Review: When The Phone Rings

THE SHORT VERDICT:

When Show is at its best, it is cracktastically good.

A tight narrative; sparky, smoldering OTP tension; cliffhangers that kept me on the edge of my seat; it felt like Show had it all. 🥲

Unfortunately, when Show is not at its best, it’s quite disappointing indeed.

Show makes some perplexing narrative decisions in its finale stretch, which I found disappointing not because of their makjang flavor, but because of how these decisions missed the mark of what had made Show so compelling to begin with.

However, Show’s still worth a look for its fantastic first half, in my opinion. 🔥

Review: Twinkling Watermelon

THE SHORT VERDICT:

As warm and feel-good as it is poignant and heart-tugging, Twinkling Watermelon is a show where its sum is definitely greater than its parts.

We’ve got lovable characters, endearing relationships, relatable angst, and vicarious joy, all packaged into one little drama world, and we even get a blithely breezy soundtrack, to score it all.

Show’s greatest strength, is how it consistently serves up all of the warm, fuzzy feels, while expertly getting us to care about these characters.

An underrated gem.

Review: My Roommate Is A Gumiho

THE SHORT VERDICT:

The great thing about My Roommate is a Gumiho, is how fresh it manages to feel, despite it appearing, at first glance, to be like just about any other romcom dotting Dramaland. Yes, there are tropes, but most of the time, they’re there to be turned on their heads.

In particular, I love our female lead, who’s anything but a Candy. She might appear rather goofy on the surface, but she’s gracious and classy, and has such a good head on her shoulders, that it’s hard not to love her.

I feel that Hye Ri and Jang Ki Yong are well-cast and well-directed in this; I enjoyed them both very much, and I feel that their chemistry works really well. As a bonus, Kang Han Na is wonderful in this, as a ditzy ex-gumiho. This is literally my favorite role of Kang Han Na’s, to date.

I found the ending a touch underwhelming, especially when compared to how solidly the rest of the show stacks up, but overall, it’s still a very enjoyable drama that I’d recommend!

Flash Review: She is WOW

To be perfectly honest, She is WOW is pretty different from your typical kdrama.

Irreverent and saucy much of the time, and dark, bittersweet and even a little bit mysterious the rest of the time, this show is not for everyone.

I picked up this drama coz of the modest measure of positive buzz that followed it while it aired, and the bottom line, for me, is that while I don’t think this drama is quite my cup of tea, in its own irreverent way, it manages to still be a thought-provoking show that asks some hard questions.
