On the upside, Liu Yi Fei makes for a very charismatic and compelling protagonist; I was very much absorbed by this story, and willing to be a fly on her wall.
On the not-so-upside, our story moves fast and has many arcs to it, so much so that it can actually feel like a bit much, sometimes, being a fly on said wall. 😅
Show also makes some narrative decisions that I personally didn’t prefer, which did add a bit, to my sense of fatigue.
All that said, I thought this one was very solid and worthwhile, and would recommend it.
A gentle slice-of-life story, with an earthy-yet-squeeworthy OTP at the center, and beautiful yet rustic views of gorgeous Yunnan? So much Yes, for me, personally. 🥰
Watching this show is like going on a long vacation with these characters, where we get to be a silent member of the community, sitting in on their conversations, while lounging on their couches, like we’re part of this found family.
Sure, there are bound to be arcs that you like less (I personally wasn’t that interested in Mr. Ma’s arc), but there’s almost definitely something for everyone, among Show’s various arcs.
Plus, Show’s overall vibe is so warm and cozy, that it feels relatively easy to roll over any bumps in the watch experience.
As a bonus, Show shines a pretty educational spotlight on the topic of rural displacement, while putting faces to the phenomenon, and telling that story with heart. I liked that.
You do need to be in the right mood for this, so yes, you may not want to watch this right now. But when you do find yourself in that right mood, this is quite blissful indeed. 🥰 Continue reading →
On the upside, Show is gorgeous to look at, and features two beautiful leads in Crystal Liu and Chen Xiao.
Best of all, our leads are both strong characters in their own rights, and who also share a lot of crackly chemistry; y’know, the kind that threatens to leap off your screen and slap you in the face. 🔥
On top of that, Show is a proponent of female independence AND female friendships. How rare! 🤩
On the downside, Show loses some of that excellent dramatic tension in its second half, which can be a damper. I also didn’t jive so well with Show’s sense of humor, a lot of the time.
Still a very solid watch overall, though. Watch it for the leads, if nothing else. 😁
