This is something new that I’m trying out.
This is for those of you who want to discuss spoilers, from a “I’ve seen the show and WOW now I’m noticing all these other details in retrospect” sort of angle.
Here’s a Spoiler Zone for you to dig as deep as you’d like, into spoiler territory, WITHOUT the need for spoiler tags or other warnings.
My only request is, PLEASE BE EXTRA MINDFUL OF WHERE YOU ARE COMMENTING. Meaning, please don’t get mixed up, and start talking spoilers in the Open Thread, which could seriously mar the watch experience for a new viewer, OR, a viewer who would really prefer to have the rewatch feel as fresh as possible.
Other than that, READER BEWARE: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
For the main discussion of episodes 1 & 2, which only deals with spoilers up to the point of the group watch, go here.
ENJOY YOUR SPOILER ZONE, MY FRIENDS! ❤️
Who is the guy with a scar watching Yu Xuan on the laptop? Is it LZW or the creepy dude?
This is my second watch, so I am also following the story from LZW’s point of view.
Definitely LZW, in the 1st episode right? He has a scar right on his temple from the car accident in 2003. 😭 He’s looking at her instagram, because that’s all he can do, while he wait for ‘his funeral’ to happen, for Yu Xuan to be distraught and travel back, and get to know LZW in 1998… before he can come and introduce himself! 💔
I’m on LZW’s pov too, it hurts! :/
Thank you! On my second watch, I think of this drama as the story of Yu Xuan and Zi Wei.
This show is new to me so I won’t frequent this thread but this is a great idea!
@Beez Aw yay, I’m glad you like the idea! It was Merij who thought of it as a potential solution, when folks on the My Mister thread started feeling antsy about wanting to discuss spoilers. 😁 Thereafter, it just seemed like a natural extension, to try it out for this show too! ❤️
Yes, it was @MariaF’s idea — with a strong endorsement by Eda — on the My Mister open thread, but then you and I put some thought into the mechanics of how and where. Here vs. Patreon, etc.
I had already goofed on the open thread for MM and was therefore motivated.
Avoiding spoilers is important for any show, but this one is an special challenge.
@merij1 I so appreciate you brainstorming this one with me, to figure out the ins and outs of it all!
I think we all need a bit of time to get used to figuring out what constitutes a spoiler and therefore should be moved to the Spoiler Zones. You’re not alone in goofing, is what I’m trying to say! We’ll get there! ❤️
On my re-watch, I have this head-canon where Li Zi Wei’s character is Li Da Ren’s cousin? :O They are a similar age in 2021 now, and also ITWY had the same writers/ prod team as SD1D!! 😛 I sure see the similarities between the two! 🥰
Cannot believe I once AGAIN missed Cake-Dude/ LZW on the bus behind HYX! Wth! 😅
I’m also realizing, as I take in LZW’s character (1998) with knowing eyes now….. that Hwang In-Yeop would make an excellent LZW in the k-drama remake. His Han Seo-Jun character in True Beauty is pretty much a Korean-LZW: a gremlin who rides a motorcycle, can play excellent basketball, sings, and is 30 IRL but makes a very convincing High-Schooler! ❤
Ps. the re watch wasn’t as easy as I had thought, knowing what all I did know, in hindsight, this time. It makes YX’s silly decision to break-up hurt *even* more. 💔THEN I realized.
The first time we watch the story, is from HYX’s perspective who doesn’t know the ‘future’. The second time we watch it, it’s from LZW’s perspective…. the guy who went back to 2003 with the knowledge of what all was to happen in the ‘future’, living a life away from the life he had called his own, from 2012 to 2017. 🤯🤯🤯
The re-watch experience of this show is encoded within the show itself, and it kinda blows my mind. Ooof! 😭
Yah. It’s hard to imagine a show that lends itself better to a group re-watch!
My gal and I did notice Cake-Dude sitting behind her on the bus, but I know there will be so many other details that only catch my eye in hindsight.
However, I haven’t started my re-watch yet, so they will have to wait till I do.
Similar to Nirvana in Fire. I cried hot tears from the first moments of the rewatch. The flashbacks and the feels of Yuxuan missing Quansheng land super hard cos we know and love the characters already. Whereas the first time we watch it’s just yet another girl missing her boy who broke up with her. Oh oops he actually died, that’s tragic. But we don’t FEEL her grief. Now we do!
interesting that you’re rewatching now from Lee Ziwei’s perspective, I hadn’t thought about that! Must have been terribly terribly painful indeed to live away from his life as Quansheng for so many years. In fact he had to live apart from Yuxuan from 2003 to 2019!! He existed concurrently as the first LZW who first jumped into Quansheng’s body, using Uncle to keep tabs. That’s a loooot of dedication.
this is actually my second attempt at a rewatch, the first time I couldn’t make it all the way through cos the characters go through so many hard things. I think the group watch will help.
Interestingly, since I know what’s going to happen (much like LZW), and I’m re-watching it as per KFG’s schedule… time feels dilated. Like the episodes are still 13, but it feels longer.
His 16 years to meet her again, while what was 2 years for her…. is definitely feeling more exemplified to me (& the realization much more heartbreaking), as I follow this show on a weekly basis now.
I was on YX’s POV the first time; the reunion happened within 7 hours of me binge-watching. Instead, it would take me 3/4 weeks now, for the same reunion.🤯
elaine, i watched it quite a while ago, and my recollection is that she was offered a job in china and she took it, thus leaving him.(not another girl missing her boy who broke up with her) also, from what i remember, he wanted to follow her and she objected. he even got her an engagement ring but on the way to the airport the car breaks down. and my recollection might be fuzzy, but i remember thinking what right does she have to whine, while she anyway broke up the relationship and left for china. i mean she decided to live her life without him anyway… i was kind of upset with her for that decision.
Yes I remember, I was referring to episode 1 where the viewer makes certain assumptions about the situation. First you think it’s just a breakup, then you find out he died, and then you find out that she had treated him so harshly and he died while trying to chase after her to Shanghai… which compounds her regret and sadness.
I appreciate how the storytelling peels back in layers.
