Open Thread: Nirvana In Fire Episodes 1, 2 & 3

Welcome to the Open Thread, everyone! I have to admit that I am slightly intimidated by the thought of doing episode notes for a show as intricate and dense as Nirvana In Fire, but I’m excited that you guys are excited to watch this show together, so I’ll do my best!

Here are our usual ground rules, before we begin:

1. Please don’t post spoilers in the Open Thread, except for events that have happened in the show, up to this point. I repeat: no spoilers for future episodes please! It is possible to use the new spoiler tags, of course, but it would be better to refrain from discussing spoilers.

This is also because the spoilers are still visible in the email notification that you receive, of the comment in question. We have quite a few first-time viewers among us, and we don’t want to spoil anything for anyone.

2. Discussions on this thread don’t have to close when newer threads open, just so you know! But as we progress through our group watch, please keep the discussions clear of spoilers from future episodes, so that future readers coming to this thread won’t be accidentally spoiled. Does that make sense?

Without further ado, here are my reactions to this set of episodes; have fun in the Open Thread, everyone! ❤️

Announcement: New commenting system!

Hey everyone,

As you can tell from this post’s title, I’ve switched to a new commenting system for the blog, and I’m hopeful that this will make conversations on the blog a lot more fun to navigate!

Also, this feels timely, since a number of you let me know that the edit button for comments has stopped appearing for you. Not to worry, my friends! This new commenting system has a built-in editing feature, so you’ll be able to edit your comments for up to 15 minutes after posting them, just like the previous one.

The new commenting system is fairly easy to navigate instinctively, but I thought I’d highlight a couple of things, just to make it even easier for everyone.

Dropped: Oh! Master [Oh! My Ladylord]

I really did want to love this one, you guys.

When so many other viewers were criticizing Show for how old-fashioned it was, and how they felt there was no chemistry between Lee Min Ki and Nana, I felt somewhat differently, and therefore thought that I’d be able to stick with this one to the end.

After all, the major criticisms that I’d heard, were of things that weren’t bothering me the same way, during my watch.

That said, I’ve found my own reasons to drop this one, and now, after 9 episodes, I’m calling it quits.

Open Thread: Money Flower Episodes 23 & 24

Welcome to the Open Thread, everyone! Can you believe that we are already at the end of the epic journey that Money Flower’s taken us on? 😱 I feel as wistful as Pil Joo looks, in this screenshot. Thanks for sticking with me through this one, you guys. ❤️

Just a couple of things, before we begin:

1. If you’d like to visit my Money Flower review, you can find it here.

Flash Review: Modern Girl [Drama Special]

I don’t know what it is, but lately, it feels like I’ve had more drama specials set in the 1920s appearing on my radar, than ever before.

First, there was Let Us Meet, and then there was Kang Deoksun’s Love History, and now, we have Modern Girl.

The funny thing is, I’ve never thought of myself as being particularly drawn to stories set in this era, and yet, I’ve enjoyed all three of these stories. Maybe I’m discovering something new about myself..? 😅

Shout-out to blablah, for pointing me in the direction of this little drama special. Without her nudge, I might’ve never gotten around to checking this one out – and I did end up enjoying it nicely. Thank you~ ❤️

Announcement: Upcoming Group Watches!

Thanks to everyone who voted in the poll; 413 votes were cast by 224 voters, and Nirvana in Fire came out on top, with 94 votes, woot!

As promised, I’ve also made my Editor’s Choice group watch picks – plural, because it’s going to take two shows, not just one, to match the 18 weeks that it will take to complete our Nirvana in Fire group watch!

As you can tell from the collage, I’ve chosen My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and Kill Me, Heal Me for our Editor’s Choice group watches. As a matter of interest, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho came in second in the poll, with 83 votes, while Kill Me, Heal Me came in fourth, with 72 votes.

Flash Review: Handmade Love [Web Drama]

The thing that piqued my interest about this little web drama, is that I’d been told it’s a story about bringing healing to others. That immediately sounds potentially poignant and uplifting, and like just the sort of thing that might grab my heart.

To be fair to Show, I just wanted to let you know upfront, that everywhere I’ve looked, I’ve seen nothing but love for this little drama.

It’s just.. I didn’t manage to muster up true love for Show, despite my best efforts. However, given how well-loved Show is, I could well be the lone odd duck in the corner. So.. just because I didn’t love it, doesn’t mean that you won’t?

Open Thread: Money Flower Episodes 21 & 22

Welcome to the Open Thread, everyone! Doesn’t Pil Joo look amazing in this screenshot? I love how focused, hardworking and smart he is. And those rolled-up sleeves certainly don’t hurt. 😉🤩

A little bit of admin, and our usual ground rules, before we begin:

1. I’ve put up a poll here, so that you can vote for the show(s) that you’d like to watch next, as a community. You can vote for up to 3 shows, and you can revote, if you change your mind. Do take time to vote!

2. Please don’t post spoilers in the Open Thread, except for events that have happened in the show, up to this point. I repeat: no spoilers for future episodes please! We have quite a few first-time viewers among us, and we don’t want to spoil anything for anyone.

3. Discussions on this thread don’t have to close when newer threads open, just so you know! But as we progress through our group watch, please keep the discussions clear of spoilers from future episodes, so that future readers coming to this thread won’t be accidentally spoiled. Dear kfangurl: What are some underrated gems that need more love?

MC writes:

Another idea for a Dear Fangurl post – would you want to do a list of shows that you love but are often passed over or neglected / underrated?

Cos every year there are so many new shiny shows but there are so many good ones that pass under the radar because of low ratings or are older etc.

This could be a love note or shoutout to them.

Group Watch: Poll!

Thanks everyone, for your many suggestions, thoughts and contributions on the Group Watch brainstorm!

Lots of worthy titles were floated, and as promised, I sifted through all of them, and shortlisted the most popular titles for this poll. Thanks, too, to those of you who shared other regions where shows are available, on top of the ones I mentioned. Super helpful! 😘

Except for Beautiful Mind and Stranger, I’ve seen the other shortlisted dramas, and therefore can personally vouch for their worthiness of your drama hours. 😉
