Your reviews have become essential to my drama watching!
I wonder if you’ve seen the drama Wait, my youth? I’ve just finished watching it, and it gives a similar vibe to a love so beautiful. Would love to hear your thoughts on it!
A lot of the dramas I would not have watched if it wasn’t for you, so thank you for that 😂😄

Hey! I wanted to recommend The Bad Kids (2020). I usually have pretty low expectations for cdramas 😅 but this was honestly brilliantly written and brilliantly filmed. It reminded me of Sky Castle and Parasite – on the darker side but just an objectively good show. It’s been super popular in China apparently.

I saw the trailer! It does look good – and it also looks dark. 😛 I’ve put it on the list – thanks for the heads-up! 🙂

Hi Fangurl – The Bad kids drama is really dark and the book is even darker. Try not to read about it before you watch (if you watch) simply because I went in blind and was gobsmacked (and subsequently shaken after reading about it). Now that would be an interesting review as I would be curious to see your reaction. But, again, it is very dark. Acting was, simply put, superb! I cannot say much more as it would spoil in the event that you watch but suffice to say that you will probably know within the first 20 minutes whether or not to continue.

Yikes. Bad Kids does sound rather intimidating.. I generally don’t enjoy dark material very much. But, I will keep in mind that I’ll know within 20 minutes whether it’s for me. Thanks for the tip, phl! <3

I have good intentions of going back to it, I saw a few eps and really liked it, but stopped coz I got distracted. And also, my heart started bracing for Show to make me ugly cry, and that’s also why I hesitate to go back. But I know I’ll love it when I do, so I do plan to! 🙂

I like both those actresses and I see they split that network’s (SBS) 2018 top actress awards for their respective roles on the show. Probably not a full-watch choice, but I might skim-watch in search of good scenes. That’s worked out well for me with The K2. I really enjoy great acting, even when I don’t care about the plot as a whole.

I just found your blog and it’s friggin fantastic! You crack me up girl! I just read your post on TMOPB as well as your post on your love of “bromances” in dramas, both had me laughing spasmodically, I kid you not, I think my apartment neighbors now think I’m a bonafide lunatic from my unbridled laughter. Anyways just wanted to give you a shoutout that I truly love your writing style and sense of humor. I’m the reverse of you in my drama addiction, I’m actually way deep into C-dramas and haven’t yet watched a K-drama. Nothing against them, and in fact I’ve already been convinced that they are on the whole, much better. I actually am not yet willing to try them for precisely that reason—I am afraid I will jump ship and abandon my beloved Cdramas—which I don’t want to do because it would feel like abandoning a lover at this point and also, I’ve become so full-blown obsessed that now I am fervidly trying to learn Mandarin, so…getting into Kdramas would only distract me and make me feel I must master Korean as well. On a final note, I saw that “Someday or Oneday” is on your to watch list, definitely do it! It took a few episodes to get fully into it but then I devoured it. The plot is really fun and I found the relationships between all the main characters really heartwarming and the main lead is definitely charming with an adorable impish grin. Also, as a fan of mostly mainland Chinese dramas, this is one is so refreshingly modern, ie not full of those usual chaste-girl romance tropes where the girl must feign that she hates being kissed (I’m looking at you TMOPB and LOve 020) and even references homosexuality (gasp!). Also, I’m sure you’ve been recommended The Untamed, or perhaps already watched it, it’s only the BIGGEST hit in China of 2019, but have you?? I didn’t find it on your blog. As a professed lover of bromances, this one will TEAR your heart out! But definitely in the best way. It is hands down the best C-drama I’ve watched and not only is the bromance, actually, just plain bro-romance intoxicating but the OST, the plot, the scenery, and the cinematography are all just I don’t know, you just will want all of them to play on loop in your brain all the time. And then you will want to read the book and it won’t disappoint you either.

Hi there! I am dying to read your review and thoughts on the untamed. I can confidently say in my 12+ years of watching dramas from all different cultures…it is my absolute favorite and brings me chills just thinking about it! The chemistry is insane, the acting top notch, and the story itself is quite impressively intricate and deep. Looking forward to your thoughts!

It’s been days since I finished watching The Untamed. Listening to OST – scouring the net for reviews – and find other likeminded folk – very very unexpected love for the show. When I started watching – I told my friend – that Wei Ying (Xiao Zhang) is carrying the show on his shoulders….and then Lan Zhan (Yibo) – just took my breath away. The chemistry has come to life because of excellent expressions by both actors. I think gender is irrelevant altogether when you see the subtle display of affection. I think it’s a fantastic “slow burn” drama. I read the english version of the book – but I think the actors have done a better job (it could be that essence is not conveyed as well in English). I have been trying to watch other dramas (Startuo for eg. MEH!!!) – and I keep going back and rewatching The Untamed.

Sigh! There is no hope for me!

These are my most favorite characters in drama land till date and maybe for a long long long time to come!

Before I go on a drama hiatus I want to recommend to you ” A piece of your mind” it is slow and very beautifully written.
On the other hand I also want to tell you “A Couple’s World” is definitely what they announced…. they said it will be sexy and intruiging but it is not it is just a bunch of crazy people trying to hurt each other. It is more a psycho thriller than anything else. All characters feel like they broke out of a looney bin. It is really hard to understand why people love this show so much. But I also dislike Itaewon class (dropped it) so maybe I am the weird one :DD

I’m curious about A Couple’s World, if just to see just how crazy things get. Maybe it’ll be fun to watch in a So Crazy It’s Good way..? 😅 I do love Kim Hee Ae, so I’m hoping to find a way to enjoy it. 😅

Greetings Fangirl from Southern California where we are still on lock-down which gives those of us who love Kdrama’s time to view the long list placed in the to-view-list. Based on your review I finished “Crown Prince” and although it is from 2007 and probably a bit outdated for the actors, I loved it and kept watching episode after episode rapidly to finish in a couple of evenings. Recently I watched “Goblin” with Goog Yoo and in comparison, preferred his role in “Crown Prince”. I have read how popular “Goblin” was but I just didn’t get the feel for the Kdrama. One of male characters in “Crown Prince” was Kim Jae Wook from “Her Private Life”, I was impressed with his growth in acting skills and how good he was in his love scenes with the female lead in “Her Private Life”. His has a very strong jaw line and very angular facial lines which adds a bit a mystery to his looks. Stay safe in your home country, all of us will be so happy to be able to have our freedom once more. I was pleased to read that South Korea is doing so well, better than some countries with less Covid-19 cases reported. I’m wondering what affect it has been on the Kdrama world productions? And, like you, I couldn’t get into Goblin either. 😅 And yes, Kim Jae Wook did a lovely job in Her Private Life! Good Morning Fangirl, You are always so responsive in your replies and I do appreciate your reviews. In fact on your recommendation, I am now watching, “My Mister”. I must admit I’m having a hard time w/ the female lead & her motives but since I’m just into the Kdrama, hopefully I will warm up to her as the episodes go further. I remember the male lead from “Coffee Prince” & I am enjoying his acting.

Good Morning Fangurl from Southern California, USA.
Last evening I finished “My Mister” & a huge thank you for your recommendation on this Kdrama. I’m so glad to have finally come to a realization on Ji An’s character & her unhappy early life. The scene of her saying goodbye to her grandmother in episode 15 was heartbreaking, I wanted Lee Sun Gyun to comfort her but he held back possibly due to his own emotions? And the scene in his apartment, those emotions of being alone, crying & missing Ji An? (Just my interpretation). Plus the ending when they both looked so happy to meet again said a lot, she obviously was in love w/ him & I like to think he was w/ her. So yes, maybe at a next meeting of the two, feelings will blossom?
Carol Shibuya
P.S, The melody played during Ji An’s scenes is beautiful, I often replay the “My Mister” soundtrack.

Hi Carol, I’m glad you enjoyed My Mister! 😀 Yes, the music in the show is lovely, and every time I listen to it, it brings me right back. <3 As for the romance aspect, Show leaves it vague, so we as viewers can choose our interpretation. I personally prefer to think of them as platonic soulmates, but it's cool too, that you think of them as potential lovers. Neither of us is wrong. 🙂

I love this blog so muchhhhh – recommended to all my friends when I get them hooked on kdramas – usually by showing them the first ep of Strong Woman Do Bong Soon and as soon as Park Hyung Sik comes onto the screen I know I’ve succeeded in my mission hehe ;)) I’ve been on this blog for a few years now and just wanted to let you know that I think you will really really love I’ll find when the weather is nice – given our current situation at the moment it’s healing nature is a welcome and much needed presence in dramaland and our watching experiences. I think you’ll really appreciate the understated love and healthy relationship (which is just progressing into a two sided one) dynamics that are shown. That along with the beautiful setting and friendly neighbourhood vibes reminded me so much of Reply 1988 which I know you loved. Can’t wait for your review on this! Hope your safe and taking care of yourself in the midst of this global pandemic. Fighting!

Heloo, how are you? hope you and your dearest keep healthy <3
I just want to share and recomend a Japanese Dorama Koi Wa Tsuzuku Yo Dokomademo.
Takeru Satoh is the lead Actor, actually it's been so long since my last dorama (i regularly watched dorama in Takuya Kimura, takashi sorimachi era. so long ago) but since these past years its easier to access kdrama, so i alwatch kdrama.
last week i accidentaly saw post about this Koi Tsudu drama and saw Takeru Satoh looks so cool in it, so i watched in and i loooooooooooovvvvvvvveeeeee it.
It's a drama that so cliche, so simple and so sweet, it's background is medical but after get used to kdrama conflict in hospital (hospital politic, cool, difficult and realistic operation scene) this drama is so simple, but feels so sincere.
i'm gonna say it that don't hope theres a super cool story or twist in this drama, its so simple and easy, and even the scenes between otp is cliche and full of drama tropes (i read your article bout this :p )
for me it just a perfect drama in this situation, it sure help me through this stay at home moment 🙂
So if you need some refreshment and easy, sweet, cute romance with super cool male actor i suggest you try to watch this, it's only 10 ep.
Hope you will try it <3

Hi there putri! Great to see you! <3 Once again, I'm planning to check out a show that I was actually thinking of skipping, ha. First, When The Devil Calls Your Name, and now Koi Wa Tsuzuku Yo Dokomademo. I did have someone suggest it to me, but after looking at the synopsis, I decided that it was too much like Mischievous Kiss, and I feel like I'm over that franchise by now. But.. your enthusiastic remarks have made me think again. Plus, I did love A Love So Beautiful, which is also quite similar to Mischievous Kiss. So, I've changed plans, and I think I will be checking out Koi Wa Tsuzuku Yo Dokomademo soonish. I hope I'll like it as much as you did! 😘

Hai hai, i’m so happy if you want to consider to watch Koi Tsudu, i hope you like it. this drama is so easy, cliche and sweet they dont even have the bad guy, everyone is cute and supportive. i watched it when i start stay at home in this pandemic, and with all the scary news i think sweet and cute drama like this help me through the stressed.

Reply to  Ivy

Hi there Ivy, thanks for stopping by! 🙂 To answer your questions,
Goblin: I got up to about E10, but have paused on it indefinitely because I found myself struggling to connect with the characters and story. I liked bits of it, but struggled to like it as a whole. I haven’t officially dropped it because I might give it another try sometime. I hear with the right mood, it is lovely.
Legend of the Blue Sea: I got about 8 eps in, and realized I wasn’t enjoying the show much. I liked the early episodes quite well, but I generally wasn’t feeling it much, once I got past the initial fish (or mermaid) out of water hijinks. I don’t have plans to go back to this one.
While You Were Sleeping: I was in a bit of a drama rut when I tried this one, and dropped out early, because it reminded me too much of I Hear Your Voice, which was by the same writer, and felt like a rehash of similar story and themes. I’m also not a big fan of Suzy’s acting, so even though I enjoy Lee Jong Suk, I dropped this one. I might go back to this one sometime, but it’s not a priority for me.

Maybe not quite what you were hoping for, since I didn’t finish any of the shows you asked about, but I hope that helps! 🙂

I haven’t seen a review of Cleaning with passion for now.
I would really recommend that Drama to you – it is a bit cheesy at times but I love it even as a guy 🙂

Ah. I tried 4 eps of Cleaning with Passion and while I did find it rather cute, I also could not jive with Show’s sense of humor, unfortunately. Too much toilet and vomit humor for my taste. 😝 Glad the show worked for you tho! 😉

Much appreciate your takes on all these shows. I normally do not comment on public forums but your site is so helpful that I felt compelled to drop a thank you note. Your well-articulated comments, nice photos, spoiler alert warnings and final ratings all come together nicely in a useful manner for k-drama lovers like myself. Bravo kfangurl!

Good Morning Fangirl, I have a sensitive question to put out here. I am a huge fan of K-dramas here in the USA & although I don’t understand Korean, it doesn’t hamper my love for these dramas. And best of all there are a number of storylines to suit anyones taste, young or old. The stories are always done in respect for traditions in Korea but has there ever been a storyline of a mixed race coupling? Possibly this would be frowned on in Korea? I don’t mean to offfend anyone, I was just curious. (My late husband was Japanese.)
Thank you, Carol

Hi Carol, that’s an interesting question. You’re right to say that in Korea, traditionally, mixed race marriages are faced with some degree of prejudice. However, things are slowly evolving, I believe. For some insight into a real-life mixed race couple in Korea, you might want to check out My Korean Husband. In terms of dramas, I realize that off the top of my head, I couldn’t really think of dramas which featured mixed race couples, BUT, I did manage to find this little video which lists a number of mixed race pairings on dramas. As far as I can tell, these were not the main couple in the dramas, but supporting characters or supporting arcs. I think that does reflect quite accurately where we are right now, in terms of this issue, ie, there is a degree of openness to it, but not to the extent that a kdrama would feature a mixed race couple as its lead couple. I hope that helps 🙂

Thank you Kfangurl for taking the time to answer my question, I was curious how a mixed couple relationship might be handled in a K-drama. Probably a sensitive subject in Korea or even Japan when traditions are a priority. Here is the USA there are so many mixed couple relationships when during WWII and after the war, it was illegal in some states for a Japanese and a Caucasian to marry. We have come a long way since those days but I can understand that this kind of a relationship may be frowned upon in other countries. It would make for an interesting K-drama I think? And I will definitely check out those suggestions you mentioned.
Thank you, Carol Shibuya

You’re very welcome, Carol, I hope the links help to add clarity! 🙂 Indeed, it would be interesting to see a mixed race couple as the main loveline in a kdrama. Maybe one day? 😉

Edit: PS, I came across this interview today, of the couple from My Korean Husband, about what it’s like to be an interracial couple in Korea, and thought you’d find it interesting. Here you go:

Hi there MeriJ! I’m absolutely working on the review – but this one might take a little longer than my usual, coz I’m doing at least a partial if not full rewatch, to test a theory. I hope to post the review by the end of the week, so stay tuned for that! 😀

We loved it for 3/4s of the show, started hating the lazy TV show-quality writing toward the end, but were ultimately satisfied with the various resolutions. We certainly loved all the characters as written and as brought to life by the actors.

If there were one thing I would change about the tropes in these rom dramas, it would be the incredibly annoying tendency to introduce protagonist stupidity at the 11th hour, just to maintain tension. It feels so manipulative.

For example, having a protagonist sob hysterically for five minutes while the person they care about is bleeding out, instead of first calling an ambulance and compressing the wound. IRL, you go into desperate action mode first, then sob when there’s nothing left you can do and are faced with how utterly helpless you are in the hands of fate.

Or continually underestimating ruthless opponents. Etc.

We don’t watch TV generally and have only been watching the better Korean dramas, So I guess when they revert to mere-TV-quality-writing , we’re not as forgiving as a regular TV watcher might be…

Thanks for sharing your experience of the show, MeriJ! 😀 That does mirror my own experience quite well, but I did have large gaps between episodes because I watched this as it was airing, and then even fell behind due to real life busyness, which made me wonder whether my dissatisfaction with the show had to do with my loss of momentum in watching the show, or was purely due to the Show’s shortcomings themselves. That’s what prompted me to do the rewatch, just to see if I would feel differently, if I was binge-watching the show instead. Your comments about the writing weaknesses does affirm my own observations.. I, too, found it hard to believe that a highly trained Special Forces officer wouldn’t spring into emergency mode and at least compress the wound, and would instead just cry about it. 🤯😆

Still, I found the drama enjoyable overall, despite all the logic stretches. I’m more picky than the average viewer, but I do see the value in suspending disbelief, if Show is bringing lots of other goodies to the table, and often try to adjust my viewing lens accordingly. Hopefully the other dramas I suggested to you will give you greater overall satisfaction! 😉

Ah, don’t get me wrong. We loved CLOY. There are so many aspects of it that are wonderful, but the characters above all. Both sides of the primary OTP in particular, but everyone else as well. It’s also the first one we’ve seen that was more like a Latin American Nelenovela, with a mix of romance, humor, hilariously over-the-top campiness, James Bond action etc. We loved it.

As for the ending — I hope this will not too spoilerish for others reading your watch list — I am starting to pay close attention to how these dramas wrap up. The rhythmic timing, in particular. I mentioned that the incredibly satisfying OTP climax of Chocolate occurs in the penultimate episode, with the finale seeming more like denouement. CLOY was a bit the same, I thought, in terms of how they paced the 111 minute finale itself. I thought it worked quite well, especially since they’d already established that pattern with those after-action scenes at the end of each episode.

Our millennial child just finished Chocolate, btw. Talking with them about it last night, I realized you probably think it’s a medical drama. At first it seems like it will be, but the action soon shifts to the hospice facility and the emphasis shifts accordingly. It’s a very humanity-focused show. And while I do prefer stronger female leads, in this case it works because she’s been seriously damaged since early childhood.

Indeed, Crash Landing did manage to be a pretty cracky package, pulling together a lot of entertaining elements together really well. The writer also wrote You From Another Star (aka My Love From Another Star / My Love From The Stars). It’s the other one of her projects that I feel manages a similar effect, and both feel like distinct stories, even though many of the same devices are used, down to the epilogues. If you and your wife loved CLOY and would like another similar-yet-different sort of show to sample, I do think you have a good chance of enjoying You From Another Star 🙂

Thanks for the insight on Chocolate.. I do like humanity focused shows a lot more than medical shows, so I’m slightly more inclined to give it another look, when I’m in the right mood. 🙂

Thank you Kfangirl, I will be anxious to read your review for CLOY when it becomes available. This paticular Kdrama has a lot of followers on FB & many of the viewers are trying to find another Kdrama that will fill their void. I did recommend your website for great suggestions on more Kdramas. I’m presently watching Dr. Romantic 1 & 2 & find the medical stories very factual coming from a one time OR nurse. I do recall reading that you really don’t care for medical Kdramas and I must admit, this Kdrama is not for the squeamish.

Aw, thanks for pointing other dramas in this direction! I feel the love! 🥰🥰 Also, thanks for the heads-up on the Dr. Romantic dramas! Your review on ‘The Crowned Clown’ brought me here and man did I love that piece of writing! It was delight to read for me as that drama has a very special place in my heart. I loved how deep you dived into it. Which is why I would honestly feel eternally grateful to you if you could find the time to watch Hotel Del Luna and give us a review. Take alllll the time you need. I would just love ro read how you felt about it as I am having a real hard time moving on from it. I dont know whether it has been suggested already but do watch the first few minutes of the first episode. (I wanna say I promise you won’t regret it but also wanna stay safe but a long verdict on that would be a delight to read!)

Hi there Merry! Thanks for the kind words – I’m so glad you enjoyed my review of The Crowned Clown. That is such a solid show, through and through. <3 As for Hotel Del Luna, I've got it on my list to check out, but haven't managed to get around to it as yet. I hope to at least check it out before the year ends, but the clock is ticking and my drama plate is overflowing, so I've got my work cut out for me! 😬😅

Helooo, i just finished When The Devil Calls Your Name and i really like it. Actually i’m not sure if you’ll like this fantasy genre but it’s Jung Kyung Ho and Park Sung Woong. Dont we love their chemistry on Life on Mars? and their bromance in this drama is also very good. and the best thing from this drama is their songs. because this drama is about music industry, so there are many song involved and allllll of those songs are so good. it’s been 5 days in a row i keep looping all of their ost.and of course Jung Kyung Ho’s acting is superb. old version, young versio, when he’s sad, when he’s being greedy, his regret. his acting is so good. so so good.
i really hope you’ll check this drama.

Hi there putri, thanks for the recommendation! 🙂 I did have The Devil Calls Your Name on my list, but time slipped away from me and I got distracted by newer shows. I heard that the plot was a little all over the place; did you feel similar? I do have a big soft spot for both Jung Kyung Ho and Park Sung Woong, so I hope to give the show a try. 🙂

The plot was a little all over the place indeed, got a a little boring at ep 2 – 6 but please bear with it, you will not regret because after ep 6 i just cant stop watching. and again Jung Kyung Ho is very good on this drama (well, he’s good on all of his drama) but here he became a greedy person and how he deliver it, his guilt.. huhu i dont know how to express it. just please watch it.

Check out Watcher! It has Seo Kang Joon (played Baek In Ho in Cheese in the Trap and Nam Shin in Are You Human) 🙂 It’s a really interesting mystery/thriller/action genre, but no romance (might not be your cup of tea because I’ve seen how you usually go for the lighthearted rom-coms and know the ins and outs of what makes a good relationship on screen). I feel that the drama builds a good backstory for the main characters and has so many plot twists that I’m always sitting on the edge of my seat! Hope you can give it a try 😉

Hi there, thanks for the suggestion. I will keep it in mind. I do tend to be quicker to check out lighter shows, but some of my favorites have been serious melodramas, some featuring little to no romance, so I wouldn’t say that I’m only about the romance. 😉
