Review: The Princess Royal [China]

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Show gets off to a strong start, with an interesting premise and a promising OTP, I was soon fully sucked in and very much on board for this OTP reunion.

However, in my opinion, some of Show’s narrative choices in its middle-to-late stretch don’t do it any favors. I found this stretch a lot less interesting than our first half.

I found this to be several steps down from our strong start, but Show does deliver on the happy ending promised, so there’s that? 😅

Review: Amidst A Snowstorm Of Love [China]

THE SHORT VERDICT:

In my opinion, Show’s mainly an unhurried slice-of-life romance, meshed with our characters’ journeys of self-discovery, meshed with a good dose of sports drama, meshed with a touch of prodigal son.

Opinions on this show are very divided, but if you are able to enjoy China’s brand of romance-in-the-everyday (a sub-genre that I find I’ve grown to love), then you’ve got a pretty good chance of enjoying this one.

Wu Lei and Zhao Jin Mai are both very good in this, and I found that I grew fond of not only their characters, but many other characters in this story world as well, to the point that I felt sorry to say goodbye, when I got to the end. 🥲

A solidly enjoyable watch overall, and no, you don’t have to know or love snooker, in order to enjoy this one. 😉

Review: Reset [China]

THE SHORT VERDICT:

Reset is a time loop fantasy mystery-thriller that manages to be so much more than the sum of its parts.

It’s smartly written, such that the fantasy mystery remains interesting and intriguing all the way through, yet at the same time, Show demonstrates a surprising amount of heart and emotional heft.

That heart and emotional heft is what lifts this watch experience from simply being interesting and fascinating, to become something more engaging, thought-provoking, and even a little personal, as we start to feel for our various characters.

A cracky gem of a show that manages to engage both the heart and mind in equal measure. Very well done.
