Stories from the community: JJ’s story!

If you didn’t already know, we’ve got a special series to kick off the new year! Guests posts, by patrons on Patreon, sharing their personal drama stories, mostly around the topic of “How did you get into dramas?” and “What does your first drama mean to you?” – with flexibility to go off on personal tangents, of course. 😁 Feel free to share your stories too, in the comments!

This guest series is MC‘s brainchild (thanks MC! 😘), and you can read more details, and check out her inaugural post here, Sean‘s post here, and Shahz‘s post here. After today’s post, there will be five more guest posts by mystery guest writers, whose identities will be revealed when their various posts go live. Woot! 🥳

Today’s post is brought to you by JJ, whom, as you might remember, is Shahz’s bestie around these parts. 😉 Perhaps it’s got something to do with that bestie connection, that JJ also prepared this post, while feeling somewhat under the weather. As (I think it was) j3ffc – whoops, turns out it was Merij! – who put it, are these two even two separate people? 😁😂

Thank you for digging deep for this, for us, JJ. LOVE YA. ❤️

I hope you guys enjoy!

~ KFG ❤️

Hey Guys!!! Its me again !!!!

Are you ready to do this? Are you ready for total lack of punctuation? Spellng mistakes? Run on sentences galore? Hyperbole? And most importantly lots of Kdrama Love! Well, if you are, let’s do this!!!! And if not, go read Trent’s Monster Baby. 😊 He knows all about punctuation, and man, does he know how to use a semicolon!

Many thanks to MC for the wonderful idea for a Mini Series on our gateway dramas and some of our all time favorites dramas. If you have not had a chance, make sure you swing over and read MC’s inaugural post on this mini series. She wove a beautiful tale. 🥰

And to our fearless generous leader, KFG, many, many, many thanks AGAIN for allowing us to put our words on her beautiful space. So kind of you. Thank you so much! 🥰🥰🥰

What was your gateway drama and why / what it meant to you?

YAY! I finally get to talk about Sci Fi and Fantasy Kdramas ad nauseam! 🥰

I did touch on my gateway drama being Bride of Habaek (BOH) in my post about my favorites for 2021, so excuse the repetition and indulge me, as I am so very happy to discuss this little gem again more with all of you.

How did I find BOH? Well, Netflix suggested the Show to me after I finished the Netflix Series – “The Witcher,” which I found a tad too dark for my taste, even if it was a true fantasy Show and had Dragons.

In my opinion, so much Fantasy and Sci Fi has gone far too dark and horror and lack of hope for my taste, AND I have been a true Sci Fi Fantasy Fan for YEARS. Years!

I am not new to this rodeo at all. It’s my wheelhouse and where I prefer to hang out at all times. But my favorite genres  had started to wear me out over the years with all the violence, bad guys winning and the heroes mucked in grey zones, and total absence of heroes. Ugh. Is it that hard to have Puppies and Unicorns, People? Really, is it too much to ask? 😤

So back to this Show from Netflix called Bride of Habaek. Yes, of course, my brain went Bride of Frankenstein- “Its ALIVE!!!!” Whose wouldn’t, right?!!? 😂😂 😂 Gosh! I really do love to digress constantly 😂

I peeked at this Bride of Habaek and I think my brain literally short-circuited from the opening introduction, with the music (it’s always the music, people, always. Ok, except for Hospital Playlist, but other than that, it’s always the music) woven in with the images.

Gods? Men with long hair in robes? Another World? Mythology? Gorgeous vibrant sets? What am I watching? I still love the opening introduction to this day. And no, I am not telling you how many times I have watched this Show. Nope, not gonna. Ok, I’ll say I have seen the whole Show without Fast Forwarding (FF) more than five times, but that’s all you will get out of me. 🤭😇

Back to my short-circuited brain, as the Show began with an opening gorgeous wide lens shot of the sand and water with the sun setting, and I am thinking, am I watching a movie? What is happening here? And then, the camera settles on a man and a little girl having a conversation about another world and I am hooked.

More, please. What world will we be traveling to today, thank you very much. Sign me up for Sci Fi Fantasy Airlines, please. I am all buckled in and ready to go. 🛫

And then OMO a Humpback Whale is on my screen. Hello Fantasia! Ok, so would I have preferred a dragon, of course! But a Humpback Whale, gorgeous creature moving so beautifully through the air. I’ll take it! What more do ya got for me, Show?

Well, we have this wonderful opening with mythology being explained about the World of the gods, but then, we cut to a woman standing on a bridge with a red coat holding a white rose with a beautiful song playing.

What? What just happened? Hello, Whiplash! What happened to my mythology and gods and the other world? Did I blink too long and miss something? Uhhhhh… And then woman in the red coat is in the water! What? Say it with me, “Whiplash”.

Oh! Perfect moment for a total let me digress comment 😂

This was my first introduction to the beautiful tank work Korean Dramas do so well. Beautiful underwater scene (however, Bossam sure takes the top spot for an incredibly gorgeous underwater scene) with the woman in the red coat in the water. Brain trying really hard to catch up and failing miserably even if we are in my Fantasy Wheelhouse.

And then Hello Whiplash again we are BACK with the gods! What are you doing to me, Show? Can we please stick to one world for a moment, so I can find my fantasy footing? I mean, I am good and in the right wheelhouse, but Hello can we have some longer consistency phlease?

And then Whiplash ONCE AGAIN; we are now seeing the woman who was on the bridge, then in the water, and now in her office as a psychiatrist. Huh? Show, WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO ME???? 🤪🤪🤪

And yet, I kept watching. 🤔 Ok, so maybe I was waiting for the gods to return and that other World. 🤩

And then, all of a sudden (ok maybe 5 or 10 mins later) a naked man (god) fell from the sky onto our leading lady (Hello Terminator!) And I thought, ok, I am in. Who wouldn’t be at this point, right? I am not alone here, am I? 😬

I bet everyone thought I would include the screen shot of this scene I just mentioned. Not gonna happen. You will just have to go watch BOH to find it! 😇

And while watching the naked man fall from the sky was fun and all, I want to mention how our Female Lead really had my attention from the opening bridge scene. She was gorgeous and so believable in that moment, even though I had no clue what was going on, as one minute she was on the bridge, and the next she was in the water. And then whiplash to being in her office. She made me take notice.

The Show’s appearance is so vibrant with colors. So many primary colors in the beginning and just the scenery and each world we saw. Everything felt alive and bold and beautiful, and just rich with detail, color, and life. And after watching the dark and dreary Witcher, my brain was saying “Yes, please, more. Keep going. Lets see how this goes.”

Funny enough,  I found myself laughing at so many of the lines, set ups, situations, and characters, and comedies are just not my thing. However, humor I love, and this Show kept infusing the humor at these different twists and turns that I found myself laughing out loud many a time.

Of course, so much was silly, but I was totally having it and looking forward to more of what Show wanted to serve up. The “Blow Up Castle” on the island always makes me laugh even if it’s completely ludicrous and would make KFG roll her eyes. And, I, unapologetically, LOVE IT. 😂😂😂

Sniffle, KFG never got into this show even though I tried to promote Bride of Habaek heavily to her in an email exchange. I forget I am dealing with a pro of Kdramas while I am the novice, coming in saying, OMO you have to watch this show.

Alas…. I am not sure if anyone else over on Patreon has seen this Show? Maybe it’s only me? Don’t tell me….sniffle. 😢

What I will tell you now is this Show has my most  favorite ending lines of any Kdramas I have seen in the past year. I am not sure what the original Korean says and I constantly complain about Netflix’s Subs, but these English Subs works for me quite well. I don’t think Shahz will be surprised about why I love what the Show had to say at the end. 🥰

“People can survive anything with the strength that they have.
But life
would be better with love, of course.“

❤️❤️❤️❤️ ❤️

Well, there you have my story around my gateway drama to this fantastic world of Kdramas.

Did I convince anyone to watch Bride of Habaek? Or at least, peek at BOH? Phlease say YES! Or please let there be someone else who loves this show as much as I?!?! If not, that’s ok (actually, I am straight up lying here 😂 as its soooo NOT ok 😭). Someone else has to love this Show, too. Shahz? Sniffle….

Oh, and did everyone think I would end my gateway drama and NOT talk about Bride of Habaek’s OST?!!! How could I pass on talking about BOH’s OST?!!!!

Bride of Habaek OST is the first Kdrama OST I ever purchased, and I listened to the entire soundtrack for weeks. Weeks! Which probably turned into months. 😬

The original OST is 11 songs, but most people post only six songs for some reason. I suggest the full OST, of course 🥰

Opening Title Song – Hello Awesome Intro

And this one just makes me smile

Two of my emotional faves off the OST

And here is the Full OST 🤩

Well that wraps up the awesomeness of Bride of Habaek! And yes, I rewatched this one while working on this post and loved my umpteenth rewatch. 🥰

What are your most memorable or favourite dramas and the stories behind it?

After watching Bride of Habaek, I rolled right into The King: Eternal Monarch and the World stopped. Literally.

Well, ok, so that’s a ton of hyperbole, but had to emphasize how much I love TKEM and it makes me so sad that TKEM did not do well in Korea AND people are pretty much split about this Show. Ugh. WHY? Don’t tell me. Ugh. Really, don’t. Please…..

Once again, sniffle, KFG wasn’t a fan of another Show I LOVED. I mean looooooved.  Sniffle. Insert Ugly Cry here. 😭😭😭

Buuuuuuut, her sister loved the show like I did and thought the writing was brilliant, just like I did. And my Sci Fi Buddy, Adrian, loved the Show as well, and he, too, thought the writing was brilliant. Sooooooooo, who knows why it works for some of us, and not others.

Shahz started this show with much trepidation from both of us if she would like the Show or not. And Score! She has been loving TKEM so far. YAY, ME! Thanks, Bestie. 🥰

Y’all. I am telling you, TKEM is a fantastic Sci Fi/Fantasy Show that tells you just enough and then lets you use your brain to figure out the rest. And writer-nim said she intentionally did not spell everything out for her audience, because she trusted them to be smart enough to figure everything out. AWESOME! Hello, Sci Fi / Fantasy gears working overtime.

And can we talk about the total no damsel in distress here Female Lead Kim Go Eun! Tough as nails. Handles her own life with ease and makes no apologies for who she is in her life. Can we say awesome female lead?! I mean seriously, who doesn’t want to hang out with her or have her cover your back?!

And of course, we cannot forget Lee Min Ho as our hip, laidback, loved-by-everyone young math science geek King. Seriously, he rows, people! Does anyone know how hard that sport is? And how awesome that sport is? I do, I was a coxswain back in the day 🥰

The world-building, the storytelling, the appearance out of nowhere, of a man on a white horse.

Hello, let’s throw Knight in White Shinning Armor on its head and make the White Knight a Horse (and a female horse to boot), and have the King fumbling around in another World. Hello! Its “Dude in Distress” and NOT “Damsel in Distress.” 😂😂😂 Oh Come On! Who didn’t see that coming? “Dude in Distress” – HYSTERICAL!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

And here we go again, my talking about Music.

TKEM is the second Kdrama OST I ever purchased and Hello, I left the planet listening to this OST. No hyperbole this time.

I am so glad they released the full album with the songs and the original score. I cannot get enough of this OST. Which probably makes rewatching TKEM so easy, and this one I have seen so so so many times. So many. Did I mention so many? I mean so many times. Did I say that already? 🤭 Gosh, I sure do love me some repetition, don’t I?! 😬🥰😝

My Favorite Song from TKEM (Spoilers)

My Second Favorite Song from TKEM (Spoilers)

My Third Favorite Song from TKEM (Spoilers)

Full TKEM OST – Yes, its 1hr 52 mins long and that’s ok. Please listen to the whole thing. 🥰 You will thank me at some point…I hope. 😇

Sniffle, I want to talk about TKEM so much more and all the ins and outs, but that’s Spoiler territory. So, once everyone watches it AND LOVES TKEM, then we can discuss all the intricacies and why this Show just rocks over on the Drama Exchange on Patreon.

Or maybe I can convince KFG for a Group Watch of TKEM. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 For now, we will just have to move on to my next all time favorite Fantasy Kdrama. 🥰🥰🥰

Y’all! I cant tell you how I dragged my feet to watch Guardian: The Lonely and Great God all because of Netflix’s synopsis.

What, a High School Girl with 600 year old Goblin? Well, isn’t that taking the older man younger woman trope a bit too far, people?! I kept seeing Guardian on Netflix and kept ignoring said Show for months until….drum roll phlease I watched Coffee Prince. Hello Gong Yoo. 🤩🤩🤩 What had I been missing? 🤭🤭🤭

I had to now go find Guardian at all costs. And I slammed right into Guardian only being available on Viki. I had just reached a crossroads people. 🧐

Do I sign up for Viki or stay in the “safety zone” of Netflix? Netflix had been letting me down by not providing enough content of Kdrama shows I wanted to see. I’d found some relief with Hulu, but they really did not have a wide selection of Kdramas, then. Might still be the case?

The dilemma became, if I sign up for Viki, my friends and family will probably not ever see or talk to me again, with all those Kdramas at my finger tips. Oh what to do…. What to do! 🤔🤔🤔

I did the only sensible thing one can do in this situation, I signed up and went for the Viki PassPlus. 🤩🥰🤩🥰🤩🥰

If I thought TKEM was amazing and the World stopped, Time stopped with Guardian, literally.

The opening music sucked me and never let me go until the end. Talk about a week-long binge hiding, from all responsibility and friends and family and and and….OMO. I think I ate that week. Cant swear to it though. 🤔 Pretty sure didn’t answer my phone. Might have left the house. Questionable though. 🤔

How did I wait this long???? What is wrong with me? Why did I wait this long??? 🤔🤔🤔

While, I have watched Bride of Habaek and The King:Eternal Monarch so many times, I have been only able to watch Guardian once. Can you believe that? Its true. 😬 Seriously.

The Show moved me so much, that when I went for my second watch, I had to stop and wait. I need another week where I throw caution and responsibility to the wind and just sink into this show. I have been waiting for the right time. Maybe I am just waiting for Shahz. 🥰

Guardian Introduction Song aka “Time Stopping Song for JJ” (Spoilers)

Favorite Song (FMV Spoilers)

Beautiful Song (Spoilers)

Full OST Guardian

One last thing!

One funny note to share with everyone is that when my Sci Fi Buddy Adrian and I discussed TKEM, I lamented over the fact KFG did not love it as much as we did. And I said, “But, Adrian its such a great Sci Fi Fantasy Show” and he says to me “JJ, it’s not a Sci Fi Fantasy Show, it’s a looooooooove story”. Stopped me in my tracks and I busted out laughing!!!!

😇🤭🤪🧐😅🤩🤔😬🥰😝😂🤣😭🤩🥰

So People, I guess everyone can see right through me even though I claim Sci Fi & Fantasy are totally my wheelhouse. My top three favorite Kdramas so far of all time are all about Love. And really, when we get down to it, isn’t that what Life is all about?

❤️ Love ❤️

You are not alone! It’s so good to see another fan of The Bride of Habaek! 🙌 I wrote a short review on MyDramaList if you are interested I can give you the link 🤭

Oh, JJ, your post had me grinning ear-to-ear. I won’t apologise for never having even heard of your bride thingymy but I had a very similar experience when i stumbled across Ten Miles of Peach Blossom – woah, what the heck is this terrible CGI and why am I still enthralled?! It’s still one of my all-time favourite shows ever. But I have seen Eternal King Monarch (you may have noticed, I’m terrible with titles, even when I’ve just read them) on the back of seeing Lee Minho being all kinds of inappropriate yet somehow very attractive in Boys Over Flowers. I kept lamenting the hairstyle as I think he looked very nice with curly hair. Anyway, it is gutting when you love a show and lots of others don’t and so I just wanted to say I did enjoy it, even the bits that didn’t make sense, but especially that he was a Mathematician King 😌

@Ele Nash – OMO!!! I totally missed your message 😔😢

Its ok you have never heard of Bride of Habek!!! Maybe you will stumbled upon it and fall in love with it like I did!!!!

Ohhhh I forgot all about Ten Miles of Peach Blossom. I have to put that on my list to watch!!!!

Who needs titles??? 😉

Ohhhhh another Lee Min Ho fan???? Hope so 🥰

TKEM is still standing up as one of my all time favorite Fantasy Kdramas with an incredible OST! Even though, I have to agree with you on the Mathematician King part which was a wee bit of a head scratcher, but I let all that go for all the other fantastic parts 🥰🥰🥰

Dear JJ
Thank you for your wonderful post with so much love for TKEM, it was my gateway drama and I really love it too!! I was quite sad when I realised that wonderful KFG and the equally wonderful Dramas over flowers were not fans.
I had to laugh with your description of getting Viki, as I have been holding off for fear of exactly that (Goblin is the reason I will be getting it)
BOH is on my list and is much closer to the top – thank you!!!

As someone who loves clean, old school fantasy series, I agree with JJ. So much of the recent fantasy and sci-fi have indeed gone too dark, or filthy, or depressing, or all of the above. For past US series, I do remember liking Fringe (though I didn’t finish it for some reason) and the first season of Heroes.

Finding a good combination of fantasy, romance, pretty colors, heroes, gorgeous musical score and epic storylines are a tall order. I can think of three c-dramas that has most (but not all) of these elements and would highly recommend:

Nirvana in Fire 2: Wind Blows in Chang Lin – is a hero “growth” story with the lightest sprinkle of fantasy and romance. It’s more straightforward than the original NIF but you don’t need to watch the first one to enjoy this. KFG’s review is very much on point. The bad guys do get a lot of screen time but this serves as build-up to the story’s climax and is well worth it. NIF2 was my introduction to Liu Haoran and his performance as the lead Xiao Pingjing was phenomenal. So much so that I looked up his other works (which is how I ended up watching and loving the series below).

Novoland: Eagle Flag – is a sprawling high fantasy epic about pawns caught in the wars and schemes of the power players in the world of Novoland. This is one series I truly wish more people watched and knew about (including KFG). The large cast of excellent actors, intricate sets, costumes, locations, musical score and overall scope of the story are breathtakingly cinematic. There are shifting alliances and complex character motivations without losing sight of what’s good and what’s not. There are some mixed reviews about the series though, not because of the quality but mostly because of their expectations of how a “hero” should act and how his journey should be. Probably the key to fully enjoying Novoland: Eagle Flag is understanding that the protagonist is someone quiet, calm and frail. He is someone who is deeply compassionate and abhors war. He doesn’t place a high value on his own life and thus tolerates a lot of ill situations and machinations. But the characterizations are all on-point and consistent (even when you don’t agree with them). And unlike other books or series where the big showdown is towards the end, this one doesn’t have it there. It’s a hero story but not the one we usually see. There’s elements of romance too yet this isn’t a romance. Hah. Upon finishing this, I immediately hounded my family members so they can watch (and so that I can rewatch it too).

Three Lives, Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (aka Eternal Love in Viki and Netflix starring Yang Mi & Mark Chao) – is a fantasy romance featuring mortals and immortals (known as the xianxia genre). Again, KFG’s review for this is super on point. The cgi is ugly by current standards but the story, acting and everything else makes up for it. I jumped in not knowing the story (nor knowing anything about the genre) and was ho-hum initially but was hooked completely by the 8th to early teen episodes. I’ve since tried watching other “raved” about xianxia titles but couldn’t finish any. This one is cracktastic and really special.

All three titles are on Viki (Eternal Love is also on Netflix). I think the synopsis written in wiki and other sites are a mix of misleading, too spoilery, and confusing. Just jump in and watch them all.

PS: Shin Se Kyung is gorgeous but I haven’t found a role of hers yet that I like (I saw Tree With Deep Roots and Black Knight). But with the right lenses, JJ’s enthusiasm, and my love for Nam Joo Hyuk, I might finally give The Bride of Habaek a try. And yea I enjoyed Goblin and TKEM too (though I haven’t rewatched either yet).

@ Jiyuu – Thank you so much for leaving such an awesome detailed comment and reading my post!!!

YAY! Someone else who loves old school fantasy series. And double YAY I am not the only one who notices the trend towards dark in recent fantasy and sci! Thank you!!!!

Fringe was so awesome in the beginning and I felt it faltered a bit towards the end. But, I am considering a rewatch of it now. Or maybe we will get a Kdrama remake one day?!!!! Oh yes, first season of Heroes was excellent! EXCELLENT!

Definitely a tall order, but it.can.be done.!!!!

Ohhhhh, thank you for the suggestions, so exciting. SHAHZ WE HAVE NEW SHOWS TO LOOK AT!!!!

On a serious note, I really appreciate you taking the time to write these suggestions down for me in detail. ❤️❤️❤️

Nirvana in Fire 2: Wind Blows in Chang Lin
Maybe I will start with NIF2 and work backwards!!! I like to do that sometimes 🙂

Novoland: Eagle Flag
Ohhhhh I am so glad you brought up Novoland. I think someone here mentioned it before and maybe I saw the preview on youtube or on viki. I looked at it but never checked it out. Awesome! I love the sound of this Hero! Abhors war, quiet , calm, and deeply compassionate. (Reaper are you seeing this comment??) Oh if I end up loving it we can try to work KFG together 🙂

Three Lives, Three Worlds, Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms (aka Eternal Love
Phl1rxd said I must absolutely see this one and I have been eyeing it for some time now. Gotta love cracktastic Shows. Where would we be without them?!!!

Thanks for letting know they are on Viki which I think has the better subs than Netflix! I love when I just jump in without too much of any idea of whats going on!

PS: I loved her in Rookie Historian and Run On. She is sooo believable to me for some reason.

BOH is NOT great by any means, but it has so much heart, means well, its fantasy hello and well there are some deeply special moments, I think. If I say more its all spoilery 🙂

YAY someone else who loves Nam Joo Hyuk AND enjoyed ( can I say love though sounds better, lol) TKEM AND Goblin.

JJ, what a great post, about shows and a genre I participate in, on the fringes. 😂 But your enthusiasm is contagious, so I may just have to try Bride of Haebok, at least.I know sci-fi is your wheelhouse, but your taste seems to be broad – as long as most characters act decently, there is a pretty clear path to the good, and there’s not too much violence. Well, and if there is looove in the story. Sounds like a perfect story to me.

Thanks, as always, for your enthusiasm about all things kdrama and kdrama fans! Your such a booster for us. Daebak!

@Leslie – Thank you for reading my post!!!! OMO! Hey, Ill take it if you are on the fringes because you are not a hard nope not watching this genre! OMO! Leslie, I love BOH even with its “issues” which I kindly overlook and just love the story, Swoon! Sigh, I am still finishing up my rewatch and makes me smile. If you watch it, hang in there for the first three episodes until everything settles down 🙂 And you know were to find me (Drama Exchange) to ask any questions you might have!!!

Leslie!!! You totally nailed it! YES! EXACTLY ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Terrific post–thanks for sharing!

I love that you included videos of your favorite songs. I think the music in TKEM and Guardian were a cut above most kdramas, especially the instrumetal background music. By the way, one of my favorites from Guardian is the whimsical “A Glittering Wind” instrumental.

Thanks for sharing your dilema about subscribing to Viki. I chuckled ’cause it sounded like me! After a little angst, I took the plunge a few weeks agon and am happily immersed in a plethera of choices. Since I’m a newbie, it is great to have access to all the older dramas that “drama connnoisseurs” recommend. G etting the message “not available in your area” on Prime Video AND Viki is disappointing, but having access to so many movies is great.

Just a few questions:
— How do you feel about sageuk? Many have lots of magical, complicated mythologies. I couldn’t make it past the first two episodes of Red Sky.
–What did you think of “The Silent Sea” series and the “Space Sweepers” movie available on Netflix?

@Su San – Hi there!!! So good to see you over here. Thanks so much for reading my post, leaving a comment and for your kind compliment!!! THANK YOU!!!

Have to have music in all my posts. Thats one of the big pulls for me with Kdramas I have found now.

YAY! Someone who also loves TKEM and Guardian’s music AND you have a musical background. Sweet!!!

Oh thats a harpsichord right in “A Glittering Wind”? Or a computer imitating a harpsichord, right? Funny thing is parts of this song reminds me of the music for the American TV Show the Patridge Family and I have no idea why 😂😂😂😂😂
This song “A Glittering Wind” just makes me smile. Thank so much for reminding me about it 🙂 I am playing it now while writing you back 🙂

YAY! YOU took the Viki Plunge! Have you showered? Eaten? Left the house? Talked with friends or family. If you answered No to all the above, its soooo ok. We have all been there 😂😂😂

Oh I cannot stand that not available in your region message. I am always like “WHY”??? Hello Global Society needs a Global All Access Tier, thank you very much!!!

Answers below to your questions, thanks for asking me some 🙂
Just a few questions:
— How do you feel about sageuk? Many have lots of magical, complicated mythologies. I couldn’t make it past the first two episodes of Red Sky.
My Answer: I have found I prefer the more comical sageuks such as 100 Days My Prince and Rookie Historian. So I tend to just stick with the funnier ones now. Shahz and I have talked about how sageuks dont work for us in general because of the lack of personal agency for the females. And for me, I get so bored by the palace politics. BUT, we all loved Red Sleeve and the music is gorgeous in there.

Red Sky had such promise and I made it to the end, but it so lost its way. BUT the OST is fantastic especially the instrumental tracks, I think. Here is one of my favorites from Red Sky:-)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K7iUHUHsmAs&ab_channel=VariousArtists-Topic

–What did you think of “The Silent Sea” series and the “Space Sweepers” movie available on Netflix?
My Answer: I enjoyed Silent Sea and LOVED Bae Doona’s character and could have had the story only been about her, she is just amazing. Gong Yoo did a great job as usual, but his character was just ok for me. The story was a typical space sci fi and for a Kdrama’s first attempt out the gate for sci fi, I think they did a great job from that perspective.

I have not seen Space Sweepers yet, I have heard mixed reviews. So I have been putting it off :-0

Absolutely LOVE THIS ❤️❤️❤️ – “Drama-on, fellow KFG fan……”

Yes, Time Travel! It’s hard to find it done right. For example, the current series under discussion: Someday or One Day. No spoilers, but I didn’t like the part where . . . oh right, no spoilers.

The same problematic thing happened in the last season of the U.S. series Fringe, which overall was quite good.

@mikereport – well hop over to the open thread zone to talk about Someday or One Day spoilers. Thats the safe zone over there for Spoiler Talk.

LOVED Fringe until the last season. LOVED Fringe until then. Sooo good.

@JJ – Fringe was one of the best shows ever. We loved every minute, and we really liked the last season – despite some frustrating moments, so there you go. I loved the way it challenged the Grandfather Paradox in the end, and not only that, Walter has been proven right (theoretically, mathematically) since show aired 😉

I have forgotten all the details though except that I loved the Show and some moments here and there. They really did well with parallel universes. I wonder if the Show still holds up today?

OMO! I Loved Walter. He has? Go Walter!!! LOL!

One of the great things re Fringe is the great body of work the four key actors have done since. This in itself signals what an influential and outstanding piece of work Fringe was (is).

I used to feel sorry for that poor cow. Also, having Leonard Nimoy play a part along the way was awesome.

Will it hold up today? I believe so.

Yes, Go Walter – nobody else could play him like John Noble did. Here is an article on the research, JJ – something I shared with phl at the time: https://www.uq.edu.au/news/article/2020/09/young-physicist-squares-numbers%E2%80%99-time-travel

@seankfletcher- I didnt realize all four went on to have successful careers. Thats really good to know.

Oh I forgot all about the cow until you mentioned it. And ah yes, Leonard Nimoy!!!! Gosh, Fringe was GREAT wasnt it. I might have to sneak in a couple episodes of Fringe.

John Noble is amazing. He was utterly ahmazing in LOTR! And he was in Sleepy Hollow which was GREAT until it was not. OMO! I had no idea Mr. Noble was an Aussie . YAY!!!!

Thank you for that article!!! Very interesting, but havent some Shows already explored what they mathematically proved? I remember Farscape did this AMAZING Episode about Time Travel. Gosh, its still one of my favorites ever. EVER.

You know, JJ – I am almost convinced to rewatch some episodes of Fringe, myself. As for John Noble, he totally owned his character in LOTR – you wouldn’t know it was him. Ahhh, Sleepy Hollow – I know exactly what you mean. Anna Torv is an Aussie too and has tended to be just as busy at home as abroad.

Up until the Queensland geniuses recently re time travel, we had Einstein who said yes re special relativity – going forward, Hawking that said no re travelling back in time and the the many thoughts re black holes, wormholes and the like. As for Farscape – absolutely loved it and the episode you mentioned (if we are taking about Different Destinations) re time travel is a classic.

There are so many great time travel stories, shows, episodes and films, it’s hard to pick my all time favourite, but for me it’s probably Doctor Who’s The Girl In The Fireplace.

All this talk of Fringe is making me want to rewatch Fringe start to finish instead of just a couple episodes as I said previously!!!!

John Noble in LOTR eating the meal at the table with Pippin singing with the his son riding out with the rest of the men to their deaths. So utterly fantastic I dont have words 🙂

Sniffle Sleepy Hollow that you for what you were able to do.

Oh I love Anna Torv so good to hear she has been busy at home as well!

Did you ever watch Killjoys or Orphan Black?!?! Love them both so very much. So much. OMO! Did I say so much. Two beyond fanastic leads. Killjoys ended brilliantly in my opinion. Its so rare to pull off a great series finale.

Ah ok….

I watched Different Destinations soooo many times. Utterly stunned by that episode. One of my all time favorites ever for any show. And the Clone episodes. Phenomenal acting by Claudia Black. Gosh, she never got her due in my opinion in other Shows. She is fantastic.

Ohhh I did see that episode oddly enough! But I dont remember all the details of Doctor Who’s The Girl In The Fireplace. Oh maybe Ill need to rewatch that one, too!!

GOSH, I just LOVE talking about Sci Fi. Now, if we can get Kdramas into some real sci fi. Score!!!!

@JJ, yes I loved Killjoys and Orphan Black (TM is one extremely talented actress – and is going to play She-Hulk next – I’m still laughing at that one). I enjoyed Dark Matter too.

I think Claudia Black (she’s an Aussie as well – so we have been watching her forever) is awesome and I was tickled pink she was in Stargate along with Ben Browder.

Kdramaland is trying hard to get there. It will happen, but it’s always about the budget.

– Killjoys was a total joy each week and loved the storytelling and twist and turns. I think it stayed solid throughout its run. I 1,000% agree about TM! Saw her in a movie and had no idea it was her. Groan She Hulk??? Groan…

I tried Dark Matter…. 🙂

Aussie1 Aussie! Aussie! Oi ! Oi! Oi! Dang, did I forget tha fact about Claudia Black??? As I was telling Beez I could never get into Stargate the Show. LOVED the movie though.

Well, at least Kdramas do lots of Fantasy. But a Farscape Kdrama style would be amazing. However, Farscape was amazing all on its own with all the character stories. Love that Show.

Budget Schmudget…..just get it done! 🙂

With Farscape, I was ecstatic that such a show was creating its own path and it was not the same as anything else that was out there. I used to think that about Sliders as well (the early seasons were brilliant).

We probably watch Stargate the movie every couple years. As for the show, we liked it and it’s different incarnations – I tic tac with with the executive producer on his blog. He also made Dark Matter and has a SK drama adaptation in the works.

Yes, too right, just get it done kdramaland 😉

@jj @Seank – I know this is weird, but Farscape and The Ten Commandments (1968 version, I think) are eye candy for me (and this time I’m not talking about Yul Brynner in an Egyptian skirt (but where’s my fan)). Just the colors and costumes just fill my eyes. I have no better way to describe the reaction of my eyes/brain but I can’t think of anything else that gives me that same feeling just from looking.

Oh what a joy to find other people in love with Fringe. I have watched the whole show 3 times I think (not in a long while though so maybe time for a re-watch! ;)). It took me a minute to adjust to the different tone of the last season, but I loved it, warts and all.

One of my all time fav shows is The X-Files. Fringe just seemed to fill the void left in my heart after TXF completed their run 😀

What a fabulous, inventive story of parallel universes and big scifi themes and at the same time an intimate look into a complicated father-son relationship and well done romance. Fringe just had it all. <3

I agree, the actors were fantastic and I am also glad their careers have done well since Fringe.

One of my favorite things (too many to list) was Walter and Asteroid’s relationship lol

JJ, what a fun post! I’ve not seen any of your top shows and tested the waters around here re Goblin so that’s still hanging around on my optional K-drama list. A few quick things:

(1) I fourth/fifth/whateverth Splish Splash Love. Please tell us what you think of it.

(2) I have to own up to the fact that I wasn’t the one who suggested you and Shahz might be the same person. But I wish I had.

(3) I feel the “gotta watch more of this shown and…now…must…order….VIKI” feeling. I think I did it for Hotel del Luna (I hear you all snickering out there, so stop it!) but haven’t once regretted it.

(4) As a fellow SF fan, here’s a secret just between us. I met Robert Heinlein once.

Oh wow, you know, I think Heinlein was (one of?) my gateway(s) to real honest to goodness written SF. Up to that point, I had mostly been into fantasy, but then one day in 8th grade I was bored and browsing in the school library, and they had a paperback copy of Number of the Beast, and I grabbed it and totally got sucked into this group of mouthy super-geniuses banging around the literary multi-verse having adventures (Number of the Beast is, objectively speaking, not a very good book. But 14 year old me didn’t exactly realize that at the time).

That kicked off a real Heinlein period for the rest of high school, and from there a whole bunch of other SF as well. I also read Dune the for the first time that year, as I recall. What a classic…

Ha ha! I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who didn’t care for Hospital Playlist’s musical interludes. I often fell asleep or fast forwarded through them until I realized that sometimes they had a little scene or two flash in there. That forced me to stay alert through them. For the record, I totally ❤ Cho Jung-Seok as an actor but as a singer not so much. Same with Ji Chang wook. I think they both think they’re good singers because of their successes on Korean Broadway but oh my ears! 😆 I know they can hold a tune but I don’t want to hear them on a regular basis.

I remember being gobsmacked at the sheer amount (and intensity) of kissing in BOH to the point of even thinking “Get a room!” But that’s probably a good thing that a Kdrama could make me think that.

@jj – the show was very beautiful to look at. I can’t remember at this point what it was, but I know there was something in the story’s logic that kept it off my favorites list. The sci-fi nerd in me can’t ignore leaps of logic and I definitely remember being agitated about something. I think it had to do with a cave and Habeak’s original lost love or something being left hanging and not explained. (By the way, if you have an explanation…?)

The way you describe Show makes me almost, allllmost, want to watch it again.

King Eternal Monarch – same problem for me. That “baby horse” though 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 will live on into eternity.

I did enjoy BOH and TKEM but not as much as my expectations for them wanted to.

Now Goblin! It didn’t need to make sense to me (although it did) but even if it didn’t, I would’ve enjoyed it for the bromance of watching two senior popular actors’ chemistry and bouncing lines off each other. Loved everything about it! And I even liked the female lead! heavens to Betsy! Wonders never cease!

Anyway, jj, as one sci-fi fan to another, I greatly appreciated hearing how you described these shows. Makes me want to revisit them, especially BOH if just for the visuals.

And YAY! for love stories! One thing old Hollywood used to know was that no matter how machismo or action filled a movie was, it needed a love story. That’s why one of my all-time favorites is Taras Bulba. (Although I watched it recently with my daughter-in-law and it didn’t hold up to current day morality (especially the things that cause “me too” moments). I guess some things should remain as fond memories and not revisited.

– See? This! This type of thing I can never forgive. It’s like bad wigs. I spend the entire rest of the show going “Couldn’t they spring to pay for better [insert cheap prop]. In the case of bad wigs in thinning “just $60 mo’ dollars…”
I mean, honestly, I know the Kdrama shoot schedule can be very tight but since no one was riding Minimus,

PAUSE FOR LAUGH BREAK
as I picture a rodeo clown with legs dragging the ground trying to ride Minimus😂🤣😂🤣
and no one in the scene with Minimus, couldn’t they have sent a crew of interns to film a white colt somewhere? Anywhere? They could’ve paid some farmer in Utah to record a white colt and send the footage to S.K. I just can’t…

I find it hilarious now but because I take my Kdramas so seriously (especially what I expect from this writer’s dramas) and want them to do well that at the time, I was obsessed. Everytime they showed Maximus, my thoughts would jump to Minimus and start going off on their inner tirade. 😆

Hey Beez!!! Thanks so much for reading my post and leaving me a comment ❤️❤️❤️

LOL! Yes, for some reason Hospital Playlist music never worked for me. I guess these things happen 🙂 OMO!!! I thought it was only mean about Cho Jung Seok’s singing. WOW! Maybe his singing is better suited for singing on stage in more of the Showtunes? Ji Chang Wook sings?!!!!! The things you learn 🙂

LOL! Right. The kissing was so intense, I forgot all about that (totally lying here AGAIN), LOL!!!

Beez – I totally understand about the logic fails and I from a Sci Fi perspective I totally understand. BUT, thats where I let the rules be loose since we are in a Fantasy Show 🙂 I allow for a ton of latitude when we are in a Fantasy World EVEN IF the writers dont explain everything well 🙂

BOH Cave Scene Spoiler
BOH Cave Spoiler – She was being held in the cave because she was caught trying to curse our ML. So she had to be put away until the Queen Mother could put her to death as she was given to them as a human sacrifice. So barbaric, right? And ML went to see her one more time to let her know he would never forgive her betrayal of him. And she said she did it so she could be immortal and stay with him. Who knows right? And yes, that whole scene was a little choppy and definitely wanted more explanation, but I rolled with it at that point 🙂

YAY! I am so excited you allllllmost want to rewatch the show because of the way I described the Show. ❤️ Maybe just peek at it then?! Remember the first three episodes do require patience while our FL starts to settle down.

Now for TKEM, I can understand more of the Sci Fi issues, but again the music and story made me overlook all that 🙂

Baby Horse. LOL! I think I missed that and must go back to find it. LOL!!!!

TKEM grabbed my heart and still has it ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

YAY someone who looooooves Goblin! Hello Watch Party!!!!! Lets do this!!! LOL!!! Love Love love the Bromance and sometimes didnt want it to end. Its amazing when two professional of equal caliber get together what magic they can create no? Gotta love Kim Go Eun in these roles. I love it!

Awwww, thanks Beez.❤️❤️❤️❤️ Its so awesome having a Sci Fi Fan to discuss and to speak the same language to. Some things we just get without having to discuss. Look, I am not saying BOH and TKEM are BSG level, but they are awesome in their own ways and I love it.

BOH with their visuals still stick with me and during my rewatch, same effect. So vibrant, so much life. So stunning.

Gotta have love at the end of the day or why else are we doing all this, right?!!!!

Ah you are throwing me back to some of the great MGM Movie Musicals 🙂

Oh hummer! I am sorry Taras Bulba didnt hold up during your rewatch. Go watch BOH again, then 😉

p.s. There was one part in my post I wanted to put in there “So Say We All” but wasnt sure how many people would have gotten the reference 🙂

@jj – JCW plays piano too! His career reminds me of Hugh Jackson’s in that we all want to see them do action films but they’d rather do musical theatre. 😆 JCW will usually do at least one song on the OST of any show that he’s in.

Thanks for trying to jog my memory about the first love/cave thing but I’ll need to see it. Do you know which episode that happened in? If you don’t know, please don’t trouble yourself trying to find it for my sake. I just thought since you’ve rewatched a few times you might know. (Never feel embarrassed by the number of rewatches. I’ve watched Healer so many times that I’ve lost count!)

I do remember liking the early episodes of BOH best! And I can’t explain since they were technically sorta baddies, it but I really liked Gong Myung’s and Krystal’s characters.

BSG was done really well (especially if anyone here has ever seen the horrible 70’s show it was based on. 😆 I liked it but it was darker than the shows that I considered my favorites.

JJ! I loved your post, and the ending was so lovely! I think your mate Adrian is 100%: these all love stories, let’s say in a fantastical context.
Among the three, my choice would be Goblin. I wasn’t that much into the OTP (it wasn’t the age difference to be honest, it just felt awkward to me) but the casting was stellar and it’s one of the few Kshows that have actually made me laugh, so…
TKEM, please don’t get upset, I actually dropped around episode 8, I think. Just when it started getting confusing and, to be 100% with you, this OTP also came across as awkward to me.
Coming to think about it, I haven’t watched a Kim Go Eun without finding the OTP awkward (well, minus Yumi’s cells where the awkwardness is scripted, I think). There has been Goblin, and TEKM, and of course Cheese in the Trap, the king of awkward human relations.
As for the Bride of Haebek, I’ll be honest with you again, I thought that the potential was there but the execution was not optimal. I actually watched it because I had recently watched Rookie Historian, and I thought that the FL was pretty swell, but I can’t say I liked her that much in BOH. Anyway, BOH still inspired me to watch Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (because of the ML) and that was a show I enjoyed! So you see, this is what is cool about Kshows, you watch one, and even if you don’t particularly like it, you get to follow up to the next and the next and at last you find a gem right for you!

Thank you for saying something. ❤️

Yes! Adrian is 100% right! LOL! He usually is in our conversation. And yes, you are right these are all love stories in a Fantastic Context!!! ❤️

WOW! You liked Goblin. Amazing. And you laughed, even better ❤️

Awww, Natalia, I wont get upset that your dropped TKEM. I understand. At least you made it to episode 8. ❤️ TKEM did take lots of focus and trying to figure it all out at times was tough which probably adds to my number of rewatches. And trying to understand the cultural implications and language since this was my second Kdrama ever.

I loved that this was not the typical OTP in that a damsel in distress or a needy woman or a screechy woman. And I just loved Lee Min Ho in his role as the young laid back King trying to convince this tough as nails cop!

Oh wow! So maybe Kim Go Eun doesnt work for you?!!! And thats ok, too 🙂 Did not see Cheese in the Trap, luckily, I think?

YAY! I love honesty 🙂 Everyone has a different view point and thats how we learn to look at the World, I think. I cannot disagree with you about the “potential was there but the execution was not optimal” . I still love it though for all its roughness 🙂

Oh, I LOVED Rookie Historian and watched it after BOH because of the FL. Did you like Rookie Historian? Ill be honest in BOH our FL took me awhile to warm up to because of all her whining and just not getting her act together. I still hung in there though and thought she was a fantastic actor!

OMO! I I LOVED Weightlifting Fairy Kim!❤️❤️❤️❤️ Oh thats awesome you enjoyed that Show! Look at you go 🙂

Yes! I agree, with so many Kdramas out there everyone has their own gems to find ❤️❤️❤️

Thank you again for reading my post and for your comments. Loved them ❤️

What I like most about this drama is the tea room and the themes of karma and reincarnation. I cry whenever I watch the tea room scenes – every single time. They move me deeply.

I love, love, love the grandfather so much. I thought the bar scene was exceptional. I am moved to tears at the park scene and the poem. I also feel that the scene on the roof is bombastic. To be honest, I think the bromance scenes are a little overdone, but they do have some much needed moments of hilarity as the story is very heavy.

The acting is so very good and Yoo In Ah, my favorite actress, is especially delightful. I bought the OST (thank you for posting the entire OST which includes the instrumentals) and love the two instrumentals on the album (#03 First Love and #09 Memory Loss) the best. I also bought the DVD set so I always have it available to watch. I remember that when this first aired, I waited each week for the two new episodes to drop, and even re-watched what was available because I simply could not get enough. A lot of netizens had issues with the OTP age difference but it does not bother me.

By the way, two of the three dramas you have listed above (TKEM and Goblin) were written by Kim Eun Sook. She also wrote DOTS, Mr. Sunshine, The Heirs and Secret Garden, among others. She has a new drama in the works – The Glory – starring Song Hye Kyo and Lee Do Hyun. I will probably watch this for Lee Do Hyun.

Each one of us has that special drama that we feel strongly about. It could be because it is the first drama we have ever seen, or because the theme of the drama resonates within our hearts. I am so happy that you enjoyed and continue to enjoy BOH. Never feel guilty about re-watching!

I loved reading this post and I enjoyed the Goblin music! Your positivity is uplifting and always appreciated!

– Awwww, phl1rxd – I am so happy to hear this put a big smile on your face and you enjoyed my wild post! This one was a tough to get right and make sense. Luckily, KFG gave me some extra time to get it right!

Oh I am so excited (shrieking actually in excitement) you will check out the trailer for BOH! YAY!!! I would just watch the intro more than the trailer. However, it does take three episodes to settle down, well, at least it did for me. But, since it was my first Kdrama I was ok with seeing where this story went.

YAY someone else who enjoyed TKEM!!! YAY!!! Oh you made my day. Sometimes feel so lonely on the TKEM Island 🙂 OMO!

TKEM Spoilers
I so loved the horse. And the King. And Kim Go Eun. And the ensemble cast. And the captain. And the captain’s wife. AND I even loved the villain, he was so old school and understated. Just Perfect. I loved the bodyguard in both worlds. I loved the little kids. I loved the supporting cast, there I go repeating myself, LOL! Omo. YOU SO MADE MY DAY
❤️❤️❤️

OMO !!! Really Goblin is your #1 Kdrama. SWOON!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Gosh, you just keep making ME SMILE and making my day ❤️

Goblin Spoilerish

Oh, I totally know what you mean about the tea room. I wept unabashedly and just hit me right in the heart. Ugh. The rooftop scene did me in as well. I remembering think Nooooo what ? how is this possibly??? OMO you are making me want to go start watching it again RIGHT NOW ❤️ I could watch that Bromance forever specifically for the levity they brought to the heavy story. You are right, we so needed hilarity ❤️ I loved the second lead storyline so much even if it broke my heart so much as well.

I bought the DVD, too!!!!! YAY!!!! ❤️

I cannot stand when we cannot get the full OST that includes the instrumentals. For example, the Cdrama The Bond cannot find the full OST anywhere. So upsetting. SO SO SO Upsetting.

Ohhhhhh, thanks for numbering your favorite instrumentals!!! Ill go listen 🙂

OMO! I could not have watched this waiting each week in between. Oh I am so glad I was able to binge this one! The age difference didnt bother me when I watched because they didnt sexualize anything and kept it very innocence when she was in High School. AND I looked up the high school age of a senior which I believe is 19 or 20.

Oh yes! Thank you for that reminder. I have seen everything EXCEPT Mr. Sunshine. Not doing it. She really writes a beautiful story even if Secret Garden didnt WOW me. But I plan to watch in February with Shahz during her rewatch 🙂

Oh exciting, she has a new one in the works. Hopefully, it will be a good one!

You are so right that each one of us has that special drama. BOH sits nestled smack in the center of my heart and just makes me smile every time. Especially the ending line 🙂 Thank you telling me not to feel guilty about my rewatches ❤️

Swoon Goblin OST ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Thank you so so so much phl1rxd for making my day and I am glad you loved reading my post. Its all about Love when we get right down to it, now isnt it? ❤️❤️❤️

JJ – I am laughing because I have no right to criticize anyone on re-watches when I have watched NIF1 11 times. LOL! I shake my head at myself sometimes. The good thing is since the group watch I have had no desire to do another re-watch so maybe I am cured of my NIF1 obsession. If so, I will need to do something very special for Fangurl to show my gratitude.

I also cannot find the complete soundtrack from The Bond, only the main songs. Bummer! I will let you know if I can find it. I have only bought two complete soundtracks – Goblin and The Longest Day in Chang’an. Both were really worth it.

One quick thing – I do not know if you have seen Touch Your Heart, but if you have not then you must watch it. Sunny and Reaper are finally together in a fabulous swirl of pink roses, upholstery and sweaters! It is a blast of a watch for Goblin fans disappointed in their ending.

– 11 times for NIF1! OMO! Amazing. I still have to see it. LOL! Not sure if Shahz has seen it, yet. So maybe we will just have to pull you back in for your twelfth watch ❤️❤️❤️ Dont be cured yet until I make sure Shahz has seen it or not, LOL!!! We would have so much fun watching that with you and your amazing Notes!!! LOL!

Oh phlease do, if you find the full OST for The Bond. Gosh, I love that Show much as you already know ❤️

To date, I think I have purchased 10-12 OSTs and love them all. Oh and I have several BTS albums. Shhhhh, dont tell anyone 😉

I started Touch Your Heart, but knew it would be a binge fest and have it on hold for when I can binge. I loved the ending in Goblin, I thought it was perfect.

BTW – Thank you for reminding me about Song #3 on Goblin’s OST. Cant believe I forgot that one! ARGH! I am listening to Goblin’s OST writing everyone back and I just want to go binge this Show again. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

JJ you are adorable and your writing exuded every ouch of your essence! I love it. I’m also a proud card carrying member of the puppies and unicorn club so I love it even more haha.

I haven’t watched TKEM and BOH but I did watch Guardian/ Goblin! Though I dropped it at first but I did go back to it. I did enjoy it – maybe not as in love as you but imo it’s the most gorgeous show I’ve ever watched. The colours and the cinematography are perfect. It’s a little slow which made me love it a little less, but the bromance is epic and I loved the second couple. And it’s truly an epic journey. And, to date, I think it has one of the best and most haunting OSTs. I think Crush is one of the best OST songs I’ve ever heard in my entire drama career and that is truly high praise from me lol as music is very important to me.

Btw you might like Splash Splash Love. Fusion sageuk with so much heart and love, and Kim Seul-gi is perfect. It’s one of my puppies and rainbows shows along with We Married As A Job (jdrama, but not fantasy).

Oh sorry didn’t finish – would you consider watching When The Devil Calls Your Name? Lovely story, some fantasy elements and there’s Jung Kyung Ho who is my favourite actor (lol I’m biased). The soundtrack is so great though that it filled the top 5 of my most listened songs on Spotify last year haha. And Life on Mars, if you don’t mind some time travel, is a wonderful show not to be missed. ♥️♥️♥️

Either way always write more, it was utterly delightful to read this)!

Awwww, thanks so much MC about encouraging me to write more. I had such fun even if this one was a tad on the wild side with BOH! But that was exactly my experience watching BOH for the first time.

beez

Reply to  phl1rxd

– Well, I wouldn’t call it fun but it’s typical family weekender Kdrama for the time period – 2009. I suppose it was fun for the first 15-20 episodes but you know how these longer Kdramas have to have antagonists that work your nerves? The entire rich family are nerve pluckers. 😆 I’m at episode 38 so things are hitting the angsty point so I’m not enjoying it as much as at first. (Like jj, I like unicorns, puppies and rainbows, preferable all at the same time.) There are a lot of cultural things that seem to have changed in the past decade. So there are colloquialisms and cultural things that i haven’t come across before. (Grandpa calls his son “Emmie” and the drama explains in parenthesis that this means “a son with children”; and he calls his daughter-in-law “Amie” with a similar explanation.) But the main reason that I keep seeking out these older, lengthy family dramas is they seem to speak slower and conversations seem to be repeated more often (probably to fill these episodes) and that helps me recognize new words and words that I already know. I would love to use Healer as my learning drama but Park Min young talks entirely too fast!

BTW – I recent watched Come Jang Bori! Not much by way of story but it’s centered around a modern day hanbok business that specializes in traditional hand made hanbok. (Think haute couture.) The hanboks they made to sell are traditional as seen in most saeguks but the hanboks that the women of the family wear daily have a slightly modern style. The fabric and the quality of the construction is so beautiful that it was/is definitely worth the watch for anyone that’s got a keen interest in fashion, especially historic fashion.

@Beez – KDrama certainly works those chaebols don’t they?

I just looked Come Jang Bori up and it is from 2014 and they all look so young in Axxxxn Wiki. I enjoy sewing and if only I had the physical space and resources to lay out the width of fabric that is required for Hanboks and Hanfu with few seams. I can find a pattern – just no space to operate. It sounds very interesting and I can check it out after I get through Sean’s Japanese drama and movie which are proving to be really good.

Miz B – I am thinking we need two monitors to watch with a remote in each hand…

Oh yes, about Guardian/Goblin it is a most gorgeous Show isnt it. Oh see I loved the slowness of it so much. Almost felt as if I was watching a novel. EPIC is such the RIGHT word for this Show!!!!

Your post is a pure delight, JJ. You write with such a free flowing style and your enthusiasm jumps off the page 🏆🏆🏆

I enjoyed Bride of Habaek very much and gave it 9.5/10. I chuckled regularly at our slacker god and the journey he undertook to regain his powers in the mortal realm. I do like the grey of The Witcher. Our youngest got the complete set of books for Christmas, so I have hijacked those 😱

However, I dropped TKEM. It had so much promise, but I felt it let down the whole sci-fi genre quite badly. Introducing fantastical (fantasy) elements was a bit jarring for me. Also, I found LMH was a bit of a cardboard cutout.

As for Goblin, I lasted five episodes. I ended up feeling uncomfortable where show was heading, because up until that point, the cast were delivering and the story was exploring great concepts.

So, I guess 1 out of 3 ain’t bad 😂😜😉

I am ok with some grey and I Looooooooved Witcher Season 2 sooooo much. OMO! So much. Witcher Season 1 wasnt just grey from my point of view, it was dark and nearly without Hope.

Oh I have to close my eyes and protect my ears about what you had to say about TKEM 😭😭😭😭😭 Sniffle. Sigh. We can discuss on Patreon. Hurts my heart to hear you said it let down our favorite genre. Sniffle.

I can understand though with Goblin. But, I think it saved itself and I did love so much about Goblin.

Goblin Spoilers

Goblin Spoilers – I loved the Bromance so much. I loved the second ML and FL story. And they did not make it creepy at all when she was a high school student because I so would have been out of there in a flash.

YAY ! Glad you thought s2 of Witcher was awesome. Ohhhh, that must be fun to be playing those songs on the guitar. I think I need to rewatch Witcher 2 at some point 🙂

@Beez @JJ @phl – Okay, so be prepared to be dazzled by my insight as I sit here writing, sweating bullets 😅

All of a sudden I became very jaded with Sunny and Reaper’s situation. It wasn’t turning out to be a positive experience for me. I kept thinking, what have you done to my wonderful Yoo In Na? So, the great thing for me about Touch Your Heart is not the fact that these two were again in a show together, but in a show that does have 🌈 and 🦄 From memory, I mentioned in posts elsewhere re TYH that I kept laughing at all the pink, because that’s how it is at home 😂

Sadly, I became slightly frustrated with the bromance. I get a bit antsy when the bromance conflict is about a girl in the house and not because they have an unsaid great friendship. Man to Man is perhaps my favourite show in this regard: the bromance is hilarious.

I found the way that scene in Quebec unfolded using the door to travel, mash up time etc. not at all satisfactory. Very few shows get this right when it comes to doors as a plot device. I mean look at Hodor in GoT. That just about gutted me 🤣🤣🤣 I note you can now get door stops with Hodor on them 😆😆😆 The best door expose (apart from popping in and out of the Tardis): Monsters Inc. 😜🤪😜

Was I concerned about the child bride and school girl uniform scenarios? – yes I was. Both are a very tricky as a premise and need to be handled in the correct context. I found myself going around and around re this issue. Age gaps, sugar daddies and the like are not an issue for me when it comes to adults. The jdorama – Papakatsu is a case in point (but didn’t turn as well as it should have). I do take JJ’s reassurances on board.

Finally, did I have a problem with the excessive product placement aka a certain brand of chicken? No, I didn’t, but it was a huge controversy in SK at the time 😂😱😂

Sean – fair enough assessment and thank you so very much (I know you are busy) for your concise explanation. I felt the bromance was overdone to be honest, but I did feel it needed some comic relief (and some of it was done quite well). Also, as someone well versed in HR protocol, I thought that you might see the age difference in a different light. I can see you sitting there going “Hmm, this could be a problem”. For me Sean, the main theme of the drama so deeply resonated with me that I ignored some issues and/or was not bothered by others.

I was just really being a curious cat to get your take as I value your opinion. It is funny as I love Goblin but I just barely made it through My Mister. You love My Mister and did not make it through Goblin. Yet, on average I love everything else you have ever recommended. Funny, isn’t it? 😄That is the beauty of KDrama as it spreads the love 💖around – a little something for everyone. (Imagine if you will, a finger heart emoji inserted here)

Big thanks Sean for your answer! I especially enjoyed 💖“I kept thinking, what have you done to my wonderful Yoo In Na?”. She is so wonderful.

Shows that resonate are an amazing thing – very much like the song that evokes a reaction which, sometimes, can’t be explained.

I think you have summed it up beautifully, phl – “That is the beauty of KDrama as it spreads the love 💖around – a little something for everyone.” I think there could be a post in there somewhere on that subject: KDrama: A Little Something For Everyone.

@Mr. Fletcher – wait. I have to pause and laugh at myself (I crack me up!)

Okay, Sean, Goblin himself was repulsed at the idea of such a young bride. Even though she recognized and embraced the role, he was completely hands off.(Heck! Even his mind seemed to be “hands off” so to speak.) The only hint of romance came once FL was in her 30’s I think. Which is interesting because ultimately the story was about an epic love. Neat trick pulling both things off.). It’s really worth giving it another look-see. Please, seaniekins, please! For me????! (I know I’m pushing it. I don’t know what’s gotten into me today.
