A Prezzie! For Me!

Guess what, y’all?? Today, I received a prezzie! A BIG one!

Are you ready?

Its.. *drum roll please* … A whole post! In MY. HONOR.

I kid you not.

I’ve just picked my jaw off the floor long enough to put together a post to tell y’all about it.

Dream High OST – Someday (IU)

The other day, I was chatting with a couple of my friends on Twitter, and I casually said that I’m only very, very mildly in the kpop loop.

It was a throwaway remark, really, but that’s when dewaanifordrama – Twitter pal, blogger and kpop aficionado – popped in to offer to introduce me to the best of kpop.

In the hope that sometime, someday – hur hur, didja see what I did there, with the song choice for this post? 😉 – I’d be as fully on the kpop train as the rest of my Twitter buds.

She even offered to customize a playlist for me, according to the kind of music I usually go for. I thought that was super sweet of her, but I declined, coz really, that’s a heck of a lot of work! Instead, I asked for random tweets directing me to various MVs and dewaani obliged.

I spent the morning watching MV after MV as she kept slipping them my way. I told her which ones I liked more, and every couple of days after that, she’d slip me one more. And then one more.

And then today, we had this conversation, after I’d checked out yet another MV that dewaani had sweetly sent my way:

And that was it.

I thought nothing of it, and went about doing other stuff, and then, a couple of hours later, dewaani tweeted me, announcing that she’d made me a present:

Omo! 74 – SEVENTY-FOUR!!! – MVs, tailored to my tastes, wrapped up in the lovely package of an entire blog post dedicated to me? Just coz I’d casually remarked that I didn’t know much about kpop?

Wow.

What did I say, about the dramaverse being filled with lovely people?

THANK YOU, dewaani! You rawk, you seriously do. Not only do you know the ins and outs of kpop like no one else that I know, you’re so sweet and generous to boot! ♥ Saranghae!

Alrighty.. Are y’all just about ready now, for me to unveil my big prezzie?

Here we go! You can check out my monster playlist prezzie here.

Yep, it’s a biggie, alright. It’s gonna take me (and probably you too!) a good long while to get from one end to the other. But it’s gonna be such a lovely ride, dontcha think? ♥

Oh certainly, if you’re still watching the drama, you should hide from spoilers so that you can enjoy the viewing experience without pre-coloring your perspective ^^ That’s why I only read general reactions for shows that I haven’t watched and have some intention of checking out. I skim write-ups like mad to avoid accidentally reading a spoiler 😉

I have one of their songs on the playlist, “Only Hard for Me”. They’re a hip-hop group who are still experimenting with their style. They’ve tried a bunch of stuff. I don’t think that all their stuff will be your cup of tea. You might like their “Celebrate”. I really loved their “Nod Along” from this year. They have pretty good English, and compose a lot of their own stuff. They’re under Jungle Entertainment, which Tiger JK, pretty much THE Korean rap and hip-hop scene guru, founded, but just left. bustered also loves them…it’s where her pen name comes from because they are the Most Incredible Busters.

kfangurl

Ooh.. the inside scoop on bustered’s handle!! ;D It all makes perfect sense now!

I checked out all 3 songs you mentioned, & I like them, though I don’t LOVE them.. I liked Only Hard for Me the most of the 3.. The other 2 weren’t bad either, but in terms of sticking, Only Hard for Me has the highest stick factor of the 3. You definitely seem to have gotten a pretty good sense of what I prefer, dewaani!!

I must’ve missed that! What’s the scoop on your handle, dewaani?? Mine’s pretty straightforward (and therefore kinda boring?) so I guess no explanation’s needed there! XD

I’m traveling for work this week and next, so time to check out my playlist prezzie is not on my side, which is why I’m far from being done.. Just so you know, I’m definitely getting back into it!

Just have to share this funny tidbit with you. I was on the second loop of the playlist before I realised that “It’s You” by Super Junior-M is actually in Chinese! 🙂 Ha ha!
Once my brain recognised this I was pleasantly surprised with how good their pronounciation is.

The new one is on the new Super Junior-M album…but the old one that was on my playlist is the Korean one done by Super Junior, and that one is in Korean ^^

Ah ha ha!! Neorago (along with Sorry Sorry) was my first sweet introduction to kpop, years before I dared to step into the world of kpop or kdramas at all. I saw Donghae and Siwon in Ariel Lin’s Fireflies music video. (In case you’re curious http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iizJNOCzr9M) and that’s where I first saw them LOL!! I proceeded to ignore kpop other than these two songs for 4 years, haha! Your playlist is great – I’m sure I’ll find some other things to try out.

Ah, k-pop… the never ending ‘bog’. You step in and get stuck for good, so beware! LOL!

I’ve been listening to k-pop as long as I’ve been watching dramas, got hooked at the ‘hello, what is this music?!’ My first Korean solo singer ‘love’ was Alex, which lead me to Clazziquai (you might like both, me thinks) and my first k-pop group was Shinhwa (yup, accidentally started with the ‘classic’, heh). Since then I’ve listened to and liked several dozens of groups and singers and I own an embarrasing pile of physical albums too. I tend to like vocal groups and solo singers (ballads!!) but I have my favourite idol groups too (solely based on the music though, these kids are far too young to drool over, LOL!) I never used to care for hip-hop/rap but I tend to love the Korean versions, go figure. I’m pretty sure it’s because of my love for the language, it just flows. ^^

That playlist dewaani posted will keep you busy for a while. Btw, the 1st song in the list, by Yozoh is called 화분 (flowerpot, pot). It’s the title song from her 2nd album 나의 쓸모 (the literal translation is My Use, but I’m sure the meaning is probably something more lyrical) which just dropped yesterday.

Couple of my current favourites (what? 74 new songs is not THAT much ;P)

‘Coffee Shop’ by B.A.P – the best rookie of 2012, imho but then I’m a bit biased…. It’s such a mellow, laid back song, perfect for summer. These kids are pretty versatile when it comes to genres.
http://youtu.be/6VzuX88Dc_g

‘Baby’ by John Park (he’s such a cutie) – another nice, mellow, summery song *g* I just love his voice! And the new album is GREAT.
http://youtu.be/hZU5jcrubjE

‘From Mark’ by Ha Dong Qn/하동균 – He’s been around for a while and this is an older song but I just discoved him not long ago though Immortal Song 2 – awesome voice! Anyway the song gives me shivers, in a good way. 🙂
http://youtu.be/rDAkBQswLHs

Ok, this is the last one… I promise. ‘슬피 우는 새/Sadly Crying Bird’ by Outsider – The Speedstar is back! LOL! It’s been 3 years since his last album (did his military service and got married during that time). He’s what they call a ‘speed rapper’, though this is pretty slow for him (want to hear him really go at it? try this: http://youtu.be/h5b6wdsxV3Y ^^).

I guess I should say, Clazziquai Project is what everyone has been recommending. DJ Clazzi, Alex, and Horan are the members. Horan and Alex have done some duet work, Alex has some solo work, and DJ Clazzi also has some great solo stuff. One of my personal favourites of his is “Love & Hate”. I also really love the OST that Alex did for Hyun Bin and Tang Wei’s film, “Late Autumn” – “If I Could Turn It Back”. Alex and Horan also did a lovely OST piece for the So Ji Sub and Han Hyo Joo film “Always”. The OST is called “Blossoming”.

kfangurl

Checked ’em out, and I like the rhythmic feel of “If I Could Turn It Back” – it’s got a somewhat dreamy, jazzy, laidback feel which I dig.. “Love & Hate” isn’t so much my alley, but I like the quirky cutesy in “Blossoming” ^^ Thanks!!

I don’t know why but I just had this feeling their music might be to our liking. *g*

Clazziquai or Clazziquai Project, as it’s also called, is an experimental group. They combine several genres in their music. They haven’t released much in recent years though as the members have been concentrating on solo projects. Alex and Horan, the vocalists have also been in couple of dramas. Alex was actually in Pasta, he played Kim San…… the food critic? 🙂 I haven’t seen Pasta myself.

I like their earlier songs much more than what they’ve done after 2007 and I own the first three albums; Instant Pig, Love child of the Century and Color Your Soul. Alex’s first album, My Vintage Romance was one of the first Korean music cd’s I ever bought. I still love it.

Especially love the concept of the magnet couple in the 2nd one, so cute!! From Mark is quite haunting, and I rather liked it too.

Speed rapping is a new concept to me, but I like how it sounds.. I think the style is quite cool when paired with the traditional instruments like these 2 links that you posted. Somehow it helps to soften the entire feel, which is nice.

I haven’t checked out the other ones you mentioned, but it sounds like I should at least seek out Classiquai 😉

Weeell, I wouldn’t say I’m all that knowledgeable but I sorta keep tabs on the scene and actively follow what my faves are doing. *g*

Ha Dong Qn was a revelation. Apparently he is rather camera shy and hasn’t really performed live in several years. I haven’t seen the full IS2 epi he was in (I’ve only seen the clip – OMG! Guy can sing! http://youtu.be/1Os3E9wiaw4), but I’ve read that he was very visibly nervous before he started singing.

Shinhwa…. one of the original idol groups and still going strong. XD These guys have been together for 15 years. It’s pretty long for idols. They have several classic k-pop songs that other groups like to cover. If you decide to check these guys up, you just have to see the original versions of the likes of ‘Eusha, Eusha’, T.O.P, Brand New, Wild Eyes, Perfect Man… I think most of those are still around @ YT. One of my favourite recent ones was when they won on a music show, and Min Woo was trying to thank the fans, and the members kept on kissing his cheeks, and he didn’t even stop talking. It was adorkable!

Oh they are. I didn’t share any on your mix-tape though because I don’t think their music is quite your style…but I could be wrong…”This Love” is AMAZING!!! But it’s def much more a dance track than anything chill and laid back. Same with their come back promoted track from last year “Venus”. Some of their B-side tracks on their albums you might like more.

If you want to give Shinhwa another shot, here are some tracks to try from their two latest albums that aren’t dance tracks: From “The Return” album – “Hurts”, “Move with Me” and from “The Classic” album – “New Me”, “웃다가… “, “I Gave”.

kfangurl

Checked ’em out too, & while the ones from “The Return” didn’t appeal as much, the ones from “The Classic” were all quite nice, actually! So.. I guess I could like *some* of their stuff? Which is better than not liking *any* I guess? ^^

OMG, yes! They have no shame, LOL! You see one of the embarrasingly silly pics that Eric posts and think ‘yup, that’s uri Fearless Leader and Shinhwa Co. CEO’. XD They love to do something giggle worthy when they’ve got the cameras pointed at them, heh. This promotion round it was kisses, the last it was playing with other members ears…

One of the things I love about them is that they may tease each other relentlessly but you can always sort of feel the affection and closeness.

They really are shameless! I love it! I remember watching one video where Minwoo showed them his technique of farting…it was hilarious. Good old Korean bathroom humour. And the funny thing was that they were recording it all for us to see! I just about died with laughter. I think it was Hye Sung or maybe Junjin though who was not super impressed. I also really loved this one video I saw of them all singing along to other K-pop songs while driving in their van. So funny!

Most of Shihnwa’s songs are dance tracks but I happen to love that sort of music. 🙂 I had an inkling they might not be your cuppa though. They do have several lovely ballads/slower songs too. ‘Once in a Lifetime’ is one of my all time favourites http://youtu.be/znxvcHy0f9A. The lyrics are so beautiful, I’ve never been able to sing it without tearing up, the big sap I am.^^ ‘On the Road’ is another one, it was dedicated to their fans.

But yes, they are absolutely hilarious in variety and in music based talkshows like The Beatless Code too.

There was this video of them singing Once in a Lifetime in their 10th anniversary concert (not sure if it’s still around) and it was kinda awesome to watch the audience sing it with them and the guys all in tears. *sniffle*

On the Road also has lovely, meaningfull lyrics. I seem to recall it was their gift to the fans who patiently waited 4 years for them to conclude their military service (they all left at different times so their hiatus as a group took that long).

Yes, isn’t it a super cool prezzie?!? 😀 I’m just getting my kpop toes a little wet.. I don’t foresee myself falling deep into the kpop wave anytime soon.. I find most of the offerings very pleasant, but it’s rare that a song actually hooks me. I do have several singers that I genuinely like, though.

Like IU. I really do like her.. Though I haven’t heard much of her music, I really like her voice. It’s got a sweet huskiness to it that I find unique and quite lovely. I love the song that I used in this post, and it’s now looping on repeat ^^

As for writing about my favorites on the playlist, I’ll keep that suggestion in mind 🙂 Let’s see how I do while I poke around exploring my prezzie. It’s a whopper of a present, with so many songs and artists to explore, that I have no clue when I’ll actually finish! XD

…oh?.there’s this saying “once you k-pop you’ll never stop”….and it really happens to me..;) the first awakening of my k-pop music thing mostly came from OSTs of every of Korean dramas i’ve watched…soon, i’ll find out myself surfing the name of the singer and the song and that leads to a never ending search…then i saw DBSK, now TVXQ..and some Bi Rain’s songs and se7en’s..hope you’ll find some songs from them that you can add to your playlist..

kfangurl

Reply to  evez

Lol! I hadn’t heard that saying before, but I can totally see how that’s the case for a lot of people! ;D I do love a lot of songs from the OSTs, and I did seek out a few of the artists, but in a fairly mild fashion. And there were also always more and more OSTs coming out to jostle for my attention ^^

I’ve heard a number of Rain’s songs, and Se7en too. Again, I found their stuff pleasant, but nothing that really hooked me into wanting to put it on repeat. That’s where I am, with a lot of kpop.. I find it appealing and pleasant, but it’s just rare that something hooks me enough, to make me want to listen to it again, and then again. This is possibly partly why the ladies have been sending me recommendations – to see what sticks 😉

Oh…that saying?…i got that from the teaser of V channel, where in it features k-pop music…I frequently watched that channel to keep me update on the latest k-pop music….so sad you didn’t seem to like se7en’s song..but I do, seems like the type of music you fancy is Clazziquai’s variety. ..nonetheless, I have fondness to Classiquai’s music too, this band combines electronic music and jazz…so kinda pleasurable type of music to hear..as mentioned by Timescout, Shinhwa is a classic band originally under SM Entertainment but now under Shinhwa Co…all six members are still breathtaking even in their 30’s..and they contributed pretty much first-rate music to k-pop…you might want to give it a try and add them in your playlist…and se7en’s also?…kekeke…;)happy listening!

Reply to  evez

Se7en’s songs are pleasant on the ears, so no, I don’t hate him or anything! It’s just, his music hasn’t hooked me. Not the ones I’ve heard anyway, and I do qualify that I haven’t heard all that many. I can see where his music might be similar to Classiquai’s, in that they share a similar electronic sensibility, but somehow, I find that the Classiquai songs I’ve heard have more interesting hooks and quirks. Of course, this is just me scratching the surface, so I might change my mind later 😉

Y’know, I’m pretty stuck on the OSTs myself! I guess I just never made the next step, which is to kpop that isn’t connected to a drama. I find that the OSTs are a lovely way to keep connected to a well-loved drama.. Just listening to some of the songs can take me right back into the thick of a drama, and I love that <3

Agree about preferring OSTs 🙂 So, what have you found, other than OSTs that does actually stick? Often it’s a voice that will draw me in, but the lyrics and music have to also draw me in to make me listen to it over and over. Just because it’s from an OST doesn’t mean it will stick, and vice versa. Not sure if my selection of songs will match you, but I can search amongst what I have if I know what to leave out 🙂 I’m reviewing the threads here to see….

These are the ones I love and can vouch for! SHINee Ring Ding Dong and Replay, DBSK(aka TVXQ) Mirotic, Super Junior’s No Other and Neorago (It’s You), Jay Park’s Joah, Henry’s Trap, BoA’s Only One (I love the choreography done for this, it’s by Napoleon and Tabitha, if you’ve seen So You Think You Can Dance you’d be familiar with them, they do awesome hip-hop choreography! There are clips with Taemin (SHINee) and Eunhyuk (Super Junior) dancing a duet piece in the middle of the song)

LYn sings that awesome OST song from Moon Embracing the Sun 😀 I like Jinwoon’s You Walking Towards Me as well. Many of the artists, I’m familiar with the name but not very familiar with their music (i.e. IU, I only know what she’s sung in the DH OST), lots to check out 🙂

I like more pop in general, but for kpop I feel more open to rapping and crossover pop/hip-hop. Regarding the comment about Korean language being good for music, I wonder if with the verb and adjective conjugation it’s easier to rhyme – not just at the ends of words but to balance rhyming mid-phrase… to me as well, it’s very pleasant to the ear 😀 Rapping seems softer than in English, the same goes for Mandarin, the rapping is softer than English. Also, I think because Korean has the flexibility to switch up the subject and object and the verb/descriptive emphasis is at the end, the lines feel more emotionally strong.

Sounds like you’ve got a fair number of favorites in kpop! I’ve heard of most of these folks, but have only heard a small sprinkling of the music. The other day, dewaani shared Mirotic with me on Twitter. I liked it well enough, though it didn’t hook me as much as the ladies hoped 😉

I do love a lot of the lovely vocals and music that we get on OSTs.. And I do confess to getting acquainted with the singers either through their acting or singing on OSTs. I first encountered IU in Dream High too, and I am quite taken with the lovely husky quality of her voice. I’ve only heard a few things from her, though. The other day dewaani shared one of IU’s MVs with me, so now I can say I’ve heard a little more of her outside of the Dream High OST. I do really love the song I used in this post – it’s so laidback and breezy, and it’s got a nice rhythm that hooks. It also shows off the husky, indie quality of her voice, and I’m now listening to it on repeat as I type this ^^

I do think that the language itself is a factor in how it translates into music. Even spoken, different languages have different qualities about them, eg some are more melodic, and others more guttural. Somehow the Korean syllables sound quite lovely when translated into music. And yes, I do find the rapping of a softer (vs harder) nature in Korean.

I like a mix of ballads and epic-style music, (I’m making this term up based on the sort of music that feel like it carries the meaning of life, a lot of story, and that can always move you.) For me that’s usually strong ballads, but if the voice is one I love, it will vary way more widely. I tend to prefer a more straightforward style – not that I don’t love unique voices and singing styles but the artists that move me most will be those that combine emotion with great technical singing. (as far as I can tell, that is… mostly-perfect pitch, not straining, good control. Power is awesome if they know how to sprinkle it in the right way.) If they have emotion or color without this solid, basic quality and clarity in their singing, I will get too annoyed. If it’s too stylistic I will probably get annoyed. I like to hear clear words (again, the lyrics are a focus for me). Not sure if that would make me a purist or something LOL…

That song from IU from DH is great 🙂 I still listen to it off and on. If you like that, I will start there as a guideline to find you other things. In the reviews I was able to read, your favorite song on the OST corresponded to my favorite, i.e. J-Min’s Stand Up, LYn’s song from Moon Embracing the Sun, etc.. Do you have a list of rejected songs (that don’t stick, not that you don’t like them at all) so I can eliminate those? My list won’t have most of the rap/hip-hop, I’d be more likely to send you ballads and upbeat happy songs anyways.

I always choose those artists that I feel are technically competent at singing live – have you watched Muzit or Immortal Song? These kind of filter those that can’t sing live automatically (or make those that might be able to, look bad on a bad day, hehe). I’ll send you some of my favorites, the ones I listen to on repeat month after month after month (to go to sleep on or to listen to in the car. Will note the mood category when I send it 🙂

Um. I find your question really hard to answer, tbh.. Yes, I like IU’s song. I like her sweetly husky voice quality and I like the vibe and feel of the song too. Really nice 🙂

Other than that, I don’t have a made-up set of rules in terms of what songs I like.. Er.. I just.. like what I like? I know that’s not terribly specific, but I like to also think that I’m fairly open to different types of music. Since this is an experiment after all, every singer/song gets a fair chance ^^ If I happen to like someone’s sound, that’s cool, and if not, oh well, there’s always more good stuff to check out ^^

Well, isn’t this an apt post for me! JUST LAST NIGHT I made my way through this list as a Kpop newbie: http://www.buzzfeed.com/kathyl14/12-reasons-you-should-start-listening-to-kpop-a5it . Which was fun and enlightening and hilarious at points 🙂

Before I found that guide (and now the super mega foxy awesome hot post prezzie of yours, thank you!!!) I was kind of intimidated by Kpop. I mean I have enough problems with English pop/hip-hop, whose to say I would like it better because it is Korean? But…it just is better (mostly)!

With all this guidance I simply can’t go wrong in making my way into the big wonderful world of Kpop 🙂 Thanks again!!!

HAHA! That’s a fun post alright! XD But the vote for actual, solid, meaty guidance definitely goes to dewaani!! She and her partner in crime, bustered, have got several more awesome playlists on their blog, so if/when you get to the end of the playlist dewaani made me and are ready for more, just poke around their blog and I’m sure you’ll find more awesome waitin’ for ya! ;D

I do agree that I find quite a bit of the k-stuff nicer than the English stuff.. Like the hip-hop song from Big Bang that dewaani shared with me today. It was just more pleasant to my ears than English hip-hop. Some people also say that they find the Korean language just lends itself better to music.. I don’t know if that’s true, but I do agree that when a Korean song is good, it’s really quite gorgeous on the ears ^^
