Review: Romantics Anonymous [Japan]

THE SHORT VERDICT:

In my opinion, this little show manages to do a lot, despite its very short run-time.

As a rom-com, it’s familiar yet fresh, managing to weave rom-com tropes that we recognize, into a Japanese-quirky narrative that I found difficult to predict.

And then, concurrently, we’ve got healing journeys for our main characters, which, at their core, feel relatable and meaningful, because don’t we all have some healing to do, yes? 🥲

Add on the facts that: 1, we get both Han Hyo Joo and Oguri Shun playing our OTP, 2, the chocolates in this show are lovingly filmed and look absolutely delicious, and 3, this is only 8 short episodes, and I don’t see how you’d want to say “No” to this one. 😉🥰

Review: Blood Free

If you’re familiar with my taste in dramas, you’d know that this isn’t a genre that I would typically reach for.

Even though I have a great deal of fondness for both Han Hyo Joo and Joo Ji Hoon, I was honestly ready to sit this one out – that is, until a fair number of you started squeeing about the chemistry between our leads, over on Patreon.

That, and the fact almost everyone seemed to fan themselves over how hawt 🔥 Joo Ji Hoon is in this, made it pretty much a given that I would succumb to FOMO and press “play” too, heh.

Now that I’ve emerged on the other side, I’m here to report back on how this drama experiment went, for me.

Review: Moving

THE SHORT VERDICT:

I think it’s safe to say that Moving is quite the remarkable drama.

Not only are the production values top-tier, the directing is thoughtful and intentional, the writing is tight, and the acting is all-around pretty darn excellent.

Add on the fact that we have quite the star-studded large cast, and doesn’t it seem like this show really is the product of all the stars aligning to create an amazing end product?

My absolute favorite thing about this show is that it is as tender, heartfelt and emotionally engaging, as it is slick, polished and gritty. I found it impossible not to care about these characters, and that, to me, is Show’s best trait and biggest accomplishment.

Highly recommend, even if you’re not typically into dramas that feature superpowers &/or blood/violence.

Review: Soundtrack #1 [Mini Series]

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Short, breezy, and polished, Soundtrack #1 is a friends-to-lovers nugget of a drama that should scratch that drama itch nicely, particularly if you:

(a) like Park Hyung Sik &/or Han So Hee;

(b) enjoy friends-to-lovers stories; &/or

(c) just want something quick and easy as a drama snack.

Really quite satisfying, for a short little thing of just 4 episodes of 45 minutes each.

Review: Happiness

THE SHORT VERDICT:

This is the zombie show that I didn’t know I needed, in my life.

Show is basically sharp, thought-provoking social commentary, dressed as a zombie drama, with a healthy dollop of (absolutely delightful!) contract marriage on the side. Not everything makes sense, but just roll with it, because Show’s social commentary feels like the main course, while all the other details that may not add up, feel incidental, almost.

Park Hyung Sik and Han Hyo Joo are absolutely wonderful in this, both individually and together, and just the two of them, make this watch more than worthwhile.

I highly recommend this, even if you’re not typically into zombie shows.

Flash Review: Always [Only You] [Movie]

I don’t think this movie is for everyone, and I certainly wouldn’t recommend it, if you happen to be looking for a light rom-com.

HOWEVER. If you’re a fan of So Ji Sub &/or Han Hyo Joo, &/or are in the mood for a love story that vibes kinda-sorta along the lines of Classic Hallyu, then there’s a good chance you’d enjoy this movie.

I definitely have a soft spot for both So Ji Sub and Han Hyo Joo, and I ended up enjoying this one pretty well myself.

Flash Review: W-Two Worlds

I’m thinking that we all have that one friend; you know, that one person that we know, who’s so unpredictable on a regular basis, that after a while, they become almost predictable in their unpredictability?

I mean, in the beginning, it’s all very surprising, and you find yourself rather stunned at said friend’s antics, and you sorta look forward to the kind of stuff said friend will get up to, coz it’s always something so unexpected and fresh.

As time goes by, though, you can’t help but start to expect the unexpected from said friend, and it just becomes that much harder to feel surprised anymore. Said friend is still pretty much the same; just, you’ve gotten used to it, is all.

W is that friend, for me.

Flash Review: Beauty Inside [Movie]

It’s funny how I sometimes stumble on a movie that I wouldn’t otherwise have checked out on my own, simply because it’s available on in-flight entertainment and I’m something of a captive audience with limited options to choose from.

Beauty Inside was the movie whose trailer appealed to me the most today, out of the k-trailers that I checked out while on the plane, and I hafta say, it turned out to be a more thought-provoking watch than I’d originally expected.

Review: That Far Gone [Master’s Sun Fanfic]

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Classy, funny and sexy, That Far Gone is a smartly-written, tenderly-conceived labor of love.

A writer who clearly knows her subject and her audience, mywebfoot paints a convincing, believable fantasy world in which drama fans can indulge their imaginations and even their shipper hearts as they see the unfolding of a ‘real-life’ romance between So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin come to life in the pages of this fanfic.

A tantalizingly addictive ride not only for So Ji Sub and Gong Hyo Jin shippers, but for anyone who took notice of their chemistry in Master’s Sun.
