Review: The Best Thing [China]

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Low-key and sweet, this show is basically a perfect little escape from the real world.

Everything’s very prettily filmed, and our characters are basically nice, good, decent people slowly falling in love, as their paths cross.

As a bonus, Show also manages to offer a gentle glimpse into the world of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) without being preachy or heavy-handed about it.

Perfect as a cozy drama nightcap, in my experience. 🥰

Review: The Princess Royal [China]

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Show gets off to a strong start, with an interesting premise and a promising OTP, I was soon fully sucked in and very much on board for this OTP reunion.

However, in my opinion, some of Show’s narrative choices in its middle-to-late stretch don’t do it any favors. I found this stretch a lot less interesting than our first half.

I found this to be several steps down from our strong start, but Show does deliver on the happy ending promised, so there’s that? 😅

Review: My Journey To You [China]

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Show is, for a good stretch, dark, stylish drama crack that I inhaled with glee.

I found the story and the story world fascinating, I felt invested in our main characters, and it felt like Show had a solid, smart grip on the story that it wanted to tell. I genuinely loved all the twists and turns that Show served up in each rollercoaster of an episode.

However, I do think that Show’s weaknesses become more apparent, when you get into the later episodes. Sometimes plot logic took a beating; sometimes details didn’t add up completely. Also, I feel like Show’s handling of the finale is likely to be divisive.

All that said, I found this to be a solid ride, overall, and don’t regret investing my drama hours – and my feelings! And my brain cells! – in this one.

Review: Love Between Fairy And Devil [China]

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Show is not without its rough edges, but it works out to be more than enough slurpy fun, and more than enough of an epic love story, that I was more than happy to just roll with the stuff that didn’t grab me as much, in our story, to get to – yes – our happy ending.

Esther Yu is as cute as a button in this, which is fantastic, but it’s Dylan Wang who really shines for me, as our titular devil. He shows way more range than I’d thought he had, AND he looks amazing, in an almost surreal sort of way, through the entire journey.

My eyes; they were quite pleased. 🤩😁

Best of all, this OTP shares pretty excellent chemistry, from the bickery silly stuff, to the swoony, skinship end of the scale, and their loveline makes for a pretty great backbone to our story.

Very solidly worthwhile, in my opinion.
