pick up.
I’ve been waiting for a proper Lee Sang Yi male lead role for a while now, so I’ll probably be able to watch this by the end of the month since both Leslie and you have reassured me.
Thank you for also providing some background context to help me understand the show better. I’ll let you know what I think of it. You certainly seemed to like it better than No Gain No Love.
@ABV Bummer about such a hectic work schedule, but thankfully it’s just a once a year sort of thing? 😅😅 And yes, it does feel like this little spin-off would work well for you, as a pick me up during a busy time! And yes, I did end up liking this more than NGNL, interestingly enough! ❤️
PS: Hang in there, you’ll get through the busy season soon!
@kfangurl – Yes. All of us in our firm are in the same boat, and it’s like this in October every year. We just have to make it to the end of the month.
I will watch it towards the end of next week. I should be done with Mouse by then. I’m not sure if anyone in our little community has watched Mouse, but it’s one of the most brutal, complex, and gruesome murder mysteries out there. I’m crawling to the finish line with four episodes left.
I’m also watching a lighthearted Chinese drama called Hello! I’m At Your Service (For Miles Wei and Xu Lu), and I have five episodes of that left. I’ve only finished four other shows this month. My mood has been all over the place, and I don’t feel like watching anything after work. 😅
Thanks for the information and encouragement. 😊
@ABV I haven’t watched Mouse, and what you describe sounds too intimidating for me to attempt, honestly. 😅😅 Brutal and gruesome sound like too much for me. 🙈 Sounds like balancing it out with something light is wise!
I can understand being too tired to want to watch anything.. it’s probably wiser to just prioritize rest, and come back to your regular drama schedule, once things have settled down. Hang in there!! ❤️
@kfangurl – I was trying to look at the community spreadsheet, and it doesn’t seem like anyone has seen it. I’ve been meaning to watch it for the longest time. I watched the first two episodes on five different occasions. Finally, I went all in this time. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart. It’s a convoluted and twisted story with extremely complex characters. It’s highly acclaimed, and rightly so. The two leads, Lee Seung Gi and Lee Hee Joon, are fantastic. Lee Seung Gi especially. I had never seen him before this.
Hello! I’m at Your Service is a watch purely for the leads. There’s nothing else to it, honestly. But yes, these two shows go well together.
Yes. Good advice. Thank you. That’s what I intend to do. I’m just playing some casual games or browsing on my phone before bed. Or I just rewatch drama scenes that I liked. Yesterday, I watched some scenes from Happiness.
Oh! If you’re looking for something light with heart, try oldie-but-goodie My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. It’s Lee Seung Gi with a ridiculously charming Shin Min Ah! Would be fun to unwind to, I do think! We did a group watch some time ago, so notes are available if you feel like some virtual company! It’s on Netflix for me. ❤️
@kfangurl – Very nice choice. I was thinking of that just yesterday when I looked at his other roles. I will probably pick that up soon, like maybe at the beginning of next month (so that there’s a short gap after Mouse). Since No Gain No Love didn’t work out, maybe I can get some Shin Min Ah goodness here.
It’s available on Netflix for me as well 😊 And yes, I’ll go through the notes too. I checked the ending just now. I had it on my watchlist too. Thank you. 👍🏼
Oh! Haha, hi5, ABV! Great minds think alike! 😁 I’m pretty sure you’ll enjoy it when you get to it, especially since you like both leads. ❤️
@kfangurl – Yes. 😊 I definitely like both leads.
@kfangurl – I just watched Spice Up Our Love and quite liked it. The only downer was that it was so short. I honestly wanted more. I was quite taken aback that Lee Sang Yi wasn’t in the opening episode for more than 20 minutes.
I went back to your No Gain No Love review and read everything about these characters there because I wanted to know what actually happens to them in the main story. Their story could have been a drama in and of itself.
I loved the post-credits scene showing some behind-the-scenes footage and Lee Sang Yi singing the OST “A World For Us.” It was an excellent song.
@ABV Oh, I’m glad you enjoyed it!! Yes, it is short! I’d originally thought we were getting a full series spin-off for this couple, and had been super excited about it – and then I felt suuuper disappointed to learn that we were getting just 2 episodes. 😭 So I can understand why you went and read more of their story, in my NGNL review! 😁
All in all, I’m still glad they made this, despite its short length – it’s still Lee Sang Yi getting to play in the romantic male lead space, so I count it a win! 🤩
@kfangurl – Yeah. I just had half of Sunday off, and I added all sorts of shows to my currently watching list to test them out on Saturday night. If You Wish Upon Me, Bravo My Life, and My Girlfriend is a Gumiho. I’m going to watch all three of them shortly. My first priority is Bravo My Life, which is a long family drama. I haven’t watched one of those in a while. I completed Hello! I’m At Your Service and only have the finale of Mouse left. It’s a whopping hour and forty minutes long, so I should be done with it in a day or two.
I did want to watch something short, and this was perfect for me. I do wish that it was at least six episodes so that we could have seen more of the two together. Maybe a more contextual connection to the main story in No Gain No Life. Even if it was recounting the events from there, they could have fleshed out their relationship more and shown different perspectives.
So yes, it was disappointing to have only two episodes. I was half tempted to see their full story in No Gain No Love, but I’m going to hold back for now. Reading your review was enough.
The major positive is, as you said, Lee Sang Yi as a romantic male lead. This is hopefully the beginning for him in this space.
@ABV Oh yes, a 6-episode length would have been nice, I think.. That would have allowed everything to be more fleshed out, and give our leads more room to play as well. I don’t really think it’s necessary to watch NGNL for this couple’s full story, unless you approach it with a ready finger on the FF.. That way, you only get what you want, and skip over the stuff that don’t work for you?
PS: Sounds like you’ve got your drama plate all sorted for the next little while! Happy watching!
@kfangurl – For this show, that would have been an ideal length. The leads seemed stoked about their roles, so it would have been nice to give them more time to show their skills. They seemed to have a lot of fun based on the behind-the-scenes footage.
I agree. That’s why I’m going to refrain. I don’t want to do a fast-forward watch.
Thank you. My mood is all over the place, so I don’t know what I’ll feel like watching on a given day, which is very unusual. It’s mostly because I don’t have time to binge as I usually do. That’s why I have a decent spread of choices depending on my mood.
