Hi everyone! This is a new feature that I’ve decided to start, thanks to feedback from Mahima, who shared with me that she hadn’t realized that I have a Patreon page, until I’d mentioned it in my recent post on the Ji Soo bullying controversy.
This made me realize that the various, more unobtrusive ways that I let you guys know about my Patreon page (via the sidebar, blurbs at the end of relevant reviews, and my Watching page) aren’t actually enough to create sufficient awareness, particularly for those of you who don’t visit all that often, or those of you who don’t happen to spend a lot of time exploring the blog.
That inspired me to start a monthly post on:
1. what’s happening on Patreon in a given month,
2. exactly when you can expect to see various Patreon-related reviews in the month,
3. what shows I’m considering for coverage on Patreon, to replace shows that have completed their cycles, and
4. what you can expect, as a patron.
I hope you guys find this helpful &/or informative, and I hope you’ll consider supporting me on Patreon! ❤️
Why I’m on Patreon
My work has been on hold for more than a year now, because of the pandemic, and this is my way of trying to create a viable alternative source of income. As it stands right now, it’s murky and uncertain, whether work can resume for me, and if so, when that might happen.
I love this blog and if I had to switch careers, I would most likely have to quit blogging (those of you who’ve blogged before, or are still blogging now, would know what I mean when I say that blogging takes up a LOT of time 😅). Rather than quit the blog, I decided to try blogging full-time, and that’s where Patreon – and everyone who values what I do on this blog – comes in.
I am very grateful for all the support that has already been given (thank you to all my existing patrons, you guys are the best! 😘). At the same time, the amount raised each month isn’t quite enough to cover my living expenses, and is still quite far from being a proper income, which is why I do hope that my Patreon page will be able to continue growing.
If you value the work that I do here on the blog, please consider supporting my work on Patreon. ❤️
Shows currently covered on Patreon + their tiers
Early Access (US$5): She Would Never Know
Early Access Plus (US$10): +Mr. Queen
VIP (US$15): +Sisyphus: The Myth
VVIP (US$20): +Run On
Ultimate (US$25): +Vincenzo
* Just to be clear, the tier benefits are cumulative, so if you sign up for the Ultimate tier, you wouldn’t only receive episode notes for Vincenzo, you’d receive episodes notes for all the other shows as well!
* I publish one set of episode notes each day, so each show’s episode notes will publish once in 5 days, since I currently cover 5 shows on Patreon. For example, Vincenzo E6 will post today (1 April 2021), and Vincenzo E7 will post in another 5 days, on 6 April 2021.
* For an example of episode notes, they will look much like my group watch episode notes, except without screenshots. You can go here and here, for examples of episode notes. 😊
When Patreon-related reviews will post this month
This month, 3 of the shows I’m covering on Patreon will finish their cycles. Here’s when you can expect to see their reviews:
Run On: 12 April 2021
Mr. Queen: 13 April 2021
She Would Never Know: 20 April 2021
Do stay tuned for those! 😃
* I am admittedly a little nervous about the fact that Mr. Queen’s review is due just one day after Run On’s review, so if I really really need to, I might push Mr. Queen’s review back a bit. If it does get pushed back, it would be for 5 days (one cycle of Patreon notes), till 17 April 2021, and I will announce it on Patreon. But I will do my best to publish as scheduled! 😅
Replacement shows I’m considering
This isn’t yet cast in stone, because I’d need to check out the shows to make sure I like them enough to cover them on Patreon, but here are the ones that I’m considering:
Run On: possibly to be replaced by Navillera
Mr. Queen: possibly to be replaced by Oh! Master (also known as Oh! My Ladylord)
She Would Never Know: possibly to be replaced by Scripting Your Destiny
Other back-up shows I have in mind (in case any of the shortlisted shows don’t make my cut): Beyond Evil, Law School, Hello? It’s Me!
If you have other great shows to suggest, do let me know in the comments! Please do remember to bear in mind their airing schedules, though.. for example, I really wish I could include Undercover as one of the replacement shows, but it only starts airing on 23 April 2021. 😢
Patreon Highlights
If you’re new to my Patreon page, here are a handful of things you might like to know:
1. ALL tiers receive my episode 1 notes for any show that I’m covering on Patreon.
Therefore, if you’re curious about my Vincenzo notes, but aren’t sure whether you’d like them enough to want to join the Ultimate tier, joining the US$1 Adblock tier will give you immediate access to Vincenzo E1 notes. After this, if you wish to upgrade to the Ultimate tier, Patreon would simply charge you the difference, while immediately unlocking all the posts that your new tier entitles you to. That’s exactly what Michelle did, and I’m happy to report that she’s been happy with her decision and experience. 😃
2. The Ultimate tier also receives E1 notes for all shows that I’m watching, INCLUDING shows that I’m NOT covering on Patreon.
This has included E1 notes for shows like True Beauty, Lovestruck in the City, Sweet Home, Shanai Marriage Honey (Japan), Must You Go?, Love In Between (China) and A Thousand Goodnights (Taiwan). I call these posts Early Access Extras, and as a patron on the Ultimate tier, on average, you can expect to see about 2 of these posts each month.
3. You can interact with me and with one another, on Patreon.
There is a comment feature on Patreon, so much like here on the blog, you’d be able to comment on posts and share your thoughts with me and with other patrons. There is also a private message function, so you’d be able to message me directly on Patreon, if there’s something you’d like to talk with me about, but you feel isn’t relevant to the posts on Patreon themselves.
Aside from a web browser, you can also access my Patreon posts and messages on the Patreon app. You can find the Patreon app on Apple’s app store here, or on Google Play here.
4. You can feel safe to move between tiers at any time.
Because you are charged upfront on the 1st of each month, that tier’s privileges will continue to be open to you, even if you choose to move down a tier sometime during the month.
For example, if you were on the Early Access Plus tier, and on the 15th of the month, you decided that you’d like to move down one tier, to the Early Access Tier, you can make that change right away – but because you’ve already paid for Early Access Plus privileges, those will remain open to you until the end of the month. And then you will be charged your new tier rate, at the beginning of the following month.
If you choose to upgrade your tier, you can also do so at any time, and you will simply be charged the difference, eg, US$5, if you’re moving from the Early Access tier, to the Early Access Plus tier, and the additional privileges will be immediately unlocked for you as well. You will then be charged the new rate on the 1st of the following month.
Please let me know if this explanation isn’t clear! 😅
Thank you!
..And that’s about it, for this month’s updates! If you have suggestions for other things that you’d like me to include in these monthly update posts, do let me know in the comments, and I’ll see what I can do, to incorporate them into future posts. I aim to publish future update posts on the first of each month.
Thanks for reading, thanks for your support, and thank you for being here! Big hugs to ya! 🥰❤️😘
Once again, you can find my Patreon page by clicking on this cute lil icon below:
hey hey. I cant wait to support. I love your blog. I’m happy about all the options you have for tiers.
Just a shout out of support! Considering dramas can take about 10-20 hours of your life, I find your reviews so invaluable in helping me decide what to spend my leisure hours on!
She is the best!
You know I am digging it, but I just want to give it a shout out: Vincenzo, Episode 14! When you get there…
Also, I am noting how show is really working the sequencing of series in the 2 episode/week deal.
@BE Absolutely. I realize its mix of seriousness and broad humor doesn’t work for everyone, but i am loving it, and that moment in ep. 14 (you’ll know the one) was swoon-worthy, even to this jaded old heart….
There was a line in a poem that describes show for me, “an inalterable wrongness/that has style.” I suppose it is a show one either loves, loves, loves, or does not care for at all.
Irony for me, most comedy fails for me, but the combo of its hyperbole and absurdity in counterpoint with show’s menace, and with 99% of cast completely over the top, while Song Joong Ki never, not once, leaves his irony laced straight bottom never fails to make me laugh and admire show’s utter audacity.
So I am watching Hello Me. And it is okay to good in parts but honestly for Patreon I don’t think it has enough discussion points. But I am on episode 14 so can’t be too bad? I am part way through the second part of Navillera which seems quite good so far. So that I think is a good shout.
Mouse is another one I am really enjoying despite its bad science poor /incompetent foresenic work but appreciate you are not so keen on gore.
I would love to watch Oh Master because I loved Nana in The ring but we can’t get it in the U.K through Viki or Netflix.
Thanks for weighing in on Hello Me, Shahz!! That’s very useful information! To be honest, I’m personally not extremely drawn to the show (which is why it’s a second tier option and not a first), but was vaguely curious because I’d heard quite a few people comment that they’ve been enjoying the show, and that it’s the drama that brightens up their week. I’ll bump it down the list now! 😉
As for Oh! Master, I’ve found it here on iQIYI, with English subs! iQIYI is perfectly legal and legit, so no worries there. If you’re geo-restricted, use Opera’s VPN, and you should be good to go! 😃
Thank you so much! .I will take a look but I might hang fire until you decide if you are replacing it when Mr Queen ends so I am in sync with Patreon.
I can understand why “Hello me” brightens up people’s week as I seem to catch up on it every week on Netflix. It is a quite pleasant watch and the acting is great but honestly apart from the interesting premise I am not sure I would have much to say/ breakdown.
Really looking forward to what you decide!
It’s good to know that it’s cool with you for a patron to move up and down tiers, kfangurl. I’ve been watching Vincenzo on my own, and not enjoying it as much as some are. Maybe your guide posts and other viewers’ input would enhance the experience? I often find incorporating different perspectives does that. Hmm…
Also helpful to know your publishing schedule. Although, how you keep up with all of the content generation is a wonderful mystery! Well done.
Aw thanks Leslie!! I have to admit that sometimes I barely manage to meet the schedule I set for myself – but the satisfaction of actually meeting my (absolutely self-imposed) posting schedule does help to keep me going! 😆
Yes, feel free to move tiers according to what works for you.. and as for Vincenzo, perhaps the E1 notes, which are already available to you, would help give you an idea of whether you’d like to move tiers? I have been enjoying Vincenzo quite a bit, personally. 😊
I was stuck in the middle of Ep. 3 for a week plus, but with the little bit of encouragement here, I restarted my watch. And…oof! Maybe, maybe… 🤞🏼
I struggled with Vincenzo as well Leslie.. Gave up half way through the second episode. The humour just didn’t land with me at all.
If you have not started Navillera, let yourself go through the second episode before making your decision. It is only 12 episodes, so a manageable show, and certainly characters are more accessible than those in Run On. I do think it is meant for an older audience in many ways; after all, the story is about a 72 year old male retiree who wants to learn ballet, and, at least initially, how his wife, children, and granddaughter react to all that, but imo after four episodes, it does have that cozy feel some K Dramas are so good at, and is a good family or mom and daughter watch (the young male lead is…well sculpted as a ballet dancer most certainly must be).
Thanks for the heads-up, BE! I will calibrate my expectations accordingly. I do love the sound of cozy. 🥰🥰 That’s possibly my favorite type of kdrama, ever. ❤️
Cool. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be checking out Law School (on U.S. Netflix, yay!), both because I like Ryu Hye-young and Kim Bum a lot, and also to do a compare/contrast of dramatized Korean law school with real-life American version of twenty years ago… (okay, I’m sure they’re nothing alike. Still).
Ahaha.. I’ve learned to expect that drama careers are nothing like real life, and that’s helped me on many occasions, in many dramas. Just sayin’ 😉😆
This is a great idea, kfangurl. I like Oh! Master so far. Nana is radiant and dazzling in this one!
Glad you enjoy the updates, Sean!! And that’s great to hear, that you’re enjoying Oh! Master.. radiant and dazzling sounds quite lovely! 🤩
It’s a beautiful show, kfangurl 😊
I’m loving all these assurances that I’ve picked the right show – even before I’ve started watching it myself! 😆
